In the second and final hour of tonight's show, Matt Pauley begs the question, “What are legitimate expectations of the Cardinals this year?” In an NL Central that is not teeming with powerhouse teams, the Cardinals have a clear path to the top- will their injuries and aged rotation hold them back? Matt is joined by friend-of-the-program Dani Wexelman, who is an analyst for MLB Network Radio and ESPN, to discuss Opening Day, the Cardinals' offseason moves, and the city of Balitmore's response to the collapse of the Francis Scott Key bridge. Black men jailed, wrongfully accused, and arrested. One technology at the center of it all. Police use facial recognition to link people to crimes they did not commit. Atlanta News First exposes cases from Atlanta, Balitmore, New York, to Louisiana. A common denominator is that law enforcement agencies are not following policy because the policy does not exist. Randall Reid was arrested in Atlanta for a robbery which occurred in a city he never visited. Before his case, it happened to two other fathers on the East Coast. Today, the list grows. As it turns out, bias can be embedded in facial recognition software. Which means in the search for suspects, there's a list of new victims. While more police agencies are beginning to use the technology, other non-law enforcement state entities are following their lead. *******RACIAL PROFILING AT THE GATEPlainclothes drug agents search innocent passengers at airport gates across the United States, looking for cash. The drug agents seize anything over $5,000 if the passenger can't prove — on the spot — that their own money didn't come from drug trafficking. The government seizes the cash when no drugs are found, without arresting the traveler or charging them with a crime. The DEA gets to keep the money it seizes. Our ongoing investigation revealed that passengers selected for what the government calls “random, consensual encounters” are actually profiled by the drug agents who search Black men far more often than any other group of passengers. We analyzed data showing that, for drug agents to find just one passenger with money, they have to publicly search 10 departing passengers. Some of those profiled passengers are left deeply scarred by the process, even when nothing is seized.******* Poisoned without permissionThree scientists are calling for more testing of a dangerous toxin impacting residents who live in the Rome, Georgia, area. It's in response to an Atlanta News First investigation that uncovered elevated levels of the chemical compound in some residents' blood. For decades, the Oostanaula River that supplied Rome's drinking water was contaminated with perfluoroalkyl (PFAS). The chemical group is linked to serious illness, including cancer.City officials switched to a different water source in 2017, but many residents have always wondered how the contaminated water impacted them prior to the disclosure. When the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) said it didn't have plans to investigate, Atlanta News First Investigates purchased testing kits that can measure the total values of some of the most common PFAS and asked Rome-area residents to test their blood.

This week, we air two segments. South Carolina Prisoner, "J" First, "J" is in segregation in a South Carolina prison. He does not give his full name or the prison he's inside for reasons of personal safety. You'll hear him share a bit about his experience of the prison strike from the inside, the repression of prisoners at his facilities, prisoner unity in the strike, the high costs of living in prison and poor quality of food and other goods available and the red herring of administration that cell phones are the cause of violence. He shares condolences for families of those who were killed at Lee Correctional, the guard-instigated violence in April that sparked the call for the Nationwide Prison Strike. J also shares his thanks of outside supporters who have demonstrated outside of his facility, IWOC in particular and those who've helped to carry prisoners words around the world. To hear updates on the strike, again, we suggest y'all check out prisonstrike.com and the sites it links, as well as recent episodes of the IGDpodcast, The Hot Wire, Kiteline & Rustbelt Abolition Radio, all members of the Channel Zero Network. Resisting Nuclear Trash in Bure, France After that, for the bulk of the episode shares words from Daniel, who is involved in resistance to the building of a nuclear waste storage facility in the Gran Est (formerly Alsace-Champagne-Ardenne-Lorraine or ACAL) region near the French border with Germany. This infrastructure mega project threatens to poison the ground-water that feeds Paris, poison the ground in Gran Est and for villages like Bure where Daniel is based, and the resistance to the CIGEO storage facility has been met by harsh government repression and a heavy response police response. Daniel talks about the energy infrastructure in France, the military and colonial connection with the fuel of Uranium, comparisons to the ZAD at Notre Dame de Landes in Western France, resistance to other damaging power sources like in the Hambach Forest against a huge lignite mine in Germany and a few words about anti-pipeline struggles in the U.S. We experienced some technical difficulties during the Bure interview, so for about 15 minutes there is a buzz. We hope that you will power through and listen carefully through the audio because the information is very interesting. After that time, it clears up and Daniel is far more listenable. Here are a few references Daniel makes, such as the Tarnac Case, the ZAD (our interviews on the ZAD) , Hambach Forest (including interviews by crimethInc and us). The deforestation may happen this autumn, so actions in Bure (which is bristling with police who detain and inspect people). You can find out info in French at https://vmc.camp (most updated) that can be put through a translator or a less-updated English-language version at https://en.vmc.camp or one in German at https://de.vmc.camp that's slightly more updated. And Unicorn Riot did a piece last year contextualizing the ZAD NDDL, Hambach Forest resistance and struggle in Bure. If you'd like to hear an update and call-out about resistance in the Hambach forest by audio comrades from Infolara in Switzerland, check out the link in our shownotes. This audio will be a part of the next edition of B(A)DNews: Angry Voices From Around The World, produced by the International A-Radio Network of Anarchist and Anti-Authoritarian