During the times where tempers flares up it is so important to be gentle with your words. The question, is it easy? In response, no! However, in the book of Proverbs chapter 15 instructs us in verse (1) A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger."
One thing I'm learning is, there isn't a one-mold-model we need to fit into before we can belong in the kingdom of God. Yes, the likeness of Jesus is the standard we seek, but the image of God is found in all sorts of different shapes and sizes, patterns and colors, stories and perspectives. God is present, even in unexpected places. And God is at work, even in mysterious ways. Even if we don't understand or agree or relate. Maybe we don't have to match in order to belong. Listen in. What wins in the face of division? What's the play we should call when it feels like it's an "us vs. them" game? In a culture that amplifies the loudest voices and the hottest takes, what if a win is gained by gentleness? A few weeks back, Pastor Ian got to sit down with Scott Sauls, an incredibly gifted pastor and author who is passionate about a concept he calls "a gentle answer." In this Crucial Conversation together, they address how Christians can faithfully engage in some of the difficult conversations that can easily feel divisive, knowing that Jesus shows us how to embrace those different from us in more ways than one. As you listen, challenge yourself to think of a way you can embrace someone that might be a "them" in your mind. The way of Jesus was gentleness, and his mightiest act was done even for those who crucified him. How can that change the way we interact and engage with our world? Support the show

Scott Sauls is the pastor of Christ Presbyterian Church in Nashville, TN and author of 5 (6th on the way) books. He previously worked alongside Tim Keller His book, A Gentle Answer, is what prompted me to ask him to speak on this issue, as one of his gifts is a willingness to hear other points of view, and thoughtfully answer them while still holding firm and rooted in his beliefs. This conversation will focus on what Scott's view of being truly "Pro life" means, and what it should look like for Christians in 2022. A gentle answer turns anger away. But mean words stir up anger.”Proverbs 15:1
Daily devotional commentary for August 31 taken from Proverbs 15:1
In this episode Chris gives tips and scriptures on how to effectively pray for our world during this difficult time. Show Notes & Links: -If you are already a prayer warrior, keep going! -Don't get distracted by world events. Tips to overcome distractions: Turn off the TV news. Read selected online digests to know what's going on. Temper your social media. FOMO is a real addiction. You don't need to know everything from every viewpoint. Be confident in God's wisdom. (James 1:5) How should we pray for the world? Remember time spent praying is not as important as your heart. (Mt. 6:6-7) Be sure and listen. Prayer is two-way communication! Who should we pray for? Pray for your neighborhood. Pray for your community and churches. Pray for our country. Pray for the world. Before you pray, remind yourself of these six things: God has it all covered. (Rom. 11:36) He is faithful (2 Thes. 3:3) He is patient, not slow. (2 Pet. 3:9) God is in control and trustworthy. (Ps. 145:13) One thing God asks us to do: be still (Ps. 46:10) "Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring to you today. The Lord will fight for you; you need only be still." A sermon about righteous anger, Aaron's pet peeve, and a couple of ways to get extremely honest with yourself.
A sermon about the way of Jesus, the cycle of anger, and life in a deeply haunted trash fire.
In the past year, Covid has presented us with many challenges and as our collective stress level has been steadily rising, we have seen the pressure of the pandemic lead to a surfacing of issues that are now causing significant levels of division both in our country, our communities, and sadly, even in our churches. In this episode, Dan Cody from our Church Management Solutions team had a conversation with Scott Sauls, Senior Pastor of Christ Presbyterian Church in Nashville, Tennessee. Scott is the author of several books, including his most recent work, A Gentle Answer, in which he discusses how followers of Jesus can live and love like Christ in a defensive and divided era. They talk about what it means to abide in the gentleness of Christ and why it is imperative that we model our posture after Him in the way that we share our strong convictions. For a list of resources, visit the episode page on our website. In a defensive, divided, politically and socially hostile “cancel culture,” how can Christians live counter-culturally by loving others as Christ has loved us, even when we were his enemies? How can we become the kind of people who turn away wrath with the fruit of Christ's gentleness (Proverbs 15:1)? In this message, Nashville pastor Scott Sauls will explore what a gentle answer can look like in our hearts, homes, churches, and world. Scott Sauls is a longtime friend of Rooted, a veteran conference speaker and lead pastor of our 2018 host church, Christ Presbyterian in Nashville, Tennessee. https://wisdom-trek.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/Wisdom-Trek2800.jpg () Wisdom-Trek / Creating a Legacy Welcome to Day 396 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom A Gentle Answer Deflects Anger – Proverbs 15:1-17 Thank you for joining us for our 5 days per week wisdom and legacy building podcast. This is Day 396 of our trek, and today is Wisdom Wednesday. Every Wednesday along life's trail, we dig for the nuggets of wisdom that are found within the book of Proverbs. Today we will explore the first half of Chapter 15. https://wisdom-trek.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/download-5.png () We are broadcasting from our studio at Home2 in Charlotte, North Carolina. After a week in North Carolina, we are heading back to Marietta today and will be staying until Sunday evening to work with clients and celebrate our granddaughter Aurora's 5th birthday. Late Sunday we will return for about 10 days before heading out to Arizona to invest some time with our friends and partners the Mecoms on our construction project in Mesa. This past Saturday we had a wonderful time with Josphat and Emily Yego, who are Chelimo's parents. Sharing time and meals with them and discussing plans for their leadership institute in Kenya was very enjoyable. We hope to visit them in Kenya sometime within the next couple of years. Of course, the highlight for all of us is investing time in our mutual grandson Kiprono. https://wisdom-trek.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/IMG_2748-e1469467987789.jpg () To navigate all of these future plans that God has for us will certainly take wisdom and insight, and there is no better place in the world than the Book of Wisdom, which is Proverbs, to gather that wisdom. On our trek for today, we will dig into the first 17 verses of chapter 15. The title for today's trek is taken from verse 1, and it is… A Gentle Answer Deflects Anger 1 A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare. There are many exhortations within Scripture about controlling your speech. One of the best ways to avoid or minimize a potentially volatile situation is to respond with gentleness. It is very difficult for an argument to last when it is one sided. The best way to respond is with a gentle answer, which will usually diffuse the situation. If you respond with harshness, then it will create an ugly situation where nothing is truly settled or accomplished. One commitment I had made to Paula before we were married is that I would not argue with her and that if we had any differences of opinion, we would work through them rationally and with prayer. After nearly 37 years of marriage, I can testify that this practice has worked extremely well for us. https://wisdom-trek.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/a-gentle-answer.jpg () 2 The tongue of the wise makes knowledge appealing, but the mouth of a fool belches out foolishness. It is so refreshing to be in the presence of a wise person. When they speak, it is usually limited, but very insightful and powerful. Their speech is full of knowledge and without pretense. On the other hand, when you are in the company of a fool, it is evident that they are just spewing verbal garbage, and time spent with them has little redeeming value. Choose wisdom over foolishness. 3 The Lord is watching everywhere, keeping his eye on both the evil and the good. God knows all things, and he even understands the thoughts and intents of our minds. A person who believes that he can hide or get away with that which is contrary to God's precepts is only fooling himself. Be good and Godly. 4 Gentle words are a tree of life; a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit. Similar to verse 1, our speech should always be gentle and helpful. When you are kind and helpful, then your words will bring healing and hope to those who listen to your wise and gentle words. If you are hurtful or deceptive in...
Pastor Marcus discusses our place as Christians in a tough election campaign. While remaining politically neutral, he highlights the role of a leader in our society and reminds us that, as believers, our role is to properly represent our Heavenly king to a broken world.
