fWotD Episode 2701: 2023 World Snooker Championship Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 26 September 2024 is 2023 World Snooker Championship. The 2023 World Snooker Championship (officially the 2023 Cazoo World Snooker Championship) was a professional snooker tournament that took place from 15 April to 1 May 2023 at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, England, the 47th consecutive year that the World Snooker Championship was staged at the venue. The qualifying rounds took place from 3 to 12 April 2023 at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. The 15th and final ranking tournament of the 2022–23 snooker season, it was organised by the World Snooker Tour and sponsored for the first time by car retailer Cazoo. It was broadcast in the United Kingdom by the BBC, in Europe by Eurosport, and elsewhere in the world by Matchroom Sport and other broadcasters. The total prize fund was £2,395,000, of which the winner received £500,000.Ronnie O'Sullivan was the defending champion, having defeated Judd Trump 18–13 in the 2022 final. He made a record 31st Crucible appearance, surpassing the 30 appearances by Steve Davis, and reached a record-extending 21st quarter-final—also becoming the first player to compete in 100 matches at the Crucible—but lost 10–13 to Belgian player Luca Brecel. Crucible debutants at the event were Fan Zhengyi, Jak Jones, Pang Junxu, Si Jiahui, and Wu Yize. Si, aged 20, became the first debutant to reach the semi-finals since Andy Hicks at the 1995 event and the youngest player to do so since O'Sullivan at the 1996 event. Brecel came from 5–14 behind in the semi-finals to defeat Si 17–15, the first time a player had won a match at the Crucible after trailing by nine frames. Brecel went on to defeat Mark Selby 18–15 in the final, winning his first world title, first Triple Crown title, and fourth ranking title. He became the sport's first world champion from mainland Europe. The event's main stage produced 90 century breaks. For the second time, after the 2008 event, two maximum breaks occurred at the main stage of the tournament: Kyren Wilson made a maximum in his first-round match against Ryan Day, and Selby became the first player to make a maximum in a World Championship final. O'Sullivan made both his 1,200th century in professional competition and his 200th Crucible century at the event. The qualifying rounds produced another 135 centuries, including a 115 break by Ng On-yee, the highest by a woman in the tournament's history. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:51 UTC on Thursday, 26 September 2024.For the full current version of the article, see 2023 World Snooker Championship on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Aditi.
On this week's podcast I speak to Stafford Murray Stafford is the former Head of Performance Analysis at the English Institute of Sport, Director of Innovation at High Performance Sport New Zealand and now Head of Analysis at England and Wales Cricket Board. Stafford is a true pioneer in the world of performance analysis and innovation, having been at the forefront of evolving the discipline from match analysis and notation analysis to carving out the discipline of performance analysis. He has successfully stayed at the cutting edge by not only using data and analytical techniques to gain insight and blend with innovation and now embracing data science teams, artificial intelligence and machine learning. What you'll hear in this conversation is a heady mix of how world-class practitioner and leader is able to keep difficult concepts simple, balance the hardcore elements of mathematics but ground them in reality and someone who is able to balance the IQ elements with EQ - keeping the coach and the performer at the heart of everything he does.
This week we interview and play Hatter or Lower with one of the Littlewood's Cup Final heroes Rob Johnson! Where will he end up on our leaderboard Bedford born Rob turned professional for Luton in August 1979 but his career was almost over before it started as he suffered two serious knee injuries which he had to get over before making his League debut for Lincoln on loan in August 1983. The tenacious full-back earned his Hatters debut soon after but further injuries meant that his appearances were only sporadic over the next six years although he did turn out in the magical Littlewoods Cup final win over Arsenal in 1988. A move to David Pleat's Leicester in 1989 was not a success and after spells at Barnet and Hitchin he turned to physiotherapy which he had studied during his long periods on the sidelines. Rob became a physio with the English Institute of Sport for 15 years before joining a private practice in Bedford and then moving to the Czech Republic to practice. Learn more about your ad choices. Today's podcast is with Dr. Keith Baar, professor at UC Davis and renowned tendon training researcher and expert. Professor Keith Baar received his PhD from the University of Illinois, and over the last 20 years, Keith has worked with elite athletes, as the scientific advisor to Chelsea Football Club, USA Track and Field, Paris Saint-Germain Football Club, British Cycling, The English Institute of Sport, Leicester Tigers Rugby, and the Denver Broncos. He also spent time as an assistant strength coach with the University of Michigan football team where he was an undergraduate. Keith