Send me a note!Did you know some kids are getting their recess taken away as punishment for not focusing, being distracted, not getting their work done, and other behavioral issues in the classroom? Maybe you're the parent to a child who has had this done to them. The American Academy of Pediatrics and The Center for Disease Control and Prevention have both made public statements emphasizing the necessity of at least 20 minutes of recess for elementary aged kids, and they both further state that recess should never be taken away as a punitive measure. Follow along as my husband and I do a quick recap of the 17 days I spent away from home while I was in the Philippines and Mark took on the role of default parent for our daughter Liliana. We discussed how he handled the daily routines like school drop offs and meals without any reminders from me. Mark shared some funny stories like when he tried taking Lilianato a 4D movie experience that didn't go as planned (IYKYK). Overall, Mark rose to the challenge and felt more confident in his parenting abilities after having to fully manage everything alone for over two weeks. Both Mark and I felt this experience strengthened our family dynamic and we are all better for it. It's one thing to be able to identify the best supports, tools and accommodations for your neurodivergent child, but I find that implementing it successfully in the classroom isn't always easy. One of the things I recommend parents or teachers to do is to spend some time introducing the entire classroom to sensory tools, what they are, who they're for, and how they help. The idea is to normalize neurodiversity early on, so that when sensory tools or fidgets are being used by an ND student in the classroom, it's less of a disruption, there's less stigma and more overall acceptance and awareness that different brains are beautiful! EPISODE 31: This week, we're diving into a topic that keeps popping up in our community, and it's a two-part issue.Firstly, some parents are puzzled about how to help their kids at school as they come home on Fridays exhausted and frustrated, or they flat out refuse to go to school, claiming it's just too stressful. Even when they do go, they return home stressed and unwilling to do homework.Teachers are noticing these struggles, too. Kids aren't turning in their work, not keeping up, with or without IEPs. It feels like we can't quite meet our kids' needs at school. But there's another side to this coin. Some parents are pushing for their children to catch up, achieve, and be successful in school. That's something schools want, too - kids to be in class every day so they fit in with their peers. However, what often gets overlooked is whether the kids feel safe at school.I feel like this is such an important conversation, so in this episode, I've brought on an expert who does this all day, every day.Meet Dr. Emily King, a Child Psychologist and former School Psychologist who has two decades of experience working closely with neurodivergent kids and teens. She received her Ph.D. in School Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is well-versed in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, DIR/Floortime, Conscious Discipline, and Social Thinking methodologies.Dr. Emily is also the founder of Learn with Dr. Emily™ where she shares online resources related to raising and educating neurodivergent youth. She specializes in providing therapy and consultation services for children diagnosed with autism, anxiety, ADHD, depression, and learning difficulties. She is passionate about empowering parents and teachers to take care of themselves so they can become the supportive adults that every neurodivergent child needs in their life. Join us for this interview, where we'll be discussing the hurdles neurodivergent kids face in school, the gap between expectations and support, the impact of anxiety on learning, and the importance of collaboration between parents and teachers. It's a conversation you really don't want to miss out on!Tune in now!Key Takeaways:Intro (00:00)Who is Dr. Emily King (02:34)Misconceptions about meeting the needs of neurodivergent children (05:37)The importance of communication between teachers and parents (11:39)The mismatch between child's abilities and school expectations (17:29)Dr. Emily's takeaway for educators and parents (23:58)The first step towards teamwork in helping kids (26:22)Sources for Dr. Emily's kid and teacher support strategies (28:52)Additional resources:
I recently had an open discussion with my instagram audience on whether or not someone with a clinical diagnosis of anxiety would be considered neurodivergent. This stemmed from an inner conflict I was experiencing and trying to decide– am I neurodivergent? I actually shared a more in depth view of where I stand on this topic personally and it's in the previous episode, 88 if you want to go back and listen to that after this. This question brought up such great conversations in my DMs and I realized how nuanced this topic was, and how much I wanted to bring this discussion to a larger platform and to include different voices on the topic. So I reached out to some of my most respected peers in this space who all have some personal and professional tie to neurodiversity. I invited Dr. Cassidy Freitas (LMFT), Andi Putt (speech therapist) and Mr. Chazz (teacher of teachers and parenting coach) to join me for this round table episode. I asked questions like What does the label of neurodivergent/ neurotypical do for people and societyif we classified too many mental health diagnoses as neurodivergent, would that “dilute” the meaning? If we include mental health diagnoses, it can seem like majority of the population would classify as neurodivergent, what does that mean for a "neurotypical" label if they are in the minority? Should you tell your child's teacher about their neurodiversity at the beginning of the school year?I asked them to weigh in on a thought someone shared with me that said “is anyone really neurotypical?”Links: Mr. Chazz InstagramMr. Chazz podcast episode: “Conscious Discipline with a ND child” Mr. Chazz podcast episode: “How to handle hitting with an OT” Mr. Chazz podcast epsiode: " Vestibular Processing with an OT" Dr. Cassidy InstagramDr. Cassidy podcast episode:” The trauma experience in parenthood”Dr. Cassidy podcast episode: “Raising a sensory sensitive child”Andi Putt InstagramAndi Putt podcast episode: “Celebrating Autism with a neurodiverse lens”Self-reflection episode on neurodiversitySensory Detectives Waitlist (next cohort: early 2024) Episode transcript: https://www.theotbutterfly.com/podcast The OT Butterfly Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theotbutterfly Work with Laura: https://www.theotbutterfly.com/parentconsult Buy "A kids book about neurodiversity" : www.theotbutterfly.com/book

