Ep. 73 - The Dawn Chorus (Part 1)

Bill and Steve look into the Dawn Chrous, that early morning explosion of bird song that refuses to let you sleep in. And, for all you Daniel-haters out there, this episode is 100% Daniel-free (but Bill and Steve are both crying on the inside. We miss Daniel buckets, and we're betting you do, too). This episode was recorded on April 10, 2025 at the California Road Rereation Area in Orchard Park, NY.Episode Notes and LinksAre there orioles in China? Bill shared the classic Chinese poem from the Tang Dynasty (~600–900 CE) - the one called "Feelings on Awakening from Drunkenness on a Spring Day" by Li Bai, and Steve wondered: Are there Orioles in China. Turns out that, yes, there are, and they're more oriole-y (?) than ours! That's because our New World orioles, like the one we're betting you're thinking of right now (the well-known orange and black Baltimore Oriole) belong to the family Icteridae and are not closely related to Old World orioles. Instead, they're closely related to blackbirds and meadowlarks, fellow family members in the Icteridae. Old world orioles in Europe and Asia, on the other hand, belong to the family Oriolidae. Our orioles were named after them because of the similarities to the old world orioles in behavior, diet, and appearance, but, despite the similarities – these families are not closely related. The similarities evolved independently due to convergent evolution (when species develop similar traits in response to similar environmental pressures). So, yes, Steve, there are orioles in China, but it's tough to say for sure which oriole Li Bai heard in his drunken stupor because Birds of China reports seven species found throughout the country, and, as we pointed out, given Li Bai's state, maybe the bird was only in his head. Is there a Thorpe's Law? When Bill mentioned William Thorpe, a British biologist and ornithologist, Steve thought he recalled there was an ecological law or concept credited to Thorpe. Bill scoured the Internet, but the closest thing he could find was Taylor's power law, an empirical law in ecology that relates the variance of the number of individuals of a species per unit area of habitat to the corresponding mean by a power law relationship. If that made sense to you, Bill asks if you could kindly explain it to him. bird Can someone look at a sound spectrograph and identify the bird? The guys wondered if a sound researcher looking at sound spectrographs (visual representations of bird song) could get good enough to know what bird they're looking at just by the visual? An internet search was inconclusive- a lot of sites talk about using the spectrographs as an aid to get better at understanding and ID'ing bird song, but we couldn't find any that specifically addressed this question. We've emailed some bird biologists and we'll update these notes when we hear back!Social Monogamy vs. Sexual Monogamy: Steve talked about how he'd heard that even in species that bond for life, members of the pair will still seek out other mates. True? First, let's make a distinction that Steve alluded to in the episode: that is, social vs. sexual monogamy. In birds, "monogamy" often refers to a social bond, where a pair stays together and raises offspring together. However, this doesn't necessarily mean they are sexually faithful to each other. So, socially monogamous doesn't equal sexual monogamy. Looking in to this, we landed on a passage in The Sibley Guide to Bird Life and Behavior – a birder's bible if there is one – it reports: “90 percent of all bird species are socially monogamous, but some level of cheating is common. Cheating, or “extra-pair copulation” also occurs, but rarely, among birds of sexually monogamous, mated-for-life species, “but is not yet known how many species engage in extra-pair copulations, since many species remain to be studied. However, it appears that genetic monogamy may be the exception rather than the rule among birds.” Sponsors and Ways to Support UsGumleaf Boots, USA (free shipping for patrons)Thank you to Always Wandering Art (Website and Etsy Shop) for providing the artwork for many of our episodes.Support us on Patreon.Check out the Field Guides merch at our Teespring store. Clement Bonnet discusses his novel approach to the ARC (Abstraction and Reasoning Corpus) challenge. Unlike approaches that rely on fine-tuning LLMs or generating samples at inference time, Clement's method encodes input-output pairs into a latent space, optimizes this representation with a search algorithm, and decodes outputs for new inputs. This end-to-end architecture uses a VAE loss, including reconstruction and prior losses. Cash Is King with Peter W. Kingma   In this episode of The Profit Answer Man, we sit down with Peter W. Kingma, author of CASH IS KING and leader of Ernst & Young LLP's working capital practice in the Americas. With over 30 years of experience advising global companies on all things cash management, Peter joins us to discuss why cash flow is the true backbone of business success and how business owners can shift