We skipped the 3-hour line. And it cost us more than our mortgage payment. Paul Adams just got back from Disneyland with his family - and he's not sorry about what he spent. In this video, he breaks down the one upgrade that turned a chaotic, line-standing, schedule-juggling Disney trip into something his family will talk about for years. But this isn't just a Disney hack video. Because halfway through the trip, Paul and his wife sat in a room in Coronado and were asked a question that stopped them cold: Have you planned for your family's legacy as intentionally as you've planned for your career? That question - and what it means for how you spend your time, your money, and your years with your kids still at home - is what this video is really about. Days after ChatGPT launched, Intercom called it an “iPhone moment" and bet a $300 million ARR business that AI was the future of customer service. On this episode of Onward, Ben talks with Paul Adams, Chief Product Officer of Fin (formerly Intercom), about the pivot to AI customer service: why the decision was easier than you might think, why the culture change was brutal, and how the bet ended up strengthening the legacy business instead of killing it. Since Fundrise runs its own investor relations program on Fin, the episode doubles as a customer interview. They get into AI's effect on knowledge work, the risk of letting an agent write to a database, Claude Code as "magic," and why Paul calls himself a "delusional optimist" about what comes next.— For a deeper dive into these insights and more, be sure to listen to the full episode of the Onward podcast.Have questions or feedback about this episode? The Truth Behind “8–12 Weeks”: Injection Mold Tooling Timelines Exposed

In this episode of China Manufacturing Decoded, Adrian is joined by Paul Adams, Head of New Product Development at the Sofeast Group's contract manufacturer Agilian Technology, to discuss one of the most common assumptions hardware founders make before moving into tooling: that tooling will take “8 to 12 weeks.” Paul explains why that figure can be true in very simple cases, but why it is often misleading for real consumer electronics, IoT, and hardware products. Tooling timelines depend on design readiness, DFM review, part complexity, steel selection, toolmaker capacity, customer responsiveness, and the timing of Chinese holidays such as Chinese New Year and Golden Week. They also discuss why the tooling clock does not really start when the purchase order is placed, why T0, T1, and T2 trials need to be planned carefully, and why founders should build schedule buffers before cutting steel. For hardware startups and product teams preparing for injection molding, metal stamping, die casting, or other production tooling, this episode explains how to build a more realistic tooling schedule and avoid costly launch delays.   Podcast sections 00:00:31 – The “8 to 12 week tooling timeline” 00:02:28 – What tooling includes and why it matters 00:04:21 – Tooling cost and why first-time founders get caught out 00:06:08 – Where the 8 to 12 week figure comes from 00:07:23 – Why real consumer electronics products are more complex 00:08:35 – When the tooling timer really starts 00:11:10 – Why design readiness and DFM review are critical 00:13:26 – How part complexity affects tooling lead time 00:13:50 – Steel selection: P20, H13, and tool life 00:15:40 – Responsiveness during T0, T1, and T2 trials 00:16:26 – Why being in China can speed up tooling decisions 00:19:03 – Planning around Chinese New Year, Golden Week, and May Day 00:21:47 – How to create a tooling schedule that works 00:22:05 – Reviewing the DFM report properly before cutting steel 00:24:00 – Building a tooling specification and critical path plan 00:25:34 – Understanding T0, T1, T2, and rework cycles 00:27:45 – Why you should always build in a schedule buffer 00:28:56 – Why many tooling delays come from the customer side 00:30:15 – Final advice: understand the full tooling process   Related content Tooling Management for Plastic Injection Molds in China Plastic Injection Mold Tooling Management & Risk Reduction [Podcast] Common Design For Manufacture Improvements On Plastic Injection Molded Parts Injection Mold Tooling Roadmap: How to Get from Smart Design to T1 Samples What are Plastic Injection Mold Tooling Revisions? A prototype works. The team signs it off. Everyone feels confident. Then production starts, and unexpected failures appear. Why does this happen? In this episode, Adrian is joined by Paul Adams, the Sofeast Group's Head of New Product Development, to discuss the gap between prototype and production. This is part one of a two-part discussion on why working prototypes can still fail once products move toward mass production. Paul explains why prototypes and production units are often not the same thing, even when they look identical. The episode covers five areas where important changes can creep in: Components Firmware Suppliers and factories Tolerances and process variation Validation basis The key point is simple: A prototype proves the concept. Production proves the process. Understanding that difference helps hardware teams, product developers, and importers avoid painful surprises when moving from a successful prototype to production. In part two, next week, we'll continue the discussion by looking at common real-world failure patterns, including component swaps, firmware tidy-ups, factory transfers, and how a structured NPI process helps close the gap.   