For the third, and final, episode where The Ledge attempts to fix the godawful errors of The Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame we handle the overlooked bands of the 90’s. Along with the usual punk and indie rock bands of that time, there’s also a couple of sets devoted to the Americana sub-genre that rose in popularity during that time. Again, just think of how much fun a ceremony would be that included the likes of the Supersuckers, Steve Earle, Rocket From the Crypt, Fugazi, Superchunk, and so many other greats. Maybe an Uncle Tupelo reunion could be negotiated after an all star jam under the Golden Smog name. Billy Childish could possibly jam with Reverend Horton Heat and Archers of Loaf! Oh that would be a show I wouldn’t miss! I also start the show with a lengthy discussion about my friend Monica Kindt, who tragically passed away earlier this week. She was my manager at two different record stores over the years, and was a person who endured many of my childish rants over the years. My thoughts go to her family and all of us friends who miss her so much. She would have loved my […]

Using what you've got This follows from my chat with Chris Penfold about making good and mending. This one is about using what you've got. We can talk about this from a material point of view, where you're using equipment that you already have, but it's also about your skills, and you have many of these placed within other areas of activity; bringing these on board will benefit you. I spoke about something that Michael Breen said during an NLP training. The story was that his wife was very good at interior design; she could change colours and items in a room in her head, but it made her a nightmare to take out for dinner because she would do the same thing with the items on the menu. She would make endless comparisons between different dishes in different courses. So look at all the skills that you have as a musician. You may also be a good people person, being a good communicator. That may be evident within your music, but it might not be. If you're not a very good people person and you're trying to be a teacher, then that would be a problem. However, if you're not good at that but may be good at organising or something else, you could bring those skills to the front to help with project management. As he was in the army, Chris was talking about the British Army having to be inventive because they didn't always have the equipment to fix the problem. They have to think it through and work out how they could accomplish the task with the gear that they have. So, for instance, if you have a guitar, a music stand and a computer, you could set yourself up as a teacher. If you've got a car, you can travel to people. You don't need to go and buy a more expensive guitar or equipment to accomplish that. Now that on the face of it is obvious, you'll be surprised because I have coached people who would become teachers who had the idea that they needed new equipment so they could set this up. It's unnecessary, but you could also look at that from the point of view of what you require to be a performer. You only need what you have. I interviewed Billy Childish, the artist and punk musician. Billy comes out of this aspect of using primitivism in what he does, particularly musically, so the idea of limitations is good. He has a couple of old amps, one which dates back to the 60s, possibly even earlier than that and a couple of old battered-up guitars, nothing new, and he has managed to produce well over 150 albums. It all comes from the perspective of keeping it simple, even the recording techniques. This idea of garage recording is playing in an ample space with the band and then just going into a studio and putting the vocals over the top. He has done this for years, and it enabled him to produce a lot of albums with that very raw sound, and it influenced many bands, including the White Stripes. So another aspect of working with what you've got also involves people; obviously, this presents a sharp focus on how good your networking is. You probably know The people you need to form a band or the people who know them you already know. I think it's always problematic when you audition people because you don't know their personalities particularly well; the chemistry between various members makes a band, so working with the people you already know will