Following our feature on Duncan Reid & The Big Heads final bittersweet show at The Lexington, we invite Duncan into the Retrosonic Podcast virtual studio to get the lowdown on the shock decision to hang up his purple Duncanbacker bass for the very last time. The announcement came just as he released his fifth and arguably best album to date "And It's Goodbye From Him..." calling time on a musical career that started off in 1976 with spells in The Matinee Idols and The Hollywood Killers before a move to London at the very start of the U.K. Punk explosion in 1977 to join the melodic Punk Pop legends The Boys. In this episode, Duncan picks five songs from the new LP that cover the reasons behind his decision and we take a look back at each of the rest of his albums with The Big Heads, discussing some of his favourite hidden gems and overlooked tracks along the way. He also praises his Big Heads bandmates who contributed to making them one of the most visually exciting live acts of recent years. Having spent the latter part of his 10 years at Clarion Events as EVP of its energy portfolio, Duncan Reid founded Reset Connect, a sustainability show for business, investors and innovators, during lockdown. With so many people knocked out of their employment stride by the pandemic, Reid was able to put together a top team of co-founders and launch, in the shape of a week of webinars against the clock in 2021. Since then, Reset Connect has found its in-person feet and this episode, recorded two weeks out from the 2023 edition, sees Duncan talk host James Dickson through those stages. They discuss the COVID-19-era ‘concentration of minds', and its products, choosing the UK's first carbon neutral venue to host the show - one element in the pressure to contain the inevitable uplift in emissions switching from virtual to hybrid in 2022, and the growth in want for sustainability across events-world and beyond. Aimed at business leaders, Reset Connect has a multi-sector reach. To keep up to date with all the news, subscribe for free here. This week's episode dives into the murky waters of who is the best overall player in the MLB right now. Betts or Trout? Los Hermanos break it down why, in their opinion, one player is better than the other. They even have a stats breakdown behind some of our reasoning. Kevin takes us into the ballpark with this week's installment of "Kevin's Call to the Bullpen." Brian then leads the Hermanos into the realm of hypotheticals of who takes over the Super Utility role with the Dodgers and who takes over Second base. There are some heated discussions about the potential opening day line up and much, much more!If you want to reach out to us with suggestions about topics we can discuss or even topic you want to learn about in Kevin's Call to the Bullpen, feel free to leave us a message in iTunes or shoot us an email at TalkingLosDoyers@gmail.comCredits and Sources:Intro/Outro music remix: Duncan Reid and the Big Heads - Montevideo/Scott Holmes Music - Hotshot

In Episode 5 of our special Retrosonic Podcast "Lockdown Lowdown" series we welcome Duncan Reid, formerly the bassist with original melodic Punk Pop legends The Boys and currently performing and recording with his own band The Big Heads. In this thoroughly enjoyable romp through Duncan's life we go right back to his earliest childhood musical memories to discover his first exposure to Rock & Roll, the first record he bought with his own pocket money and the first gig he went to. There are examples of his favourite singles and albums along with the artists and gigs that have had an impact and influence on him over the years. More importantly, we also learn why he was awarded the freedom of a South American capital city, what influential item he found in his Dad's cupboard and how he became big in Japan without even knowing it! All this and much, much more! Generously soundtracked by Duncan's own pick of the pops throughout the episode including Marc Bolan & T-Rex, Ramones, Chris Isaak, Alice Cooper, Beatles, The Who, Rolling Stones, Heavy Metal Kids, Queen, The Jam, Johnny Thunders and Mr. Bloe. There is of course, some of the very best examples of his own recorded work from his time with The Boys and Hollywood Killers to his debut solo album and bang up to date with The Big Heads excellent new LP "Don't Blame Yourself". Enjoy! Retrosonic Podcast has a valid PRS certificate. Podcover photo by Peter Andersen courtesy of Duncan Reid. Check out the feature on Retro Man Blog below for full track-listing, links and a great video of a track from the new Big Heads LP. https://retroman65.blogspot.com/2020/07/retrosonic-podcast-lockdown-lowdown_26.html
