Solénoïde (23.10.2023) - Cette semaine, Solénoïde explore à nouveau le vaste territoire des musiques paysagistes et climatiques. La "Solénosphère 27" vous entraînera dans un éden sonore où les talents méconnus prospèrent, où les poussières cosmiques se mêlent aux vents oniriques. Au cœur de ce voyage immobile, le programme mettra en lumière des productions qui privilégient les timbres sonores et les espaces, souvent associés à des caractéristiques visuelles ou atmosphériques. Cet épisode rendra hommage au regretté Ryuichi Sakamoto, icône de la pop synthétique et avant-gardiste, à travers la compilation "All Micro Ambient Music". Plus de 40 artistes célèbrent la mémoire de ce musicien japonais à travers des compositions inédites, imprégnées d'ambient minimale, parfois enrichies de touches de classique contemporain et de field recordings. Cette Solénosphère nous offrira trois extraits de cette compilation, réunissant des compatriotes de Sakamoto ainsi que des pointures internationales de l'ambient, telles qu'Alva Noto, David Toop et Federico Durand.

Solénoïde (25.09.2023) - Le 16e album de Forrest Fang fait partie de ces pépites rares de musique atmosphérique hybride et sophistiquée. Sur "The Fata Morgana Dream" (Projekt Records), le californien nous offre la possible bande-son d'un rêve éveillé, aux limites du minimalisme contemporain et de l'ambient ethnique. Cet opus, aux effluves naturalistes et extrême-orientales, a été désigné 'radiobalisage' de cette Mission 209. Valeur montante de la scène techno-dub internationale, le grec Jay Glass Dubs propose avec son opus "Epitaph" (Bokeh Versions) une odyssée sonique constellée d'effets et d'échos cybernétiques. Tandis que la danoise Marylin Mazur, figure culte de la scène jazz contemporaine, a réuni autour d'elle dix musiciennes scandinaves pour signer une partition détonante intitulée "Shamania" (RareNoise). Un projet qui couvre une large palette d'expressions allant du jazz vocal au free-jazz, en passant par les musiques nouvelles et la pop arty.

In retrospect, it was inevitable. When high quality portable tape recorders became available after World War II, ethnomusicologists took them into the field to document the living folk music traditions of Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and beyond. Then came the 12" LP record in 1948, and these recordings began to circulate around the world, as specialty labels like the Nonesuch Explorer Series inspired an era of cross-cultural influences and collaborations. Ethnic artists traveled west to perform and record, while western musicians traveled far and wide to engage with these genres. Ambient and electronic artists who created music for virtual travel were highly receptive to these influences, and in time they evolved the sophisticated World/Ambient styles we have today. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we return to the place where world music meets ambient, on a program called AMBIENT TRAVELER 3. Solénoïde (07.11.2022) - Reflet subjectif d 'une actualité discographique foisonnante, cette mission 224 nous fera papillonner dans les espaces luxuriants d'un jazz nordique irisé par les ‘pedal steel' et "shankar slide" guitares du norvégien Geir Sundstol. Net changement de cap avec le collectif de chambre français Snowdrops qui dévoilera un troisième album, "Missing Island", toujours aussi mélancolique et sophistiqué, se frayant une voie entre classique contemporain et post-folk. De facture plus onirique, le dernier projet du sino-américain Forrest Fang prendra la forme d'un subtil massage auditif effectué au moyen de divers instruments asiatiques traités électroniquement, sur fond de trames synthétiques éthérées. Enfin, une place privilégiée sera réservée au designer sonore Mathias Delplanque et à son 16e album "Ô Seuil" qui servira de fil rouge à ce programme. Un album complexe et accessible qui démontre l'habileté de son auteur à produire des fictions sonores évolutives et haletantes. Rassemblant guitares, basse, synthés analogiques, vielle à roue ou cornemuse vendéenne, 5 extraits de ce disque permettront d'apprécier le talent multipolaire du Nantais. L'occasion, à travers ce fil rouge, de (re)découvrir ce grand collectionneur d'instruments extrême-orientaux passé maître dans l'art des soundscapes électroniques à vocation ésotérique ! Puis, le parisien Philippe Foch nous guidera dans le monde de la percussion indienne en pulsant le tabla dans tous les sens, au contact du sampler, du piano comme de la cornemuse. Viendra ensuite le moment de se laisser magnétiser par deux esprits créatifs: ceux du chypriote Yannis Kyriakides et du néerlandais Andy Moor, qui réussissent une nouvelle alchimie entre guitare, bouzouki et computer ! Et enfin, c'est The Kandinsky Effect, un power trio balloté entre Paris et New York, qui accouchera d'une œuvre urbaine et versatile, croisant jazz, post-rock et paysages électroniques.

Of all the artists that have been featured on Hearts of Space, due to his wide influence, theoretical brilliance, and tireless innovation — no one has earned a celebratory retrospective more than JON HASSELL. An avant-garde composer and inventor of "Fourth World" music, he described it as "a unified primitive/futuristic sound combining features of world ethnic styles with advanced electronic techniques." Jon Hassell died this week at the age of 84. We'll work on that retrospective, but for now we'll use one of his classics to introduce a program of the kind of globe-trotting, culture-hopping, creative ambient he inspired. Talking of electric, as promised we have Andy Pickford’s second epic release Shadows Of The Gate, Dream is the more synthesised album from Ex Tangerine Dream member Steve Jolliffe, Erik Wøllo, with his diverse and sweeping 2CD release, Different Spaces, Synthesist/multi-instrumentalist Forrest Fang’s mesmerizing and emotive electronic-ambience on Follow The Ether Sun, ORGHANON’s manifesto to produce music with a strong cinematographic appeal, Berlin school fans will enjoy MTA Lab’s slowly evolving sequences and making his debut on here, Interstellarismusic, full of atmospherics interlacing moods, static-hypnotic sequences, various rhythms and varied melodies. The title pretty much says it all - this mix is a field recording mix.  I think I've done 3 field mixes in the past but haven't done one in a long time.  So I thought it was time for another sonic exploration. The track that got me thinking about doing a new field mix was "El Divisader" by Chris Watson from the excellent "El Tren Fantasma" album.  Really a phenomenal track. The mix starts with some church bells that I slowed down & messed with, the we get the Chris Watson track and from there the mix uses a variety of artists a field recordings to make an interesting(I hope) journey through various sonic landscapes.
