The winding and interconnected story of Mark Michel, Musto jackets, Soulhub, Drake Passage, Antartica, and icebergs.Carmen Rendell reminisces on the stories shared across continents and, now over a decade ago. Some stories should be shared further, and this is one of them. Not just because it highlights the change in our climate, or the remarkable work of Mark and the team in Antartica recording the sounds and images of the icebergs, but because of how the story is told by Mark, and how their experience and his talent transcends the air waves.I wonder at what point we became so estranged from our relationship with this Earth. You're instantly transported to Australis, their vessel, and on the boat with Mark and the team. Antarctica is a place not meant for humankind. colourful and often tragic history reflects this. It is not that we are unwelcome here, more that we are not, perhaps, natural. In simple terms, it a beautiful tale, including how Carmen and Mark connected across the oceans, and still having yet to meet, brings you on board to relive how these Lincoln, Yoko and Ernest icebergs and their micro-environments end up projected onto the Auckland Museum. Please do share and let us know what you felt as you listen to Mark's story. We'd love to know what it evokes in you. Carmen Rendell recorded a short back story ahead of her conversation with painter Sue Rapley, as their connection through Soulhub goes back to our Soulhub Journal No 3, and the web of unfolding felt worthy of good air time. It shows the magic of Soulhub and the beauty of serendipitous moments in not just Carmen and Sue's life but all those touched by her artwork, the journal and Soulhub. And these are just the ones we know about. Our entwining story, leads us up to the present day, as we create our Soulful Meadows Painting Retreat this May (17-18 May 2025). What's missing in the story is Sue's raison d'etre. What led her to paint? What does she experience as she goes through her process, and for someone who spend decades estranged from her passion, how did she find her way back to it. It's a surprise story that took her back to art college, more than 30 years ago, and a squiggly path of many industries before she re-found the paintbrush. A supportive husband Dave, and a mentor who arrives just as the student was ready, meant that Sue's love of the sea and desire to sit with her thoughts and creativity, finally found the space and canvas to be explored. It's finding how you can create something that has real meaning and that's actually really coming from your heart and from your soul, really. We hope you enjoy both spectrums, the introduction and then our podcast together. For more information on Sue and her work, please do check out her website and instagram. We go a little off the UK track, as we responded to the signs in front of us. Through our dear friend and Dance Al Fresco DJ Youssef Boutayeb, we were led to the work of CADFA, Camden Abu Dis Friendship Association led by Human Rights lawyer Nandita Dowson. Youssef is a super connector, who works deeply in his local borough, bridging many worlds across music, cultures and communities. CADFA works in the UK to promote awareness about the human rights situation in Palestine. Starting in 2003 when people from the London borough of Camden made links with people in Abu Dis a town in the Jerusalem suburb. Within their core work, they organise exchange programmes with the young people of Jerusalem. As a perfect connection to our ‘Why Dance?' series with Andrew Cuerden, we explore with dance teacher Tamara, and her friend and colleague Sara (and at times translator) what dance means to their culture, how it infiltrates life, and right now amongst the rubble and war, what dance brings them on the ground in such a difficult time. As Andrew talks into, this is not a political podcast. However as we're all experiencing politics influences everything in all of our lives. This podcast is a conversation between Andrew, Tamara and Sara and Human Rights Lawyer and CADFA CEO Nandita Dowson, who has enabled us a window of time in which we can meet and interview Tamara and Sara. As we all, Carmen, Youssef and Andrew, sat through the recording of this episode, we felt extremely moved and touched by Tamara and Sara and their way of expressing all things culture, life and hope. We don't want to reduce their words to ours, or indeed paraphrase their emotions to diminish what you might feel as you listen to their stories. For this reason, we just ask you to listen to this episode with curiosity about what life might be like for the women in Jerusalem and how dance changes our worlds. Following the recording, we joined CADFA for a beautifully open dinner where we felt welcomed with open arms. A symbolism of the culture in itself. We left moved and emotional, as we went about our usual evening, feeling blessed to have met