Can you blame folks if they think this singer bears more than a passing resemblance to Harry Styles? Just like in the lost KFLX pilot, we're talking about boy bands this week, but not the ones Dustin and Shawn grew up with...One Direction and Westlife are the inspirations this week. 2024's "The Idea of You" is a steamy (if a little oddball) romance flick with a fictional British pop singer at its center. Nicholas Galatzine brings his own pipes to the performance as Hayes Campbell, the breakout star from a group called August Moon. Savan Kotecha, whom we talked about in the Eurovision episode, brings his real-life experience as a songwriter and producer for boy bands to the table on the soundtrack. As always, we take a crack at dissecting the influences that led to the tunes. Pretty sure we nailed at least one of 'em. Pretty darn sure. Featuring special guest Rachel Amanda Bryant!

Al joins us once again to discuss Five Dolls For An August Moon (1970), directed by Mario Bava, and My Sister in Law (1976), directed by Lucio Fulci. Our conversation ranges across such topics as aristocratic Italian actors, the advisability of wearing budgie-smugglers at a weekend house party, the many riffs of Agatha Christie's seminal slasher-whodunit, Muppets songs lifted from Mondo films, and of course a deep appreciation of the work of the great Edwige Fenech (including how to say her name properly). We will be announcing a Spoiler Territory section for both films, so if you haven't seen them before you listen, you can nevertheless avoid spoilers for Five Dolls For An August Moon by skipping ahead to the 59:59 mark, and for My Sister in Law by skipping ahead to 1:52:13. Greetings! Thanks for tuning in to our 101st show. Thistle, here! It feels surreal to post this month due to the imminent departure of our beloved sound engineer and producer, Jenna DiQuarto. Jenna has been with WLRN for 8 years and diligently produced our monthly show with care and craft. You leave some big shoes to fill, dear Jenna. Thank you for your years of service and dedication to the collective, to the station, and to our archives. You will be sorely missed by all of us! Today's show begins with an announcement about our partnership with Garnuu.com/WLRN. Tune in to learn more about this exciting opportunity! Our World News segment is written and delivered by Mary O'Neill with fill-in from Jenna DiQuarto. Caroline Parks was our editor this month and Jenna delivers her commentary about her experiences at this year's Fest as a shuttle driver and general volunteer around camp at the festival. The interview segment is directly from the Land on a quiet morning before the mass haul out. Thistle got to sit down with her instructor, Elizabeth Boyce, WPI festival coach for the ukulele ensemble to hear her reflections on the event this year. At the very end of the show, hear from our sponsor, Garnuu.com/WLRN and then it's onto our sign-offs by different members of the collective. This month's musical selection is a song by Nedra Johnson, board member of WWTLC.org, singer/songwriter, and producer for Big Mouth Girl, an entity that produces a yearly festival on the Land in Michigan. The song is entitled August Moon and depicts the Michigan Magic women tap into when in hive mind mode among those sacred ferns. Margaret's artist's statement follows about the featured cover art for this month's show. Thanks for tuning in! Artist's Statement: "For Edition 101, I used some photos Thistle had from her time at the festival this summer. I basically took the photos and arranged them - emphasizing the banners - WLRN, PUSSY POWER, and RISE around a photo of a tent with musicians playing. I played with the colors - allowing it to become an abstract, and festive, unifying whole - like the festival itself."

