Welcome to the Season 4 finale! Our guest is Jean Thompson, author of many novels, former National Book Award finalist, and most recently the author of The Poet's House. This book explores the sordid lives and falsehoods of poets in California through the eyes of a young admirer, a woman entrenched in blue-collar life but fascinated by poetry. The book takes on the blurred lines of mentorship, the elitism of poetry, and the differences between loving writing and writers themselves. Jean chose a book first and foremost for its prose style, so unique and unlike a great deal of contemporary writing. James Agee's A Death in the Family, his posthumous Pulitzer prize winning masterpiece, takes the simple and magnifies it to Biblical proportions. The death of a family patriarch shatters the suburban ideals within, and we witness the internal and external carnage in one way or another. This is our season finale, but Your Favorite Book will be back in mid-august with more interviews. Stay tuned! This episode is brought to you by Yotpo.   It took an earthquake to turn Jean Thompson, an investor at Seattle Chocolate, into the company's owner.   In 2001, an earthquake hit the Seattle area, leveling the building that Seattle Chocolate was renting. The building was condemned, so suddenly, the company needed significant investment to buy and prep another building to make its confections. Thompson went from investor and owner. Shortly afterward, the company's CEO resigned, and the company was entirely in her hands.   "I luckily was so naive as to how difficult it would be and how steep the learning curve would be that I just thought, 'It's a great product, and I love chocolate,' and I'd gotten a little bit of a taste for it, so I decided to try running it myself," she says. "And that was 20 years ago."   The key to surviving any challenge is figuring out your brand's trajectory and having patience with yourself, Jean says.   "I forget the silly ballplayer or coach who said, 'We didn't lose - we just needed more innings,'" she says. "I thought about that many times because it's the long runway that allows you to work through all the difficulties."   Surviving a competitive environment can seem like a massive jigsaw puzzle year after year.   "If you give yourself enough time, ultimately, somehow, miraculously, it seems to work," she says. "Or at least that was the case as I look back on my 20 years."   In Part 1, Jean talks about:   * Gratitude for the support and hard work from the people who work at Seattle Chocolate. * An overview of the two brands - Seattle Chocolate and Jcoco. * How an earthquake changed her role in the company. * The challenges of running the company without a marketing background or business degree. * The case for patience and perseverance.   Join Ramon Vela and Jean Thompson as they break down the inside story on The Story of a Brand.   For more on Seattle Chocolate, visit: https://www.seattlechocolate.com/    Subscribe and Listen to the podcast on all major apps. This episode is brought to you by Yotpo.   At Seattle Chocolate, the mission is the elevate the dialog around chocolate, says Jean Thompson, Owner, and CEO. Part of that mission is also helping the community.   To that end, the company gives its product to food banks. Chocolate, Jeans reminds us, is a plant-based food that's high in antioxidants.   "If we could use the power of our category to empower our consumers, to help their neighbors in their time of need, it felt really good, and it has felt so good for the past ten years to do that to the point where we've now added a built-in mission for chocolate," Jean says.   Seattle Chocolate likes to think of its products as "thank-you bars." With gift-giving in mind, the brand spends a lot on design to help set it apart from the competition.   Other considerations at Seattle Chocolate are ensuring the ingredients are clean and non-GMO. They're often vegan and locally sourced as much as possible.   Jean says that the company's Jcoco brand is more of an "origin" chocolate.   Inspiration for the various flavors comes from everyone and anyone at the company and often is inspired by travel and destinations. Flavors also change for the seasons and holidays.   In Part 2, Jean talks about:   * A rundown of the brand's products. * The difference between truffles and chocolate bars. * The company's charitable efforts. * Why chocolate is a healthy food in some ways. * The emphasis on package design. * Why the company partners with Girls Inc. * A look at the ingredients. * Where to find the products.   Join Ramon Vela and Jean Thompson as they break down the inside story on The Story of a Brand.   