This week's Misfit Entrepreneur is Derek Lidow. Derek has had a unique entrepreneurial journey in that he was CEO of a large publicly traded semiconductor company, a founder and CEO of an innovative and valuable startup, and now as a teacher and scholar of entrepreneurship and innovation. Derek is a professor of the practice at the Keller Center for Innovation in Engineering Education at Princeton University. He's literally lived 3 very different entrepreneurial lives. On top of all that he is the author multiple best-sellers including Startup Leadership: How Savvy Entrepreneurs Turn Their Ideas Into Successful Enterprises, Building on Bedrock: What Sam Walton, Walt Disney, and Other Great Self-Made Entrepreneurs Can Teach Us About Building Valuable Companies, and THE ENTREPRENEURS: The Relentless Quest for Value. Derek is one of those guys, I could talk about every side of entrepreneurship with and we do just that. www.DerekLidow.com Derek thought he was going to be a scientist. During graduate school he found that it wasn't for him. He finished his PhD, but then shocked everyone and went into the business world. He found success as a semi-conductor executive during the golden age of the industry. He contributed a lot to the industry and ultimately proved how to create great solutions saving the world billions in gigawatts in the power space. He was ultimately made CEO of a large global company and led it to be the leader in it's vertical. After 5 years, he got the itch to start his own company. He retired from the corporate world and started a company from scratch. He built a data aggregation and visualization solution for the supply chain and with his previous experience was able to create a massive enterprise. The company kept finding success until a another company came along and had to buy them paying top dollar. Two weeks later he later he was recruited by Princeton to help create their entrepreneurial curriculum and teach. For the last 10 years he has taught and immersed himself into studying entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship is more of innate state for human beings, but so many stray from embracing it – why do you think that is? Derek has studied the origins of entrepreneurship and how it started and took hold. He realized he was under-appreciating the value of entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurs are responsible for virtually everything. We should understand better what they do and how they do that. At the 14 min mark, Derek and I have a good discussion of whether everyone is meant to be an entrepreneur or not. Entrepreneurs are self-directed. They decide which rules to follow and which to not follow. Entrepreneurs typically have a skill that those around them covet and want them for. Entrepreneurs entice others to give them something in return for their skill. They are not afraid to ask for a sale. We further discuss how everyone is selling something, but don't see it like selling unless it is in a business context. But, everyone is in sales of some kind. We also discuss the real challenge for people tapping into the entrepreneurial gene is the willingness to take risk. You've said that we are focused on the wrong aspect of helping and regulating entrepreneurs. What does that mean? It is impossible for Govts to create effective regulations that allow entrepreneurs to innovate and create without causing entrepreneurs to go outside the rules and cause problems. Regulations have not been very effective as a whole as entrepreneurs find ways to maneuver around them if they are harmful. Entrepreneurs themselves are far more effective at regulating other entrepreneurs. At the 24 min mark, we talk about the FTX scandal and how entrepreneurs would be better to manage it than Govt. Derek uses an example of Vanderbilt to illustrate how entrepreneurs are better at keeping things in check with each other. From your study or entrepreneurs and the history of entrepreneurship, what are some of the lessons you've taken that people should know and understand? Great entrepreneurs are great at enticing people to want things that we may not really need. People need to get educated from a consumer standpoint on how they are persuaded. This will help entrepreneurs better create products and services that are more valuable. What is your most important message from your latest book, the Relentless Quest for Value? Pay more attention to entrepreneurs and respect them but help them by giving them better feedback to create more effective solutions. Support smaller businesses and their entrepreneur journey. Understand that entrepreneurs are best equipped to solve the world's biggest challenges. You dedicated the book to Arel and Tiel. Who are they? Derek's sons that are both entrepreneurs. One son is in Silicon Valley, the other growing slow and steady in his business. They are modeling creating great businesses with integrity. 2-3 of the best lessons you personally learned on your own entrepreneur journey? Know yourself so you can understand what you are capable of and where to ask for help. You must put yourself in the shoes of your customers and dedicate yourself to their happiness. Be selfishly selfless. It is ok, to be selfish to be selfless with those around you.   Best Quote: Know yourself so you can understand what you are capable of and where to ask for help.   