Welcome back to episode 5 of the BookTok Book Club Podcast. Today we are talking about The Idea of You by Robinne Lee with Kayla Kleinman(@bookshop_org). We loved getting to know Kayla and learning a little bit more about how she fell in love with books. Her mom was a children's librarian, so books were a big part of her life growing up. In 2020, she read a total of 52 books, reading 1 book per week! And of course, we always get excited about new books. Join us today as we discuss The Idea of You by Robinne Lee. The Idea of you is about Solène Marchand, a thirty-nine-year-old owner of an art gallery in Los Angeles, who is reluctant to take her daughter, Isabelle, to meet her favorite boy band. But since her divorce, she's more eager than ever to be close to Isabelle. The last thing Solène expects is to make a connection with one of the members of the world-famous August Moon. But Hayes Campbell is clever, winning, confident, and posh, and the attraction is immediate. That he is all of twenty years old further complicates things. What begins as a series of clandestine trysts quickly evolves into a passionate and genuine relationship. It is a journey that spans continents as Solène and Hayes navigate each other's worlds: from stadium tours to international art fairs to secluded hideaways in Paris and Miami. For Solène, it is a reclaiming of self, as well as a rediscovery of happiness and love. When Solène and Hayes' romance becomes a viral sensation, and both she and her daughter become the target of rabid fans and an insatiable media, Solène must face how her romantic life has impacted the lives of those she cares about most. Karen Stonely, artist, designer and the Co-Founder of SPAN Architecture, creates wellness and wellbeing experiences in all landscapes – from a retreat in Maine to a high-rise 'oasis' that is exciting, exuberant and 'something fresh and future-thinking for a hotel in the heart of the city that never sleeps'.This episode of DESIGN POD, sponsored by Minotti London and hosted by Hamish Kilburn, Editor, Hotel Designs, explores unconventional materiality, evoking unconventional sense of place and calling out 'wellwashing'. To do this, Kilburn understand's Stonely's unique approach to designing projects. "We're looking at getting the most out of a place and an experience," Stonely explains. "We want our design work to be a gift of that place that heightens your experience." One project, in particular, that cleverly captures a new and perhaps surprising meaning of wellness in its location, Times Square in Manhattan, is Hyatt Centric Times Square; a project that is best described as 'nature revealed in neon'. The other case study explored in the episode is August Moon, a completely different hospitality experience, in contrast, that is expressed as a 'secret escape from the city'; a private waterfront retreat that overlooks Maine's Western Bay. Named by her after the Chinese mid-autumn harvest festival, the two original structures – a separate glass teahouse and a small cottage with pool – were designed by the architect, Robert Patterson in the 1960s. Other episodes in the archive that touch on wellness in design include Kilburn's interviews with Ivaylo Lefterov, Holly Hallam, Jo Littlefair, Marie Soliman and Rachel Hoolahan. Hosted on Acast. If your moon is in Aries, Taurus or Gemini you are having a moon birthday this week! Major Themes This week We are post super full moon in Aquarius where the energy/light is starting to disseminate from the moon. This week is the time to Analyse and Reflect on all that came to light under the full moon. It's a good week to balance your bank statements, do your tax, review your budget, look at patterns in your home & relationships and practice gratitude for all that you've received this moon cycle. The Moon starts this week in Aries, at the beginning of the zodiac so this is a great reset point. If you've been feeling a little washed out or like life has been all over the place, it is a great opportunity to hit the reset button and realise new beginnings are available to you here this week. This week we have two major trines. A trine in astrology is a harmonious aspect and is generally considered the most favourable aspect in articulating astrology. It can bring luck, harmony, major synchronicity, and potential for positive changes. This week has the potential to be awesome. WEEKLY ASPECTS Monday 15 August - Moon in Aries Moon Day. You don't need to do too much today. Make a to do list of the things you'd like to reflect / analyse / balance this moon cycle. Tuesday 16 August - Moon in Aries Mars Day. Make a start on your to do list! There's a lot of fire today with Aries and Mars so make the most to get on with the things you might not be particularly fond of. Wednesday - 17 August Moon in Taurus Mercury Day is everything communication and today