lead to a better lineup. I would also say this is true of running a team for business. If you're starting something new, you can headhunt the people you know; that's a good way forward. The excellent book by Tony Buzan is called Genius, and it's all about such genius and Mastermind groups. This book sites that many geniuses didn't do the stuff on their own they had help from very influential people, and that enabled them to develop not the way that history is taught; we always go for the grand man narrative, and to some extent, there is an element of that you know the great person that focuses attention. Still, they can't do this independently, and there's often more than one great mind that goes into creating and achieving. You need to be able to work with others and be flexible with that, and again, if these people already know, then you're more likely to do that because I'll be friends of yours To support the podcast and get access to features about guitar playing and song writing visit https://www.patreon.com/vichyland and also news for all the creative music that we do at Bluescamp UK and France visit www.bluescampuk.co.uk For details of the Ikaro music charity visit www.ikaromusic.com Big thanks to Josh Ferrara for the music

As this is the last show of the first quarter of 2023, and even airing on the last day of the month, it’s only natural that we take a look back at some of the stunning new records released so far thsi year. It has been quite a year, especialy if you are a fan of guitar-driven music. Power pop, in particular, has made a great comeback this year, highlighted by the likes of The Whiffs, Local Drags, and Ryan Allen And His Extra Arms. But it’s also a great year for returning legends. Yo La Tengo, The Long Ryders, The Church, and Iggy Pop released their best albums in years. Billy Childish reunited the legendary Thee Headcoats for their first album in 22 years, and it’s a smoker! For this show, obviously, the main highlight comes from the “52 Weeks of Teenage Kicks” subtheme, and we received thrilling news earlier this week. The very first person I contacted when I came up with this idea was Malibu Lou from Rum Bar Records. Obviously, I was hoping that he could convince some of his bands to participate (and I still hope they do). What I wasn’t expecting was for Lou […]

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Billy Childish (@billychildish_for_it_is_he)Billy Childish is an English painter, author, poet, photographer, film maker, singer and guitarist. Since the late 1970s, Childish has been prolific in creating music, writing and visual art. He has led and played in bands including the Pop Rivets, Thee Milkshakes, Thee Headcoats, and the Musicians of the British Empire, primarily working in the genres of garage rock, punk and surf and releasing more than 100 albums. He is a consistent advocate for amateurism and free emotional expression. Childish co-founded the Stuckism art movement with Charles Thomson in 1999, which he left in 2001. Since then a new evaluation of Childish's standing in the art world has been under way, culminating with the publication of a critical study of Childish's working practice by the artist and writer Neal Brown, with an introduction by Peter Doig, which describes Childish as "one of the most outstanding, and often misunderstood, figures on the British art scene". He is a visiting lecturer at Rochester Independent College. In July 2014 Childish was awarded an honorary Doctor of Arts Degree from the University of Kent. He is known for his explicit and prolific work - he has detailed his love life and childhood sexual abuse, notably in his early poetry and the novels My Fault (1996), Notebooks of a Naked Youth (1997), Sex Crimes of the Futcher (2004) - The Idiocy of Idears (2007), and in several of his songs, notably in the instrumental "Paedophile" (1992) (featuring a photograph of the man who sexually abused him on the front cover) and "Every Bit of Me" (1993). From 1981 until 1985 Childish had a relationship with artist Tracey EminFor more information on the work of Billy Childish go tohttps://l-13.org/product-category/by-artist/billy-childish/To Support this podcast from as little as £3 per month: www.patreon/ministryofartsFor full line up of confirmed artists go to https://www.ministryofarts.orgEmail: ministryofartsorg@gmail.comSocial Media: @ministryofartsorg Hosted on Acast.
