SynopsisPerformers need composers and composers need performers. And some performers really like composers–and vice versa. That seems to be the case with the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio, comprised of Joseph Kalichstein, piano; Jaime Laredo, violin; and Sharon Robinson, cello, and the Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer Ellen Taaffe Zwilich. On today's date in 2011, at a La Jolla Music Society concert in San Diego, California, the Trio premiered the fourth work they had commissioned from Zwilch. She created a blues-y piano quintet, scored for the same ensemble as Schubert's famous Trout Quintet, so for this “blue trout” Quintet, the Trio were joined by violist Michael Tree and double-bassist Harold Robinson. In notes for her new piece, Zwilich wrote: "My Quintet is in three movements, the second of which has the title ‘Die Launische Forelle' (roughly translated: ‘The Moody Trout'). I couldn't resist using a very small quote from the Schubert song on which his Quintet is based. I also took the liberty of allowing that movement to spin out musical images of a ‘moody' trout. In all three movements the weight and character of the contrabass is an important element in the overall design.”Music Played in Today's ProgramEllen Taaffe Zwilich (b. 1939) Piano Quintet The Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio; Michael Tree, vla; Harold Robinson, db. In this talk author Brent Coutts discusses his recently published book, Crossing the Lines, a history of New Zealand homosexual soldiers in the Second World War. While he uncovered fifty homosexual men who served in the military during the war, his research focused on Ralph Dyer, Douglas Morison, and Harold Robinson, three men who were female impersonators in the Pacific Kiwi Concert Party and Tui Concert Party. Coutts discusses their lives before, during, and after the war, and how he uncovered this new historical narrative which enriches our understanding of the New Zealand soldier experience during this conflict. These monthly Public History Talks are a collaboration between the National Library of New Zealand and the Ministry for Culture and Heritage. Recorded live at the National Library of New Zealand, 7 July 2021. Download a transcript of this talk: https://nzhistory.govt.nz/files/pdfs/brent-coutts-transcript.pdf

Ordinary men living through extraordinary times, New Zealand soldiers Harold Robinson, Ralph Dyer and Douglas Morison shared a queer identity and a love of performance, living as gay men within the military forces during World War II, and boosting troop morale as female impersonators in wartime concert parties. In the Ockham NZ Book Awards longlisted 'Crossing the Lines', Brent Coutts brings to light their previously untold story, unfolding a tale of strong friendships, the search for love and belonging as homosexuals within the military and civilian worlds, and the impact on the queer community today. Elitch Gardens is so much more than a theme park. It's more like a nostalgia factory with roller coasters, and it's been in business for over 100 years. The New Elitch's, as the current incarnation is commonly known, is opening this weekend, so Bree invited three-time Emmy winning comedy writer Hallie Haglund and zero-time Emmy winning City Cast producer Paul Karolyi on the show to talk about everything Elitch's — from the oldest of the old to the unclear future. Are you an Old Elitch's person? Or a New Elitch's person? Use Voice Memos, Voice Recorder, or another app to record your Elitch's memory and send it to us at denver@citycast.fm, and we might play it on the show. Just remember to say your name and whether you're an Old Elitch's person or a New Elitch's person. The excerpt of the oral history with Mrs. Harold Robinson (née Laura Besser) heard in this episode comes courtesy of the oral history collection at History Colorado. You can listen to the whole conversation, including a few more juicy Elitch's tidbits right here. Subscribe to the City Cast Denver newsletter: denver.citycast.fm Get the tweets: @citycastdenver
A new book shines a light on a previously untold history, that of homosexual New Zealand soldiers serving during World War II. Brent Coutts' book, called Crossing the Lines, focuses predominantly on the lives of Harold Robinson, Ralph Dyer and Douglas Morison - three men who served together and formed a troupe of female impersonators.

Crossing the Lines is a new book by Brent Coutts, a researcher, historian, writer, and teacher. It chronicles the lives of three homosexual men Harold Robinson, Ralph Dyer and Douglas Morison, who during the Second World War entertained the allied troops as female impersonators in the Kiwi and Tui Concert Parties. This was at a time when homosexual sex was illegal, and could lead to court martial and imprisonment.