their focus from profit-and-loss statements to developing a “cash culture.” Peter provides actionable strategies for managing the five steps from order-to-cash, improving collections, and boosting cash flow through better customer management. We also dive into the importance of supply chain management and discuss how creating a “Cash Leadership Office” can transform the financial health of any organization. In this episode, you will learn: Why Building a Cash Culture is Essential: Peter explains why focusing solely on profit-and-loss statements can lead businesses astray, and how a cash-centered approach ensures long-term financial stability. The Order-to-Cash Process: Learn the five key steps in the order-to-cash process that businesses must optimize to maintain healthy cash flow and avoid liquidity crunches. Strategies for Effective Collections: Peter shares five tips for managing customer relationships and disputes to improve collections and cash conversion cycles. Supply Chain Management for Cash Flow: Discover how better supply chain management can keep your cash flowing smoothly, even during challenging economic times. Creating a Cash Leadership Office: How establishing a dedicated leadership team to focus on cash flow can enhance your bottom line and allow for sustainable business growth. Key Takeaways: Cash Over Profits: Even large companies struggle to manage cash effectively. Business owners must understand that cash flow is more critical than simply showing a profit. Sales ≠ Profit, and Profit ≠ Cash: Peter emphasizes that even profitable sales can be harmful if cash isn't collected on time. Businesses must prioritize cash flow management alongside sales and profit. Avoiding Cash Flow Pitfalls: Common mistakes, such as offering long payment terms or failing to consider the financial impact of customer service agreements, can cripple cash flow. Aligning Teams with Cash Goals: Often, sales teams are incentivized based on revenue, not cash collection. Aligning incentives with cash goals can prevent cash shortfalls and improve business sustainability. Bio: Peter W. Kingma is the author of CASH IS KING and leads the working capital practice for Ernst & Young LLP in the Americas. With over 30 years of experience advising global companies, Peter specializes in cash management and working capital strategies across industries such as manufacturing, consumer products, aerospace, and defense. He has contributed to publications like CFO Magazine and CNBC, and is passionate about helping businesses build a cash-centric culture. Conclusion: Cash is the lifeblood of any business, and without careful management, even the most successful organizations can run into trouble. In this episode, Peter Kingma provides valuable insights into how business owners, large or small, can develop a cash-focused mindset and manage their operations for long-term financial health. Today on the podcast, Peter Kingma joins Bradley to talk cash. "Cash is king," says business expert Peter Kingma. Without it, your business won't survive. You need cash to pay your bills, develop new products, hire additional employees, and so on. With cash, you can take advantage of growth opportunities. If you have too much debt and too little cash, then your business is vulnerable anytime the economy shifts.Kingma has thirty years of experience helping companies drive operational resilience with better cash management. In his new book, CASH IS KING, he offers his unparalleled perspective on the necessity of developing a “cash culture.”Get his book at https://www.amazon.com/Cash-King-Maintain-Liquidity-Opportunity/dp/1119983355In His New Book CASH IS KING, Business Expert Peter Kingma Provides A Framework for Building Organizational Liquidity.“Few people outside of senior finance executives really understand the importance of cash in their businesses,” writes expert Peter Kingma in his new book CASH IS KING: Maintain Liquidity, Build Capital, and Prepare Your Business for Every Opportunity (Wiley; May 2024). With over thirty years of experience helping companies drive operational resilience with better cash management, Kingma has an unparalleled perspective on the necessity of developing a “cash culture.”“Revenue is important, but cash is king,” he explains. “In many companies, there is far too often a fixation on revenue alone. Profitable businesses can go out of business without adequate cash. Good ideas can't get launched, new products can't be developed, markets cannot be expanded without cash. There needs to be a positive balance between cash inflow and outflow.”CASH IS KING is not a typical book about finance. Kingma illustrates his advice by telling the story of Owens, Inc., a fictional, mid-sized manufacturing company. Quarter after quarter, as Owens sales grow, the company's CFO becomes increasingly concerned about cash flow. The business is now more complex. Interest rates are rising, inventory is growing faster than sales, the demand for capital improvements is at an all-time high, and customers are paying more slowly than ever.Join us at The 2 