Loose Ends embraces the great outdoors this week at the Kendal Mountain Festival. Stuart talks to festival patron and bestselling writer Robert Macfarlane about his "mountain DNA" and unusual walking snack. Broadcaster and writer Louise Minchin loves a mountain too. Having put aside the extreme working practice of rising at 3am for Breakfast TV she now loves a triathlon, a free-dive at night under ice or the extreme experience that is learning to cook a soufflé from an online video for Celebrity Masterchef. Space scientist Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock - who is such a star there is even a Barbie doll in her image - on being inspired by the night sky, be that incredible telescope images or The Clangers as she was as a child. And for a counterpoint approach we have a relative newcomer to the country, the comedian Chris Cantrill who describes himself as a "rural imposter" and hosts a podcast about adapting to the northern wilds by competitive leek growing and donning a cape. Plus music from Lake District singer songwriter Olivia Fern and Cumbrian-born indie artist Melanie Baker, who loves mountains so much she once filmed a music video at the top of one. My guest today is author, endurance athlete and ex BBC breakfast presenter Louise Minchin. Louise is, of course, best known for her twenty year stint on BBC Breakfast's sofa but she has also been main news anchor on the BBC News, presented The One Show and participated in a host of reality TV shows including I'm a Celebrity get me out of here. Since leaving the sofa, she has chaired the Women's Prize for Fiction, honed her skills as an endurance athlete (she qualified for the Great Britain Age-Group Triathlon Team in 2015 for the World Triathlon Championships in Chicago, and completed the Norseman triathlon - she doesn't do things by halves!) and turned her hand to writing. Louise's latest book is a heartstopping thriller called Isolation Island, which takes ten celebrities and dumps them in a derelict monastery on a remote scottish island. Think I'm A Celebrity meets Traitors with a splash of Big Brother and you're halfway there! Louise joined me to talk about the importance of putting women of all ages centre stage and how she built a new career off the breakfast TV sofa. We also discussed how perimenopause robbed her of herself, the power of adventure, how she learnt to love her body for what it can do not how it looks and why she wants to encourage more women to take a risk in midlife. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Isolation Island by Louise Minchin and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. About the book: Fearless, Adventures with Extraordinary Women JOIN LOUISE MINCHIN ON 17 EXHILARATING ADVENTURES WITH TRAILBLAZING WOMEN WHO ARE BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS, SMASHING RECORDS AND CHALLENGING STEREOTYPES. 'To get to the heart of who these women are… I decided to do it the way that I know best, by taking part, spending time right beside them to experience the things they love.' Driven to bring more attention to female stories of courage and endeavour, Louise Minchin pushes herself to the extreme and embarks on thrilling endurance adventures with trailblazing women. She freedives under the ice in the dark in Finland with Cath, the first woman to swim a mile in the Antarctic Circle; she cycles across Argentina with Mimi, one of the world's most famous female endurance runners; and she swims from Alcatraz with Anaya and Mitali, two young sisters who have braved the shark-infested waters over 70 times. With her natural empathy and sense of humour, Louise forms close bonds with 18 incredible women. She explores what drives them and how they find the resilience and determination to go on despite life's setbacks. Lizzie overcame a life-threatening illness and now paddleboards whilst cleaning up the planet with her community; Rhian set up a charity in the face of grief and fundraises through hikes; and Zee took up rugby alongside her busy nursing career and motherhood. Liz and Michelle chat to tv presenter and author Louise Minchin about dealing with empty nest syndrome. Louise shares her own emotional journey as both her daughters left home for university, including the grief she felt at their absence. She explains how she coped by filling her time with new challenges, becoming an endurance athlete and author. Louise talks about pushing herself out of her comfort zone by swimming through shark infested waters to Alcatraz, ice diving, and other adventures with ordinary women doing extraordinary things that she chronicles in her book Fearless. She shares the importance of celebrating what your body can do, not how it looks. Louise offers inspiration on how to be fearless in trying new things and reinventing yourself in midlife after your kids leave home. KEY TAKEAWAYS Louise was unprepared for the grief and loss she felt when her daughters first left home for university. She describes it as a rollercoaster - you're no longer in control as a parent when they choose to come back. Louise advises allowing yourself to feel sadness, but also filling your time with new challenges and adventures. She pushed herself by training for triathlons, swimming to Alcatraz, and writing two books, including Fearless. A key message is to celebrate what your body can do, not focus on how it looks. Louise reinvented her career, now calling herself a writer - it's inspiring to pivot even later in life. Her advice is to set goals, take small steps out of your comfort zone, and not let fear of failure hold you back. BEST MOMENTS "I was really... extraordinarily unprepared for her leaving home." "You've got to go with a different kind of rollercoaster. One where you are not in control as a parent anymore." "I'm proud of what my body can do, not about what it looks like." "I walked in going, I'm a writer. And that's so exciting." "Don't be afraid to fall flat on your face." If you enjoyed this episode, please rate, and review it on your podcast platform. "The Good Listening To" Podcast with me Chris Grimes! (aka a "GLT with me CG!")
