A (relatively) in-depth analysis of the rock classic (Don't Fear) The Reaper by Blue Öyster Cult (as well as some other stuff) in just under thirty minutes. The song, written and sung by lead guitarist Donald 'Buck Dharma' Roeser is taken from the 1976 album Agents of Fortune and explores the theme of eternal love and the inevitability of death. The band name Blue Öyster Cult features an umlaut. The 'metal umlaut' (also known as röck döts) has also been used in the names of several rock or heavy metal bands such as Queensrÿche, Motörhead, the Accüsed, Mötley Crüe, Spın̈al Tap and Green Jellÿ.The song has been featured extensively in film, TV and media: Stephen King named the song as one of the inspirations for his novel The Stand (the lyrics are quoted at the beginning of the novel). The song also appears as the opening theme for the 1994 TV serial based on the novel. The song can be heard playing in a car in the 1978 film Halloween and was used again in the 2022 sequel Halloween Ends, during the ending credits. It can be heard playing on a van radio during the 2022 horror film X and is played during the end credits of The Simpsons episode 'The Parent Rap'. The song has been featured in two series on Netflix: '1899' and 'Orange Is the New Black' and was even the subject of a Saturday Night Live comedy sketch in 2000.In this episode I am in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber.Mathew Woodallhttps://buymeacoffee.com/lownoiseWhy buy me a coffee?Low Noise is proudly ad-free. Vodafone Ireland is encouraging Irish users to unlock the full potential of their mobile phones by enabling the hidden Wi-Fi Calling feature to improve their phone network experience. Available on most Apple and Android devices, Wi-Fi Calling, also known as VoWi-Fi, allows users to make and receive calls in any location where you are connected to a Wi-Fi network, even if there is no regular phone signal or poor indoor coverage. This easy-to-use feature allows calls to be made using Wi-Fi, ensuring seamless communication, even in areas with challenging signal conditions. While mobile networks technology is continually advancing and improving for the better, network coverage may occasionally be influenced by structural, natural, and geographical factors. Consequently, mobile users may experience varying levels of cellular network as they go about their daily activities, especially in areas with unique signal conditions. By enabling VoWi-Fi, users can experience consistent call quality and connectivity, regardless of their location. Fiona Sheridan, Head of Network Deployment for Vodafone Ireland said: "Vodafone has been consistently recognised as the best mobile network in Ireland by independent awards such as nPerf and Umlaut. Even so, we want to enhance our customers network experience even more. By activating the Wi-Fi Calling feature, users can fully utilise their mobile phones, ensuring uninterrupted communication even in areas with weak signal coverage. This feature leverages Wi-Fi to make calls, offering consistent call quality and connectivity, without any additional costs. We encourage all our customers to enable VoWi-Fi and enjoy the benefits of seamless communication, no matter where they are." Wi-Fi Calling Providing seamless call quality, VoWi-Fi offers connection without fuss, and all from places that regular phone signal cannot reach - no separate app needed. At no extra cost or hidden charges, Vodafone VoWi-Fi calling is charged at the same rate as making a call over the cellular network. Users can enable VoWi-Fi Calling on their iOS and Android mobile device by enabling the feature in 'Settings' and switching the toggle 'Wi-Fi Calling' to the 'On' position, then click 'OK' to confirm. Three steps to set up Wi-Fi Calling on iOS/Apple: From your start screen - select Settings then Mobile Service Select Wi-Fi Calling Toggle Wi-Fi Calling to the on position, then click Enable to confirm Three steps to set up Wi-Fi Calling on Android: From your Home screen select Phone Tap the menu on the top-right then select Settings Toggle Wi-Fi Calling to the on position then click OK to confirm 4G Calling Want even more connectivity? Experience seamless, high-quality calls with 4G Calling, also known as VoLTE. This feature is also available to Vodafone customers with compatible devices, allowing seamless, high-quality calls to take place via mobile wherever the user has access the 4G network. Like with Wi-Fi Calling, 4G Calling has no effect on the user's data streaming, enabling users to carry on multi-tasking - watch videos, use apps, or do anything that uses data - all while enjoying consistent call quality. To learn more or to check if your phone supports 4G and Wi-Fi Calling, please visit your local Vodafone store or visit Vodafone WiFi Calling.

