Here is how the scoring works:1 point: get the year correct within 10 years (e.g., you guess 1975 and it is between 1965-1985)4 points: get the year correct within 5 years (e.g., you guess 2004 and it is between 1999-2009)7 points: get the year correct within 2 years (e.g., you guess 1993 and it is between 1991-1995)10 points: get the year dead on!Guesses can be emailed to drandrewmay@gmail.comI will read your scores out on the following episode, along with the scores of your fellow listeners! Sarah's dream of a graduate degree in funk may have to wait, but at least we can talk about "Give Up The Funk" by Parliament! That also gets us talking about musical languages we may not speak, grooves we cannot deny, and Russian gossip we can't resist. Our intro is by David Gregory Byrne, and our outro is by James Brown. Guests: Egyptian Lover The album: Cameo: Cameosis (1980) Egyptian Lover is one of the pivotal figures in shaping the sound of Los Angeles funk and hip-hop beginning in the 1980s. As a teen, he became a core member of the all-powerful Uncle Jamm's Army party crew and by the mid-80s, he was an artist in his own right, releasing a series of key electro albums that would help pave the way for the emergence of other L.A. groups like the Dream Team and N.W.A. For our episode, Egyptian Lover wanted to take us back to the formative moment before all that had happened, when he was still in high school, hustling pause tapes of the latest funk jams to his classmates. Cameo's Cameosis was the group's fourth album in three years, the first to finally hit #1 on the charts, and the source of the monster hit, "Shake Your Pants." During our discussion, we got into everything from the genius of Cameo's Larry Blackmon to what made the group different from other funk outfits (hint: the horns) to how one properly programs a slow jam within a mix of party funk songs. More on Cameosis Craig Lyles review of the album (AllMusic.com) Interview with group co-founder Tomi Jenkins and engineer Henry Falco (Wax Poetics) More on Egyptian Lover "7 Things You Should Know About Egyptian Lover" (Red Bull Music Academy) Ned Raggett's interview and profile of Egyptian Lover (The Guardian) Facebook | Twitter Show Tracklisting (all songs from Cameosis unless indicated otherwise): "Cameosis" Egyptian Lover: On the Nile "Egypt, Egypt" "Why Have I Lost You" Rick James: Come Get It! This 'cast continues to explore the influences of Widespread Panic's music.Michael Stanley's second solo album, Friends and Legends, is featured prominently this time around. The band Stanley was playing with on this album was a who's who of mid-seventies rock; Dan Fogelberg, Richie Furay, David Sanborn, Bill Szymczyk, and Joe Walsh (AND his band Barnstorm). J. Geils even got in on the act by producing the saxophone tracks. It also was produced in my current stomping grounds of Colorado... Let's Get the Show on the Road is one of my favorite Panic covers and Funky is the Drummer is a crazy jam/rap that JB has slipped into a couple of times.I really had alot of fun putting this one together - turn it up and invite the friends over... and tear the roof of the sucker!Let's Get the Show on the RoadMichael Stanleyfrom the album "Friends and Legends"She Caught the KatyAlbert Kingfrom the album "Lovejoy"Funky is the DrummerMichael Stanleyfrom the album "Friends and Legends"Give up the Funk (Tear the Roof of the Sucker)Parliamentfrom the album "Mothership Connection"Wang Dang DoodleKoko Taylorfrom the album "The Earthshaker"Can't Find My Way HomeBlind Faithfrom the album "Blind Faith"Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and BurningHot Tunafrom the album "First Pull Up, The Pull Down"Knocking 'round the ZooJames Taylor and the Original Flying Machinefrom the album "James Taylor and the Original Flying Machine"Shouldn't Have Took More than You GaveDave Masonfrom the album "Alone Together"TipitinaProfessor Longhairfrom the album "New Orleans Piano"John's OtherHot Tunafrom the album "First Pull Up, The Pull Down"Just Like a WomanBob Dylanfrom the album "Blonde on Blonde"SpoonfulWillie Dixonfrom the album "I am the Blues"GladTrafficfrom the album " John Barleycorn Must Die"Let's Get it OnMarvin Gayefrom the album "Let's Get it On"DOWNLOAD the cast here(right click to save to hard drive):Everyday Companion Podcast #69Click here to subscribe through iTunes.
Would you believe that this podcast is finished and ready and done and I am ready to go to bed by 10pm. This is a fucking scarily strange occurrence. I've only had about four beers too, which is also a little unsual. The only organisational task at which I have abjectly failed is keeping the length of this podcast down to an hour. Basically, having different people co-present is really nice, and I think it makes the podcasts miles better, but I am still coming to terms with the discipline of keeping the talky talky down to a manageable level and sticking to that hour which has made these weekly swear-morsels so digestible in the last few months. At the Wickerman Festival Callum from Meursault made the highly contentious statement that not all funk music was buttock-clenchingly awful and, whilst I mocked him, I decided that someone with that kind of crazy recklessness must be brave enough to bring a Toadcast full of funky classics to an audience of sulky, morose indie kids with art school fringes. So good luck to Callum - I am going to be listening to this with the same curiosity as the rest of the audience I would think. It's hard to get a handle on what a podcast sounds like as you record it, so I guess if I am going to absorb the lesson of the funk then I will have to have a cup of coffee, put my feet up on the couch and listen to it the same as everyone else.
