What do all high-impact, disruptive—and sustainable—K-12 programs have in common? In this episode of The TechEd Podcast, host Matt Kirchner sits down with Dr. Annalies Corbin, founder and CEO of the PAST Foundation and author of Hacking School: Five Strategies to Link Learning to Life. With more than 25 years of experience transforming how students learn, Dr. Corbin offers a bold, research-backed framework for schools to break away from obsolete models and embrace learning that's applied, relevant, and enduring. From student agency to transdisciplinary teaching, she unpacks five core strategies that successful, long-lasting innovative programs share. Along the way, she shares lessons from 275 episodes of her own podcast, Learning Unboxed, and reflects on what too many students—and educators—are missing. If you've ever asked, “How do we fix education?” this episode answers: by rebuilding it for the real world.Listen to learn:Why our education system isn't broken—it's just built for a world that no longer existsWhat employers say young professionals are missing (and why it's not technical skills)How education research and funding models are holding back real innovationThe five core strategies every long-lasting, high-impact program has in commonWhat 275+ conversations with education disruptors reveal about the future of learning3 Big Takeaways from this Episode:1. The education system isn't broken—it's outdated: It still functions exactly as it was designed 100 years ago, prioritizing compliance over relevance. Dr. Corbin argues that instead of adding “federal band-aids,” we need a complete redesign from the ground up.2. Young professionals are graduating without real-world readiness: Employers report that new hires can pass exams but struggle to collaborate, ask questions, or admit what they don't know. These missing skills are costing companies time, productivity, and mentorship bandwidth.3. The best programs that last 10+ years all share five traits: Dr. Corbin identified five essentials: student agency, culturally relevant education, mastery learning, transdisciplinary teaching, and problem-based learning. When schools commit to all five, students experience learning that connects directly to real life and future careers.Resources in this Episode:Get the book Hacking School: Five Strategies to Link Learning to LifeLearn more about the PAST FoundationListen to Learning UnboxedConnect with Annalies on Social Media:Instagram | LinkedInWe want to hear from you! * The conversation in this episode is focused on gender. We both acknowledge that gender identity exists on a spectrum but will be discussing gender specifically as the socialized binary of male and female. This conversation explores the challenges and dynamics of gender roles and expectations in outdoor education. Dr. Steve Sassaman shares personal experiences and insights on how societal norms influence behavior in outdoor settings, the importance of role modeling, and the need for inclusivity in outdoor programs. The discussion highlights the shifting dynamics in participation and leadership roles, particularly among women, and emphasizes the importance of addressing privilege and identity in creating a more equitable outdoor experience. In this conversation, Phil and Steve explore the complexities of masculinity in outdoor education, the importance of redefining challenges to increase accessibility, and the need for intentional programming that prioritizes mental health and community building. They emphasize the value of critique and continuous learning in teaching, advocating for a humble approach that fosters trust and genuine connections with students. Challenging gender roles is crucial in outdoor education. Personal experiences shape our understanding of gender dynamics. Intentionality in shaping outdoor experiences can challenge norms. Masculinity can be expressed positively without dominance. Role modeling is essential for fostering inclusivity. Privilege can be used to empower marginalized voices. Inclusivity in outdoor spaces benefits everyone. Gender diversity is increasing in outdoor programs. We must address safety concerns for all participants. Creating true inclusion requires ongoing dialogue and reflection. Ego and socialized norms around masculinity are pervasive in outdoor education. Redefining challenges can increase accessibility for all participants. Intentional programming should prioritize mental health and community building. Saying 'no' can be just as impactful as pushing through challenges. Critique is essential for growth and improvement in outdoor education. Building trust requires humility and a willingness to learn from students. The history of outdoor education often overlooks contributions from women and people of color. Creating space for critical thought enhances the learning experience. Outdoor educators should focus on human skills alongside technical skills. Continuous learning is vital for educators to remain effective and relatable. The use of simulation in nursing education has been growing in recent years not only because of its proven effectiveness as a training method, but because of limits on clinical training placements, and a dearth of nursing faculty. Today on Raise the Line, we're happy to welcome one of the pioneers in this area, Dr. Pamela Jeffries, the Dean of the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing which is consistently ranked among the top graduate nursing schools in the US. “Now that we've moved to competency-based education and outcomes, I feel simulation is one of the mechanisms that's going to help faculty to see our students demonstrate those competencies needed across domains,” Jeffries tells host Maria Pfrommer, director of Nursing Education at Osmosis from Elsevier. Dr. Jeffries is also known for her work improving the online learning landscape in nursing education. “Online learning is so important in nursing because if you look at our students, they're typically working part-time or even full-time and need that flexibility.” Maria and Dr. Jeffries also get into the details of Vanderbilt's graduate nursing programs and discuss the game changing potential of AI in nursing education and practice in this informative episode.Mentioned in this episode:Vanderbilt University School of Nursing

Are you ready for a double expresso with Dr. Robert Sternberg? In the first expresso of the Fueling Creativity in Education Podcast, hosts Dr. Matthew Worwood and Dr. Cyndi Burnett speak with world-renowned psychologist Dr. Robert Sternberg to explore his research and theories on creativity. Sternberg delves into his pioneering work with the Rainbow Project at Yale, which demonstrated that adding creativity and practical intelligence tests to traditional analytical intelligence measures could better predict college success and reduce group differences. Despite successful results, Sternberg faced the challenge of sustaining funding when his findings contradicted the narrow focus of his sponsors, prompting him to shift to academic administration. He eventually implemented his ideas at Tufts University through the Kaleidoscope Project, emphasizing the importance of persistence, self-belief, and overcoming obstacles in the journey of creativity. The episode also dives deep into Sternberg's theories on intelligence and creativity, including his definition of intelligence as adaptability and his "investment theory" of creativity. He underscores the need to defy societal pressures and personal biases to foster true innovation, sharing anecdotes from his own academic and professional experiences. Sternberg highlights the invaluable role of passion in learning, the benefits of a broad education, and the importance of balancing creative and practical intelligence. The conversation touches on the challenges educators face in engaging students and remaining open to new teaching methods, offering advice on overcoming institutional constraints. Stay tuned for Part 2, where Sternberg will discuss his latest theory on creativity and the future state of creativity in education. About Dr. Robert Sternberg: Dr. Robert J.
