A special thanks to Anna Okapiec, assistant to the Chancellor.Chancellor Grit McCreath has been the University of Saskatchewan's Chancellor since 2021, a role she will relinquish this year. The appointment as Chancellor is a logical progression for someone who has spent so much time on the university campus (graduation from the College of Education 1991) and has dedicated her life to education and supporting so many along the way. When first receiving this appoint Chancellor McCreath is quoted as saying:“To be able to continue to serve in this prestigious role is truly an honour. The university has been central to my life and my family's, and continuing to be able to contribute in this capacity is a privilege."LINKS RELATED TO THIS EPISODEThe Saskatchewan German CouncilThe University of Saskatchewan Roy RomanowSupport the show==============================================SaskScapes is a podcast featuring the stories of arts, culture and heritage in Saskatchewan. What's the state of criticism in Ireland? Who needs reviewers and critics and are they even worth reading in any case? Well, one man who is worth reading is Kevin Power, novelist, whose The Written World, just published by The Lilliput Press, gathers some of the reviews and essays he's written over the last decade. I'll be talking to Kevin about his book in this, the last Books for Breakfast of the current season; we hope you've enjoyed the journey so far and hopefully we'll be back with more in the autumn. In the meantime feel free to enjoy the now extensive back catalogue of breakfast bites …Kevin Power established his reputation early, with the publication of Bad Day at Blackrock, which told a fictionalised version of a story that had gripped the country, the death of Brian Murphy in Dublin in 2000 as a result of a violent assault outside a nightclub. That novel was subsequently made into the award winning film What Richard Did directed by Lenny Abrahamson in 2012. He was the winner of the 2009 Rooney Prize and last year his much anticipated second novel White City was published and won a lot of attention and praise. A darkly funny book, it revisits the same sort of terrain occupied by Bad Day at Blackrock, set in the word of Celtic Tiger Ireland among the city's privileged and in this case ruthless upper classes, and it's in the voice of the seriously shattered son of a South Dublin banker desperately trying to piece his life together. Praise for The Written World'Kevin Power's glorious collection reveals a writer to depend upon.' Declan Hughes in The Irish IndependentThe elegant and intelligent essays in The Written World will appeal to anyone with an interest in literary criticism.– Nicole Flattery, author of Show Them A Good Time'The Written World is a testament to Power's well-deserved status as one of Ireland's most reliably engaging writers. Oh, and did I mention he's often hilarious, too?'– Totally Dublin'...his book is metropolitan and cosmopolitan in word and spirit, enlightening and amusing, and across its pages art is happening too.;– drb.ieSupport the show

German Culture Alive - A SaskScapes feature seriesThis is the fifth in a series entitled "German Culture Alive”, a special "SaskScapes Podcast presents" feature sponsored by the Saskatchewan German Council. Visit the website to learn more about the non-profit organization, its mandate, and outreach.Waltraude Stehwien's artistic sensibilities run so deep it is as if they form the very makeup of her DNA. Her earliest inspiration was her father who was a visionary and a well-respected puppeteer in Germany. Waltraude wanted nothing more than to follow in his footsteps and she did just that. Her family survived the turmoil of WWII where often they had to hastily relocate, leaving many of her father's treasures behind. Her life's journey eventually brought Waltraude, her husband, and four children to Saskatchewan. Only a few of her father's puppets made the journey. Waltraude was groundbreaking in bringing the art form to life in Saskatchewan. Her second passion was a skill she also learned from her father. The art of scissor cutting (Scherenschnitte). Her work is often inspired by the landscape of our province. Some of her work is currently on tour thanks to the support of OSAC. This was a 40-year reunion between Waltraude and SaskScapes host Kevin Power who also shares a passion for puppetry. The energy in the room during the recording was palpable as the two share insights on artistry in their lives. This was a meeting of two minds and hearts, and a reunion to remember. This episode has a part 2 soon to be released, (Episode 103) featuring Barbara Stehwien (Waltraude's daughter) who shares the story of her father Fritz (Waltraude's husband) who was a prolific and successful painter. In turn, newcomers have opportunities where they can begin to contribute to their communities and have their voices heard. Kevin Power is joined by guests from MCoS, SaskCulture, RODS, and the city of Yorkton. In 2017, Canadians across the country have been planning how their communities would celebrate 150 years of Confederation. Among those hundreds of events and projects came an idea initiated by Alberta artist Louis Lavoie. A dream to connect our country by creating the mural mosaics project. 150 communities, participated throughout the year, in creating their own murals made from hundreds of individually painted tiles. Yorkton, Saskatchewan. was one of the participating communities and clearly that city couldn’t have been more proud of the result. In this episode Kevin Power is joined by 6 guests, via telephone, who contributed to the creation of the Yorkton mosaic. In the end, Yorkton’s mural consisted of over 600 individually painted tiles. The links to the mural mosaic project can be found here, as well as links to the city of Yorkton and the Godfrey Dean Art Gallery ========================================== THIS EPISODE OF SASKSCAPES IS SPONSORED BY THE CITY OF YORKTON, SASKATCHEWAN. In spite of the linguistic license that defines Roddy Doyle's The Snapper, the characters maintain crucial silences throughout in relation to meaningful issues. This episode examines the system of self-imposed censorship that operates among the female characters in particular and how it leads to isolation and an absence of true intimacy.
The Van, the final novel in Roddy Doyle's Barrytown trilogy, explores the physical, psychological and social impact of unemployment on the protagonist, Jimmy Rabbitte Sr. Having been laid off from his job as a plasterer, Jimmy struggles to find a new role for himself within the family that is not connected to being the breadwinner.
Roddy Doyle is perhaps the single most successful novelist of this period, gaining an audience far beyond the environs of Dublin's Northside where most of his writing is set. Along with the emergence of rock group U2, Doyle represents a brash generational shift, a confident certitude in his generation's worth and ability. His literary focus is not exactly the urban world; rather it is the suburban world.
What has become known as the Barrytown trilogy: The Commitments (1988), The Snapper (1990) and The Van (1991), have become iconic in Irish culture. Centred on one family, the Rabbittes, Roddy Doyle makes reference to current events like the 1990 Soccer World Cup, and in dealing with the issues of teenage pregnancy and unemployment captures the mood of a nation requiring something light and entertaining amid the economic and cultural gloom of the late 1980s.
Fredric Jameson proposes that a "utopia" is a political idea that hopes to transcend, or exist outside, politics, but that must, inevitably, begin inside politics – at "the moment of the suspension of the political," the political must inevitably return. This holds true for the utopian imagined community – a "Dublin soul band" – proposed and tested in Roddy Doyle's The Commitments. If the imagined community represented by the band is haunted by the inevitable return of the political, the novel nonetheless embodies a utopia of speech – a Bakhtinian polyphony in which no one voice is figured as the privileged arbiter of meaning.
To help celebrate the memory of Thomastown's most famous adopted son, one of the musicians performing at The John Martyn Tribute concert dropped into the Beat studios.
