Fred Rutman was experiencing sudden black outs, and literally falling over where he stood. He would awake with bruises, scrapes and confusion, and no one could figure out what was going on. It was the summer of 2009 and these episodes would continue to baffle doctors until finally Fred was brought into hospital to have a digital device and camera attached to him, so that the medical team could actually catch one of these blackouts as they happened. The is a medical trauma story like no other, as Fred takes us through the events leading up to his diagnosis, the journey through adversity, and the resilience he would need over the coming years.  Have you heard of intermittent fasting? It's the practice of switching between fasting and eating on a regular schedule. While most people think of it in terms of the physical effects, it can also positively impact your mental health. In this episode of From Survivor to Thriver, we sat down with Fred Rutman who has died and come back to life numerous times. This brought serious physical and mental health challenges for him but he found healing through intermittent fasting. Fred Rutman known as “Repeatedly Dead Fred”, has had 11 heart procedures in 11 years, been clinically dead dozens of times, suffered dozens of concussions, PTSD, Post-concussion syndrome, brain trauma, defective pacemakers, and botched surgeries. To put the icing on the cake, you can throw in multiple incidences of cognitive medical bias and misdiagnoses.  Through it all, his faith and belief/practice of Judaism was rocked to the core. He also discovered the most powerful prophylactic medicinal tool we have - Intermittent Fasting. If we are supposed to make lemonade out of life's lemons, then he is making the best lemonade ever produced. In today's episode we cover: Fred's health journeyThe Lazarus EffectHow social anxiety impacted his lifeThe cost of men not speaking up about mental health issuesThe problem with our education systemsWhy learning something new helps with brain trauma The power of intermittent fastingHow it helps your body healThe importance of mindful eatingHow Fred's mental health has improvedWe hope you enjoyed our conversation with Fred. TwoSistas and it's WealthWellnessWednesday, September 7, 2022, with Fred Rutman. Fred first and foremost, is a survivor. He has a genuine flair for taking a critical point in his life and turning it around to inspire others. He swears by intermittent fasting!! Fred recalls the summer of 2009. You see; he is a bit of a medical mystery and in many terms, everything he has been through, he shouldn't be here - but we are so happy he is! He had a very unusual medical misadventure that caused him to be clinically dead, 20 times. (It's difficult to put into words and describe what Fred has gone through.) Literally, by all accounts, he was “repeatedly dead.” (A cat has (9) lives; Fred, well technically . . . ) Now, please do not misunderstand. As Fred further described in great detail, with everything he has been through, he still has a sense of humor (you just have to listen to the podcast!) He has a wit about him as he chuckled at his email address which a friend of his said he should use, and of course, he does: repeatedly.dead.fred@gmail.com - Fred was “zoning” out and would have these episodes of falling and hitting his head. The medical doctors thought he was having a heart attack but as it turned out, after 20 clinically dead episodes and the medical community finally ruling out he was having a heart attack, he has diagnosed with a “full heart block” which is where your heart just stops therefore leading to a loss of circulation of blood, falling and being rushed to the hospital. As a result of his condition, he has a pacemaker. As a further result of his medical mystery and from all of the concussions he received and before he was officially diagnosed, he continues to suffer from PTSD, and brain trauma. Fred came across a supportive Facebook group of intermittent fasting and became a coach and coaches others to learn the benefits and live by intermittent fasting. In his words, there is nothing like intermittent fasting. Once he began fasting, within (6) months, Fred no longer needed his insulin! Medical mystery or not, Fred is NOT dead; he certainly was (20 times to be exact) but he is moving forward with his life and inspiring others to do the same! Thank you so much Fred! We're all going to die someday. It's this lesson of impermanence that none of us will escape. But imagine dying more than once....in one summer. And imagine that the medical experts you're relying on don't really seem to know what is happening with you, and you're not even sure they're actually listening. In comes Fred Rutman, a regular hockey-loving Canadaian man. An economics professor just living his life. And that is exactly what happened to him. Listen in on what he experienced, how he advocated for himself, how he recovered fully after one doctor literally threw a book at him--one that saved his life. Fred shares how he came to learn about and practice Intermittent Fasting--not to lose weight, but to recover from major cardiac events--and how this practice has not only led to full recover, but he's a better man with a better life. And he's helping others do the same. You bet your life, you won't want to miss this conversation. Often.  