Maybe they're always hitting or yelling; maybe they are getting notes sent home from school that they're not paying attention or keeps disrupting class. Before you can look for solutions to stop the behavior, you need to understand why the behavior is occurring. The cost of control is connection. And what children are always seeking is connection. Children will often try to get your attention (in both positive and negative ways) because they're desiring to connect with you. In this enlightening episode we are joined by Ginny Luther, a master instructor in Conscious Discipline. Ginny shares her deeply personal experiences and transformative insights on the profound power of connection in parenting. Drawing inspiration from her touching book, "Blue Star Grit," she unpacks the essence of genuine connections with our children, especially when dealing with “difficult” or defiant children. Key takeaways from the episode include: Understanding Connection: The central theme is the inherent need for connection that every child seeks. While many label children as merely "attention-seeking," Ginny clarifies that gaining attention is a stepping stone to achieve connection. Through this connection, children look for comfort, understanding, and the chance to make sense of their world. Brain Development and Connection: Connection is not just a heartwarming feeling; it is a critical factor in wiring the brain for impulse control, motivation, and self-regulation. By connecting with a child, we facilitate the brain's transition from a reactive state to a more controlled, responsive state. Empathy and Playfulness: Ginny emphasizes that these two elements are vital in building strong, trustworthy bonds. Whether through empathetic interactions during challenging times or playful moments that strengthen relationships, both play crucial roles in nurturing the parent-child bond. The Cost of Control: One of the episode's highlights is the understanding that in the pursuit of control, we often lose out on meaningful connections. The genuine essence of parenting lies in seeking connection rather than exerting control. Join us in this heartwarming journey with Ginny Luther as she underscores the essence and importance of connecting with ourselves, and our kids. It serves as a reminder for every parent to be truly present, fostering bonds that go beyond mere attention and delve into the heart of genuine, life-altering connections. Enjoy! Kristin Chesterman is a deep believer that all behavior is a form of communication. Addressing the lack of skills in a student (or scholar as she refers to them) is the key to regulation success. As a Title 1 Behavioral Support Teacher serving approximately 615 students in Indiana, Kristin shares personal examples of how the implementation of Conscious Discipline's powers, skills, and strategies in connection with Brain State knowledge cultivate an inclusive School Family. In this episode, she explains how Conscious Discipline provided the framework for a Junior Coaching Program and prompted a transformative shift in their school culture among their teachers. Essential Takeaways: For implementation success, teachers and administrators need to be open and curious about their perspectives concerning outcomes. A behavioral or SEL approach does not have to be prescriptive: Conscious Discipline is a framework. All behavior is a form of communication, and fortifying skills rather than denying access/inclusion is the path to self-regulation success. Vulnerability is key to connection. Regulation starts with the adults in the room. What you give to others, you strengthen within yourself. Accepting the task of helping to heal the pain and trauma of abused and abandoned children comes with some enormous challenges, but they're challenges those at Conscious Discipline and Laura Angulo believe to be well worthwhile. A former special educator and current psychologist, Laura now partners with a facility for abandoned children in Cali, Colombia that serves up to 100 children from ages 0-8. There, Laura supports 30 staff members as they implement and model Conscious Discipline, providing hope, facilitating healing, and a way forward. Join Dr. Bailey in conversation with Laura Angulo to learn how she has used the healing powers of Baby Doll Circle Time and I Love You Rituals to rebuild attachment structures in the lives of children who have lived through severe trauma and abandonment, and how these activities are not just for children. Essential Takeaways: • Laura and staff members learned it was possible to identify/flag previous abuse by observing the implementation of Baby Doll Circle Time. • Begin with rituals that have already been implemented as a common ground to work from. • Laura modeled Baby Doll Circle Time and led the staff in the activities before introducing them to the children. • Children who are over-aroused or under-aroused due to trauma benefit from I Love You Rituals. • Laura divided the Baby Doll Circle Time training for staff into two sessions on different days to allow for better processing and accurate implementation.