with Mercury trining Uranus this gives wind to creative thinking and problem solving from an angel you wouldn't usually take. The groundedness of Taurus will keep you emotionally balanced today so your imagination can go a little wild. Enjoy it! Thursday - 18 August Moon in Taurus Jupiter day there is a second awesome trine occurring with Venus trine Jupiter. Venus, the planet of love, romance, sensuality and pleasure is currently in the playful, nobel and courageous Leo (fire sign) and Jupiter, the planet of expansion is in Aries (fire sign) opening up a divine portal where you can connect to your intuition, creativity and all things love and relationships. Allow the energy of this day to grow all week and really make the most of this time and enjoy it! Friday - 19 August Full Moon in Gemini On Venus day the moon will be in Taurus in the morning and then moves into Gemini later in the day. Enjoy the pleasure of Taurus and Venus and take your life / business / self out on a coffee date. Towards the evening when the moon moves into Gemini your inner world can start to be come ungrounded and slightly bipolar. Saturday & Sunday - 20 + 21 August Moon in Gemini Saturn Day + Sun Day - the Moon stays in Gemini all weekend and the energy has the potential to be polarising and unstable. It can also be imaginative and quite social so a really great time to slow things down and be with people you love and trust. Try and avoid conflicting points of view where things can become heated and unsteady where you might regret saying things you don't mean. Plan some day trips into nature, avoid big crowds. Gemini is an air sign and very 'mental' so earthing in a rainforest or on the beach with people you love to be around would be amazing. John Bleasdale talks to Leon Hunt, the author of Mario Bava: The Artisan as Italian Horror Auteur. The blurb from Bloomsbury: How do we approach a figure like Mario Bava, a once obscure figure promoted to cult status? This book takes a new look at Italy's 'maestro of horror' but also uses his films to address a broader set of concerns. What issues do his films raise for film authorship, given that several of them were released in different versions and his contributions to others were not always credited? How might he be understood in relation to genre, one of which he is sometimes credited with having pioneered? This volume addresses these questions through a thorough analysis of Bava's shifting reputation as a stylist and genre pioneer and also discusses the formal and narrative properties of a filmography marked by an emphasis on spectacle and atmosphere over narrative coherence and the ways in which his lauded cinematic style intersects with different production contexts. Featuring new analysis of cult classics like Kill, Baby … Kill (1966) and Five Dolls for an August Moon (1970), Mario Bava: The Artisan as Italian Horror Auteur sheds light on a body of films that were designed to be ephemeral but continue to fascinate us today. From the book Light of the August Moon; The Mississippi River flooded nearly one third of the country in the spring of 1927. Already impoverished, our cousins endured unconscionable cruelty and danger trying to survive the water, mosquitos, hunger, hopelessness and of course racism. WLRN's edition 41 podcast celebrates women's cultural gatherings by highlighting the spirit of community and female empowerment generated at the Michigan Framily Reunion (MFR), a women-only festival that takes place every year in the pines of Michigan. Jenna and Thistle set up a WLRN table in the marketplace at MFR this year and had a blast meeting and greeting with all of the amazing women who showed up. In this edition, hear the world news as written and delivered by WLRN's youngest member from India, Damayanti, before enjoying Alix Dobkin's classic song "If it Wasn't For the Women." Next, listen to an exclusive interview with Dawn Smith, founder and producer of the Michigan Framily Reunion as she reflects on the highlights of MFR 2019, the year of the Mother, and talks about plans for MFR 2020, the year of the Dragyn. After the interview, hear a sound collage of women gathered this year in the woods of Michigan chatting, attending workshops and singing. The sound collage is framed by Nedra Johnson's song "August Moon" and begins with a brief interview with Alix Dobkin right after she led her workshop called Lesbian Issues that over 60 women attended. We appreciate people who love to make art, and put in the work to make that art. Ben Sears is one of the best examples in Louisville of that. We talk about his time in all sorts of bands, such as Xerxes, Black God, Mountain Asleep, Prideswallower, August Moon. Then we talk about his current career making comic books, including the incredible Double+ series being released by Koyama Press. A super fun and inspiring conversation!