first guest appearance on this podcast, was on the role of various exercise velocities and tendon health, and was an extremely popular episode. Tendon training is crucial for overall health and performance, as tendons rely on loading for adaptation. Isometrics, a potent tool, are key to a robust training program. In this episode, Keith Baar explores tendon tissue adaptation trends and how different forms of isometrics and training methods optimize tendon health and high-tension capabilities. He delves into the impact of both low-speed and high-speed loading movements, emphasizing the compounding effects achieved by combining them for enhanced performance. Dr. Baar discusses essential concepts like tendon remodeling, the body's protective mechanisms, and the optimal sequence for training to realign and remodel tendon tissue. Drawing from examples in swimming, running, and rock climbing, he highlights the integral role tendons play in shaping training and performance outcomes. Have you ever TAKEN THE PLUNGE?? Cold water immersion is one of hottest trends in the health and wellness world. A number of theories exist re: the benefits of cold water immersion. Generally we think of recovery from exercise, muscle soreness, injuries, etc. But the recent “craze” has been due to the potential to improve depression and anxiety, boost immunity, and perhaps even extend our longevity. But does it work? Is there data to support it?? LET'S ASK AN EXPERT! Our expert today is Mike Tipton, PhD, FTPS! Dr. Tipton is a Professor of Human & Applied Physiology, Extreme Environments Laboratory, School of Sport Health & Exercise Science, University of Portsmouth, UK. He has published over 750 scientific papers, reports, chapters, abstracts and books in his research areas of drowning, thermoregulation, environmental and occupational physiology, and survival in the sea. Prof Tipton is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and The Physiological Society. He was awarded his MBE for services to physiological research in extreme environments; the Ireland Medal for saving lives from drowning worldwide; and the H&L Swiftwater rescue lifetime achievement award from the USA. LET'S DIVE IN, SHALL WE?? Key highlights in this episode include: What's the basic physiology behind cold water immersion? What happens to our bodies when we make ourselves cold? Does it differ in full submersion vs a shower? Does it change if we put our faces in the cold water as opposed to just our bodies? What temperature is most appropriate for a cold plunge? How long should we stay submerged? What are the potential short and long term benefits? What does the research suggest? What are the risks/potential downsides? Who should NOT be doing this? What about cryochambers? Do they work? Who is Wim Hof? Should we do as the Iceman does?? Dr. Tipton recommends the following resources to learn about cold water immersion: The University of Portsmouth webpage- including Dr. Tipton's profile. 2022 British Medical Journal article "Cold Water Therapies: Minimising Risks". Andrew M Jones PhD DSc is Professor of Applied Physiology in the Department of Sport and Health Sciences at the University of Exeter. He's internationally recognized for his research in the control of, and limitations to, skeletal muscle oxidative metabolism; causes of exercise intolerance in health and disease; respiratory physiology, particularly the kinetics of pulmonary gas exchange and ventilation during and following exercise; and sports performance physiology and nutrition, particularly in relation to endurance athletics. Prof Jones has authored more than 350 original research and review articles (>38K citations) and is co-Editor of three books. He is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences, the European College of Sport Science, and the Physiological Society. Jones is Editor-in-Chief of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise and serves on the Editorial Board of six other international journals in sports medicine and exercise science. Prof Jones has acted as a consultant to a number of governing bodies of sport or commercial companies including UK Athletics, the English Institute of Sport, Gatorade Sports Science Institute and Nike Inc. He's been an advisor and consultant to the Breaking 2 and INEOS projects with Eluid Kipchoge and professional endurance athletes including Paula Radcliff. Professor Jones gives his understanding of the evidence of the performance effect of the so called “super shoes” and whether they explain the recent pro marathon runner excess performance and if so, by how much. Amateur marathon runners may find interesting our exchange about the Boston Marathon and how it is getting harder to get into, and what amateur marathoners must do to enhance performance in order to qualify and get into the Boston Marathon today. Professor Jones gives his perspective on the popularized notion that when it comes to marathon training “volume is king” and if not, what would be the alternative. We talk about distance runners that are getting older, and how Professor Jones recommends changing training, if at all, for those looking to remain competitive. Finally, we talk about science and evidence-based nutrition protocol throughout the training cycle and pre-race and race nutrition. CAREER-VIEW MIRROR - biographies of colleagues in the automotive and mobility industries.
