After reciting an unflattering poem about Stalin to a small group of friends, Osip Mandelstam was betrayed to the police and endured five years in exile before dying in transit to the gulag. His wife, Nadezhda, spent the rest of her life dodging arrest, advocating for Osip's work and writing what came to be known as Hope against Hope.Hope against Hope is a testimony of life under Stalin, and of the ways in which ordinary people challenge and capitulate to power. It's also a compendium of gossip, an account of psychological torture, a description of the poet's craft and a love story.Pankaj Mishra joins Adam to discuss his final selection for Human Conditions. Welcome to "The Bible in Today's World", the show that compares today's world with the Word of God. In general and specifically, are we following the Bible in our daily walks? Is society demanding that we follow the Word of God in all that we do? Does our Almighty Father look upon us and frequently say, "Well done, good and faithful servant!" - or is He thinking of us as He thought/thinks of Sodom and Gomorrah? On today's show, we will explore "Why Does God Hate Sin?", Part 1". We will also play an interview with LIBBIE HALL. Libbie Hall, joined us to discuss her first release, "Hope Against Hope". From Her Website: "Libbie Hall is married to Brian and they have 3 children and two dogs. She has been leading worship for over twenty years. She loves to lead Bible studies, read, and drink coffee. Libbie also loves the beach. Although she is in Michigan now she grew up in Southern California and also spent a few years in central Texas. Freezing weather is not her friend. But she does love snow at Christmas. Mostly she loves Jesus and writing about her life with Him. From Her Amazon Page: "Libbie Hall is an author, speaker and founder of Called to More. Her mission is to empower women through the Word of God and help them understand that whether they are a business woman, minister or stay at home mom, they have been called to more than they could ever imagine. Libbie has faced her fair share of struggles and believes that sharing them with other women will help them overcome. As a minister and former Creative Arts Pastor, Libbie has spent over 20 years developing ministry teams and leading worship. She is married to Brian and they have 3 incredible children and one completely amazing granddaughter. She is also a dog mom, beach lover and fan of intense laughter." https://libbiehall.com

Jeremiah pens some of the most beautiful words of hope to his community. But those hope-filled words are smack in the middle of horrors. Pan back even just a few verses, and one can see that Jeremiah is writing from prison, where his people are under siege by the Babylonian Empire, their towns and cities are ravaged, homes and even palaces are in rubble, and the streets are filled with corpses. sigh. What does hope even mean in the context of such devastation and sorrow in Jeremiah's world and in ours? If hope is as puny as mere optimism, it might not mean much. But hope is a fierce practice that only makes sense in the face of the hopeless. As we engage both the expectant Advent of our communal church life, and the joyous cultural festival of Christmas in the wider community, how might we stoke and nurture our practice of hope in a broken and beautiful world?Sermon begins at minute marker 5:00Jeremiah 33.10-18ResourcesBibleWorm podcast: Episode 513 – Hope Against Hope, Amy Robertson and Robert Williamson, Jr.“Why Christmas Is Canceled In Bethlehem,” analysis by Ishaan Tharoor, The Washington Post, November 29, 2023.Cole Arthur Riley, Black Liturgies. “Advent, a season where we make space for grief, longing, sacred darkness, and silence…” Inhale: The world feels dim. This week BibleWorm enters the Christian season of Advent with a reading from Jeremiah 33. The text given to us by the Narrative Lectionary is Jeremiah 33:14–18, a lovely text about a righteous king from the house of David who will restore Jerusalem. But the hope offered by that short text seems naïve in the context of the rest of Jeremiah 33, which takes place against the backdrop of the Babylonian siege of Jerusalem, with Jeremiah in prison, anticipating the destruction of the city yet to come. In that context, the passage speaks a word of hope, but one muted by the pain and suffering that must yet be endured for an unjust world to be dismantled and for a righteous one to take its place. We struggle with this text, to be honest, and for the first time ever one of us has added a postscript to the podcast after mulling over it for a day or two. Welcome to advent y'all. This text is painful, but it is also beautiful.

Romans 4:18 In hope against hope he believed, so that he might become a father of many nations according to that which had been spoken, "So shall your descendants be.” What are the chances that you (or anyone for that matter) could stand before God with no violations to your account and a record of perfect righteousness? The chances are the same that Abraham and Sarah could have a son, much less he become a father of many nations. Impossible! Out of the question! Hopeless! But God did something in Abraham and Sarah that was beyond common sensible from a human perspective. They were beyond the age when human beings are capable of having children. Paul says here, though, that in hope, Abraham believed against all hope, that not only would he finally have a son with Sarah but that God would keep the promise to make him the father of many nations. God counted that faith in His promise as righteousness. How about you? God promises that you will be an heir of eternal life and stand before Him without blemish or spot marring your righteousness. You look at yourself, and what do you conclude? That's impossible. But then you think, “But God said it's possible. I hope He will do it, because if He doesn't, there's no way. I perish in my sins.” All hope is gone as you look at the reality of your sins, yet because of God's word, you hope against hope and trust in God's love and promise in Christ. Take heart from Paul's explanation to the Colossians of our salvation. Colossians 1:21-23 “And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach—if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard.” If you have in hope against hope believed in Christ for your salvation, then God calls you to live to love with Jesus. That same hope with which you cling to Jesus is the same hope that spurs you to live to love with Him. Believe He can and will do in you what He promises to do—express His love for the glory of God.