Our second guest for the TGOW Podcast Series is Dana Mathewson. I had the honor of meeting Dana in June of 2014 while I was playing tennis at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in NYC. We’ve stayed in touch ever since via social media. I’ve been fan-girling Dana since that first tennis match I saw her playing in NYC. It’s been so much fun watching Dana grow not only academically, but also athletically. Dana went to Rio de Janeiro for the Paralympics in the summer of 2016. She recently also finished competing in the US Open in NYC. Dana is currently pursuing a master’s in audiology at the University College London. Traipsin’ Global on Wheels is focused on sharing resources and insights into disability advocacy, fitness and health, and accessible travel. Our mission is to build a community of healthy, worldly, and informed advocates. end credit music: 'Rolling On' by Duncan Reid and the Big Heads (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0)

S. Duncan Reid has written a meticulously researched and detailed account of the performances and recording career of Bay Area-raised and small group Latin-jazz innovator and vibraphonist Cal Tjader. Tjader’s high-energy yet lyrical and melodic playing introduced new demographics of jazz listeners to the soulful sound of Latin jazz for four decades beginning in the 1940s and ending with Tjader’s untimely death at the age of 56 in 1982. In Cal Tjader: The Life and Recordings of the Man Who Revolutionized Latin Jazz (McFarland, 2013), Reid details Tjader’s uncanny ability to soak up ever-evolving stylistic and percussive nuances – and discusses his collaborations with and influences on other Latin jazz innovators such as Mongo Santamaria, Willie Bobo, Poncho Sanchez, Vince Guaraldi, Michael Wolff and many, many more. Reid recounts how Mario Bauza, Machito, Tito Puente, Dizzy Gillespie, and Stan Kenton, among others, had influenced the Latin jazz scene in the 1940s with their exciting big band/orchestral sound – and that the majority of influential jazz critics were “East of the Mississippi.” One of the delights in Reid’s book is to see how Tjader, with his San Francisco Bay Area roots and a European family background, nonetheless was attracted to and became an innovator in the small-group Latin jazz scene. Cal Tjader was literally born to rhythm. His father, of Swedish descent, was a talented vaudevillian. His Idaho-born mother played classical piano. Tjader’s parents opened a popular dance studio in San Mateo, California in the late 1920s. Tjader was already tap dancing in front of audiences by the age of 4 and as a child even danced with tap dance legend Bill “Bojangles” Robinson on a Hollywood set in the early 1930s. Forsaking tap dancing in high school, Tjader picked up drums and within three years won a Gene Krupa drum contest playing “Drum Boogie.” News of his success, however, was “overshadowed” by another news event –the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. After serving in the South Pacific in WWII, Tjader returned to the San Francisco Bay area, attended San Francisco State College and soon began collaborating with other West Coast jazz musicians – most notably Dave Brubeck (Tjader started out as a drummer for Brubeck in the late 1940s and subsequently the vibes), and sax player Paul Desmond. It wasn’t long, however, before Tjader became enamored of the infectious and complex percussive permutations in Afro-Cuban rhythms after meeting Cuban percussionist Armando Peraza in San Francisco early in 1950. Reid also writes that Tjader’s collaborations/recordings with classically trained jazz pianist George Shearing were central to Tjader’s own evolution in the small-group Latin sound. Shearing called Tjader a “percussive genius.” Tjader always had a lyrical quality to his playing – he left space and was always looking for new compositional challenges, and it wasn’t long before Tjader became a fixture in the small-group Latin jazz scene in San Francisco, playing gigs at the most famous San Francisco clubs of the day – notably The Blackhawk, The Great American Music Hall, and the El Matador. Tjader is probably most associated with his catchy cover of the Gillespie/Pozo hit Guarachi Guaro on his Grammy-nominated album Soul Sauce in 1964. Tjader later won a Grammy for his album La Onda Va Bien, recorded in 1979. Reid is upfront about Tjader’s problems with alcohol and challenging family dynamics but doesn’t psychologize – he lets his interviewees do the talking. Learn more about your ad choices.
