Well alright, welcome to Groove U. This week's lesson is brought to you by the EarWax crew!Parliament's "Mothership Connection" is far out, in your face, uncut, from outer space, in the groove, and it'll make you move. With a cast of characters and lore galore, this record has cool to spare. George Clinton and Bootsy Collins are the most well-known of the P-Funk collective, and while their hands are absolutely all over this record, it is quite obviously a group effort. So let the funk wash over you, and climb aboard the Mothership! Thanks for listening!

Jeffery Scott Mitchell reflects on the philosophical underpinnings of five significant Parliament albums, from Mothership Connection to Trombipulation. Join us for our second installment in this years Essential project – where we dig deep into a genre and bring you the albums that matter most. This year we're covering the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) and Funk genres. Today on the show we talk about records from two very influential and well-known bands – Iron Maiden and Parliament. In 1980, Iron Maiden released their debut record to much critical and commercial success. Their combination of punk and progressive rock sound was perfectly fitted for audiences in the UK and Europe looking for the next thing after punk music.A few years prior, the George Clinton led Parliament group was poised to release their defining record. By building on the sound of James Brown (and stealing a few of his band members), they were ready to start a musical movement. Hits like Mothership Connection and Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof Off the Sucker) would go on to become mainstays in the genre and help define much about modern day hip-hop. Not to mention the amazing live shows they would become famous for

Tonight I busted out some videos I haven't seen or shown in a long time. These videos are the beginning of the cornerstones of Skydome Atlantis and Spaceship Earth. If these two names caught you off guard and you're hazy on the definition, let me compare them to "New Jerusalem" because that's exactly what these places are. To the Muslims, this is known as the Mothership Connection. The same mothership that has been hanging outside of Earth and waiting for the day of Judgement (or the day of Ascension) when the brothers and sisters of Islam are said to have returned to Nirvana and gifted their mansion in heaven with 17 virgins to each warrior of God. This is where they're said to stay for eternity by the prophet Muhammad.

At the beginning of 1975, Gerald Ford was president, the United States and Soviet Union were approaching a détente in the space race, and a barber-turned-singer with a wild imagination named George Clinton was redefining the possibilities of funk music with his bands, Parliament and Funkadelic. That year, their iconic album Mothership Connection played off one of Clinton's fantasies, sending Black people to space. Clinton felt it was up to him to paint a new tableau of Afrofuturism. Many of the songs on the album were instant dance-floor anthems — and part of funk's biggest crossover moment to date. In this episode, Clinton and many of his collaborators on Mothership Connection, including bass icon Bootsy Collins and trombonist-arranger Fred Wesley, look back on the drugs, diapers, and free-form camaraderie that fueled this psychedelic masterpiece.New episodes of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums release every Tuesday, only on Amazon Music.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The Ramones are considered the first true punk band by many. Despite never having a lot of commercial success, the band achieved immortality as the founders of a rock genre, and inspired a multitude of bands to follow. Their debut album, self titled as Ramones started it all in 1976. The album came out in February but we're featuring it in the summer of 1976 which is considered the "summer of punk."The Ramones got their name from Paul McCartney of The Beatles, who would check into hotels using the pseudonym "Paul Ramon." Each band member took on the Ramone name, so the band consisted of Joey Ramone on lead vocals, Johnny Ramone on guitar, Dee Dee Ramone on bass and backing vocals, and Tommy Ramone on drums and backing vocals. The Ramones came out of Queens, New York and got their start in 1974 playing at the Manhattan clubs like Max's Kansas City and CBGB's, where they would be regulars. While the iconic look of the ban is imitated frequently, at the time of the hippie and glam rock popularity they stood out in their black leather jackets. The music was different as well - high energy, simple chords, and tight, short singles. They played fast, and they played loud! Recording was fast as well. Sessions for this debut album were completed in a week at a cost of $6,400. The result gave the appearance of a do-it-yourself work which hid the very deliberate work with overdubbing and doubling vocals. While the debut album was not considered a commercial success at the time, it has grown in stature over the years to the point that it clocks in a number 33 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of all time, and number 1 on Spin Magazine's list of "50 Most Essential Punk Records."The group would tour almost continually from their founding until they disbanded in 1996. Unfortunately all four of the founding members of the Ramone's have died.Friend of the show Ted Shomake joins us to highlight this iconic band and album. Judy Is A PunkThis song refers to Jackie and Judy, two juvenile delinquents who join the Ice Capades and the domestic terrorist Symbionese Liberation Army. They may have died by the end of the song. Clocking in at just over a minute and a half, you'd better listen quick!Blitzkrieg BopIf you have only heard one Ramones song, this is likely the one that you've heard. Despite the thinking that the song drops Nazi references, it is really about going to a concert. The band wanted to be a big rock and roll band, and this song was designed to give the audience something to chant, similar to the Bay City Rollers song, "Saturday Night." "Hey! Ho!...Let's go!"53rd and 3rdBassist Dee Dee Ramone wrote this homage to the New York street corner also known as "The Loop," a location notorious for male prostitution in the mid-70's. The song tries to make a bleak reality something fun. Now I Wanna Sniff Some GlueMuch of the work of the Ramones was designed to be shocking, but not meant to be taken seriously. "Now I wanna sniff some glue. Now I wanna have somethin' to do." Let's DanceWhile the rest of this album is original music, this is a cover of a 1962 song performed Chris Montez and written by Jim Lee. The Ramones took the speed and volume up from the Montez version, but otherwise stayed pretty faithful to the original. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the motion picture “Logan's Run"Actually we are playing the more disco oriented theme from the television series "Logan's Run." but the motion picture of the post-apocalyptic world hit the theaters this month. STAFF PICKS:Don't Go Breaking My Heart by Elton John and Kiki DeeBrian's staff pick features a famous duet inspired by the duets of Motown. John recorded his part in Toronto and Dee recorded her part in London. The original version had Elton John singing over 3/4 of the song, but he was reigned in by the producer. The song was a big hit, clocking in at the top of the charts in both the U.S. and the U.K. Surprisingly, this song is the first number 1 hit in the U.K for Elton John.Tear the Roof Off the Sucker (Give Up the Funk) by ParliamentBruce brings us perhaps the most famous P-Funk song, written by drummer Jerome Brailey, Bassist Bootsy Collins, and producer/founder George Clinton. This is off the fourth Parliament album "Mothership Connection." It was a concept album loosely based on an outer space theme, and would create the base for future P-Funk concerts. Cherry Bomb by the RunawaysWayne's staff pick brings us back to the punk feel with an all female band. Joan Jett and Lita Ford both got their start in this group. Other members included Jackie Fox on bass, Sandy West on drums, and lead singer Cherie Currie also contributed her name to the title of the song. The Runaways were a "put together" group rather than an organic group.Tom Tauberts Blues by Tom WaitsTed Shomake brings us a deep cut which captures the turn in Waits music from commercial to the more gravelly feel his later works would have. The song is about an alcoholic seeking money to go "waltzing Matilda," or going walking around as a vagrant. It is a lyrically dense, heartbreaking song. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Movin' by Brass ConstructionThis disco tinged mostly-instrumental takes us out of this episode.