Derek's Misfit 3: Feel good about asking for help. Empathize with others. It is ok to be selfish to be selfless in helping others around you. In this episode, we speak with Alon Gilady. He is a serial entrepreneur who is currently leading Renovai - his third technology startup. He co-founded his first startup while studying for his BA in economics and philosophy. That venture was in the sports and entertainment collectibles industry. He was able to close licensing deals with brands such as FC Barcelona, NBA, and Disney, selling over 1.5M units through retailers in Europe and the USA such as Walmart, Target, Toys R Us, Tesco, and more. In 2017 he co-founded a 3D-rendering studio with ten employees. The company created virtual reality experiences for architects and interior designers. Based on the knowledge and experience gained in this venture, the idea of Renovai was born with an ambitious mission: to empower online retailers with AI to make professional design and stylist services affordable and accessible for all. We discuss: • His “impossible is nothing” mindset, and how he was able to “skip the line” and close deals with some of the world's leading sports brands and retailers, with zero experience. • His approach to achieving moonshot goals • The power of persistence • Where luck plays in • Pro tips for cold outreach • And much more! Joe Rojas is a reminder, a testament, to the power, the will, the drive of humanity. Despite the adversity of having no home, he, quite literally, defined what home meant to him. In his quest to do so, he’s inspired hundreds of people, and transformed so many businesses along the way. If you take away anything today, take away this: mindset is everything. Joe’s worked from everything to being a bouncer to now an entrepreneur - and “sucked at business” before flourishing, in a wild ride of a life. Joe has an unbelievable story from a homeless dumpster diver as a kid who left school in the 6th grade to becoming a transformational leader. Today we talk about everything from being homeless to creating the definition of home for yourself - to unpacking the essence of becoming an unshakeable author of your life. We hear how Laura turned a difficult experience into a powerful lesson about the importance of equity. Laura explains how reopening the investigation into her sexual assault created positive change not only for her but for countless other women. QUOTES “That path just wasn't going to happen for me. "My biggest recommendation is to just start" - Bryan Spunt on how to succeed as an entrepreneurI am thrilled to bring you today's episode with Bryan Spunt who is the CEO of Seek Discomfort, the Chief Smile Officer at the Big Smiles Program, and the third Shareholder at PopSockets. Seek Discomfort is a brand created by Yes Theory. For those of you who don't know, Yes Theory is a YouTube channel with over 7 Million subscribers started by three young guys (Thomas, Matt, and Ammar) who believe that life's greatest moments live outside of your comfort zone. Their goal is to help people get out of their comfort zone by saying yes to opportunity. Bryan is the CEO of their brand Seek Discomfort which is an amazing clothing company creating a tangible calling card to push your boundaries, overcome fear, and live a more vibrant life. Bryan and I met on the beach last summer in Santa Monica when some of my best friends and I spontaneously drove to LA to meet the guys at Yes Theory. We exchanged info and a month later we sat down to record this conversation. In this episode Bryan dives into his come-up story, how he found a love for business in high school, how he became the third shareholder in PopSockets as a Sophomore in college, and how he eventually found his current position as CEO of Seek Discomfort. We specifically discuss:How to succeed as an entrepreneurWhat skills do good entrepreneurs need? How can I become a successful entrepreneur? The importance of giving backLiving in the moment rather than the futureHow to find a career that combines passion, money, and purposeIs going to college actually worth it?Is going to college a waste of time?I am thrilled to share this episode with all of you! Since our conversation nine months ago,  I connected Bryan with SeaTrees, a California based non-profit that I am the Youth Ambassador for, to establish a partnership with Seek Discomfort, through their Seeker Sustainability Program, so that Seek could become an OceanPositive company. OceanPositive is a term given to a company when they partner with SeaTrees. The certification is given when a company calculates their environmental footprint, then wipes it out through planting mangrove trees and reforesting kelp, then changes their practices so they aren't continuing their same ways of production and distribution that led to emissions. So as of NOW, every time you purchase Seek Discomfort, you are also planting mangrove trees and reforesting kelp. Are you someone who is thinking about launching a business, but are worried about the complexities of doing so as an expatriate? This week's episode is the perfect one to listen to.  Just as I help people through times of transition, so does Augustin Bonniol, CEO of ABC Expat — though the kind of help we offer is very different! As a "trailing spouse," Augustin did what many accompanying partners do: he handled all the "life" arrangements in the new country. Housing, work permit, car, banking — when you build a life in a new country, the beginning can be complicated and quite stressful! Especially when you're confronted with a new system, a new culture, perhaps even a new language. He saw the opportunity and turned these logistical challenges into a business — ABC Expat.  How did he make the leap from "trailing spouse" to successful entrepreneur? Well, for one thing, he ignored the nay-sayers and critics and listened instead to his own heart. Join me to hear this amazing story, then let's work together to create YOUR amazing story! On this episode, Liz and Amanda are talking with Hitha Papelu about her multi-hyphenate endeavors as a writer, entrepreneur, speaker, CEO, mom, and more. Following a career-defining year, Hitha reflects on her greatest accomplishments and offers a transparent look at areas of growth that she plans to work on in the new year. Hitha shares about her new book and how she manages her multiple entrepreneurial roles – and motherhood! Liz, Amanda, and Hitha talk about goal-setting, morning rituals,  the importance of technology breaks, and her favorite mom hacks.   