Robyns Instagram A little piece from Robyns site: Eight years ago, I hit rock bottom.I had been so unhappy in my job and honestly, with my life for a long time. Eventually I was signed off from nursing with burnout, anxiety and in heart failure. I felt so stuck and lost. I wanted to change my life but had no idea where to start. I spent so much time, energy, and more money than I care to admit trying to figure it out — books, podcasts and 1-1 coaching when I could afford it. So many manifestation tools. You name it, I have tried it. I would only ever get so far. What I didn't know back then was that I needed to do some inner work. Visualising and making a vision board would only get me so far. I had low self-worth, no confidence and a lot of limiting beliefs about myself. I had spent my life people pleasing and following the crowd. I had no idea who I really was. To truly change my life, I had to understand and heal the patterns, beliefs and fears holding me back. Self-work is what helps you reconnect with who you really are, uncover what you truly want, and change your life. It's not about hoping things will happen—it's about intentionally transforming from the inside out so you can actually make them happen. This work is the key to creating lasting, meaningful change. The Inner Space is exactly what I wish I had back then — one place filled with tools and steps that actually work. Everything I've learned, both personally and professionally, is here to make it easier for you to create your life and become the best version of yourself. I know you'll love it as much as I do. Mercedas Taaffe-Cooper is an Irish boxing pioneer. A competitor in the 90s when female fighters were thin on the ground, she sparred with Deirdre Gogarty and boxed alongside Jane Couch. She was also one of the first female coaches in the country, guiding the Reynolds brothers, Stephen and Alan, who won a combined 12 senior titles at the National Stadium. Here, Merc talks about the struggle for recognition in the early years, how she and others helped knock down the door to allow Katie Taylor to fight Alanna Murphy in a groundbreaking 2001 contest, being part of the coaching ticket for the men's World Championships that same year and much more. After a move to Australia, where she continued in an education which was encouraged by the great Nicholas Cruz, she developed further as a psychologist and exercise scientist, combining her practical skills with her boxing background to ultimately develop CounterPunch. Per her own notes it's an ‘effective, fun-filled, evidence based program to guide young people toward achieving their undoubted potential'. CounterPunch has become a success story Down Under, recently celebrating its first national champion, and now Merc is looking to spread its influence and bring it home to Ireland. Here, she tells The Rocky Road all about her journey which started kickboxing and is now changing lives by educating kids through the medium of boxing. Hosted on Acast. What Businesses Need to Know About the Digital Services Act

Irish Tech News Audio Articles

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 26, 2024 5:07

How will "the constitution of the internet" affect Ireland's tech firms? asks Sinéad Taaffe, Public & Regulatory Partner at Fieldfisher. Enter the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA) The DSA became fully applicable across the EU on 17 February 2024. One month on from the full application of the DSA, here's a refresher of who it applies to and what it means for them. The DSA seeks to make the online space safer by preventing illegal activities and protecting the fundamental rights of users through enhanced transparency and stronger accountability by intermediary service providers operating in the EU. The DSA introduces obligations, for example, relating to content moderation, online advertising, recommender systems and dark patterns. There is a key focus under the DSA on better protection for minors. In Ireland, Coimisiún na Meán (CnaM) has the role of Digital Services Coordinator (DSC) responsible for the supervision and enforcement of the DSA. The DSC can impose fines and periodic penalty payments and adopt interim measures in order to avoid the risk of serious harm. Who does the DSA apply to? The DSA applies to all providers of online intermediary services in the EU, whether or not the providers are established in the EU. Online intermediary service providers include mere conduit services, caching services and hosting services, e.g. online platforms and online search engines. The most onerous obligations are imposed on very large online providers and search engines (VLOPs and VLOSEs). With the aim of enhancing transparency, intermediary services are obliged to report regularly on content moderation they are engaged in. Hosting service providers are required to put in place mechanisms that allow for the notification of illegal content on their service. Online platforms are required to have an effective complaint-handling system in place. They must also disclose the use of algorithms to recommend content and disclose information on advertisements. Online marketplaces must comply with additional obligations, for example, and they must obtain certain information from traders to ensure traceability. As usual, great power means greater responsibility for those VLOPs and VLOSEs, the big social media and search companies, to whom the strictest obligations of the DSA apply. These online giants, who will be supervised by the European Commission, must comply with all of the obligations applied to other, smaller platforms, and are additionally responsible for implementing measures to mitigate systemic risks associated with their services and undertaking audits at their own cost. Ireland's business-friendly environment has attracted large multinationals, with the country being the European home of 13 out of 22 VLOPs and VLOSEs currently designated by the Commission and has benefited significantly from their presence. Ireland was the first member state to trigger the crisis response mechanism during the Dublin riots in November 2023 in light of concerns regarding online platforms being used to spread hatred to incite violence, and spread disinformation. This saw the European Commission contact Meta and X to remind them of their obligations under the DSA. And if providers don't comply? Non-compliance with the DSA can result in significant fines to providers. The financial penalty for intermediary service providers that infringe the DSA goes beyond even that imposed by GDPR and can be as severe as handing over 6% of worldwide turnover from the previous financial year. Where the challenges lie A key point in the scope of the legislation is that it applies to the service provided, as opposed to the business providing it. This means that an organisation providing a range of services will have to decipher which category their different services fit into. As the obligations differ based on services provided, it is essential that businesses understand where their services lie so as to avoid penalties. A long-term commitment Adherence to the DSA by...

Ellen and Mary Ann explore the “mirrored door” concept that often holds women back in their careers. Ellen highlights that self-doubt and the pursuit of perfection can hinder career progress. Her advice? Embrace imperfection and take courageous steps forward. It's not about being perfect; it's about being authentic and confident. Breaking free from the limitations of traditional leadership molds is crucial. Ellen encourages women to expand their definition of leadership and embrace their unique qualities. By doing so, they can unlock their full potential and lead with authenticity. Feedback isn't just a formality—it's a powerful tool for personal and professional development. Ellen shares her own journey with feedback and stresses the importance of asking powerful questions to understand how to improve. Effective feedback delivery, infused with positivity and gratitude, is key.  Listening isn't just about hearing words; it's about understanding facts, feelings, and values. Ellen discusses the use of different listening lenses, like gratitude and curiosity, to enhance communication. These skills are invaluable in performance reviews and debriefs, fostering better understanding and collaboration. Resources Ellen Taaffe on the Web | LinkedIn | Twitter Faremouth.com
