A word to the grown-ups: this story told by Jason Buck is not scary, it's very funny – and brilliantly told, but it's does include toilet humour including quite a few sound effects - so, if you want to discourage giggles about ‘p-o-o' this is probably not the story for your children. We also have another fun story this week from Greece called The magical sneeze. In this funny story from Scandanavia, told by Jason Buck, a poor family are asked to donate a barrel of their finest ale to a troll. Would you give a troll a barrel of beer? Well it's just as well this family did, because they were given a magic barrel in return for their kindness, and it's a gift which keeps on giving. But listen on, there's a twist in the tale. Russell Howard’s Wonderbox

US Comedy superstar Michelle Wolf is with us!  And as well as effortlessly funny, Michelle is a wonderful big bag of fascinating contradictions. She's a glamorous comedy star who runs ultramarathons and attends Paris Fashion Week. She also can't think of anything better than getting a hot Wigan-style pie in her hands and face. Seriously mate. You haven't heard love until you've heard Michelle Wolf talk about pies.  It's an absolute romp of an episode; a globe-trotting special covering Michelle's adopted home of Barcelona, her worries for the future of America (seems legit) and a good twenty-minute ode to the British Pie.    Now listen and listen good. If you get the chance to see Michelle live, you've got to take it. One of the very best comedians on the planet, and some of the most insightful and funny material out there. She's written some of your favourite jokes of other big comics.  So have a wander through her website, and find out when she's in your country then go see her live. You'll hunt me down and thank me for the  tip off.  Russell is doin' the do in Canada. He's speakin' the speak in Scandanavia. By which I mean performing his tour show. That's all coming up in the next few months. So get yourself some plane tickets and make a holiday of it. Tickets and dates are all here. It's guaranteed to be both cheaper and funnier than Oasis.   If you're here next week then we'll be here next week.   Slay.   Producer: Dan Atkinson Line Producer: Daisy Knight Exec Producer: James Taylor Composer: Fat Lady Music

Michael and Briyah went to New Hampshire to visit Interlocken (now called Windsor Mountain), for a summer camp reunion. It was a special and meaningful weekend, full of memories, the waterfront, camp food, camp songs, and old and new friends. We were honored to invited there by the current camp owners, Kerry and Jake Labovitz. We reflect on the camp that our dear friend Richard Herman started in 1961 and Michael's experience going on the first ever Crossroads trip to Scandanavia in 1967. We also connect the camp's values to how we're coping during the war in the Middle East. We hope you enjoy this episode.

5-7-24 Tonight at 9PM ET we will be talking with Christopher Clarke, Owner/Meadmaker at Four Fires Meadery and Head Brewer at HEAVY Beer Co. in Toledo, Ohio.  Chris got into making mead after first getting into homebrewing.  In late 2014  he took up homebrewing, a short half a year after first getting into craft beer. His brewing buddy at the time, Mack Garton, and he would brew every single Monday for a year and a half, and somewhere halfway through that they made their first meads. In the next few months he would meet a new friend group and eventually went in on a mead together. Of that group, 4 of them continued further and began making meads as a collective, to share amongst the group as a whole. The 4, Andrew Lynch, Athreya Rajan, Josh Kirk, and Chris would go on to form Four Fires Meadery! In 2015, Chris had his first mead, B. Nektar's Episode 13, and was in love. He jumped in and made his first mead just a month later. That same year, he met the other Four Fires guys at a local craft hideout called the Local. They kept meeting at Chris's place, and continued their confederation of mead makers who wanted to create a meadery. Their first group project that year was Hail Satin. In 2016, they made meads, and homebrew beers, and enter contests, taking some awards and started forming the base business plan, and reaching out to angel investors, and worked on looking for a location.  Chris's enjoyment of craft beer, and meads intertwined with the fun he was having homebrewing, and eventually professionally brewing, seemed to have been accelerants for one another, so in the time between making his first mead, the meadery opening, and now, a LOT has changed.  In 2017, Chris was hired as a production brewer at Maumee Bay Brewing Co. with the intent of revitalizing the portfolio. Later that year, Four Fires signed a lease on their building, and work began immediately on converting the space into a production facility. And the first mead found its way into the tanks in early 2018. As they neared their first release, Four Fires gained visibility amongst mead lovers with them getting some of their pre-production mead out there for people to try.  Join us to check in with Chris and see what Four Fires is up to! Having previously been released by the silkmen after a one year pro deal, Conor pursued his academic qualifcations at Loughborough University which is one of the worlds best academic institutions for high-performance sport. Following the completion of hsi degree and the set-up of his youtube page, he moved to Madrid as part of a year abroad studying. A season of professional football in Spain gave him the taste of football abroad and led him to move to Sweeden, completing two seasons in Scandanavia before returning home to Macclesfield.    Conor's journey is nothing short of remarkable and acts as a reminder that having a career in the game is possible for anyone; it just depends how badly you want it.    If you like this podcast, please leave me a 5* review as it really does help us reach more goalkeepers around the world.    If you would like exclusive insight into the world of the goalkeepers mindset, you can follow the podcast here:    Instagram: @thegoalkeepersmindset Twitter (X): @thegkmindset