With the year 2020 St. Paul Senior Services has now been serving San Diego seniors for 60 years.St. Paul Senior Services has cared for thousands of seniors over these 60 years. We've earned many prestigious awards for our communities and care, and have had many influential visitors. The idea for St. Paul senior services began in 1953 when father Harold Robinson of St. Paul's Church and its parishioners had the vision to build a retirement community for older adults of modest income. In 1960. St. Paul's nonprofit corporation was established, and in 1962 St. Paul's Manor assisted living opened as our first senior living community soon after St. Paul's John a McColl Family Health Center opened its doors, a Skilled Nursing Facility in San Diego. Followed by St. Paul's Villa. And our intergenerational senior day program at the Community Care Center three St. Paul's PACE Centers throughout the county two alternative care centers and a new St. Paul's PACE alternative care site to be opened in Encinitas this year. During this time we've also opened six homeless housing projects for over two hundred and forty formerly homeless seniors. As our mission States; St. Paul's is spiritually guided to help seniors lead enriched lives through excellent and innovative services. John and Sharon McCall and their family have supported St. Paul's since 1958. It came very much aware that there were a number of senior residents who live in San Diego. As leaders in senior care we host educational programs for the San Diego community. We have also launched a networking program for young professionals in the senior care industry to provide education and support. To give back to the community we have a Food Bank for seniors with food securities. Arranged an annual essential needs drive for our low-income pace seniors. Hosts an annual blanket drive for seniors in need an annual lovegala a prayer breakfast for leaders from all faiths. A yearly legislative breakfast to educate our elected officials and the community on senior issues and we organize annual holiday events for our residents including Memorial Day and Veterans Day where we honor our veterans. And what about the next 60 years for St. Paul Senior Services. And with the mature market growing Seoul will say polls grow to meet the needs and the desires of future seniors plans for St. Paul's manner to be reimagined are underway. The newly refreshed McCall health center may be expanded and the Home Office city block will be developed to provide more senior housing. The vacant lot across the street will be developed as a multi-purpose housing and commercial enterprise. With the plaza expanding to serve more seniors in the South Bay. At. Paul's PACe will continue to expand across the region with additional supportive housing for homeless seniors in two new projects opening in 2021, and others are in the planning stage. We can't talk about our accomplishments or our future without recognizing our visionary board members and our amazing employees. We have 48 dedicated volunteer board members on 4 separate boards, and over 650 staff. Also St. Paul's could not be where it is today without our caring and compassionate volunteers and donors who dedicate their time talent and treasure to our seniors. The future is very bright for those we serve and also for those who are called to serve.

Rex Surany is the new Principal bass of the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. He is also working as an assistant teacher in cooperation with Harold Robinson, the Principal Bass of the Philadelphia Orchestra, at the Juilliard School. His musical education began with piano lessons when he was 7 years old. After two years of piano, he switched exclusively to double bass with Robert Peterson of Trenton, New Jersey. In 2002, upon completing the Vance repertoire with Peterson, Rex then started to study Rabbath Method with Nicholas Walker, double bass Professor at Ithaca college, and joined the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra under maestro Joseph Primavera's direction. Rex's first year of college, in 2006, was spent at The Colburn School in Los Angeles. There he studied with David Moore and Paul Ellison. After a year, he was admitted to the Curtis Institute of Music, where, in addition to studying double bass, he found and pursued interests in composing, transcribing, and arranging that continue today. A few weeks after graduating from Curtis, in May 2012, Rex became a temporary member of the New York Philharmonic with Alan Gilbert as Music Director. While Rex was working at “The Phil”, he spent a lot of his relief and vacation time traveling to Berlin to study the Berlin Philharmonic tradition and German bow technique with Matthew McDonald and Janne Saksala; first principal basses. After two years of working in New York, studying in Berlin, and auditioning in North America, Europe, and even Scandanavia, Rex finally won his first audition for a section position at the Metropolitan Opera in 2014. And only one year later, he won the principal position. Rex has won numerous accolades in both solo and orchestral bass realms. In June 2009, he was awarded 2nd prize of the ISB (International Society of Bassists) Orchestral Competition. The following summer, he was and the 3rd prize-winner of the 2010 Bradetich Foundation International Solo Competition. In 2011, Rex was the 2nd prize-winner at the ISB Solo competition. Rex has performed with many orchestras including: the Pittsburgh Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Haddonfield “Symphony in C”, the Boston Symphony, the American Ballet Theatre, the New York Philharmonic, and the Metropolitan opera. Today’s episode features Indianapolis Symphony principal bassist Ju-Fang Liu. We had a great conversation about growing up in Taiwan, her years studying at the Interlochen Arts Academy and at Indiana University with Lawrence Hurst and Bruce Bransby, her time in New World, teaching, playing jazz, studying bass overseas, and several other topics. We also feature excerpts from her wonderful solo album, which I highly recommend checking out—it really is bass playing at its finest. Enjoy! About Ju-Fang: Ju-Fang Liu was appointed Principal Bass of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra by Maestro Mario Venzago in 2003, shortly after receiving her bachelor and master's degrees in double bass performance from Indiana University. There she studied with notable bass pedagogues Bruce Bransby and Larry Hurst. Ms. Liu’s musical interests encompass all aspects of musical performance. She was a repeat performer in the world-renowned Marlboro Music Festival working with the top chamber music professionals of our time as well as performing in the Aspen and Tanglewood Music Festivals. The American Symphony i New York.