Olly Bridge is a Health and Wellbeing expert who originally trained at the English Institute of Sport (EIS) and proceeded to work with elite athletes like Jenson Button and Mark Webber at Benetton/Renault Formula One and the British Olympic Gymnastics Team. Having served as an Executive Director of the Workplace Health Association of Australia (WHAA), Head of Health and Wellbeing at Australia's largest health insurer and COO of Advanced Health Intelligence, Olly also runs his own consultancy practice called “Build a Bridge” and uses his eclectic 25 years of experience to coach ‘Corporate Athletes', and their teams, to perform at their peak. Ollie's career journey really has been one of self discovery and continuous growth. He has worked in elite sport, for big corporates and for small start ups and he talks openly about the benefits and challenges of each and how he arrived at decisions to move from one type of environment to another and sometimes back again. I love the authenticity of Olly's story. He shines a light on the more challenging reality of a successful career in a way that illustrates very clearly what an iterative process life can be, especially if you pay attention to your gut and are prepared to make changes when you've outgrown your current role. He realised that the world of elite sport, that he'd worked so hard to become a part of was not going to work long term for him and so he made a move. After landing a great position with BMW, getting his own flat and a company car in his early 20s he realised he was living the life of a 45 year old when he felt he should be having more fun. An international opportunity sounded like the perfect way to inject fun but was a test of his relationship. With his passion for sport, health and fitness bubbling away under the surface, it was only a matter of time before he had to get back into that world. Olly's purpose is to impact health at scale which you'll hear derives from an impulse to help others that showed up as early as his junior school days. I'm delighted to have this opportunity to introduce him to you and look forward to hearing what resonates with you. Athletes' mental health struggles are finally getting the kind of attention they deserve, but did you know that coaches and leaders in elite sports also struggle with depression, anxiety, and other issues? Alex Wolf's experience with this after the Beijing Olympics helped inform a program at the English Institute of Sport that prioritized the emotional wellbeing of coaches and athletes alike before, during, and after the London Games in 2012. In the buildup to the London Games, Wolf was also instrumental in helping Team GB's rowers land a record medal haul. Part of this was increasing the emphasis on strength and conditioning, but implementing a values-driven approach was just as important. Before working with the rowing squad, Alex helped guide the coaches of Britain's track and field athletes. He has since co-founded Strength and Conditioning Academy, authored the book Strength and Conditioning for Rowing, and continues to guide coaching and leadership development programs around the world. In this episode, Alex shares: · Why coaches often struggle with mental health and what can be done to help them · Which filters he uses to make better decisions, practice essentialism, and do deep work · Why his 3 Fs values model – family, fulfillment, and fairness – informs everything he does · How giving coaches space, time, autonomy, and structure allows them to grow · What coaching Olympians taught him about patience and self-reflection Find out more about Alex's learning, leadership, and coaching development on his website, https://strengthconditioning.academy, via his Twitter feed, and in his book Strength and Conditioning for Rowing.
Today's guest is transforming the way women talk about their bodies. Dr Emma Ross is the former Head of Physiology at the English Institute of Sport where she led the smartHER progamme, educating coaches and athletes about the female body in high performance sport. Since then, Emma's worked with everyone from elite athletes and top coaches through to head teachers and schoolgirls - passionate about making sport a better environment for all women. In 2020 Emma co-founded The Well HQ, an organisation that educates and empowers women to understand their bodies and use that knowledge to thrive in sport, health and life. In recognition of all she is doing for the wellbeing of women and girls, in 2021 Emma received the Sunday Times Sports Women of the Year Changemaker Award. In this important episode we explore the lack of female focused sports science research and why that matters for women of all ages. Emma shares her journey from education to applied sports science at the English Institute of Sport to all she is doing today with the Well HQ. We talk about the challenges facing male coaches working with young female athletes, how some sports are finally having conversations about women's bodies that have been deemed taboo for decades but also recognise that one football club talking openly about tracking players' periods doesn't mean we've solved the problem across sport. It's such a powerful conversation and Emma's passion to ensure sport is something that all women can enjoy throughout life is infectious. Our Great Coach on this episode is Conor O'Shea. Conor was capped 35 times for Ireland and represented them at the 1995 and 1999 Rugby World Cups. After his playing career ended, he became Director of Rugby at London Irish and was awarded Zurich Rugby Director of the Season in 2002. He then joined Harlequins as Director of Rugby in 2011 leading them to win the premiership in 2012. Conor then became Head Coach of the Italian National Team in 2016 and had immediate impact leading the team in the first ever win over South Africa. He also led the team to the 2019 World Cup in Japan. He is presently the England Rugby Union's director of performance. Conor is that rare breed of person who has played and coached Rugby at the most elite level, the World Cup, and been able to succeed in off-field leadership positions such as the National Director of the English Institute of Sport. He succeeds through his ability to empathize with people at all levels in the organisation, and communicate with them in a way that engenders action and alignment. He is charismatic, engaging, and believes, in his words, in being all in, on what you are passionate about. This translates into an innovative view of coaching, where he pushes his teams to move beyond the fear of failure, and try and ultimately achieve things they haven't done before. This was a fun conversation, and some of the key highlights for me were: The need to look beyond your own ego and focus on the contribution you are making to the future success of the team or organisation you are a part of for that brief moment. The importance of a mix of personalities within the team, and this includes the Mavericks; where everyone's individuality is embraced but their energy is united behind the teams goals. And the way he summarized the team values at Harlequinnes using the word TRUE, which stood for Tempo, Ruthless, Unpredictable and Enjoyment. And how enjoyment was crucial to fueling their success as a team.
