A special thanks to Anna Okapiec, assistant to the Chancellor.Chancellor Grit McCreath has been the University of Saskatchewan's Chancellor since 2021, a role she will relinquish this year. The appointment as Chancellor is a logical progression for someone who has spent so much time on the university campus (graduation from the College of Education 1991) and has dedicated her life to education and supporting so many along the way. When first receiving this appoint Chancellor McCreath is quoted as saying:“To be able to continue to serve in this prestigious role is truly an honour. Saskatoon is a hub of creativity and culture, but is also grappling with the same problems roiling other Canadian cities. In November, Matt Galloway hosted a special show at a packed Broadway Theatre to meet the people that make life great in the Paris of the Prairies.First up, singer-songwriter Jeffery Straker performs some music from his new album Great Big Sky, and shares how he recently found out he has a new fan: King Charles III.Then, literary power couple Yann Martel and Alice Kuipers only intended to live and work in Saskatoon for a year, but they fell in love with the “land of living skies” — and never left.Plus, Saskatoon's new Mayor Cynthia Block shares how she's going to tackle a growing housing and homelessness crisis, and what it means to be the city's first female mayor. Also, social media comedy star Farideh lands some laughs about women's health and being a (sometimes under-appreciated) mother. And Indigenous-led tourism is inviting the world to Saskatchewan, telling the province's stories through the eyes of Indigenous communities. Jenni Lessard and Honey Constant-Inglis tell us about the power and understanding that can come from sharing a story — and a meal.

Dakota Ray Hebert looks back at growing up in a trailer park for her new comedy album Trailer Treasure; and viral social media star Farideh lands some laughs about women's health and being a (sometimes under-appreciated) mother. We chat with Jeffery Straker and Royal Wood ahead of their first performances at Keyano Theatre. Eugene Carnegie from the theatre also joins us to discuss the process of bringing talent to the Wood Buffalo region.

Jeffery Straker grew up taking piano lessons in small-town Saskatchewan and has gone on to perform over 100 shows per year across Canada, Europe and Latin America. The rootsy-storytelling of his songs has the power to transport a listener – out onto a lake in Canada's North or to the main street of a prairie town. A clever lyricist with an energetic piano style, his song writing has drawn critical comparisons to the likes of Harry Chapin, Kris Kristofferson & Billy Joel, while maintaining a style distinctly his own.

German Culture Alive - A SaskScapes feature seriesThis is the fifth in a series entitled "German Culture Alive”, a special "SaskScapes Podcast presents" feature sponsored by the Saskatchewan German Council. Visit the website to learn more about the non-profit organization, its mandate, and outreach.Waltraude Stehwien's artistic sensibilities run so deep it is as if they form the very makeup of her DNA. Her earliest inspiration was her father who was a visionary and a well-respected puppeteer in Germany. Waltraude wanted nothing more than to follow in his footsteps and she did just that. Her family survived the turmoil of WWII where often they had to hastily relocate, leaving many of her father's treasures behind. Her life's journey eventually brought Waltraude, her husband, and four children to Saskatchewan. Only a few of her father's puppets made the journey. Waltraude was groundbreaking in bringing the art form to life in Saskatchewan. Her second passion was a skill she also learned from her father. The art of scissor cutting (Scherenschnitte). Her work is often inspired by the landscape of our province. Some of her work is currently on tour thanks to the support of OSAC. This was a 40-year reunion between Waltraude and SaskScapes host Kevin Power who also shares a passion for puppetry. The energy in the room during the recording was palpable as the two share insights on artistry in their lives. This was a meeting of two minds and hearts, and a reunion to remember. This episode has a part 2 soon to be released, (Episode 103) featuring Barbara Stehwien (Waltraude's daughter) who shares the story of her father Fritz (Waltraude's husband) who was a prolific and successful painter. Welcome Back to another episode of the Cross Border Interview Podcast. If you don’t know by now, my name is Christopher Brown and I’ll be your host. Since the launch of the podcast I’ve been asked the same thing, why do you do this podcast? And I give everyone the same answer. This podcast is about talking to people in an intimate setting and just having a discussion. Today we find ourselves often becoming keyboard warriors and have forgotten the lost art of the conversation. So with that in mid 2019 I started this podcast to achieve one goal, get people to have conversations again. With no notes, no prepared questions I sit down with subjects to learn about them, from them. Today’s guest is no exception to that. Today I sit down with Saskatchewan Born Musician Jeffery Straker Jeffery is a Folk singer, who has never forgotten his roots. Jeffery and I chat about growing up in a small rural Saskatchewan town, his journey to writing music and performing, and how he enjoys performing smaller home concerts, to larger concerts and festivals. We also discuss his newest single that was released in March, of this year, Light a Fire. So enjoy, Cross Border Interviews Ft.
