On today's episode we're chatting about The Idea Of You, Amazon Prime's hit romcom directed by Michael Showalter from a screenplay he co-wrote with Jennifer Westfeldt, based on the novel of the same name by Robinne Lee. Starring Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine, it chronicles the love affair between a single mother and the lead singer of a popular boy band. Based on the number of viewers in its first two weeks on Prime Video it has become Amazon MGM's No. 1 romantic-comedy debut of all time! So the hype is certainly there, but we have some real questions, especially as readers of the book…a book that explored ageism, sexism and female agency. As always, we have a lot of feelings on this adaptation! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This is Play It Forward. Real people. Real stories. The struggle to Play It Forward. Episode 337 with Jason Bailey author of Fun City Cinema. A visual history of a great American city in flux, Fun City Cinema reveals how these classic films and legendary filmmakers took their inspiration from New York City's grittiness and splendor, creating what we can now view as "accidental documentaries" of the city's modes and moods. In addition to the extensively researched and reported text, the book includes both historical photographs and production materials, as well as still frames, behind-the-scenes photos, posters, and original interviews with Noah Baumbach, Larry Clark, Greta Gerwig, Walter Hill, Jerry Schatzberg, Martin Scorsese, Susan Seidelman, Oliver Stone, and Jennifer Westfeldt. Extensive "Now Playing" sidebars spotlight a handful of each decade's additional films of note.

NOTE: We had a buffering issue while watching the movie. It’s more likely to cause issues to try and cut around it, so you’ll just have to play along when we say our movie stopped. At last, the callback to the movie after which we named our podcast. Join us as we talk over the namesake of our podcast, the 2001 queer romcom Kissing Jessica Stein (on Starz at the time of recording), starring Jennifer Westfeldt and Heather Juergensen. Despite being from the early 2000s, it really holds up and is utterly delightful in every way. It’s also rated R for some reason we cannot divine. Rental Determination: It is absolutely worth a five dollar rental or a ten dollar purchase. Be advised, there may or may not be some extraneous noises such as mouth sounds, mouth pops, breathing, chair creaking, and the noise you get when you move the mic cable. You’ve been warned. There’s much to marinate on in “Kissing Jessica Stein,” the 2001 bi-curious gem of a romantic comedy that gave us “sexy ugly,” an early Jon Hamm in a small role (to say nothing of Idina Menzel!), Scott Cohen’s great hair and questionable donut eating, a radical Jackie Hoffman nearly stealing the show as best friend Joan, and strong feelings about Jennifer Westfeldt. But most importantly, we get The Bench Scene and Tovah Feldshuh’s oy’ing and kibitzing Judy Stein, a noodge of a mother with a wealth of acting choices and one perfect pause that we can’t stop kvelling over. This week's episode - the third in our Pride series - was recorded in 2002, for the DVD release of KISSING JESSICA STEIN. Featured are actors, co-writers, and co-producers Jennifer Westfeldt and Heather Juergensen. Listenability Score: 1/5. A commentary's listenability score measures how easily it can be heard as a standalone podcast episode.