Day MBA, August 6th-7th 2024. These strategies not only streamline financial processes but also fortify businesses against market uncertainties, ensuring robust financial health and agility. --- Crown Your Cash with Peter Kingma Good day, dear listeners, Steve Preda here with the Management Blueprint Podcast and my guest today is Peter Kingma, the head of the Working Capital Practice for EY Parthenon in the Americas and author of Cash is King: Mastering Cash Flow Management with Peter Kingma. Peter, welcome to the show. Thank you, glad to be here. Yeah, well, I'm glad you're here because actually, believe it or not, we are well into over 200 episodes, but we never actually addressed the king, which is cash, which is a big omission, I realize, and now we're going to make up for it. So, before we jump in on that, I'd like to ask you, what is your personal Why? What is it that gets you out of bed every morning? I'm curious, Steve. That's my personal Why. I love to solve problems. Some might say that's because I have a short attention span that I like to go from problem to problem, but I love to solve problems. And the past 30 years of my professional career, I've been helping companies. Now, we'll talk about small businesses in this discussion, but admittedly big businesses for me, on a day-to-day basis, but helping them deal with cash and liquidity. And what I love, Steve, about what I do is I can measure the results. So I can see at the end of the day, I can see the benefits. And I'm very proud of the fact that my work helps some very iconic companies stay in business. And so there are people that are employed today because of decisions that they've made. And, yeah, that's my why. I love solving problems. And I like sort of tackling big questions. Okay. Well, let's tackle the biggest question of all is why revenue is not the same as cash. Yeah, let's start at the beginning. So, I think in business we understand revenue and profit fairly well, but we don't always understand the difference between that and cash. So if you think about revenue, let's say we sell something, but if we haven't gotten paid for it, and we don't have, so to speak, the cash in our pocket, then we don't have the ability to pay our bills. And so, Steve, if you will, let me take you back in time to when I was just out of college and kind of a silly example of this, but I think that it kind of grounds itself really well. When I was just out of college, I was living paycheck to paycheck. And fortunately, my employer paid me on the 1st and the 15th of every month. So, I knew when I was going to get paid. And fortunately, my landlord didn't come knocking on my door random days of the month asking for rent, I knew when that was when my bills were due as well. So even if I had, even if they gave me, you know, a little bit more money or a little bit less in any given month, I had to say I knew exactly when the revenue was coming in, when the cash was coming in, and when my bills were to be paid. So, I think in many ways, we understand that in our household economics, but then we get into business and sometimes I think we get confused because we start to confuse and chase revenue and revenue alone and forget that it's the cash that pays the bills. It's the cash that you use to buy new equipment to invest.

Hungarian athlete Márk Dévay, a former World Aquathlon champion, was also up there, as was WTCS leader heading into today, Vasco Vilaca.   By the end of the swim, things where more of the same at the front, with Dévay keeping things honest as he lead out of the water, with Riddle, Schoeman, Coninx, Vilaca and a number of others close by. Most importantly, Alex Yee and Hayden Wilde, two of the pre-race favourites, were just +0:15 down out of the water and in perfect position.   Further back, Olympic champion Kristian Blummenfelt was just over half a minute behind at the back of the second group, with compatriot Gustav Iden ten seconds further back at +0:47 and Richard Murray of the Netherlands the last out of the water a minute down after Spaniard Mario Mola withdrew.   Bike – Blummenfelt left stranded Out of transition, there was a mad scramble to make the front pack, as two dozen athletes, including Wilde, made it into the front pack, with the second group featuring the likes of Blummenfelt. The chase pack, sensing danger, worked hard over the first lap to close the gap, but was unable to, with the gap then quickly blowing out.   After three laps, the gap was well over half a minute, with Wilde drilling the pace at the front of the lead group, as the chase group struggled to make back any time despite featuring the firepower of the likes of Blummenfelt and Swiss Simon Westermann, who on multiple occasions tried to drag the chasers along.   By halfway, the gap was up to +0:50 with the front pack showing no signs of slowing, as Belgian Martin Van Riel, returning from a long period out with injury, returned to the front of a WTCS bike pack for the first time in close to a year.   