Kilometre 0 Richie and Chris kicks off a seven-part mini series focusing on the 2013 Tour de France. To mark the 100th edition of the race, the Tour headed to Corsica for the grand départ. Lionel Birnie spoke to former teammates Chris Froome and Richie Porte about the race. Froome led Team Sky for the first time having been runner-up to Bradley Wiggins the previous year. Wiggins was somewhat controversially – although perhaps not surprisingly – left out of the line-up a few weeks before the start. There was drama from the start. On day one Froome crashed in the neutralised zone before the race had even started, then the Orica-GreenEdge team bus got stuck under the finish line gantry, almost bringing the entire Tour to a standstill. Froome laid down the gauntlet in the Pyrenees when, for 24 hours, everything looked to be going Sky's way. Then there was a date with Mont Ventoux, a double-ascent of Alpe d'Huez and some nervous moments in the final few days. The rest of the series The 100th Tour, 10 years On is the story of that 2013 race as told by The Cycling Podcast. We've delved into our archive to revisit the first Tour the podcast covered. The remaining six episodes will be released for Friends of the Podcast subscribers from Tuesday to Thursday. Our Kilometre 0 series for the 2023 Tour de France will be available to Friends of the Podcast subscribers. Sign up at thecyclingpodcast.com. It'll soon be safe to go back in the water – which is good news for Lionel after he lost his sunglasses to the Strait of Messina while recording this episode of The Cycling Podcast from Scilla. Lionel joins Daniel Friebe to discuss stage five which, as expected, went the way of the sprinters – although it wasn't without drama along the way. The Giro d'Italia lost one superhero in powder blue yesterday when Miguel Angel Lopez pulled out of the race and another Astana man announced his impending retirement, which will leave a shark-shaped hole in Italian cycling. Vincenzo Nibali, twice a winner of the Giro, arrived in his home town of Messina and announced his plan to retire at the end of the season. We hear from Ciro Scognamiglio about that, we unpick Jumbo-Visma's disappointing day on Etna yesterday with their sports director Addy Engels and ask if Richie Porte is right – is Romain Bardet a great outside bet for this Giro? The shortest stage of the 2022 Giro d'Italia promised to also be one of the most significant - the first of just two time trials in this year's Corsa Rosa and a truth serum for the many pretenders to the maglia rosa. In the latest installment of our post-stage Girovagando podcasts, we hear about a time trial result that few predicted but perhaps should have anticipated. We also discuss the other winners and losers of a stage before which Mathieu van der Poel held a slender lead on general classification. There are interviews with Bun Tulett, Rod Ellingworth and Richie Porte of Ineos Grenadiers, Matteo Sobrero and Damian Howson of Team BikeExchange, and, once again, the hometown hero Attila Valter. Podcasti „Jalgrattapalavik“ märtsikuu esimeseks külaliseks on Eesti maanteekoondise peatreener Jaan Kirsipuu, kes toimetab ühtlasi abistavas rollis koduse profitiimi Ampler-Tartu2024 juures. Teeme hooajale ettevaate.

Ineos Grenadiers had a solid 2021 season with many victories but falling a bit short in the Tour de France with Richard Carapaz taking the 3rd place overall. However this does not take the shine away from a great season dominating the Giro d'Italia with Egan Bernal. They managed to win the Volta a Catalunya with Adam Yates, Tour de Suisse with Richard Carapaz, Tour du Romandie with Geraint Thomas and the Criterium du Dauphine with Richie Porte. Tom Pidcock had an incredible neo-pro season almost winning the Amstel Gold Race.

What a way to start season three of Couching The Mind. With a convincingly big 'bang'. In this episode, Lachie Stuart, founder of 'The Man That Can Project', joins me in conversation via Zoom Chat. Lachie details the purpose of the project, with the mission being to 'to empower men to take ownership of their lives, without the bulls**t'. Whilst highlighting the importance of finding relatability with other guys, with regards to something that you may be struggling with personally. The more relatability there is, the more of a chance that the introverted type guys, will openly speak about there own struggles. Because as men, we love, absolutely love to make excuses, and to shrug away from onus. Another key pointer that Lachie Stuart made, is to be able to identifity when your having a 'bad' day. An example of this instance that was used, was when in the current Tokyo Olympics, Australian cyclist Richie Porte burnt out in the latter stages of the 44km ride. He was asked after his race what caused him to burn out. And to his response he just said that he didn't turn up on the day. And it can be as easy at that. The positives from goal setting, financial self-setting, are also mentioned. If your wanting to attain further self-growth, have a look at the people that you surround yourself around, states Lachie. More offen then not, you tend to mirror-image the actions of your closest mates. The overall message of this episode is to self redefine the once stereotypical depiction of what a man is defined to be. Be the best 'male' version of yourself. Bringing out all the right values that you deem to be of importance. Removing that tough and emotionless stereotype of the 'modern man'.