them all and privileged to hear their stories. For more information on CADFA check them out here, and see how you might want to engage or support their work. For obvious reasons we haven't used their surnames or images of Tamara and Sara but if you'd like to connect, then please do email CADFA. To express ourselves in a silly or often child like way. Why is that? Well hold that thought and listen to our conversation as we explore our humanness and playfulness. And just to inspire you, here's a snapshot of something which stood out for us in the conversation in relation to the work Jess does…“Let the play do the work. I think it's the joyfulness. It's accessing that humour and laughter. Sometimes I do a guided meditation afterwards to look at where we hold joy in the body. It soon revealed that this lifestyle and career choice would either kill him, or that he'd spend his life in misery. This corner was clearer when, at 23 stone, with sugar addiction, insomnia, chronic pain and low self-esteem he found a Psychiatrist who asked him to follow his way of working if he wanted to get well. He didn't mean just the medication, but also personal training choices that required him to move his body every day, hire a personal trainer and get someone to advise him on his nutrition.A game changer for Fabian.Fabian now works with clients, mostly corporate men in their 40's, who have been chained to their desks and disconnected from their bodies and hence now facing burn out. As you'll hear from the introduction into this podcast, Vicki Edgson, in many people's eyes, found success as she rode the wave of nutritional education in the early 00's, with 11 books, a consultancy in Chelsea and a phone ringing for interviews and opinions on the latest food craze.Fast forward to 2024 and Vicki has found herself within a small community in Wiltshire, working her allotment, and finding contentment in ‘being' rather than ‘doing'. It's not been an easy path by any standards, with 3 strokes, which almost killed her. However it was a catalyst that brought about a slower life but perhaps a lot more contented life. If I woke up and put one foot in front of the other, I could gradually get my life backSome of you will know Vicki from her incredible books. Her first series were under The Food Doctor label, co-authored with Ian Marber, and her well-known TV series for Channel 5 The Diet Doctors, co-presented with Dr. Wendy Denning, for which they also released a best-selling book by the same name. Other books are ‘Broth', ‘It must be Hormones' and ‘GutGastronomy', co-written with Adam Palmer. She launched the Food Doctor range of foods into Tesco, back in the early 2000's and subsequently the Honestly Healthy range of foods into Selfridges and Waitrose with her god-daughter, Natasha Corrett. She works with the principles of Chinese Herbal Medicine, Ayurvedic Medicine and Naturopathic Integrated Medicine which made her a leading authority in nutrition. We agreed before the recording to keep it short, as focus is a challenge for Vicki, but as you'll hear we both felt that the conversation circled perfectly back to everything she really wanted to share with you all. It's a gentle, open and very moving conversation, and one we hope touches you in a way that makes you stop and think. Please enjoy and if you have any questions for Vicki or us, do let us know.Vicki previously wrote a beautiful piece ‘I am vulnerable but I am not weak', for our Soulhub Journal The Collective about her experience not long after the third stroke, when she was adjusting to her new way of life. We're taking a slight pivot for this episode, to start a series of talks exploring ‘Wellbeing in the Workplace'. Corporate Consultancy is a main component of Soulhub, where we connect with businesses, schools, organisations and charities and deliver bespoke programmes for their staff and employees. We start the series with Carmen Rendell in conversation with Faye Green, Principle Recruiter at eBay. Over two years ago we reached out to Faye Green at eBay to understand if there was an opportunity for us to work together. Faye and Carmen had previous corporate history at Jack Wills where Carmen as Head of Brand Campaigns interfaced with Faye as Global Talent Acquisition. Prior to Jack Wills, Faye's career was mostly in HR and recruitment within recognisable brands such as Arcadia and Selfridges before becoming Principal Recruiter at eBay. It's clear that people are at the heart of what she cares about. Faye shares her experience in creating the WeMind community at eBay just before the pandemic with her co-lead Shani Verber, and how they've navigated the ever-changing landscape of mental and physical wellbeing within a large business. She shares why it's felt important for her to lead, given her own experiences of a miscarriage and bereavement and how they shaped what she felt was missing in organisations. She