Off the bike, the gap back to Blummenfelt and the rest of the chase pack was +1:15, with the front pack, thanks to the hard work of the likes of Van Riel and Wilde, enjoying a comfortable buffer coming into transition.   WTCS Cagliari 2023 Results Saturday May 27 2023 – ELITE MEN 1.5km / 38k / 10k   1. Beaugrand ran, dived and swam away from the rest in the choppy sea before Maya Kingma and Vittoria Lopes took over, particularly on the second lap.   Lopes was first to hit the timing mat after 1500m in 19:39 while Summer Rappaport, Beaugrand, Kingma and Sophie Coldwell and just about everybody else except Taylor Knibb, were bunched up with her. Potter and Taylor-Brown were 9th and 10th out, but there was really nothing separating them as they all burst into transition.   Bike – All aboard the Knibb train The short transition was executed cleanly and quickly by everyone and a huge bunch left transition. The pace looked to be on from the start, but Knibb overcame a 30-second deficit from the swim and caught them by the third of 10 laps.   She hit the front, blew the pack apart on the fourth lap and it was a rare moment that she wasn't on the front for the rest of the cycle leg. The British trio of Taylor-Brown, Coldwell and Waugh rode in the front group of 11 athletes, but Potter and Beaugrand were dropped.   By the time the leaders hit T2, the group had put 1 min 44 seconds into the chase group, which contained Potter and Beaugrand.   Advertisements Run – GTB takes control The group of 11 leaders were separated by no more than a second coming into transition, but it wasn't long before Taylor-Brown hit the front along with Knibb and Emma Lombardi.   By the third of four laps, Taylor-Brown hit the front and stayed there to cross the line in front to claim another excellent victory in 2022.   She said: “I just tried to run my own race and tried to stay in contact with that bike group. Taylor made it really hard but it worked in our favour because we got a really good gap.   “I forgot how hard she rides, but it's good, she really gets the group going and we're all trying to hang on to her wheel.   “I started speaking to the girls on the first two laps (of the run), ‘lets work together because this could be the podium.'”   On extending her Series lead over Flora Duffy, who wasn't there today, she said: “It's all going to come down to Abu Dhabi now.”   Lombardi was delighted to win silver, her first ever WTCS medal, she said: “I'm really enjoying racing against the best in the world, it's fantastic.”   Beaugrand ran up to eighth place and moved in to third position overall in the Series. Potter finished 10th, which moves her down one place to fourth in the Series.   WTCS Cagliari 2022 Results Saturday October 8 2022 – ELITE WOMEN 1.5km / 38k / 10k   1. Gold secured Duffy the title, the race and Series silver went to Taylor-Brown, an excellent first podium for Lena Meissner in third. Another eventful fourth place finish for Taylor Knibb after coming off on the bike secured her the Series bronze.   “I'm really, really proud of this one,” said a beaming Duffy afterwards. “It was a difficult start to the year for me coming out of the Olympics and Covid and everything and it took a lot of work to get my mind back into it so I'm thrilled. I smiled a few times when it was just me and Georgia… I feel like she brings me to another level. We don't really give each other an inch and I just wanted to stay safe because it's super hot out there. When I got a little bit of a gap on the third lap of the run it was a little sooner than I anticipated but I thought; ‘well, gotta go now!'   Knibb and Duffy spearhead swim With temperatures hitting 33 degrees and shade at a premium out on the course, the yellow hats of the top-ranked athletes filed in and on to the right of the pontoon on the edge of Yas Bay. Flora Duffy and Georgia Taylor-Brown didn't get the best of starts in the water, but were soon digging in to hit the first buoy without any trouble Taylor Knibb on the front.   It was the American out first at the turn with Duffy on her feet from Beth Potter, Vittoria Lopes and Taylor-Brown out in fifth, and that was largely how it stayed for the second 750m lap, Summer Rappaport working her way to the front as the six came up and into transition.   German duo Laura Lindemann and Lisa Tertsch and Netherlands' Maya Kingma were right there too, but Duffy was slick through transition and away on the 40km first, Taylor-Brown and Potter in hot pursuit, Knibb losing some ground on the six chasing the Bermudian.   9-Deep bike pack leads It wouldn't take long for Knibb to catch on, Germany's Lena Meissner too, and behind the front nine, Taylor Spivey and Kirsten Kasper were riding together 23 seconds back, Cassandre Beaugrand fronting another 11 athletes giving chase but now 54 seconds off the leaders after three laps of nine.   Up front, Knibb was prodding and probing, looking to work an opening from wide positions so the Series leaders and championship chasers had to keep fully alert for any sign of an American charge as well as for the tight and technical corners.   