THE MOTHERSHIP CONNECTION. RACISM IN UFOLOGY. DOGON WISDOM. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/alicia-banks1/message
In this episode, Rodney loses his funk cred by not recognizing Parliament lyrics and the madmen explore the depths of classic science-fiction horror with a look at the Mothership Roleplaying Game by Sean McCoy and published by Tuesday Knight Games.
In the inaugural episode of Mothership Connection we are going to tackle the Star Wars saga all 9 films and give my opinion on how the prequels should have went make some minor tweaks to the original trilogy and reshape the sequel trilogy giving the characters in the films actual purpose and substance and present them in a way that I feel would have been better received by the audience and also offer suggestion on what episode 10-12 could of been had the sequel trilogy we got not stomp all over the established lore. I am just a fan of the franchise and do not proclaim to have masterful knowledge of all things Star Wars I just want to throw my ideas out there and give my opinion as a fan...keep shaking your knees!

Before we delve into the funk let’s start by saying that we’re a little out of our depth here because funk, and specifically P-funk, is a mad, mad sci-fi psychedelic world of slap bass, 70s keyboard freak outs, horny horns, gospel-esque backing vocals, R&B melodies, the occasional Hendrix-style guitar freak out and more funk than James Brown could shake a stick at. The mythology behind Parliament’s 10 (!) concept albums is deep, freaky, hilarious and acts as a critique on 70s Black America. It’s also neigh on impenetrable, yet remains a cornerstone of Afrofutrism. It is, in many ways, absolutely fascinating. Your mileage may very. Chris finds funk hard to connect with, whilst Mark and Dave are keen to extol the influence and legacy of Parliament-Funkadelic’s mental freaky funk outs. Along the way we run down Parliament’s discography, talk about the enduring legacy of George Clinton, Bootsy Collins and Bernie Worrell’s contribution to popular music. We’re more than aware that Mothership Connection is Parliament’s biggest, most well known album. One could make the argument that is anything but unsung. Yet in a discography that is overwhelmingly white, we think it’s time we let our audience know about something a bit different. Should we add it to our discography? As ever, you decide.
Surprise! Part two of our Biffy episode is available a few days early, as we look to go ahead with ‘Mothership Connection’ by Parliament this Friday. The gloves are off in this episode as Chris finally gets to the root of his deep seated disdain for the band, we talk about this album, where it sits in the context of their discography, and the weirdness of their fame. We also get a bit philosophical as we ponder how they could have been a big important rock band but instead have become the British version of the Foo Fighters. It’s up to you to decided whether or not that’s a good thing. Most importantly though, it’s time for you guys to finally do the thing you do so well: vote on whether or this album should be included in our discography. Have we managed to make the case for this being or not being added to it? As ever, you decide.
Suzen Tekla Kruglinska (The Shining 2:37 podcast) and Joe Dator (cartoonist at The New Yorker) complete their tenure at the show while Chris becomes melancholy and Rudi spots something curious about one of the paintings. Additional music by Ben Coleman (Soundcloud.com/JoyRex9)