Escuchar audio
In the thick of lockdown in March 2021, we spoke to the Greatest Living Englishman, Billy Childish, down the landline phone from his living room in Chatham, Kent. Billy is a punk and blues musician, painter, poet and much else, and has been named as an influence by Kurt Cobain, Kylie Minogue, Jack White and many others. We talked about Billy's then-latest project, an album of Bob Dylan covers, the role of confession in art and culture today, and Billy played a beautiful impromptu version of Dylan's 'Simple Twist of Fate' over the phone. To mark the publication of the second volume of Billy's Dylan project this month, we present a new podcast edit of our interview. Support us at Patreon.com/ThePopularPod and help us grow. This week’s show was originally going to be another in the series of “odds and ends” episodes where I air tracks from some record I’ve either recently acquired or pulled out of the archives to give a listen. Unfortunately, the deaths of two great rockers changed those plans. Mark Lanegan is in my opinion the most artistic of all of the grunge-era lead vocalists. While the vast majority of his brethren rarely travelled out of their safe zone, Lanegan was a musical shape shifter throughout his entire career. There was simply not a genre he wouldn’t attempt, nor did it seem like he ever said no to a collaborator. The first half of the show consists of long sets devoted to his solo career and also a taste of those collaborations. Then just a couple of hours before showtime came the news that Downliners Scet leader Don Craine had also passed away. Never heard of the Sect? You’re loss. Please go do some research after listening to tonight’s show. The set dedicated to him not only includes some of the great tracks of their mid-60s glory years but also a couple of great collaborations with Billy Childish. Filling up the […]

Putting together a Dylan tribute show for this week was clearly a no-brainer. After all, he turned 80 years old this past Monday! Of course The Ledge would celebrate! It actually wasn’t until the day of his birthday that I decided on this theme, though, and I have to give special thanks to Lydia Loveless. To help raise money for NIVA (National Independent Venue Association), Lydia and a dozen other artists were a part of Happy Birthday Uncle Bob! A Dylan Tribute. That release is just one of many recent releases that are the focus of the first half of the show. Daniel Romano, Billy Childish (as The William Loveday Intention), Lucinda Williams, and others have full-length albums of Dylan remakes, and the second half of the show consists of some old favorites such as Paul Westerberg, Jason & The Scorchers, Mike Ness, and many others. After listening, please go purchase those tracks you enjoy! These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs. And if you buy these records directly from the artist or label, please let them know you heard these […]
For episode 17 of our Lockdown Lowdown series we welcome Saskia Holling to discuss her new book "Girlsville: The Story of The Delmonas & Thee Headcoatees" which is out now on Spinout Publications. Saskia talks about the process of writing the book itself along with the history and legacy of both groups and each of the band members. We also find out more about Saskia, her own music with Sally Skull, Lord Rochester and Big Russ Wilkins & Lightnin' Hollings and her fanzine "Heavy Flow" along with encounters with Kim Fowley and the impact of seeing Poison Ivy of The Cramps. We then discuss the prejudices and barriers faced by women in music and the positive effect of the Riot Grrrl movement. The episode is sound-tracked by Saskia's personal selection of her favourite Delmonas and Headcoatees songs, a pick of her own music and some of her influences and most memorable musical moments. Here's a description of the book from Spinout Publications. "Following the arrival of Post-Punk in the UK, an explosion of musical wonders flourished in the South East of England. Two such wonders, The Delmonas and Thee Headcoatees added to the burgeoning flow of music from the Medway Delta; a current started by The Pop Rivets, The Milkshakes and The Prisoners. Fronted by women from the Medway area and beyond, The Delmonas and Thee Headcoatees are regularly labelled as ‘Billy Childish projects’, yet the women involved added their own stamp to the musical beat. Hear ye for The Queens of The Medway Delta! Here, we find out more about these women – Hilary, Louise, Sarah, Debbie, Kyra and Holly and just how their paths intertwined to create memorable records (without musical industry intervention) and just what has happened to them all since…Collated and related by Saskia Holling, herself a music maker (The Nettelles, Lord Rochester, Sally Skull, Big Russ Wilkins & Lightnin’ Holling) and fanzine writer, who is seeking to help keep women in musical history. Published under the Spinout Publications imprint, with front cover painting by Sarah Crouch (Miss Ludella Black), and packed with photos and contributions from key figures within the Medway Delta, and related, and beyond!" With music from The Delmonas, Thee Headcoatees, Miss Ludella Black, Holly Golightly & The Brokeoffs, The A-Lines, Ye Nuns, Lord Rochester, Big Russ Wilkins & Lightnin' Holling, The Nettelles, Sally Skull, Babes In Toyland, The Raincoats, The Go-Go's and more. For full tracklisting and links to the featured bands and where you can buy a copy of "Girlsville" please check out Retro Man Blog at the link below: https://retroman65.blogspot.com/2021/05/retrosonic-podcast-with-saskia-holling.html