Stage 15 of the Tour de France was another brutal affair, ending in a brilliant breakaway victory for Jumbo-Visma's Sepp Kuss. Sir Brad and Bernie Eisel look back on an epic day of racing in the Pyrenees in the company of Graham Willgoss. But is Kuss too nice to be a killer on the bicycle? Brad thinks so. Bernie's not so sure: "Riders, when they put their cycling shoes on, put their helmet on, they're absolutely a different person," he says. "Trying to be that leader, and delivering at the moment it's expected? Chapeau." In what could have been a big day for the GC shake-up, Brad says Ineos played into Tadej Pogacar's hands: "They did the job UAE should have been doing, but they don't have the leader to match him and finish it off. They have to change tactics. I'd have liked to have seen G and Richie Porte in the break, and see how that panned out.”There is no doubt who will be happiest heading into the rest day. Especially with the mountain tests ahead – with or without back-up.“Pogacar has the solo ability to do what he likes,” says Brad. “Whereas I really relied on my teammates.” Brad and Bernie agree that, for Mark Cavendish, the Green Jersey is coming home – and more stage wins could well be on their way for the Manx Missile.“Cav's got through the worst of it now, he's going to be fine,” says Brad. “I think we could see him take two more stages, with Paris.”Brought to you by Zwift, where fun is fast. The Bradley Wiggins Show is produced by Pete Burton.
On the day the Tour de France returns to Mont Ventoux we look back at the last visit, in 2016, when chaos ensued and Chris Froome, in the yellow jersey, ended up running up the climb. Helping us piece together what happened on Bastille Day, 2016, are Froome, Richie Porte, Serge Pauwels, Seb Piquet and the stage winner who few would remember, Thomas De Gendt. Kilometre 0 by The Cycling Podcast is supported by Supersapiens: energy management for committed athletes and coaches.
French police continue to find the whereabouts of an oblivious spectator who caused a pileup on the opening stage of the Tour de France. With just over 45 kilometres to go, the peloton passed through a narrow road following a short climb, where a spectator holding a sign stepped out onto the road to try and get on television. The sign which read 'Allez Opi-Omi' ('Go Granny and Grandpa') collected Jumbo-Visma rider Tony Martin, and caused a domino effect through the bunch, with riders either hitting the deck or being caught up behind the crash.Because Martin was near the front of the peloton, only a handful of the 184 riders weren't impacted, with one rider, Jasha Sutterlin, having to abandon as a result of the pileup. The inattentive fan faces possible legal action and up to a year in prison. French prosecutors have confirmed they have opened a criminal enquiry for "deliberately violating safety regulations and so causing injuries that might prevent someone working for up to three months".Tour organisers ASO have also said they would press charges. "We are suing this woman who behaved so badly," race deputy director Pierre-Yves Thouault told AFP."We are doing this so that the tiny minority of people who do this don't spoil the show for everyone."The fan was slammed by fans and riders alike on social media. The riders who escaped unharmed waited for everyone impacted by the crash to rejoin the peloton, but disaster struck again with 7.5 kilometres to go, with a touch of wheels at high speed from a B&B Hotels rider causing another major crash, that saw riders fly off their bikes into a ditch. The second crash caused a major shakeup in the overall race as well, with the surviving riders pushing on to the finish and leaving major contenders in their wake.Amongst the big names to lose significant time was last-year's third place finisher Richie Porte, who lost two minutes and 16 seconds, while top climbers Miguel Angel Lopez (sixth last year) and Emanuel Buchmann (fourth in 2019) lost one minute and 49 seconds. That crash saw two further riders have to abandon the race without completing a stage, and also had an impact on the finish to the stage, with the absence of several contenders and key teammates leaving a reduced group to battle it out.Julian Alaphilippe, the charismatic world champion, took advantage, attacking on the steepest part of the final 3.2 kilometre climb, and impressively holding on to take victory by eight seconds, and claim the first yellow jersey.Amongst a group of 20 riders eight seconds down were the two race favourites - the Slovenian duo of Tadej Pogacar and Primoz Roglic - with Roglic taking third place to snare four bonus seconds. Also in the group was former champion Geraint Thomas, while his teammate and fellow top contender Richard Carapaz arrived five seconds further back. However, with many star riders crossing the line battered and bruised, the impacts of the two crashes - and one fan's actions - are likely to linger throughout the tour.Stage twoTour de France debutant Mathieu van der Poel snatched the race leader's yellow jersey with a win in the second stage overnight.Van der Poel is the grandson of Tour great Raymond Poulidor who died in 2019. Poulidor took part in 14 Tours from 1962-76 but never wore the yellow jersey.Van der Poel attacked in the sharp climb leading to the finish line at Mur-de-Bretagne to drop world champion Julian Alaphilippe. Van der Poel sealed his maiden stage win ahead of last year's champion Tadej Pogacar. Primoz Roglic was third. Alaphilippe had led after the first stage.LISTEN ABOVE
It was a chaotic and crash-filled first stage of the 2021 Tour de France, with no little controversy too. Julian Alaphilippe rode clear to take the first yellow jersey of the 2021 race but the big talking points were two massive crashes which caused "carnage" in the peloton.A spectator caused the biggest pile-up the day by trying to pose for the television cameras with a sign, causing chaos and a number of injuries as most of the peloton lay strewn across the road - and it's fair to say Brad wasn't impressed...Chris Froome came down in the second big crash to bring any GC hopes he had to an end after only one stage, although Geraint Thomas avoided any danger even as Ineos team-mates Richie Porte and Tao Geoghegan Hart were caught up in the chaos. We pick through the bones of a very eventful opening day - and reflect on Demi Vollering's superb win at Le Course. Meanwhile, Brad discusses Mark Cavendish's return to the race where he has won 30 stages and explains why talk of Eddy Merckx's record is a distraction. We will have podcasts for you almost every day of the 2021 race as Brad and Graham kick off Le Tour in Bath before heading out to France, where Brad will be back on a bike for the final stretch. If you enjoyed this episode, please rate and review us on your podcast platform of choice. The Bradley Wiggins Show is produced by Pete Burton.