Duffy then started to test those around her, a mini-break not sticking, the leaders stretching out then coming together repeatedly, though Lindemann fell off the pace to join those behind, now including Tertsch after the German came off but 90 seconds back after five laps.   Duffy, Knibb and Taylor-Brown continued to share duties out front, Potter having issues on lap six and next to fall off the leaders and start to ride alone, 20 seconds back.   Knibb fall halts progress More drama at the end of lap seven saw Knibb's wheel slide out taking Kingma with her, Lopes and Meissner just able to avoid trouble and stay with Duffy and Taylor-Brown up ahead. Knibb wrestled with her chain for what felt like an eternity but still managed to ride back up to Kingma at the bell, but there was now suddenly just four main contenders for the medals.   With the bikes racked, there was no surprise to see the two title-chasers heading out together once more and the best in the world ran together for two laps, the title and an epic season coming right down to a 5km foot race to the line.   Duffy books date with triathlon destiny It was coming out onto lap three that Duffy asked the big question, and as she accelerated up the small hill and back out into the heart of the course, it quickly became clear that Taylor-Brown had no answer. Soon the Bermudian was out of sight, looking undaunted by the heat, fully focussed on the fourth title she slowly realised was hers.   Taylor-Brown finished with the silver at the end of an exhausting campaign, Meissner with a gutsy first ever WTCS podium ahead of Knibb. Leonie Periault (FRA) ran her way into fifth, Lopes hung on for an excellent sixth ahead of Spivey, Emma Lombardi (FRA), Miriam Casillas Garcia (ESP) and Cassandre Beaugrand rounding out the top 10.   “I gave it everything I had today,” said Georgia Taylor-Brown. “It's been a hard few months and I've tried to forget about it all but i'm really proud of myself out there today and giving it everything and doing all I could. We were battling it out to the end and I wouldn't have it any other way, and I don't think she would. I'm still learning in every race and I still want that world title one day.”   “I can't believe that, I need a few days to let it sink in,” said a thrilled Meissner. “It was tough but I got here 10 days ago and had good heat prep and there was lots of water and ice out there. I just tried to stay calm and confident and it just worked perfectly for me today.”   “I'm pretty shocked, there were a lot of ups and downs in the season and today,” said Knibb. “The corner was entirely my fault, I wasn't full processing things at that point, it was a bit of user error and I'm sorry to Maya and Vittoria and Lena behind me for that. Hopefully I will be back here in March to go again.”   Women's Results Pos First Name Last Name YOB Country Start Num Time Swim 1500m T1 Bike 40km T2 Run 10km 1 Flora Duffy 1987  BER 2 01:53:24 00:19:20 00:01:13 00:59:58 00:00:29 00:32:27 2 Georgia Taylor-Brown 1994  GBR 1 01:54:28 00:19:25 00:01:11 00:59:54 00:00:26 00:33:33 3 Lena Meißner 1998  GER 26 01:55:59 00:19:30 00:01:10 00:59:51 00:00:27 00:35:03 4 Taylor Knibb 1998  USA 5 01:56:40 00:19:26 00:01:18 01:00:20 00:00:31 00:35:07 5 Leonie Periault 1994  FRA 34 01:56:51 00:20:00 00:01:12 01:02:22 00:00:26 00:32:54 6 Vittoria Lopes 1996  BRA 27 01:56:59 00:19:24 00:01:16 00:59:53 00:00:31 00:35:57 7 Taylor Spivey 1991  USA 7 01:57:44 00:19:41 00:01:11 01:02:03 00:00:28 00:34:23 8 Emma Lombardi 2001  FRA 14 01:57:50 00:19:46 00:01:10 01:02:30 00:00:23 00:34:02 9 Miriam Casillas García 1992  ESP 10 01:57:56 00:20:21 00:01:10 01:01:55 00:00:24 00:34:08 10 Cassandre Beaugrand 1997  FRA 6 01:58:13 00:19:29 00:01:12 01:02:53 00:00:26 00:34:15   Men's Results Pos First Name Last Name YOB Country Start Num Time Swim 1500m T1 Bike 40km T2 Run 10km 1 Léo Bergere 1996  FRA 3 01:44:14 00:18:09 00:01:04 00:54:57 00:00:22 00:29:44 2 Morgan Pearson 1993  USA 62 01:44:25 00:18:35 00:01:02 00:55:13 00:00:23 00:29:15 3 Jelle Geens 1993  BEL 4 01:44:34 00:18:43 00:01:10 00:54:53 00:00:22 00:29:28 4 Alex Yee 1998  GBR 2 01:44:37 00:18:33 00:01:03 00:55:12 00:00:27 00:29:24 5 Matthew Hauser 1998  AUS 10 01:44:51 00:18:33 00:01:06 00:55:11 00:00:21 00:29:42 6 Hayden Wilde 1997  NZL 1 01:45:13 00:18:15 00:01:04 00:55:31 00:00:24 00:30:01 7 Vincent Luis 1989  FRA 5 01:45:19 00:17:54 00:01:08 00:55:09 00:00:25 00:30:45 8 Kristian Blummenfelt 1994  NOR 44 01:45:19 00:18:27 00:01:09 00:55:10 00:00:26 00:30:10 9 Joao Silva 1989  POR 16 01:45:23 00:18:48 00:01:06 00:54:56 00:00:24 00:30:10 10 Matthew Mcelroy 1992  USA 27 01:45:26 00:18:48 00:01:04 00:54:56 00:00:33 00:30:06   What's New in the 303: 353 million verdict Michael Ingles v Ryan Montoya 719 Ride joins the SUAREZ Gran Fondo National Series December 7, 2022 Colorado Springs event becomes qualifying event for US Gran Fondo National Championships Gettysburg, PA – December 7, 2022 /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – Gran Fondo National Series is proud to announce the 719 Ride as a partner event in the 2023 SUAREZ Gran Fondo National Series.