For Episode 9 of our special Lockdown Lowdown series we welcome Ian Greensmith into the virtual Retrosonic Podcast studio. Ian, a.k.a. Vic Templar, Herbie Greensmith, Vic Flange or just Ian Smith is not only a man of many names he's also a man of many talents as drummer with Medway Indie legends The Dentists, Armitage Shanks, Ye Ascoyne D'Ascoynes, The Dirty Contacts, Sine Waves, Rubberman 12 and The Nuevo Ramon 5. He's also a DJ, one of the promoters of The Fratcave club night and Beatwave Weekenders, author of the hilarious semi-autobiographical "Taking Candy From a Dog", keen gardener, badger watcher and retired cricketer. So yes, you can guess that this episode is packed full of many fascinating musical memories, inspirations, tales and adventures and, of course, some bloody great music! Ian takes us on a musical journey from his very first memory of hearing Aretha Franklin in the canteen at Butlins in Bognor Regis to the first record he bought with his own pocket money, his first gig and first time behind the drumkit. We learn about the early shows with The Milkshakes and The Prisoners, discovering the MIC Club and some legendary Medway Delta names such as Billy Childish, Graham Day, Russ Wilkins, Sexton Ming and more. There's the stories behind his own bands including The Dentists, Ye Ascoyne D'Ascoynes, Armitage Shanks and Nuevo Ramon 5 along with a pick of the best of their music. Then there's a stash of great tunes from his DJ bag, the gig he would travel back in time for, his perfect LP and 45rpm single and some of his favourite bands that he has put on at his own Club nights and Weekenders. There are brushes (excuse the pun) with Buddy Rich, Mark E Smith, The Monochrome Set and Johnny Echols and the story behind his superb semi-autobiographical book "Taking Candy From A Dog". Includes music from The Dentists, Armitage Shanks, Ye Ascoyne D'Ascoynes, The Milkshakes, The Prisoners, Aretha Franklin, Elvis Costello & The Attractions, Sammy Davis Jr & Buddy Rich, The Fall, The Byrds, Love, Buzzcocks, The Kingsmen, Gary McFarland, The Monochrome Set, The Wildebeests, The Fallen Leaves, Ye Nuns, Ramon 5, Little Richard and The Allisons. A Garage Punk show about Love, Guitars and Leather Jackets. The story of Garage Punk couple The Courettes is a great Rock ‘n Roll Love Story, which the band told us when we met them at Café du Port at Hamburg St. Pauli the day after they played a double show at local Monkeys Music Club. It was one of the last shows before the second Corona shutdown in Germany. The Courettes met in brazil when touring together with their former bands Columbian Neckties and Autoramas. Today Martin and Flavia Couri live in Denmark and have a four year old son. We talked with them about their soon coming third album, about the bands style (musically and optical) and the special gear they are using to achieve their one of a kind sound. Lately they got signed by the legendary British label Damaged Goods Records which is not the only thing they share with Garage legend Billy Childish. You find The Courettes Music and Merch on their website: https://www.thecourettes.com/ … and their Bandcamp page: https://thecourettes.bandcamp.com/merch Find more interviews with great underground bands on our website: http://www.radiobrennt.de/

I know I say this every year, but Halloween is the most rock and roll of all holidays. Thus it only makes sense that a Halloween-themed Live Ledge is one of the easiest shows to put together. Which is obviously why I host one almost every single year. Finding tracks to play is so easy, even without relying on the standard Halloween tunes that one hears everywhere. Songs about ghosts, witches, zombies, vampires, and other similar subjects are always rampant in rock, so it’s just a matter of scanning the library. This year’s version stands up proudly against all the previous episodes. There’s brand new bands such as Uncle, Rocket 808, and Pale Lips. There’s veteran punk rockers such as The Members, UK Subs, Billy Childish, and The Vibrators. There’s covers of Suicide, David Bowie, and (believe it or not) Tom Petty. There’s really something for everybody, so be sure to play this show next Thursday when the trick or treaters start arriving. After listening, please go purchase those tracks you enjoy!