Louise Minchin has a wonderful story to tell and she tells it very well. Born in a typhoon in Hong Kong some 55 years ago, one of her earliest memories as a young child is of the water in her bath moving as her tower block shook in gale-force winds! To this day, Louise finds storms exciting…You can also watch/Listen to Louise here: https://vimeo.com/chrisgrimes/louiseminchinHer grandparents had a house at the foot of a mountain in Spain, which she fondly remembers visiting year after year. Louise loved the country, the water to swim in and the language itself. Small wonder she chose to study Spanish at St Andrew's University, where coincidentally Louise also won a scholarship early ‘gap year' in Argentina. Here her Spanish became fluent, if not strictly Castilian. Here Louise also read the iconic novel ‘100 years of Solitude' by Gabriel Garcia Marquez - in its original Spanish! This fortuitous year's experience helped Louise gain a better Degree than her tutors originally expected! Armed with her academic qualifications, Louise joined the BBC as a Production Assistant. Practically speaking, this involved providing early morning alarm-calls for the presenters on the Today Programme on Radio 4 and making tea or coffee for them on their arrival in the Studio. Louise then decided to do a Diploma Course in Journalism. She became a professional writer under the expert guidance of a great mentor by the name of Neil Dunwoody. This, she says, was “life-changing”. Louise's career took off in style: for 20 years she was reading news and then presenting BBC TV's flagship Breakfast Show. She did her last ‘Breakfast' two years ago - but the adventures never stopped. She married successfully and now has two daughters, the first of whom arrived by emergency Caesarean section, followed in dangerously quick succession by acute appendicitis. Louise's real ‘near death' experience means that she no longer ‘sweats the small stuff'. She now describes herself as an ‘Endurance Athlete' and has represented her country in that capacity. Louise is also an accomplished author. Her first book is based on her own personal experience and is entitled ‘Dare To Try.' Her latest book is called ‘Fearless Adventures with Extraordinary Women.' It does what it says on the cover, recording the diverse real life adventures of 18 extraordinary women. Louise invites you to hear her speak about it and buy copies of it for yourself, your family and your friends. She did not work with the one and only John Humphrys without learning to speak your mind. But always with a smile!Tune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'. Without Louise Minchin, there would be no Effin Hormones! Louise is a TV presenter, journalist and author. She's well known in the UK for being one of the presenters of BBC Breakfast, a job she'd had for years until announcing her departure in 2021. Louise was holding down that high profile job while going through perimenopause. At the time, she kept asking the production team to cover menopause - because she knew it would get a big response from viewers. In the end, her producer decided to cover it - for a whole week! Louise told her story as a part of it. Louise's openness had a huge impact on both the audience - and producer Helen, who came up with the idea for Effin Hormones after seeing the impact that BBC Breakfast's Menopause Week was having. You'll hear all about that, plus you'll find out why Louise is so passionate that women experiencing menopause get the right information and support. Hopefully you'll also get some inspiration on taking up sport too. Louise credits her new passion with getting her through some trying times. Connect with Effin Hormones.