Especially in the beginning. However, I promise you, it can always be worse.I can also promise you that if you remain open to learning from your mistakes, you'll make them less often. But how can we do learn from our mistakes? In this episode, you'll hear from Fred Rutman, a former professor who is now unwillingly retired, and who has died, literally, dozens of times.  Fred will be your reminder that shit happens and that it can always be worse.  Fred will talk about his leadership journey and how his personal life experiences have shaped how he chooses to lead.Trench Leadership: A Podcast From the Front is humbled to have been listed in the Top 20 for Best Canadian Leadership-themed podcasts in 2021.Reviews are the best way for us to know what we are doing right, what we are doing wrong, and what we should talk about in the future, so please click on the links below and let us know if this episode was helpful.Connect Here:Trench Leadership Web-site: www.trenchleadership.caLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/trench-leadership-a-podcast-from-the-front/?viewAsMember=trueFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/Trench-Leadership-A-Podcast-from-the-Front-10027091202630Instagram: trench_leadershipYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ3DKPuh_ipqJqyeR0vv46QTwitter: @TrenchLeadersh1Iglen Studios: https://www.iglen.comConcussion Legacy Foundation web-site: https://www.concussionfoundation.caDispatches Adventure Ride web-site: https://www.dispatchesride.com

Fred Rutman, BA, CACE, MBA, Certified Marketing Specialist Intermittent Faster and Coach, Death and Brain Trauma Survivor Currently writing the medical trauma memoir "The Summer I Died Twenty Times" Currently living in Toronto. I was a marketing person and college prof (MBA, Marketing and Finance) for a number of years, until the summer of 2009 came crashing down on me and forced me onto permanent medical leave. Something was causing me to what we thought was pass out randomly, but it was worse than that - It turns out my heart was stopping. I was clinically dead dozens of times. Each time my heart stopped, I collapsed and hit my head, sustaining multiple concussions. They eventually figured out that they had repeatedly misdiagnosed me and put me on a pacemaker. Which was great. Until the infallible pacemaker failed in 2013. And 2018, with more complications in 2019 and 2020.  In 2018, I learned about intermittent fasting and my life hasn't been the same since. I attribute the large majority of my recovery to the healing powers of IF. I've reversed T2 diabetes and some of its related issues, and am no longer asthmatic and my sleep apnea went away. I'm down 10 pant sizes and about 80 lbs. Yes, there is still some perpetual anxiety, PTSD and Post Concussion Syndrome but it gets better every day. In mid-December 2021, I had the cleanest pacemaker check I've ever had.  So the last 12 years has been me fighting to get my life back. Additionally, I am writing my memoir “The Summer I Died Twenty Times”. My guest, Fred Rutman, started intermittent fasting after several health scares to heal his body. The research he had found dealt with metabolic syndrome or insulin resistance, which is when you have too much insulin floating in your system. Once that gets out of whack, so many of your other hormones get out of whack, including your leptin and your ghrelin, which is your satiety and hunger signals, your estrogen, your testosterone, your adrenaline,  your growth hormones, and more. It's a domino effect. When you begin fasting, you give your digestive system a chance to calm down and get rid of some inflammation, which leads to a lot of your other hormones falling into place. He has seen people who IF get rid of their thyroid problems, get rid of their type two diabetes, get rid of sleep apnea, get rid of asthma, and the list goes on and on and on. We discuss the basics of intermittent fasting and how it can be implemented in most anyone's life. You can follow Fred here: https://www.instagram.com/repeatedlydf/Don't forget to use the coupon code MEGHAN15 for 15% off their wellness shots. https://dosedaily.co/Support the show