TIMESTAMPS 00:00 Introduction: why working prototypes can still fail 02:09 Prototypes and production units are not the same thing 03:46 The gap between prototype and production 04:23 Five things that change before production 04:36 1 - Components: prototype parts vs production parts 09:17 2 - Firmware: why prototype code is not production-ready 12:03 3 - Suppliers and factories: why process knowledge gets lost 16:50 4 - Tolerances and process variation 19:54 5 - Validation basis: What exactly was tested? 22:22 Key takeaway from part one 23:17 What to expect in part two   Related content How Many Prototypes Are Needed Before We Get ‘Perfection?' Yep - we are at the start of a new world - a world where AI is going to be 'even bigger than the internet'. And as the leaders of challenger brands in CPG, we've gotta lean in. In this episode of Brand Growth Heroes, I'm joined by one of my oldest and best friends, Paul Adams, CPO & Marketing at a multi-billion dollar company, Intercom AND he is building Fin.ai. If you're not in 'Tech' you may not have heard of him, but Paul Adams is one of the world's most prominent tech product designers, researchers, and authors -  recognised as one of the world's leading thinkers on the the intersection between humans and technology... and now between humans, commercialisation and AI.... amongst many other aspects of tech that most of us are not even privy to!  Described as "one of Silicon Valley's most wanted", he's also one of my closest friends, and I can't tell you how proud we are of the young man who rocked up to live with us in Balham in 2002 to work at Dyson, his very first job. After only a few years he was poached by Facebook, where he made the platform 'mobile' and then Google, where he worked on making Gmail, Google and YouTube mobile too. It was while working for these behemoths that he moved to San Francisco with his wife Jennifer, who's one of my three besties (Love you, Jen), and became globally renowned on the Tech speaker scene. In this episode, Paul argues that AI isn't just another new channel or tool. It's a platform shift on the scale of the internet and potentially bigger. We talk about why the moment we're in feels eerily similar to 1999, why marketing is getting less effective across the board, and why the brands that win next will look very different to the ones that won the last cycle.A bit more background on Paul:"Most Wanted" Status (2011): Paul Adams was highlighted by Fortune as a highly sought-after talent in Silicon Valley following his significant contributions to major tech firms.Google (Social Research): At Google, he led the social research team, and his work directly influenced the creation of "Circles," which became the foundational feature of Google+. He also worked on Gmail, YouTube, and mobile products.Facebook (Brand Experience): He later joined Facebook as the Global Brand Experience Manager, where he focused on research, design, and product strategy, working with marketers and advertising agencies.Intercom (Product Strategy): He joined Intercom as VP of Product in 2014, later becoming the Chief Product Officer.Thought Leadership: Adams is the author of Grouped: How Small Groups of Friends are the Key to Influence on the Social Web. His work on "The Real Life Social Network" is widely recognized as one of the most viewed presentations on the evolution of social networks. Background: Before his time in tech, he worked as a product designer at Dyson, where he designed electronic appliances. Current Status: As of September 2023, he was working as the Chief Product Officer at Intercom, focusing on product strategy in the age of AI.This isn't a tactical 'AI' for the sake of AI episode. It's a big-picture conversation about what's actually changing, what's already changed, and what brand builders need to understand to stay relevant over the next decade. it was this conversation that made me set up a buzzing new community called NextGen CPG -  a community for AI-native founders.   Take a look and see if you're eligible to join us hereUseful linksConnect with Paul Adams on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/pauladams/Connect with Intercom The #1 AI Agent https://www.linkedin.com/company/intercom/Join the NextGen CPG WhatsApp community and LinkedIn page ============================================================Thanks to Brand Growth Heroes' podcast sponsor - Joelson, the commercial law firm=============================================================If you're a founder, you already know how much of your energy goes into building the perfect product, creating standout branding and connecting with your consumers. But don't forget that scaling a CPG business also comes with a maze of legal complexities that can make or break your business journey. In