“Excel at what you can’t control. A lot of people say ‘control what you can control.’ But I think you excel at those things that you can’t control because those are the things that are gonna keep you until you get your breakthrough.” As an “undersized and overmatched” NFL running back, Justin Forsett became an underdog fan favorite. He’s brought this same scrappiness to his work as an entrepreneur as the creator of the ShowerPill. We discussed Justin’s journey as an athlete and brand builder this week on the On Brand Podcast. About Justin Forsett Justin Forsett is an NFL Running Back and Pro Bowl Player. He was ranked #65 of the Top 100 players of 2015. He’s been described as a powerful player despite being “undersized and overmatched.” At 5’8”, Justin became an underdog fan favorite in the NFL. Drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the 7th round in the 2008 NFL Draft, Forsett started his 9-year football career in which he played with 7 different teams. He is a podcast host on LeBron James’ UNINTERRUPTED Podcast Network, featured in Sports Illustrated, and appears in the final episode of Long Shot. Justin is a writer, sporting news contributor, and radio broadcast color analyst. Justin’s skills as an entrepreneur and inventor found him featured on ABC’s Shark Tank as the creator of the ShowerPill. Justin spends his time dedicated to helping victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. He is an expert on leadership, overcoming adversity, and perseverance. Episode Highlights Justin’s journey as an entrepreneur started while he was playing. “Two years after retiring, 80% of players end up bankrupt, divorced, or depressed.” Being a player became part of their identity. Justin wanted to be more than his accomplishments on the field. “Entrepreneurship is a sexy word but it’s a lot of work.” And, keep in mind, this is coming from a professional athlete. Since the brand’s launch in 2014, ShowerPill has taken off … “We found the tribe that really loves the product and really gets it. We like to say that where we win is at the point of sweat.” Carried in all Target stores, ShowerPill brand building focuses on awareness and education to define the active care space between “hustle and hygiene.” What brand has made Justin smile recently? Forsett pointed us to another innovative product — Welly. This new brand comes from Eric Ryan, founder of Method and Olly. "Your best ability is your availability." Being Prepared For Your Opportunity Undersized and overmatched, at 5'8" Justin Forsett had plenty of reasons to give up on becoming a full-time NFL starter. It wasn't until 2014 at age 29 that Forsett "came out of nowhere" and proved them all wrong. Forsett spent parts of four seasons (2008-11) with Seattle and the 2012 season with the Texans. He played in nine games for the Jaguars in 2013 before injuring his foot, forcing him to miss the remainder of the season. Forsett spent more than two seasons with the Ravens, including one Pro Bowl year in which he took the league by storm in 2014. He was named to the Pro Bowl in 2015 following his most successful season in the NFL, and ranked #65 on the NFL's Top 100 Players of 2015. After breaking his arm midway through the 2105 season, recovering, and playing just nine more games with the Ravens, the Detroit Lions, and the Denver Broncos, Forsett announced his retirement from the NFL on May 3, 2017. Justin, however, will be defined by much more than his stats. Justin was a cherished fan favorite and big part of the community. He spent much of his time spreading advice and encouragement to his teammates and anyone he worked with. A Christian man of integrity, he was extremely active in volunteering to help those in need, the Baltimore community in particular, who embraced him back. When speaking to audiences, Justin has a genuine desire to positively impact others with his message of perseverance through life’s disappointments. His witty and down-to-earth personality engages audiences from corporate environments to youth groups as he shares his inspirational journey of hope, focus, determination, and the importance of legacy. Justin is now the CEO of Shower Pill the active care wipe for every body that you can now find at Target! Justin Forsett (@JForsett), NFL Pro Bowl RB with the Baltimore Ravens and several other teams over a 9-year NFL career joins us to discuss the company he co-founded, Shower Pill (@ShowerPill), and his big pitch on ABC's Shark Tank. Forsett discusses the lengthy process to get in front of the Sharks on ABC's hit TV show, the results of the pitch and the idea behind starting Shower Pill with 2 former football teammates from Cal. Forsett also discusses the value of building business relationships during an athlete's playing career, saving money while you're earning as a pro athlete and using the spotlight and platform as a pro athlete to impact positive change in the world.
Former NFL running back Justin Forsett, Motus Global injury expert Will Carroll, Mike Wobschall of Vikings Entertainment Network and Dennis Farrell from Fantasy Football Geekly join NFL No Huddle hosts Kordell Stewart and Brian Webber, who discuss the return of Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliot from his six-game suspension this weekend and discuss the best possible Super Bowl match ups.
“Scared money doesn’t make money.” Forsett was undersized by most NFL standards, especially for one of the most grueling positions in the league. He's disciplined, motivated, thoughtful, and intelligent. Yet these are only a few of the characteristics that helped the 5 foot 8 running back cut, duck, and spin through NFL defenses. Forsett led a dual life as an NFL running back and co-founder of Shower Pill - athletic body wipes developed for post-workout cleansing when showers aren't readily available. Now fresh off retirement, Forsett and I discuss the challenges of building a business, raising money, marketing, and product sell-through. His approach and mindset is fascinating. Notable, and former all-everything San Francisco 49er, Ronnie Lott, is his business mentor. Welcome to Suiting Up, where professional lacrosse player, operator and investor, Paul Rabil, talks to influencers within the world of sports to examine the modern duality of a professional athlete.
“Why be good when great is available?” — Justin Forsett Denver Bronco Justin Forsett grew up as a pastor’s son in a small town in Florida, where he dreamed of playing professional football. However, due to his small stature, many recruiters and coaches overlooked him throughout his career. In this episode, Justin shares his story, from the lessons he learned from his father growing up to the sacrifice his parents made to give him and his brothers a better life and more opportunities for success. He explains the role of self-reflection in developing your strengths, why vulnerability is essential to growth and how serving others can bring out the best in you and give you freedom. At the end of this episode, you’ll be inspired to face your challenges and be great. Inspirational quotes from today’s interview: “Not a lot of people make it out to accomplish their dreams and goals.” — Justin Forsett ”[My dad] taught me early on what hard work looks like.” — Justin Forsett “It’s a sacrifice that they made so that their kids could have a better future and do things that they were never able to do.” — Justin Forsett “Being a pro is something I could attain if I had faith in it and put work into it. I was going to do whatever it took.” — Justin Forsett “Sometimes it takes only one person to believe in you.” — Justin Forsett “Excel in what you can control.” — Justin Forsett “Without being vulnerable, you can’t grow.” — Justin Forsett “My identity had become my work. How I felt and my emotions were dependent on how I was performing on the field.” — Justin Forsett “I didn’t need my job for me to have significance. My significance didn’t depend on how well I perform at my job. My significance is about me and who God created me to be.” — Justin Forsett “Football is what I do; it’s not who I am.” –Justin Forsett “I learned that had to surrender. I had to let go.” — Justin Forsett “Serving can do so much for other people, but it also helps you.” — Justin Forsett “If you live for people’s acceptance, you’ll die from their rejection.” — Lecrae “Be you. Be great.” — Justin Forsett “Enjoy the journey and process. Who would run the ball in Gary Kubiak’s offense? Today we're left wondering who will run the ball in Marc Trestman's offense.
