We catch up with two time world champ, three time Olympian, and British legend Helen Jenkins about where she’s at in life and sport following the chaos that was 2020. We are inspired by this athlete, mother, and all round incredible woman. We chat all things from the pros and cons of social media to parenting in a pandemic. Plus, dealing with the pressure of being the gold medal favourite at the London Olympics in 2012, her reflections on that day and whether she will ever show her kids the race footage that she has never watched herself. The journey of Helen Jenkins is nothing short of inspiring. She’s come back from having two children and a spinal fusion surgery to return to racing for the joy of it. But, for Helen, the joy of it still results in some extremely quick results. “One of my biggest drivers is having my kids see me race.” "It was never other peoples’ expectations because if I let all that get on top of me I never would have made it to the start line.” Photo by Delly Carr | ITU Media Follow Helen: https://www.instagram.com/heljinx/ * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * SUPPORT WITSUP: Become a Witsup member - www.patreon.com/witsup

On this weeks episode we were lucky enough to get on Olympian Lucy Hall as our guest. Lucy has been in the sport all her life and competed at the London 2012 Olympics for GB and acted as a pilot athlete for Helen Jenkins because of her exceptionally strong swim-bike disciplines. She took us right through her career from junior to senior and has since moved onto the long distance triathlon. As a prominent swimmer she also gave us her insight into the Yonda Ghost 2 wetsuit.
Helen Jenkins is a Two-time triathlon world champion and one of the few athletes to win a World title when it was a one-day event and then when it became a series. She’s represented Great Britain at three Olympics. She’s had a career of extreme highs and tough lows– world titles to injuries that have had her sidelined for more than a year at a time. She continues to show incredible resolve. Her sheer grit, perseverance, and determination have had her reach the top of her sport time and time again.
In this eighth episode of the season of the Her Spirit podcast BBC Breakfast presenter Louise Minchin and BBC Triathlon presenter Annie Emmerson talk to Helen Jenkins MBE.Helen is two-time triathlon world champion (2008 & 2011), one of Britain’s most celebrated triathletes having represented Team GB at the Olympic Games (2008, 2012 & 2016) and Wales at the Commonwealth Games (2006).Helen won her first senior world championships in Vancouver in 2008 and went on to place 21st in Beijing on Olympic debut. After reclaiming the world title in 2011, in a summer which included a commanding victory in the London Olympic test event, Helen then overcame injury to place fifth at the 2012 Olympic Games. Her mantra has seen her through all of her key life moments "You've got to just concentrate on doing what you can do". This mantra helped her get through the 2012 Olympics having not been able to run for three months prior to the games.Another memorable triumph on Gold Coast in 2016 confirmed Helen’s qualification for a third Olympic appearance in Rio, where she finished 19th.Following the birth of her second child, Helen had a lower back fusion surgery in 2018 and has six screws and plates in her spine. This surgery stopped her competing for three years, but Helen was determined to return to professional racing and compete at the highest level. Early this year she came back to triathlon with her first Half Ironman/70.3 distance Finding your WHY? Is so important to Helen, and Helen knows being active is really important and how it makes her feel. Daarnaast een gesprek met Donald Hillebregt, die ingaat op het opmerkelijke bericht dat zijn looptrainer afgelopen weekend de wereld in gooide. This is the inspirational story of a British triathlon legend, Helen Jenkins (https://helenjenkins.co.uk/) . Helen is a 2x ITU World Champion and 3x Olympian and is preparing to make her middle distance debut at Ironman 70.3 Dubai in February. But Helen hasn't raced since 2016. Over the last four years, Helen has had 2 children, but she also feared her triathlon career would be over for ever when she had intensive back surgery in 2018 (https://huubdesign.com/blogs/news/helen-jenkins-presurgery-blog) . I think you'll love the interview, as Helen is really relaxed, funny and brings a refreshing perspective to life as a professional triathlete. You'll hear: *Why she is excited and nervous in equal measure ahead of her first race since 2016 after such a long break *Her fears that she would never stand on a start line again *How she has come to terms with the disappointment of finishing 5th at the London Olympics, when she was one of the favourites to take the win *Why listening to your OWN body is the best piece of advice for new mums and mums-to-be. * If she'll be signing up for Ironman Wales any time soon Like what you heard? FRIEND OF THE SHOW www.komfuel.co.uk (https://www.insidetrishow.com/www.komfuel.co.uk) INTERVIEW TIME LINE* (not the whole episode) Mixture