In this episode, we are bringing you the second installment in our Voices of Fort Kent series, an interview with Patrick Lacroix, the director of the Acadian Archives at UMFK. We relished the opportunity to get to know our new colleague at the university's northernmost campus. Patrick's professional and personal history is impressive and, however reluctant he was to talk about himself, it is abundantly clear that he is dedicated to the preservation and proliferation of the history of the St. John Valley. During our conversation, Patrick gave us the broad strokes of his professional life, including some compelling context for our journey to Maine's borderlands and the history of Franco-Americans and Acadians in New England. Merci et très bonne écoute ! Welcome to this month's episode of Franco-American Pathways, the second in our Mapping Franco Lewiston series. If you haven't heard part one, we suggest going back and giving it a listen. It'll give you some context for this month's conversations. In part one, we focused on connecting the physical and cultural topographies of Lewiston in order to better understand its history; we visited Libby Bischof at the Osher Map Library to look at several different renderings of Lewiston-Auburn throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, and then spent a day on foot together in Lewiston to deepen our understanding of the Franco presence there. For this second part, we rounded out our exploration of Franco Lewiston talking with James Myall, co-author of The Franco-Americans of Lewiston-Auburn, historian, and policy analyst for the Maine Center for Economic Policy. Be sure to check out our blog to take a look at the resources mentioned and stay up to date on all our news. Introducing Franco-American Pathways (Chemins Franco-Américains), a podcast that uses resources available at the University of Southern Maine's Franco-American Collection to celebrate Franco history, culture, and stories. In this pilot episode, we talk about the work being done at collections like ours to preserve and protect oral histories and artifacts that document the Franco experience. We talk a bit about the history of the Francos in Maine and New England, interview members of the Franco community, and give you a sample of one of our many oral histories. We hope that our collection will not only be a resource for the academic community, but also a means for Maine's Franco-Americans to connect with their heritage, and with each other. Please reach out via our website to see photos of the materials discussed in today's episode, connect about visiting the collection, or just to say “hi” and share your thoughts. We are pleased to be joined by Author David Vermette for this episode. David's 2018 Book, 'A Distinct Alien Race: The Untold Story of Franco-Americans' fills a significant need in telling the ethnic, labor and immigrant story of the more than 1 million Franco-Americans who immigrated to the US in the 19th and 20th centuries and their more than 10 million US descendants, 2 million in New England alone. Read more from David Vermette This is a truly special episode for M the Media Project founder and AWHY host Scott M. Graves, himself of French-Canadian extraction. Read Scott M. Graves homage to the french-canadian women of his family. David explained the immigration story of the Franco-Americans, who began to flood into New England mill-towns at the behest of mill owners after the US Civil War. Our conversation tied the challenges and the resiliency inherent in the Franco-American story to the greater story of labor in the United States and how many of the tenants of an earlier time have had consequences on the patterns of development in the Unites States up to the present era. David will be speaking May 6, 2021 at the University of Maine Orono. Particularly poignant was our discussion of what our own witness to the ‘Great American Experiment in Suburbia' meant to us personally, the change in language and customs, the gains in education and yet the dislocation of leaving little Canada for parts unknown. Whether Franco-American yourself or not, you owe yourself the time to read David's book for its universally North American story of resiliency, pride, industrial history… the story of us all. In the first segment, Host Tiokasin Ghosthorse speaks with returning guest Darryl Leroux. Darryl is associate professor in the Department of Social Justice and Community Studies at Saint Mary’s University in Kjipuktuk (Halifax, Nova Scotia). His book, "Distorted Descent: White Claims to Indigenous Identity," explores the many efforts made by white Americans and Canadians to claim an “Indigenous”identity. He and Tiokasin discuss Darryl’s most recent research demonstrating how Franco-Americans with no Abenaki ancestry have created a series of "Abenaki tribes" in Vermont and New Hampshire. At the bottom of the hour, Tiokasin pays tribute to great friend and colleague Laura Waterman Wittstock (Seneca, Heron Clan) who recently passed away at the age of 83. Laura, a long time and extremely well regarded Native journalist, was the host and producer of "First Person Radio" on public/community radio KFAI FM in Minneapolis, MN for many years. She was also an educator and founder of the non-profit Migizi Communications in Minneapolis - giving opportunities and encouragement to young Native communicators. Over the years, Laura joined Tiokasin as a guest on “First Voices Radio” and Tiokasin also joined Laura on her show. "First Voices Radio" will miss her very much.In the second segment, Tiokasin welcomes back Max Wilbert, a writer, organizer and wilderness guide. A third-generation dissident, Max grew up on Duwamish land in post–WTO Seattle. He is the author of two books, including the forthcoming “Bright Green Lies: How the Environmental Movement Lost Its Way and What We Can Do About It,” to be published by Monkfish this year. Max’s essays have been published in Earth Island Journal, Counterpunch and Dissident Voice, and have been translated into several languages. Max has been part of grassroots political work for nearly 20 years. He has been involved in fighting both Canadian and Utah tar sands, in resisting industrial-scale water extraction and deforestation in Nevada, in advocating for the last remaining wild buffalo in Yellowstone, in solidarity work with Indigenous communities in British Columbia, and in campaigns against sexual violence. Last Friday, a group of activists, including Max, launched an occupation of a proposed mine in northern Nevada. This week we have Patrick Lacroix on to talk about Quebec in the 1840’s and what caused people to leave, including agricultural and non-agricultural reasons for immigration. Martha Pellerin was a musician, scholar, advocate, educator and song collector—to name just a few of her many roles. Her family immigrated to Vermont from the Eastern Townships of Quebec in the 1960s, settling in Barre. Growing up, Martha navigated a complicated landscape of culture and identity. While her family spoke French at home and maintained strong ties to Quebec, Martha also spent much of her life immersed in American culture and the English language. Ultimately she found her calling, unifying these dual elements of herself and proudly identifying as a Franco-American. Martha worked her whole adult life to understand the nuances therein, to draw out, document and sustain the stories, songs and traditions of her family and community and to help others do the same. She was committed to “progressing the culture” of Franco-Americans in Vermont and beyond. Martha died of cancer in 1998 at 37 years old - much too soon. In this episode we hear recordings of Martha from the VFC archives as well as interviews with her son, Ian Drury, and with Burlington-based musician Michele Choiniere, one of many Franco-American Vermonters whose life was touched by Martha.