Vodafone Ireland has been named the best mobile network for the 9th consecutive year by independent benchmarking organisation umlaut. It assessed all mobile networks available and is the most comprehensive test in Ireland. Vodafone has also been recognised as the 'Best Choice' for broadband and mobile converged services. For mobile, the company achieved 'Best in Test' and scored highest above its competitors, with a score of 922 points out of 1000, the highest score ever received for mobile in Ireland. As well as number one nationwide, Vodafone has received "Best in Reliability" with the highest score across this category. Amanda Nelson, CEO of Vodafone Ireland, said: "We are absolutely delighted with this external recognition of the reliable network experience our mobile and fixed customers enjoy. Our entire team at Vodafone Ireland are passionate about ensuring 'always on' connectivity for our customers in homes and businesses throughout the country. We are committed to investing in our network and customer experience, and to score the highest marks ever for any mobile network in Ireland is a great moment and validation of that work." Umlaut, which this year assessed more than 200 networks in over 120 countries, tested and measured the performance of networks offering both mobile and fixed broadband converged services across Ireland for the first time. In conducting the mobile benchmark analysis, umlaut carries out a 5,500 km drive and walk test, across five cities, 16 towns and all major roads with 10,000 voice calls and 75,000 data sessions. This equates to 40% population coverage. The true customer experience is even more extensive, using crowd-sourced data from 98% of the population and testing an area of 62,962 km2. To measure fixed broadband, 3.7 million samples were collected from 4187 lines. Vodafone Ireland is amongst the top-performing mobile networks worldwide. When it came to converged broadband services, Vodafone came out on top for fixed broadband with an overall score of 941 points out of 1,000. The recognition comes as Vodafone continues to invest in its network. Following its €300 million investment over the last three years, an additional €500 million is currently being deployed over the next four years to enhance services for customers. The investment in the network includes the shut off of 3G and transition to the stronger and more sustainable 4G and 5G networks to provide the most reliable network experience across Ireland. The 3G shut-off has already been successful in Limerick, Cork, and Galway city, with Dublin City set to follow in the coming weeks. Earlier this year, Vodafone won the award for Best Mobile Performance in 2023 with nPerf for the 2nd year in a row. Nperf points are calculated based on five key performance indicators (KPIs) of Download Speed, Upload Speed, Latency, Web browsing and YouTube Streaming. Vodafone came out on top across Upload Speed, Latency, Web browsing and YouTube Streaming. The mobile operator Vodafone has been awarded ‘Best in test' by the independent assessment company Umlaut. It was adjudged to be best for reliability and best for voice calls in Ireland. However, the tests were carried out on Samsung only devices. The report also comes as Vodafone's 3G services are about to be shut down. Joe spoke to Amanda Nelson the Chief Executive of Vodafone Ireland.

Bar McKinnon is one of those guys who are first off well-versed in so many things music that it seems as if they can talk about anything and everything all at once anywhere and everywhere. However, secondly, he might be the most energetic and enthusiastic guys you might meet out there - one can feel the Zoom connection beaming and gleaming when he starts to give a detailed answer. Why do we talk to him? Well, Umlaut, Teleorkestra and Bungle! Bar McKinnon is a multi-instrumentalist with a strong focus on the saxophone and as he is very versatile and a virtuoso it might have been a match-made in weirdo heaven when he joined Mr Bungle a few decades ago. One can hear his skills on the band's first three published full-lengths and he even wrote a few songs and parts on each album. After the millenium he left the band and started several projects one of them being Umlaut, an avantgarde jazz-pop band which released a few things here and there and who are surely a force to listen to. As they just released a new single (see beneath), we are very happy to have him on the show in order to talk pop music, subversity and more! Enjoy!

After a brief confrontation with the natives of Umlaut's dreamland, the Norseman must once again face off against a cursed beast, this time against Nya Gwaheh, the Naked Bear. Once slain, they're free to settle in the land of plenty and live out the rest of their days raising families, harvesting grain, and assisting the Beothuk battle their adversaries. Will Thor and Umlaut indeed settle down or will the Norns compel them to return to their Viking ways?
Sailing in the direction of Greenland, the Vikings are caught in a devastating storm and struggle to save their ship and crew. When the storm finally passes and dawn arrives, they find themselves off course and approaching the coast of a new land. The trees match those of Umlaut's dream, as well as the natives who promptly introduce themselves with arrows.
Reaching Iceland, Thor and Umlaut come upon a settlement and receive a heroes' welcome. Together with Kari's brothers and Brother Brendan, the Vikings are sent on a quest by the village leader Ingolfur to kill a monster in its mountain lair. Facing their greatest challenge yet, some of the warriors choose to die in battle, while others choose to flee in defeat.