radio and podcast projects, of which we and Infolara are members. B(A)DNews is a monthly, English-language podcast (sometimes with a Spanish-language edition) released in the middle of each month. Stay tuned for that and you can find past episodes at A-Radio-Network.Org Announcements Resisting Neo-Confederates and Nazis in Eastern TN From an IGD post entitled “No Fascists in Appalachia: Call to Oppose League of the South in Tennessee“: "The League of the South (LOS) and other far-Right/neo-Nazi groups are organizing two events in Northeast Tennessee this month. One will target the TriPride march in Johnson City and the other is a gathering in Elizabethton, Tennessee to protest the fall of Silent Sam in Chapel Hill NC." "The LOS is a neo-Confederate hate group known for its flash-rallies brandishing the Confederate battle flag in small towns across the South, and for its extreme violence like in Charlottesville on August 12, 2017 last summer. Their Chief of Staff is Michael Tubbs, a former green beret who went to prison for stealing and stockpiling weapons from the US Military for the KKK, and who was integral to the violence in Charlottesville." TriPride will be held in Johnson City, TN and will march through downtown, starting at 101 Commerce Street. Tennessee LOS coordinator Tom Pierce has called for a protest to happen along the march route. Pierce helped organize a similar protest against a Pride march last June in Knoxville." "We're calling for folx to organize autonomously for this event. The fascists could show up on any part of the march route so be prepared to visibly or physically block them from interfering with the pride march.” Check out the IGD article to see the full, article. Defend Rashid From Transfer The prominent voice featured in last week's episode of The Final Straw, the political prisoner Kevin Rashid Johnson, is being threatened with another punitive transfer because of his organizing and speaking out. There is a hearing on Monday, September 10th in his prison in Virginia, the state in which he was captured before being transferred away. His past transfers have moved him further from his family, have resulted in beatings, medical neglect, threats, starvation other attacks by prison officials and other prisoners. It would be awesome if you, dear listener, could take a moment to call and email tomorrow starting at 9am eastern time to the official in charge of interstate compact: Chief of Corrections Operations David Robinson. We can call the main office number at 804-674-3000 and ask to be transferred to his phone line. Robinson's email address is david.robinson@vadoc.virginia.gov. When leaving a message or talking to Mr Robinson, refer to Rashid by his legal name Kevin Johnson, and give his Virginia prison id # 1007485. Explain that he is better off in Virginia, that he has been subjected to serious human rights abuses during previous transfers. Over ten thousand people have already signed a petition demanding that he be released from solitary and that he not be transferred. Update on Harm Reduction and Food Distribution in Asheville The City of #Asheville just dropped their notice of violation against the 12 Baskets food distribution project out of the Kairos West community center, however is still retaining it's attack on Steady Collective's needle exchange, noloxin distribution and harm reduction program by an unprecedented challenge to Firestorm's hosting of the project via claiming that Firestorm is operating a homeless shelter by hosting Steady Collective. This is idiotic. Distributing harm reduction tools to the public saves lives and providing a space for people to sit, read, access reading materials and the internet does not amount to a shelter. If you haven't heard the issues, check out our August 12th interview with Hill Brown of Steady Collective and keep an eye on their social media presence as well as that of Firestorm. Also, consider a visit to their public event every Tuesday at Firestorm from 1:30 to 4pm. AFTERBUZZ TV – Orange Is The New Black edition, is a weekly “after show” for fans of Netflix's Orange Is The New Black. In this episode hosts Scott Moore, Sterling Cates, and April Whisenhant discuss episodes 5 & 6. ABOUT ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK Orange is the New Black comes from "Weeds" creator Jenji Kohan about a women's prison drama with comedy that takes no prisoners. This episode is the second half of a two-part Susquehanna Permaculture Round Table discussion that took place at my friend Seppi's house on Wednesday, June 3, 2015. Since Charles Eisenstein had to leave after the first recording, this piece features Ben Weiss and Dave Jacke as the panelists, and includes several members of the live home audience joining in to share their thoughts and questions on the topics at hand. With a mixture of humor and honesty we continue talking about how to become right with ourselves and others in order to find and build community, and right livelihood. Be sure and check out the first episode, which includes Charles Eisenstein on the panel, if you haven't heard it already. You can find out more about the panelists from this session at their respective websites. susquehannapc.com for Ben, and edibleforestgardens.com for Dave. If you would like to study with Dave he is teaching a 9 day intensive course on Forest Garden Design from October 2 - 11, 2015 at Feathered Pipe Ranch, near Helena Montana. This is the first time in three years that this course has been offered in the United States. This all inclusive class allows students to learn how to mimic forest ecosystems that include a number of valuable characteristics including stability and resilience. As with the recent interviews with Dave this have expressed, you can also expect this course to explore the human side of design including the social and economic elements. Participants will also have the opportunity to design multiple forest garden, including one for the course site as well as for the 6th Ward Forest Garden Park to be installed in Helena. Find out more about this course at insideedgedesign.com/upcoming-events, or via the link in the show notes. So, I've been resting on any kind of extended commentary about all of this until after the second half, this piece, came out, which included brevity with the ending for the conversation with Penny Livingston-Stark, because all three dealt a great deal with that personal or inner landscape work. My personal work in that direction has lead me to understand more fully my personal niche and role. As much as I may