The Claim special with David Arnold in conversation. They formed around 1980, as part of the independent Medway scene around the nearby towns of Rochester, Chatham and Gillingham and influenced by classic acts such as The Kinks, The Jam, The Clash and The Smiths. Stylistically, they shared much in common with fellow Kent band The Dentists and early Creation Records acts such as The Jasmine Minks. Between 1985 and 1992, The Claim released two albums and various singles and EPs, first on their own record label, and then via Kevin Pearce's Esurient Communications imprint, Bob Stanley's Caff label and the German-based label A Turntable Friend. Their first outing, Armstrong’s Revenge & Eleven Other Short Stories (1985) was followed by the 12" EP This Pencil Was Obviously Sharpened By a Left-Handed Indian Knife Thrower (again on Trick Bag Records). By the time of 1988's Boomy Tella LP, the quality of their politically fused, bittersweet songs had matured considerably, and it is now regarded as their high-water mark. Meanwhile, their single "Wait And See" was recorded at ex-Jam drummer Rick Buckler's studio with ex-Jam producer Vic Coppersmith-Heaven. The Claim also teamed up with the poet and ex-Dentists drummer Vic Templar (an alias for Ian Smith) for various evenings which combined a play, featuring members of The Claim, with a musical performance by the band. Templar also collaborated with The Claim for the song "Mike The Bike", issued as the B-side to perhaps The Claim's most impressive outing, "Birth Of A Teenager", issued as a limited edition single housed in a sleeve designed by the Medway scene's most multi-faceted talent, Billy Childish. For another gig, Welsh band The Manic Street Preachers played their debut London show supporting The Claim. The Claim played their final show in January 1993. None of The Claim's music appeared on CD at the time. Recently, the band themselves compiled a retrospective, Black Path, which was released on Rev-Ola Records in September 2009.[2][3] The band played a reunion gig in Rochester, Kent on 19 September 2009 to coincide with the project's release. On Thursday 25 March 2010, they played at a second reunion show with fellow Medway band The Dentists at Dingwalls in Camden Town, London.

Quietus editors John Doran and Luke Turner surf a cresting wave of liquid chat for sixty minutes peppered with new music by ILL, Arabrot, Anna Meredith, Kiran Leonard, Jessy Lanza, Zayn and Fat White Family; not to mention copper bottomed exclusives by Billy Childish, Knifeworld and the first ever airing of the Gary Numan/John Foxx collaboration 'Talk (Are You Listening To Me?)'. Graham Day & The Forefathers were formed to “crank out choice cuts from four Graham Day-fronted bands - The Prisoners, The Prime Movers, The Solarflares and The Gaolers - distilling 30-odd years of high quality song writing, lo-fi production and high energy performance to their stripped down Garage-Rock essence”. Steve from Retro Man Blog meets up with Graham and his long-time bandmates Allan Crockford and Wolf Howard to discuss their forthcoming album “Good Things”, which sees them finally coming to terms with an outstanding musical legacy. They candidly talk us through their fascinating history and pick out a few favourite songs from each of the line-ups. Along the way we also discuss and play some of the other bands and artists they have worked with over the years, such as The James Taylor Quartet, Billy Childish, The Daggermen, The Spartan Dreggs, The Galileo 7 and Planet. Generously sound-tracked by a hand-picked selection of over twenty songs from the trio’s varied career, including some exclusive tracks from the new album “Good Things”, this Podcast is a must-have for every die-hard fan and a perfect taster for those newcomers wanting an introduction to one of Britain’s best ever songwriters. Just the thought of what the Boyracer family's record collection must look like brings a tear to my eye. Oh Boy and Howdy everybody - Long time since my last podcast and all apologies. You must understand that these times dissertations are cause for desperation and all my education has left me little time for communication. And so I've managed to pull myself together just in time for the