Encore: How Did We Get Here?! The History of U.S. Maternity Care

Happy Homebirth

Have you ever been on a drive and say 15 minutes in you think to yourself, “Woah, how did I get here?  You realize you've lost your way and you need to turn it around and go back to the start.    In this week's episode, we'll be taking a look at the past, the history of midwifery and women's care as it pertains specifically to the United States, and delving into some of the reasons that compared to many other westernized countries, women and babies in the US have abysmal outcomes. We'll be sharing just how lost we've become when it comes to maternity care, and how we should really turn this car around.   Janelle Alier is a Certified nurse midwife local to me, and one of the coolest women around.  As she'll explain momentarily, she's worked with moms and babies in a number of capacities, and she recently opened her own homebirth practice, Paris Mountain Midwifery.   Show Notes:   Anciently (ex. Ancient Greece), women were held in high regard and valued as healers.  When the mindset began to change, in a way this was the beginning of the end.  This change corresponded more with religious and theological changes, not the dawn of medicine. Protestants burning “witches”—women healers Much of the knowledge gained over time began was lost with these women   Colonial America- childbirth attendants were women/midwives/family matriarchs   1800s- medical schools are popping up.  Physicians were around, but not trying to be involved at all   19th century—we could charge a fee! Began being interested in birth.  Obstetrics   Midwifery predates medicine: Rachel's midwife is mentioned in Genesis   Varney's Midwifery includes transcripts from Doctors meetings talking about the “midwife problem”   One doctor said the answer was to “educate the ignorants”.  This started a campaign to portray midwives as dirty and uneducated.   Laws began to change—it became illegal for midwives to practice the way they had.  They now had to obtain licensure by the state, which was almost impossible to do.    What's happening to birth at this time?  Physicians recognize that the midwives are more skilled and have better outcomes, but they did not try to work with or learn from the midwives.   Obstetrics in its infancy—it's not going great!  Many deaths in the early years are now attributed to anesthesia   They were giving morphine and narcotics, which we now know doesn't lessen the pain, it just makes you care less… and forget.   Culturally there was not a lot of accountability.  Family members were told that the women didn't survive because “birth is dangerous.”   Late 50's, early 60's- nearly all birth occurred in the hospital   In the late 60's and 70's, there was a small subset of the population who revived the natural childbirth movement, but by that point, the medical model was so mainstream that this movement was considered radical   80's and 90's- c section rates soared   In the last few years, we've realized we've lost our way.  The profession of midwifery is becoming more organized, though there's not tons of money for research, scholarships etc. as there are for medical students.   In South Carolina, Black Grand Midwives were the women delivering babies and taking care of the communities.   What do we do?   More midwives,  more midwives of color, better integration of midwives and the hospital setting  (if a mother needs to transport to the hospital, that should be easy).   In other areas of the Westernized world (Europe, Scandanavia, the UK, Australia, New Zealand etc.) midwifery wasn't wiped out the same way it was in the United States. And their outcomes are much better than ours.    In the UK—there are 5-6 times more midwives than OBs.  Everyone starts with a midwife, and if you need a physician, you get referred by your midwife.  The OBs manage higher risk care while midwives manage low risk birth.   In the US, only 10% of births are attended by midwives.  In Alaska, it's up to 30%, whereas in Arkansas, it's more like 1-2%.    If you overlay a map of birth out comes by state and the integration of midwives… you see that where there are more midwives practicing, there are better birth outcomes.   In the US, we have 1% of planned homebirths in the home.  Most American midwives work in the hospital.  Globally, not only do they have more midwives, but they also have more options.  You can have a midwife at home, or she can follow you into the hospital and continue care (this is not the case in the US).    Episode Roundup  The first thing I want to emphasize is the idea of encouraging the little ladies in our lives to embrace their healing and intuitive natures. What a spiritual gift—And truly, the best way to encourage this is to embrace it ourselves. Isn't it amazing how in a matter of just a few generations our country lost so much birth wisdom? I'm grateful for the resurgence of midwifery, but how heartbreaking to think of where we could be now if circumstances had played out differently.  Perhaps our outcomes wouldn't be so abysmal. And finally, looking towards the future, we have a chance to make things better.  We have the ability to speak out about the inexcusable rates of maternal and infant mortality.  We have the ability to inform other moms of their options, so that they're willing to speak out, too.  On a local level, this can be as small as sharing your birth choices and experiences with others.   This is a perfect moment for me to give a huge thank you to all of the mothers who have so willingly shared their stories on this podcast.  Thank you for inspiring other mothers and showing how beautiful birth can be.