"We recorded a podcast. We recorded a podcast for you. Oh, what a thing to do. And it was all Giallo…" This week Kyle, Matthew and Natalie sit down with Radtober alum and spooky movie aficionado Alex Jacobs to talk about the uniquely Italian horror movie genre: giallo. Beginning in the 1960s, Italian filmmakers inspired by pulp novels and murder mysteries created proto-slasher films known for their stylistic use of music, color and black-gloved killers (along with brunettes and rampant murders at boarding schools). The gang discusses giallo's grand tradition of insane titles. Kyle and Alex get nostalgic about the use of the snap zooms in movies. Plus, we learn about vintage Italian cinema's total disregard for audio recording. But it wouldn't be "This Is Rad!" if there weren't some solid tangents, including a loving tribute to the non-giallo but still Italian horror classic “Suspiria." A fun and informative chat that lovingly celebrates a cool, lesser known corner of the horror movie landscape. Weekly Rads: Raw, Happy Death Day, Stage Fright (1987) Raddendums: Blood and Black Lace, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, Suspiria, Dario Argento, Deep Red, The Case of the Bloody Iris, Five Dolls for an August Moon, All the Colors of the Dark, Bruno Nicolai, Twitch of the Death Nerve, Pieces, Four Flies on Gray Velvet, The Perfume of the Lady in Black, The Red Queen Kills Seven Times, City of the Living Dead, Berberian Sound Studio, The Strange Colour of Your Body's Tears, Inferno, Goblin, The Night Evelyn Came out of the Grace, What Did They Do to Solange? Sarah interviews Robinne Lee, author of The Idea of You, which tells the story of Solene and Hayes. When Solene takes her 13 year old daughter to see the hottest new boy band, August Moon, she meets Hayes and the 2 begin an affair that turns into a relationship. The catch? Solene is 39 and Hayes is 20. What follows is a romance as well as an in-depth look at how society views relationships, women, aging and what is considered normal and acceptable.Follow the GSMC Book Review Podcast at: http://www.gsmcpodcast.com/book-review-podcast.html

Join your host Duncan Under The Stairs discussing all things Horror on The Podcast Under the Stairs. Summer has arrived at last Under the Stairs which means our 4th annual Top 10 series of shows has come to take you through those uncomfortably humid days with a heart does of horror!! I am not one to be accused of short changing listeners or setting easy goals either which makes this years Top 10 series very special indeed!! Over the next 11 episodes in the series we will count down each year in the decade known as the 70's with the mission statement of creating the definitive Top 10 list of movies in the decade, but with a little TPUTS twist if you will. Noah's Ark rules will mean that each year will be represented in the creation of the list and will force myself and my guest to short list each year in the decade from 10 movies to 2!! That's right...only 2 movies from each year can go through which means that this list can/might & will be unlike any Top 10 list of 70's horror movies created on a podcast!! On this show my guest Ricky Morgan and myself will look at 10 movies from 1970 with mini reviews of Hatchet for the Honeymoon, 5 Dolls for an August Moon, The Ancines Woods, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, Blind Woman's Curse, I Drink Your Blood, Scream and Scream Again, Count Yorga: Vampire, Mark of the Devil & Taste the Blood of Dracula. Intro – 0 - 6mins 10secs Top 10 1970 - 7mins 35secs - 1hrs 15mins 10secs Intermission - Eighty Six - FACT - 1hrs 16mins 55secs - 1hrs 20mins Decision Time - 1hrs 20mins - 1hrs 32mins 50secs Closing Out the Show- 1hrs 32mins 50secs - End Closing Song - More Than Love - Snake River Conspiracy The 2 movies picked as going forward to the final roundtable representing the year 1970 are The Bird With The Crystal Plumage & Count Yorga: Vampire. Join me next week with special guest Bo Ransdell to look at 1971 and the following movies: Bay of Blood The Adominable Dr Phibes The Devils Willard Daughters of Darkness Short Night of the Glass Dolls Let's Scare Jessica to Death The House that Dripped Blood Twins of Evil Cat O' Nine Tails Our new A3 Baz v Horror Posters are available to purchase!! In this episode, we're joined by featured guest Terri Lyons. A Philadelphia native, Terri is an award-winning storyteller, actress, keynote speaker, and author of eight books, including her latest, "Light of the August Moon," a collection of short stories of modern history with a poetic twist, stories of the American experience spanning the Roaring Twenties through the Disco Seventies. Among other things, we'll discuss Terri's process of researching and writing "Light of the August Moon." What's fascinating is the fact that many of the most controversial and/or pivotal events of American history took place during the month of August. She writes, "There is nothing new about trying times...History occurs every month of the year, but so many events occured or culminated in the month of August. August, the month when all things ripen." This work should be required reading by all in the age of Trump. We'll delve into the ways in which her work - and its references to and critiques of America's painful yet resilient past - cuts through collective psychic denial about racial and social injustice, promotes a level of introspection that can be healing and restorative, and raises our collective consciousness and understanding about history and its multiple impacts. I hope you'll join us for what will be a lively and thought-provoking episode of #VoicesForRacialHealing.

Italian people have done a lot for humanity. Pizza, pasta, and well the only things I can think of are food related but my point is they also made this movie which is not pizza but is a movie. I wish I could be more clear but after almost 80 minutes of this movie the only concrete thing I could say about this movie is that it is in fact a movie and not a pizza. -Next movie "Schizo" -Email questions and comments at mimekiller@gmail.com