monthlies 05. Lets get it on.01. John Lee Hooker - Hard Hearted WomanThe always esteem-able and vital, played here because you can never have to much of a good Hooker.02. Holy Modal Rounders - SynergyA supremely weird song that, I do believe, precedes the "paradigm shift" "synergy" of boardroom culture by a solid two scores worth of years. Take that to the bank you filthy suit bastards.03. Thee Headcoats - MantrapChrist, I can't shake the feeling that I must have played this one before. Not sure when or where. No matter. Billy Childish led this outfit of misfits in his own personal means of exercising his demons. Hard luck with that as twenty years later he's still trying. 04. Cocorosie - Terrible AngelsFrom La Maison de Mon Rêve, an album I specifically skipped trying to pronounce on the air. 05. Pink Martini - Anna (El Negro Zunbon)One of the best little outfits from P-town still gets respect from the swinging cats down at Carnegie Hall. Pink Martini just came out with a new album too - Hey Eugene! and, best of news, they did it by sticking with the small imprint label Heinz Records. 06. John Mayhill - Mexico CityI can find nothing on this guy - real shame too. Even though he's got some generic vocal belts - the genius is all in the song's parodic tone and the call and response duet. Which makes me curious as to if he was smart enough to do it twice or if this was just a one off fluke.07. La Piedrera - El Cool DudeThe accordion is the international instrument of honest music. Anyone who has ever tried "ironic" accordion compositions has in fact met their horrible demise the ragged clutches of the squeeze box man's dancing monkey. And rightfully so. 08. Al Caiola - Experiment In TerrorCause nothing says summer like a latin flavored string guitar set based on the idea of Terror. I get all goose pimply when the brass swings into it in the second half. The Horror. 09. Har-You Percussion Group - Feel Me GoodSocial activists, deteriorated youth, and funk. I wonder what happened to these kids. 10. Bango - Motor MaravilhaThe left behind and forgotten of the 60's Brazilian Psychedelic Movement.11. Barney Bigard Sextet - Sweet Marijuana BrownRecorded in '45 this little ditty came out long after the respectability of jazz was all about the understated background music and had not yet been blown apart by the cool. An interesting time and this song plays more like a crooner than anything else.12. Contours - Can You Jerk Like MeSoul Singing Motown players - they pushed this onto vinyl in '65. And unlike the Barney Bigard Sextet track it has no intentional subtext.13. Optiganally Yours - Walk & Chew GumFor those who are curious the Optigan is a little toy record player which played small instrument records to produce sounds. And yes the band is based on this device. 14. Rusty York - TremblinAs a son of a coal miner this bluegrass influenced rockabilly promoter put up a lot of works and has even got a place over at the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. 15. David Karsten Daniels - Jesus and the DevilKeeping the summer spirit alive DKD gets the best of the whatsits on this podcast. Happiness and don't forget to pick up his latest work over on Fat Cat Records. 15. Albert Washington - Bettie JaneA nice roiling bongo beat propels this stripped down hybrid of blues and soul towards the duets saucy descriptions of the eponymous girl.16. Lazy Lexi's mystery track!Everybody's talking about the president. But what do they say?17. Polyphonic Spree - Section 12 (Hold Me Now)June 19th people and the newest albums drops - the Spree is getting militant! Inspirational, like Ana says, these folks give you something to smile about.18. The Owls - AirOh you've probably heard of them. 19. The Roulettes - JunkThe instrumental modset brings the fury with this keyboard driven powerhouse. Thanks for tuning in everybody - just a heads up. Like I say in the podcast I'm shifting to a bi-monthly format because of time constraints due to summer school. But if anybody wants to submit a guest podcast drop me a line.image from: adamcadre.acbacking tracks: Keisuke Egusa - Summer Samba; April Aloisio - Nica's; Dream; Skatallites - James Bond Theme; Yesterdays New Quintet - Daylight; Yardbirds - Honey In Your Hips.