of nerves and excitement about racing for the first time since September 2016. "I know I’m nowhere near the levels of where I was when I was qualifying for the Olympics or winning a World Triathlon series, I’ve just not had enough time, but I’ve been training since Max was a month old , so in 7 months, and I am happy with where I have got to." 01.15 I had to commit to a goal, I had to commit to something. I was just training and doing bits and and pieces. Without a goal, say the kids had had a rough night and I was tired, I’d be like ‘ah, I won’t go swimming this morning’ but with that goal, I have to go and do it. 01.50 I’m nervous about the distance and where my fitness is. I stopped training with Max at 16 weeks and I literally did half an hour a day and it wasn’t every day and I just don’t know where I am in terms of fitness. 03.00 If you went to a World Series and you were really fit and you came 30th, you’d be really disappointed. If you went to a World Series and you were aiming to win and you came third but had a really good performance, you’d still be relatively happy. But with this race and the new distance, if I just finish it, I think I will be relatively happy. To come back from where I have been would be an achievement just to finish it. 03.30 Did you think you would ever get on the start line again? No, not really. After the Rio Support this podcast
Inequality is still deeply entrenched in Britain: there is a persistent gap in early literacy; the attainment gap at the end of secondary school has hardly shifted since 2014 and the better off are nearly 80% more likely to end up in a professional job than those from a working-class background. Produced in partnership with the UK's Ministry of Justice, we discuss the topic of Social Mobility, specifically looking at creating opportunities in the workplace. Helen Jenkins is a two time World Triathlon Champion. In this interview Helen begins by discussing motherhood, her early career and the importance of early career influences such as the legendary coach Chris Jones and world champion Leanda Cave. We delve into her peak performance in San Diego, where Helen produced one of the most dominant triathlon performances in the last few decades, crushing a truly world class field. It is here where she shares the exhilaration of winning the ITU World Triathlon Series in 2008 and 2011. But then things started to unravel as she experienced knee and most significantly, a back injury in the lead up to London 2012. Managing this, Helen explores how she was thinking before, during and after the 2012 attempt that ultimately didn't go her way. It was truly uplifting to hear how Helen reconciled this, to make sense of her amazing achievements and to think about her bigger purpose in life. Show Notes Helen starts by reflecting over the last 12 months. She has experienced some gargantuan changes – having a baby and back surgery in the same year. Steve and Helen explore how Helen made adaptations to training during and after her pregnancy. Shortly after pregnancy, Helen had to make further adaptations after back surgery. 9:30 – Helen's back injury has been her major limiting factor since 2011. This has resulted in challenges to lifestyle and performance. Helen discusses her early career experiences in swimming, important influences, the transition she made into triathlon and early successes. A big turning point in Helen's career was training in Australia with the likes of Chris Jones, Leanda Cave and other world class athletes. Finding out what it takes to be the best. World level success soon followed. Helen discusses the components of her success, finding consistency and her peak performances in 2011 to 2012. Notably, becoming world champion in 2008 and 2011. San Diego in 2011 was one of Helen's best performances across her career. A week after her peak performance in San Diego, injuries to the knee and back surfaced and the fight to get to London 2012 began. Helen didn't train for 2-3 weeks prior to London 2012 and was amazed she was able to stand at the start line. The day before the race she could not run. Helen finished 5th at London 2012 in an incredible achievement. She found this tough to deal with initially but after reflecting on the experience, this is the race she is most proud of in her career. Helen had a large period off to recover, reflect and explore the issues surrounding her back injury with specialists. Helen dug deep to reflect and refocus. The difficulty Helen has in having to train less but smarter in order to achieve performance. Helen found it tough to be upbeat for herself and her stakeholders when the injuries have taken its toll on her. Steve and Helen discuss how the coach-athlete/husband-wife relationship has worked successfully for Helen. An external support system has been key to its success. Having a flexible plan, following process and knowing that you have given 100% are Helen's key messages for dealing with set-backs. What is next for Helen? Her goal is to get back competing and try to think some more about a potential career in performance lifestyle and/or coaching.