didn't want others not to be in the position of not being able to ‘be not okay' within their business. They talk about the initiatives the team (with some help from Soulhub) have created such as ‘Get eBay Talking Campaign', ‘Get Walking Campaign' and how they need to flex and learn with new recruits and changes happen within the wider world and business. How they look outwards for inspiration, but tend to trust what they've created as an organic offering for those who are ready and willing to be part of the process. This is an exclusive behind the scenes exploration of what it takes to lead an organisation to start putting wellbeing at the heart of a business, whilst listening deeply to what people need and want from their employees. That's the hardest, but most rewarding part. We hope you enjoy the conversation, and we look forward to sharing others further examples from other business leaders. If you're inspired by the work Faye and her team are doing at eBay, then please do share this episode with friends and colleagues, and get in touch if you want to know more.If you'd like to feature in the Soulhubber's Podcast for ‘Wellbeing in the Workplace' please contact Carmen at Carmen@soulhub.co.uk. She willingly and very generously shared a number of options to choose from.Carmen picked the one that stood out. It was an unusual magazine front cover. She fell in love with it. 6 years later, here we are, with Debra back in her studio speaking to Carmen Rendell about her life as an artist and her first ever book The Pigment Trail.Soul stories are all about getting to the heart and essence of someone's life. Our Soulhub Journal told those stories in print and through artwork, and today we're telling them through the medium of sound. Debra Luker is an incredible artist. Her style is bold and colourful. It has a life and vitality all of it's own, born from her experiences in India. The greens, golds, yellows, blues and oranges are just a handful of incredible colours, designs and textures that awaken the soul. Over the last couple of years Debra has taken a group of explorers and new artists to India to connect with some of the majestic nature of what she loves about this country and culture. Always drawn back to her soul place, Debra would sit for hours and whilst absorbing the streets, buildings, people and atmosphere would create her sketches and paintings there and then. Once returned to the UK, she would pull them all together, and send them off to a publisher in the US, and now here she is with The Pigment Trail launched and in the hands of many an armchair traveller around the world. Today she shares of her travels and inspiration. We hope you feel the vibrancy of India through her descriptions and stories. Tom Edmunds arrived in our Soulhub world a few years before he actually arrived. What we mean by that, is we met his mum Deborah back in 2020 just before the pandemic, and then 3 years on, we received the call no mother wants to make. “Help.”Tom was given a cancer diagnosis out of nowhere. He was experiencing pain, which as we've got to know him well, realise that he level of pain management is extremely high so it must have been a strong indicator that something was wrong. He was told that not only did he have Level 4 Bowel, Liver and Stomach Cancer, but that his life expectancy would be about 6 months. Tom was 39 years old. He has two children, and he was in a fairly new relationship with the love of his life Esme, and she also has 2 children. Many people loved Tom, and as we've experienced each day, he touches hundreds of lives and is loved way beyond his immediate circle. We (Carmen & Andrew) met Tom and Esme for a walk and talk, and shared how we felt we could support them. We gave a wide directory of people and options, and he was quick to say, that we were his team. It was time for him to ‘get some control back'.Since November 2023, we've been Team Tom. This is an unusual ‘Soul Story' as sharing the experience of someone who's within our therapeutic care isn't the normal done thing. But Tom is extraordinary, and how he's managing himself and his cancer is a story we felt was important to share wider.Andrew Cuerden is your host, and together with Tom, they explore and cover Tom's back story and his present day thinking. Why he came to therapy, what he gets from it, and why he'd love more to step on this path to self-understanding.We have learnt that we can control our thoughts. That we can utilise our mindsets to control certain aspects. I deploy the tools that I have been given. He's travelled through a few very-near death experiences, hyperbaric chambers, chemotherapy, sepsis, cancer spreading to his intestines. Perforations, and poo stories are a regular occurrence in his house. He was in a fight (controlled in his favourite gym) weeks after his diagnosis, he's still working and restoring the family home and