Another boisterous hour of music to show what little I've accomplished this month with my life. In jest though. Actually this month was exceedingly good in terms of what I've managed to do, school, work, etc are plodding along a staid course and I managed to do enough extracurricular math on the side to test out of math class and into math 206. Thrilling right? So on to the tunes. This month I want to highlight for your listening enjoyment my new favorite obscure band The Godz - a group hailing from NYC their infinitely weird take on music was unable to secure the necessary interest of times and the group has since faded to an odious obscurity. For my part in reviving this tragic tale I hereby swear to play too much of them for anyone who has actual taste in music. Also the last track has a bounty on it - $50 to the first person to name it and the artist. 01. Love - Stephanie Know WhoLove is back for another round with this frighteningly paranoid lovers perception of infidelity. Good times!02. 1910 Fruitgum Company - 1, 2, 3 Red LightSaccharine sweetness oozes around the doughy flesh tinged corners of this nearly unbearable pap. Nothing against the original artists - who as I understand it were actually rather accomplished set musicians later shoe horned by managers into the role of a late 60's easy-pop boy band for the interests of shear greed alone. This track, amazingly, is not the worst they have offer - no that would be the infamous "Simon Says" a song so mundanely trite I had forgotten I'd ever heard it until I listened to it again while doing research for this month.03. Human Beinz - Nobody but MeSo the sound of easy-pop done right? The Human Beinz and the machine staccato of drums that opens to the loose rising riffs of guitar capped on top by the melodic "No, No, No, No, No" vocals. Jangling it's way into your heart. 04. G.P. Chiti & S. Montori - Desperation and Money (Cindelic Records)60's Italian b-grade movie soundtracks kick just that much ass. 05. Jennifer Gentle - Take My HandAnother Italian act, by God but this one is good and - drum roll - contemporary to myself with an nicely kicking album with American distributor sub pop.06. Beck - We Dance Alone (acoustic)Recently recorded over at WXPN as a part of NPR backed World Cafe. A good listen to those who doubt song craft of this eclectic musician.07. The Godz - Lay in the SunOh man it doesn't get any further out than that. The perfect protopunk psychedelic sound.08. Thee Headcoats - All My Feelings DeniedMan there is a lot of noise going on in here - my apologies to anyone not entirely blinded by the sheer fire of the manic force that is Billy Childish.09. Johnny Pate - Can't Even Walk in the Park. Johnny Pate, a long lived and ranging career - there is more beneath the surface of this soundtrack than just the glittering funk one might expect. Beginning as a jazz bassist in the thirties by the forties he'd even cut his own Blue Note session. The fifties saw him break the Billboard top 20, playing tuba and setting up arrangements. This lead him to fame and success with Curtis Mayfield and B.B. King and finally landing a gig in Hollywood for the music production of "Shaft in Africa".10. Meri Wilson - Telephone ManOh shit - the CD BABY strikes again! Meri is still making music and it turns out that the Friendly Staff of CD Baby are pedaling her wares. I didn't find this till it was too late to put in the audio for the month. Apologies and excuses to all involved.11. Soft Machine w/ Hibuo AnemoneThey once lit the madness of the masses with swirling psychedelic sounds swaths and jazz ornamentation. Now they are just known as the nearly made its and also rans - a shame since they really had something else going on.12. Cat Empire - Two ShoesThis is the Year of Cat Empire - my prediction is the pods will leverage interest into the band that will then jettison them into the lower hundred of the Billboard and MRM. Did I totally miss them when they came to town? yes. Did my friend Andre actually do PR for the shows and try to get me to go by bringing over CDs and Posters? yep. Do I regret?I regret nothing. Favorite line: "A child is Born / Where's He Born? / In the SUUUUUUUUN!"14. Moving Sidewalks - 99th FloorFuture ZZTop frontman lays down the Texas tracks and precedes Jimi Hendrix on stage? Hallucinatory terrain surly.15. Harry Nilsson - 1941Harry claims The Beatles were his fans. Well I guess that makes sense. There is a strong English story telling thread that the two groups share.16. The Majority - One ThirdThe problem here is not just obscurity but obscurity combined with common search terms. Yes searching for One Third Majority often pulls up references to democratic processes. 17. The Coasters - Down Home GirlA laid back cover with a funk dollop from the one and onlys. 18. Mystery Track - I don't even know. ARGH frustrated by the complete failure of my ability to know who the hell I am listening to - I hereby offer a $50 dollar bounty for the first person who can name this artist and song.