Back in Trondheim, Thor and Umlaut discover that in their absence Smooth-Tooth has been spreading lies about them to King Harold. When Thor asks for permission to marry the king's cousin Kari, it is decided that only a judicial battle will settle the matter. Accepting the ruling, the karls fight against Smooth-Tooth and his brother Yngwie Hump, only to later find themselves being run out of the village by the sore losers' uncle Bolg the Bulge and a mob of his kin. Fortunately, Umlaut has had a dream of a strange new land awaiting them.

One random EP! And a book! And another book! There's so much to digest in this universally excellent deluxe set and Get Back book, that this is officially a THREE PART EPISODE. Buckle up, Untitled Beatle People... And, sure, you can say Part 1 of this deep dish is attractively built, even if you've never let us be naked. Uh, what? Exactly. And as if there wasn't a ton of Let It Be material to cover, Tony & T.J. still find time to ask the hard questions, like:

Tim Smolens is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, recording engineer and producer that is/was a pivotal member of bands such as Estradasphere, I.S.S. (Ideal Social Situation), High Castle Teleorkestra and Don Salsa. Tim has also recorded and toured with various acts such as Secret Chiefs 3 and Amanda Palmer (of the Dresden Dolls). Tim is known for his elaborate, multi-layered recording productions/compositions and his keen insight into the advanced chord progressions that serve as the foundation for all sophisticated western music. Largely self taught, Tim has obsessively studied the harmonic progressions and unique production style of Brian Wilson (Beach Boys) and successfully employed them as a distinct element in his own sound. In 2015 Tim moved from Los Angeles to Denver, Colorado with his wife and 2 kids (Prisca and Cruz) and works as an Emergency department nurse at a local trauma center. After a long hiatus (10 years) from recording music, Tim finally released the long-awaited follow up to the 2002 debut, by ISS, "Forget About the Girl." 2018's sophomore release by ISS, entitled "She's a Girl," may be Tim's best work in 50s/60s pop yet. In 2019 Tim began a collaboration with a fan that he met online, guitarist Chris Bogen. The duo released a painstaking version of Steely Dan's lost masterpiece "The Second Arrangement." They enjoyed their first collaboration so much that they decided to form a new remote band, High Castle Teleorkestra. High Castle Teleorkestra (HCT) is a remote music ensemble whose members have played in various ground-breaking bands such as Estradasphere, Mr. Bungle, Farmer's Market, Umlaut, Probosci, I.S.S., Don Salsa, Secret Chiefs 3 and more. Comprised of middle-aged collaborators scattered about the globe, HCT focuses on superbly-produced, pluridimensional, enigmatic recordings. HCT's music is not unlike what might be expected from a group with such a diverse collective musical résumé, yet is somehow fresh, vibrant, and dare we say mature in its eclectic cadence. The musical terrain traversed by this largely instrumental group includes long forgotten European waltz's with untimely bursts of "Vaudeville Grindcore", Italian cinema erotica, Romanian gypsy metal, 50's sci-fi-surf instrumentals, various unorthodox uses of metal (including Stravinsky adaptations), songs in the 47/64 meter, non-standard tuning systems, a variety of special guests, and much more. There are densely layered productions enriched by obsessive attention to detail, starkly unrelated genre superimposition, unclassifiable styles, ultra-refined chord progressions, sonic timbres that Joe Meek would've been proud of, inscrutable metric modulations and more. Despite the wide array of styles, the recordings are surprisingly cohesive. There is an odd mixture of hi-fi and lo-fi components that converge to make aesthetically pleasing recordings that sound as if they were produced on a 1970's 2-inch tape machine. Despite the convenient aid of modern machinery in our productions, HCT cuts no corners, and even runs their final mixes to JH110B ¼ inch analog tape to round out their warm sound. HCT has released to deluxe double singles available on their website and is currently working on their first full length release, tentatively slated for Fall 2021 release.

#podcast #fashion #brand