"Burning it to the ground, from the ashes see what might rise..." - Dubbul O It's been a while, but with a reworked studio setup we welcome the second-ever guest to the show - the syllable-spraying Dubbul O! You'll certainly have heard him on here before, whether it's been with The Mouse Outfit, Voodoo Black, Mothership Connection, or one of his other projects. This month, he came through for a chat about his approach to MCing and with a bunch of tracks for us to hear (including an exclusive), which the selection for the episode is centered around. With it being March, we also include some Phife and Biggie in the mix, and it's Brooklyn's Finest who kicks things off... Check out Dubbul O's Bandcamp, Twitter, and Spotify too! You can also buy his work on iTunes if that's your shop of choice, and find everything from him and the rest of the label at room2records.com. Twitter : @airadam13

You can’t have the funk unless you have the whole funk and nothing but the funk, so Discord & Rhyme is treating you to a second round of P-Funk. This time, Mike rounds out the story by discussing Parliament, who are tighter and much more orderly than the looser, rougher Funkadelic, and feature a truly excellent horn section. Their 1975 masterpiece Mothership Connection officially declared Parliament-Funkadelic as a cohesive, galactic entity, and its space-age soundscapes have massively influenced music since, even spawning the “G-Funk” subgenre of hip-hop most famously associated with Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. Even more relevant to this podcast’s very particular tastes — it’s kind of proggy! See https://discordpod.com/listen/015-parliament-mothership-connection-1975 for complete show notes and a quotation from George Clinton that backs up our "funk is prog" theory.
Do not attempt to adjust your podcast apps. Discord & Rhyme is devoting the whole month of January to the world of George Clinton’s Parliament-Funkadelic, better known as P-Funk. Though P-Funk eventually came to comprise a single, massive collective of musicians releasing records under the names Parliament and Funkadelic, the two sides of P-Funk have different sounds and histories, and in this episode and the next, we’re going to dive in to what makes each one supergroovalistic. We’re starting with Funkadelic, as Phil takes Ben, Dan, and Mike through 1971’s Maggot Brain, a ragged, scuzzy, surreal album that some consider P-Funk’s crowning achievement. And be sure to come back in two weeks, when Mike will be covering Parliament’s masterpiece Mothership Connection, thus completing the P-Funk cosmology. See complete show notes at https://discordpod.com/listen/014-funkadelic-maggot-brain-1971
In October 1990, Miguel D’Souza started The Mothership Connection on 2SER FM with Roxanne. Within a couple of years it was Sydney’s preeminent hip hop radio show. Every Tuesday at 2pm (or at 2.30pm for a period), it was one of the few places on any radio station that played hip hop, underground hip hop, local hip hop, while also hosting hip hop DJs and open mic freestyle sessions. Around April 1998, Miguel handed the radio show to me. I was 20. I had no idea what I was doing. And I spent five years trying to work it out while also trying to work out what I was about. In this chat (edited from 2.5 hours), Miguel and I compare notes about the show, what it meant to us, the role we think it played in the local community, some of our favorite memories, and how it changed us. Topics include: - How the format of the show evolved - The recent Australian youth protests. Is change happening? - Indigenous hip hop - Finding yourself by bringing others together Contributing to a community while analyzing it - How Miguel researched and interviewed people Getting people into hip hop - Dealing with aggression, bad rap, open doors - How the Internet and September 11 affected rap and the business of rap - The Four Elements, style enforcing, and fascism Stepping aside as one ages - or not? - Participants, observers, and tourists in subcultures - What’s real hip hop and who gets to decide? - Finding an identity in Australia as an immigrant Names mentioned include: Molly Meldrum, Easy Bass, DJ Kavi-R, Gil Scott Heron, Bootsy Collins, Roy Ayers, Roc Raida, DJ Qbert, Def Wish Cast, Just Us, Mako and Perret, Katalyst, Obese Records, Next Level Records, Parallax Records, Celsius, Bliss n Eso, Hilltop Hoods, Elefant Traks, Urthboy, Meta Bass n Breath, The Sleeping Monk, Ugly Duckling, Raised by Wolves, Wu Tang Clan. The band Stanley was playing with on this album was a who's who of mid-seventies rock; Dan Fogelberg, Richie Furay, David Sanborn, Bill Szymczyk, and Joe Walsh (AND his band Barnstorm). J.