desire to be a certain type of person, as indicated in this conversation, I'm not. At the end of the day I'm your friendly neighborhood podcast host, teacher, and network builder. It's funny how hard it was to come to terms with that, but the more I do so the easier this work is. The three hours or so of material, and conversations held with others in the time since, left me in a place where the answers to the questions at hand lead to more questions and more conversations. Alexis' interest in building community in Reading. My interest in right livelihood and turning the podcast into a full-time career. Ethical purity, and the imagery Charles set forth about being a good person at the end of the the first round table segment. Then two days after this I had a big conversation with Wil and Eli and Jono in-person and we talked about many of the things covered in the last few podcast episodes and what it means to live right with yourself, to be honest, and to make it all work, which in turn moved us towards community. I looked back through the responses to the listener poll I posted a while back, and recurring themes that advertisers are okay by you if that means that I can keep doing this, and that people were looking for more than a podcast to be a part of, but for a larger project. The anger you heard me express at the beginning of this conversation, after years of it being something consuming in my youth, is now a source of creativity and energy. Coming out of this I'm approaching certain individuals within the community searching for appropriate sponsors to turn the podcast into something more. I'm also working with a number of retailers and others in order to add more value for recurring Patreon members. Currently there are 10% discounts available at Field and Forest Products, and PermieKids for folks who join that service at $5 or more per month. But that is just about the show. The more interesting part comes with a different project. One way or another I am building a permaculture center and community that can focus on education and research in a completely legal manner, that in turn become an incubator and model for other such projects, and locate it in an area near other cities and communities where there are ordinances and zoning issues that need to be resolved in order to be created, to solve some of the underlying problems when everything we want to do is illegal and there are structures in place that keep us from living in community with one another. At the moment there is a piece of property in my township that is currently available for purchase that is nearly perfect for this purpose. Over 15 acres with a portion is zoned commercial with several buildings including a house, and the rest is high-density residential. It is near multiple interstates and highways, an international airport, a train depot, and bus station. It is within day-trip distance from Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Balitmore, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and New York City. I am also already involved in local politics as I sit on the Parks and Recreation Board for the township, know many of the gatekeepers, and have been involved in changing ordinances. I've already begun working with my law firm to investigate the possibility, and working with others in the Susquehanna Permaculture community to keep the energy going while I work on some of the nuts and bolts details. I've reached out to The Possibility Alliance and ThePOOSH as a sort of sanity check to see if this is a reasonable thing to do and the feedback they shared was that this is the kind of example site that is needed because it exists where people are. Community leaders from throughout the region can be invited to drop in when it is convenient and see what is happening. Multiple perspectives and thoughts can be shared from the individuals and families working and, in the long term, living onsite. But I can't do this alone and need the broader permaculture community to raise the funds to make this happen. Being me, of course, I want to do it a different way and not run a go-fund me or other electronic crowdfunding campaign. Let's use a low-tech, high-touch approach. If you are in a place to assist with this launch call people you know and tell them you are in support of a project that can help to create the world you want to live in and you are asking the person on the other end of that call if they can give in support of the same. Or write them a letter expressing your desire to see something like this come forth into the world. Give them the The Permaculture Podcast address if they can send something via PayPal, or the mailing address for the show if they want to give by post: The Permaculture Podcast The Permaculture Podcast Spread the word and let people know what's happening, what we are doing here together. Join in the permaculture center and community conversation here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/410645555797232/ If you have any questions about this call: or email: The Permaculture Podcast. From here I'll be a guest instructor at Jude Hobb's Teacher Training, in cooperation with Beyond Organic Design, the evening of Sunday June 28, 2015, at the Commons in Brooklyn. I believe that evening is open to the public so if you are in the area and want to stop by my lecture is from 730pm to 9pm. More information about that is at beyondorganicdesign.org. August 20 - 23 I'll be at Radicle Gathering in Bowling Green, Kentucky, running a Permaculture question and answer session on Friday afternoon, a community vision workshop on Saturday morning, and delivering the Saturday night keynote address. Eric Puro of ThePOOSH will also be there as the Friday night Keynote speaker. If you are in the area come out and join in the fun of workshops, live music, and a whole bunch of people coming together to explore how to build resilient communities. radiclegathering.org. September 12, 2015 I'll be at the RiversideProject recording a live permaculture round table. September 18 I'm looking to return to the Mother Earth News Fair in Seven Springs, Pennsylvania to check out this year's event. More details on those two as I get closer to those events. I am also in touch with the organizers of the Urban Permaculture Conference, being held in NY, NY from October 23-25 about covering and presenting at the event. If you are an organizer who would like me to come cover or speak at your event, drop me a line through the usual means. Until the next time take care of earth, your self, and each other.