IN THIS EPISODE: [00:01] Hitha Papelu Introduced [02:50] Talking about her new book [04:30] Balancing career and personal life [07:57] Mixing family and work [12:17] Goal Check [17:18] How motherhood changes you [21:21] Hitha's greatest accomplishment [24:00] Thoughts on being an influencer [28:27] Hitha's signature style [32:53] What have you done for you lately? [37:49] Latest obsessions [41:29] Mom hack KEY TAKEAWAYS: How do you do it all? You don't. The only way you do it all is you don't do it all at the same time. Prioritize one to two things you could do very well and let a lot of the other stuff go. Everyone has goals. How you choose to pursue them is on you. So often women minimize their goals and dreams. Bring the people in your life – who want to support you – along on the journey as you pursue your goals. Ask for help or tell them what you want to do and let them offer help.  Life is short and your style is going to change. Never stop rediscovering your style and what you want to wear. Stop diminishing art that is created by women for women, or let it be treated as less than. Not all women's stories have to be tortured or a struggle. Let's celebrate women's happiness, too. Mom hack: Ask your kids what snack they want the night before, put it on a sticky note as a reminder to you and accountability to you kids. And set the table for breakfast the night before to save yourself time. Hitha's challenge: Get offline this holiday season and figure out who you are. Reacquaint yourself with how you define yourself and how you want to be defined. Create micro rituals for your morning and start the day off doing something for yourself – like reading a book, meditation, or yoga.  BIO: HITHA BIO:  Hitha is a consummate multi-hypenate - an entrepreneur, investor, writer, and speaker.  As CEO of Rhoshan Pharmaceuticals, she oversees financing, partnerships, and strategy for the company. In this inspiring talk between two Entrepreneurial Minded Moms, Aimee Cruz, interviews, Kelly Schaefer. Kelly is a Mom of 4 – was a registered nurse and left nursing in 2010 after a long career to follow her own path of leading a Personal Services agency and helping others start their own “errands” businesses. They discuss things such as: • Side hustle or go all in? When to take the leap. • Tips for moving from the Technician in the business to the CEO and Leader of the business. • What it is like becoming a parent at the age of 16 and then waiting 11 years to continue to grow your family. • How to get a Personal Services business – or really any business – off the ground. Kelly transformed her life out of corporate America and into being a business owner and entrepreneur. Kelly knew she had a skill that was being able to take care of others. She started a business in her local town running errands for busy people and seniors in her local community. It gave her a way to never have to work weekends or holidays ever again. Her business grew from just her – to a team of 8 employees and she has generated over a million dollars “running errands” since 2010. Her success then took her onto another path, she wrote a book in 2017 and has been helping other women (mostly moms) start businesses doing the exact same thing in their own towns/cities.https://theconciergeacademy.com/https://www.momsonmaternity.com/ Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Ryan Reeves 0:20 Hello, everyone, and welcome to the investing city podcast where the goal is to get better at investing business and life. Thank you so much for taking the time to join us. It really means a lot. Without further ado, enjoy this episode. Ryan Reeves 0:41 Today's episode of the investing city podcast, we're happy to host Mike Kehoe, Mike is the CEO of Kehoe investments, a holdings company with various businesses under its umbrella. And he's been a serial entrepreneur in his life. So, he's been in everything from fitness clubs, to mattress retailing, to software to insurance, just so many different things. So, he has a wealth of business knowledge that we're eager to tap into today. So, in this conversation, we talked about how to sell, how to take the leap to be an entrepreneur, how to actually grow a business and much, much more. So, I hope you get as much out of this one as I did, because Mike is a wealth of business knowledge, as I said, so enjoy this one. So why don't we start with a little bit of your background, and maybe when you were first interested in business? Mike Kehoe 1:39 Well, for me, Ryan, it would probably go back to really childhood years growing up with a dad who was constantly buying different little businesses. My dad was an incredible entrepreneur at finding businesses that he could invest small amounts of money and, and get them started and get them up and running. So, I watched him buy restaurants, insurance companies, appraisal companies, different things. Unfortunately, never had a huge amount of success with the operations side. But he was great at starting things. So, for me, I always had an interest in this just not until later in life that an opportunity presented itself. Ryan Reeves 2:18 So, it sounds like you had a real kind of bias for action. Do you think that was something that really influenced you? Mike Kehoe 2:26 I do think it had a big influence on me. Because today I'm very much a business person of action. Frankly, sometimes, sometimes I'm guilty of that. Fire, Ready, aim, I'll jump into things. I'll jump into things a little too quickly sometimes. And that can be that can be a challenge, too. Ryan Reeves 2:49 So, what was the first business that you actually started? Mike Kehoe 2:54 Well, I did a lot of different things early on in life from my running my own little paper route to selling, selling things that I could find that worked in the neighborhoods that I was in like popsicles and greeting cards and things like that. But I didn't really get into a real business until I was about 30 years old. My current path took me to college and employment with United Parcel Service and rising up the ranks there. And then I left United Parcel Service and went to work for Prudential securities is stockbroker, which was a little bit like, what you do more of a retail broker. And for me, it was another great eye opener because I learned so much about many different businesses, because as you know, Ryan, you just have to study all day long learning different companies, what they do well, what they don't do well. So, one of the lessons that I picked...