making time for his healing and reflections.Thank you for listening to Tom Edmunds' Soul Story. This recording is public so feel free to share it with those who you know would appreciate his words.Thank you Tom for your continual openness and we hope as listeners you get a real sense of what Tom is experiencing and who he's becoming as life throws curve balls at him.To follow Tom's journey, you can see him here on his Instagram @OldTomNewTom and if you'd like to donate to support his charitable fundraising for Phyllis Tuckwell. We'd love to have you back and go deeper into your experience. There's a beautiful and tangible thread of love and life, throughout the curious conversation between Pete Warnock and Carey Davis-Munro.Together they explore how humans tend to look outside for happiness, and how we're missing the LIFE right in front of or in fact inside us. How what we're feeling right here and now is life and freedom. Yet we tend to let it go past us.Pete discovered his sense of life through a lifetime of chronic pain since the age of 5 years old. In his sharing of childhood experiences you'll understand the man he is today. He reflects on the once ‘bliss baby' and how lots of things conspired against him from circumcision, being forced to change from left to right handed, ADHD, falling out of several trees, and later followed by the blow of redundancy all left him with negative self-beliefs and loathing, having thoughts of how he could end his life.“Life for me is meeting and transforming my own suffering, and teaching others how to manage theirs. Suffering is a relationship.”However, with a strong underlying curiosity of life, and a new emergence he found himself exploring meditation, massage, reiki, thai massage and breathwork. He quickly found a deep capacity to love himself, and his outlook became much more about seeking joy, connection and love, and if other things appear along the way, then he learned to embrace them. Welcoming all feelings without resistance and allowing life to flow. The birth of his son Josh deepened his exploration of breath and energy, as did his subsequent coming together with Kalindi Jordan - his tantric partner of now 15 years. It's a beautiful and insightful podcast, where you also get to sample some insight into Pete's breathwork and so don't be surprised if you're not left curious yourself to how you can find new ways of looking at yourself, your emotions and your breathing. After all. A journey that led her to London where she's stayed for the last three decades. Reflecting back over her decisions and choices, Melinda is surprised to see quite how she's embraced big life transitions, and how this now helps her in her work to support others. Fast-tracked into British culture via Channel 4, then as a freelance documentary director and producer, it was a close call with burn out that altered Melinda's path towards the rewarding world of Herbal Medicine.‘I can't imagine, being nearly 50, and still being in the media. Now I get a lot of clients from that world who come to me, and I really empathise with what they are going through.'It was a massive financial and personal commitment (8 years) to retrain, but her ambition to support other women with their health concerns - in particular the menopause - drover her forward, along with the knowledge that for too long, women's wellbeing had been swept under the carpet. Joint-hosts Carmen Rendell and Andrew Cuerden invite Carey Davis-Munro to sit in the hot, not hosting seat, for our 3rd Episode ‘Who is Carey?'. We, as always start with the exploration of what makes her feel soulful as we're treated to her experience of her local park, and her ‘coming home' place.‘I know it's part of me, part of my heart. I literally well-up when I go into Bushy Park'. Within our conversation Carey admits how exercise has worked for and against her. How she ran herself into the ground, resulting in numerous operations on her knees and ovaries, but which led her to really look at life more deeply, and in particular her relationship with food. Following an enlightening discovery of what was in her body, from metals to toxins, she vowed to change her life.A diet of nourishing food, but also a re-address of how she nurtured herself, she started doing yoga and finding ways of being calm and centred. From this place she was able to navigate the breakdown of her marriage, and choose big changes in her life from leaving a career as a PE teacher, to HR consultant and into coaching where she found, this was really what she does in life naturally, and wanted to do with the rest of her life.We love the final question when she relates her favourite food dish to her personality. We love how she shares her darkest days, and her own struggles with kindness and trusting others to be there for her, and not just go out alone. How she needs her community, as much as they need her.