For more on Seattle Chocolate, visit: https://www.seattlechocolate.com/     Subscribe and Listen to the podcast on all major apps. This episode of Ballot and Beyond, contributed by the Maryland Women's Heritage Center, is adapted from a biographical sketch of Harriet Tubman written by Dr. Kate Clifford Larson. Dr. Larson is a scholar and the author of the Tubman biography, “Bound for the Promised Land: Harriet Tubman, Portrait of an American Hero.” The reader is Jean Thompson, a volunteer with Maryland Women's Heritage Center. Best known for her heroism on the Underground Railroad, abolitionist Harriet Tubman also was an advocate for women's rights and equality. When interviewed at the turn of the 20th century, Tubman noted that she had been a member of “Miss Anthony's organization,” the National Woman's Suffrage Association. She remained in contact with many white suffragists but championed the activism of black women leaders in responding to the racism they confronted in the predominantly white National Woman's Suffrage Association. Near the end of her life, Tubman encouraged a fellow suffragist, “tell the women to stand together..." Tubman died in 1913, seven years before women got the vote. Jean Thompson is the Owner and CEO of Seattle Chocolate Company, makers of the Seattle chocolate and jcoco fine chocolate brands. She has been running Seattle Chocolate for almost 18 years and has grown it from the ruins it was in after the Nisqually Earthquake in 2001 to the successful company that it is today.  A native New Englander, Jean graduated from Bates College before embarking on a career in high tech. Prior to taking over the mantle in Seattle Chocolate Company, she was actively raising her two children in Bellevue, Washington and devoting her free time to nonprofit work. She had previously worked at Microsoft as a Corporate Communications Manager. In this episode… With no experience in the chocolate industry, Jean Thompson found herself taking leadership of a small chocolate company in Seattle. She was the majority shareholder with a 95% stake after the Nisqually Earthquake of 2001, and it was her love for chocolate, her determination, and her willingness to learn and adapt which drove her desire to turn the company fortunes around.  18 years later, Jean has learned a lot from running the chocolate company and she has evolved her company to have a social branding that impacts and touches many lives. Andrea Heuston’s featured guest in this episode of the Lead Like a Woman Show is Jean Thompson, the woman behind Seattle Chocolate. Tune in as they talk about Jean's transition from the tech industry to the chocolate industry, her shift from being a stay-at-home mum to becoming the owner of a chocolate company, the struggles and challenges women face in creating and leading companies, and why her decisiveness is her undeniable business superpower.

At first glance, Jean Thompson didn’t seem to be the likely, or obvious, CEO of a multi-million dollar chocolate company. She spent a big part of her career at Microsoft. And, when she became a mother, stepped out of the workforce for a decade. It took a force of nature -- an earthquake -- that set in motion her next sweet  career, as an investor and then CEO of the Seattle Chocolate Company -- even though few people thought she could do it, including, some days, herself. Jean joins Julia Pimsleur to share her journey and about the compassion and determination she cultivated that allowed her to turn around a once-failing company into a multimillion-dollar success story; the push she gave to the company to make jcoco, a chocolate with a social impact mission that has donated more than 4 million servings of food to those in need; and, the real reason why women love chocolate so much.

It's therefore befitting that she is the Owner and CEO of Seattle Chocolate Company, one of the Northwest's premiere chocolate companies. In this episode, we talk about how she went from investor to CEO/Owner after an earthquake nearly destroyed Seattle Chocolate. 16 years later, she's still just as passionate about the business, bringing creative changes to the company, recreating the brand, innovating and disrupting an industry that she loves dearly. She also reflects on how she questioned her own abilities at running the company when the recession hit and sales fell flat but she kept moving forward and came out the other side on top (while other chocolate companies went under). What came out of that time was JCOCO, a slightly higher end chocolate with a philanthropic arm that has, to date, provided 2.7 million meals to those in need in just the past 5 years. For more than 25 years, Jean Thompson has been a private history scavenger and detective, pursuing what she calls "pieces of The Dream.""The Dream," as articulated by noted bibliophiles, historians and curators, is to reveal untold, hidden, forgotten or lost stories about the American experience in ways that instill cultural understanding and cultivate pride. The "pieces" that tell the stories include ephemera -- documents, photographs, advertising and other paper records, including items that might have been thrown away rather than saved. These include ancestral belongings, books, artworks, sheet music, souvenirs and other objects of material culture that evoke a specific era, event or place."Private collections are vital repositories: major institutions of art, culture and learning have been built with objects preserved first in private homes," says Thompson. "With guidance from many in the field, I specified in my will that when the time is right, I would 'send home' items that can serve their highest and best purposes as part of other collections or institutional holdings. My will specifies the Enoch Pratt Free Library as a major recipient of the collection, so that materials deemed relevant to the larger story of Baltimore and Maryland will remain here."Guest speaker: Hari Jones, African American Civil War Museum, on "Adding a Powerful Ally: Lincoln's Colored Troops." Recorded On: Thursday, September 26, 2013