this episode of More Than Commas, Paul Adams challenges listeners to consider whether their wealth is a tool or a trophy. Drawing on Dr. Thomas Stanley's The Millionaire Next Door and Stop Acting Rich, Paul explains how wealth flaunted for status can trap us in comparison, distraction, and fragility, while wealth used as a tool creates freedom, impact, and legacy. He highlights the virtue of frugality once admired in America, contrasting it with today's obsession with visible success. True wealth, he argues, often hides in 401(k)s, rental properties, and investments no one sees. Paul also shares a personal story about his new Tesla Cybertruck and how visibility has changed how others perceive him. With humility and reflection, he invites listeners to examine their own spending habits and ask: Are you building tools for a meaningful life, or collecting trophies for display? -- Timestamps: 01:15 – The fragile nature of status-based wealth 02:40 – Wealth as a tool for impact and legacy 03:25 – Biblical wisdom: contentment and generosity 05:00 – The traps of comparison, distraction, and fragility 06:40 – The lost virtue of frugality and visible wealth 08:20 – Hidden wealth: assets no one sees 09:50 – Paul's Cybertruck story & final reflections   -- This Material is Intended for General Public Use. Adrian is joined once again by Paul Adams, the Sofeast Group's Head of New Product Development, based at Agilian Technology, our contract manufacturer, to discuss the importance of phase gate (or stage gate) reviews in new product introduction (NPI). When developing and manufacturing a product, rushing forward without checks at key stages can lead to huge risks: design flaws, wrong materials, costly tooling mistakes, or even losing contracts. Paul explains how phase gates work as a “traffic light system” that ensures your project only moves forward when requirements are met, risks are managed, and budgets/resources are aligned. Regarding YOUR new product launch project. Listen and then ask yourself: Are you blending phases and hoping for the best, or are you applying disciplined checks that save time, money, and stress in the long run?   Episode Sections: 00:12 – Introduction 00:50 – Why phase gates matter 02:42 – What phase gates are 05:17 – Implementing phase gates 18:58 – Case study (failure) 31:18 – Case study (success) 33:31 – Best practices 35:13 – Wrap-up   Related content... Anthony Howie Waye is someone I've always wanted to do a podcast with, and finally—during a two-week trip to California this month with his daughter—Howie came over to hang out for the day, and we recorded a pod. We covered a lot in this one, from the start of Howie's BMX career to riding for GT in the U.S., and then becoming the biggest name and a dominant Pro in Australia during the late '80s and into the '90s. We talk about him having to miss the 1989 home Worlds in Australia, meeting Mike Miranda and Toby Henderson, the competition down under, and the riders he battled with—guys like Paul Adams and Lee Egan—as well as the riders he respected and followed as a fan post-career, including Warwick Stevenson, Khalen Young, Sam Willoughby, Josh Jolly, Izaac Kennedy, and more. We also get into GT, S&S Racing, his first Worlds in 1991 in Norway, racing Christophe Leveque for the first time, and landing on the cover of BMX Plus! from that same Worlds main with Leveque. We dive into his 1994 trip to the U.S., winning the ABA World Cup in Toledo, Ohio, and then winning every lap on his way to the final at the 1994 World Championships at Waterford Oaks in Michigan. He shares his thoughts leading up to the main event, what happened once the gate dropped, and tearing his ACL. We also cover the next chapter in Howie's life after racing—coaching, his apparel brand LKYBLN, his return trip to the U.S., Dirty Fest, and so much more.

Operation ‘Spider's Web' was 18 months in the planning, and caused huge damage to Russia's bomber fleet. But as Paul Adams discovered, civilians in Kyiv are uneasy about celebrating this success, fearful of how Russia might respond.Approximately one fifth of Ukraine is currently under Russian occupation. Russia doesn't allow foreign journalists to enter the occupied territories, but the BBC's Olga Malchevska has been corresponding in secret with Ukrainian civilians in Crimea, through which she learned of the risks they face for small acts of resistance.During the rule of Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet in the 70s and 80s, thousands of babies were illegally kidnapped and adopted by couples abroad. Today, many of Chile's ‘stolen children' are in a race against time to trace their aging mothers. Jane Chambers was there as one mother and daughter reunited. The coral reefs of Raja Ampat in Indonesia are among the most beautiful on Earth, but last year suffered a mass bleaching event which left reefs in some regions resembling white desert plains. Mark Stratton reports from West Papua where locals are worried that over-tourism is making the reefs even more vulnerable. And we're in Normandy in Northern France, where this week the 81st anniversary of the D-Day landings was commemorated.