That will become evident the more you listen to this episode. She describes people and relationships as being her currency, her measure of success & fulfillment.I would say that's unsurprising, coming from a female—that she would place so much value on people and relationships, as it's been proven time and time again that men prefer things, objects, working with their hands, that sort of thing. And women tend to veer on the side of people and relationships in their preferences. This has been demonstrated by career choice among among the sexes, even in those countries widely considered most egalitarian, such as those in Scandanavia.Laurel's says one of her deepest values is truth.I'll tell you before we get started she's one of the top 2 or 3 smartest gals I've had on the podcast. In a free-flowing conversation, Deborah Sundahl talks about how she came to travel six months each year to Europe and Scandanavia giving lectures and workshops about women's sexuality--a second career born of a need to promote her book about female ejaculation and the G-spot. She discusses what happens at her hands-on workshops, which serve women in their 40s who are discovering their true sexuality, some for the first time.  Other topics range from a discussion of On Our Backs, the lesbian magazine Deborah co-founded in the 1980s, to AIDS and what women learned from gay men and the BDSM community, to writing a book about female ejaculation and the G-spot--a gamble that went from passion project to a whole new profession as a traveling sex educator and lecturer. About Deborah SundahlDeborah Sundahl (https://deborahsundahl.com/) is a pioneer in female sexuality with 35 years' experience. Her groundbreaking book is Female Ejaculation and the G-Spot (“not your mother's orgasm book”). After initially forming in 1989, Swedish rock outfit Nestor didn't actually release their first album until 2021 - some 32 years later! While this may seem an unusually large time period between formation and debut album... well, what can you say? It is a bloody long time.Nestor went into hibernation early on in their career, a promising career pushed to the side for various reasons that shall remain known only to the band members themselves. While showing glimpses of promise, they were never really a band that grew in popularity after their demise, so, when Nestor decided to reunite earlier this decade the announcement was met with little fanfare or expectation.Which is probably a good thing because it allowed the members to settle back into things at their own pace and rediscover what it was about the band that ignited their passion so long ago. After releasing their debut album Kids In A Ghost Town in 2021, Nestor attracted the interest of major labels and decided to sign with Napalm Records, who in turn decided to re-release the debut album as a deluxe edition with the addition of three new songs. It proved to be a masterstroke to the point that Nestor have now exceeded even their own wildest comeback dreams, with plans afoot to take their music to a global audience.HEAVY caught up with vocalist Tobias Gustavsson to talk about the remarkable journey of Nestor."It's been great," he enthused. "For us, we lived with this album for quite some time since we released it on our own last year but it's great to be able to do it full scale with a distribution partner that can get the album out there. It's also nice to be able to give the fans some additional extras in terms of three new songs."With the band reaching even more markets with the re-release, HEAVY asks Tobias if the feedback is coming more from existing fans who may have upgraded to the deluxe version or from a completely new section of the market."I think so far since we have released it we have gotten quite a lot of new fans," he nodded. "We were able to reach different geographical areas with the new release, but last year when we released the album mainly in Scandanavia we got a lot of feedback and reviews from this part of the world but now, for the last weeks, you can really tell. There's a lot of people from South America, for example, that reviewed the album and have given us great feedback."In the full interview, Tobias runs us through the three new tracks and why they were chosen, the album title and where it comes from, keeping the music on the album true to the original 80s style of the band, what changed to make Nestor reform, future music and its possible direction and more.

For the time being, movie theatres are a thing of the past except in Scandanavia for some reason? Luckily we have Netflix who is continually releasing new movies. This episode we talk about Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia's directorial debut The Platform. Electro and Banno found the film to be deliciously disturbing. Lil' Lil is also back again and she has more than a ‘lil to say about the film and her official nickname. Oz didn't watch this one but was more than high enough to be a part of the conversation.
