SXSW Interview. From copy: “3..2..1..Frankie Go Boom,” from writer & director Jordan Roberts embraces madcap comedy with true abandon. Rooted in honesty & sincerity at its heart, the film embraces a raunchy charm that offers laugh-out-loud belly laughs. Subtle underpinnings of sharp societal commentary on everything from the internet to love to religion and sibling torment, invite audiences in on the jokes. Toss in the comedy stylings of comedic veterans like Nora Dunn, Lizzy Caplan, Chris O’Dowd, and Chris Noth, perfectly orbiting a funny & thoroughly frazzled Charlie Hunnan—how could you not laugh?" In the spring of 2009, Chris O’Dowd the Oakland Athletics drafted him in the 40th round of Major League Baseball’s amateur draft. A switch-hitting catcher out of Regis Jesuit High School in Denver, Colorado, he’d become a coveted prospect after years of training alongside his father, Dan, one of the chief architects of the legendary Cleveland Indians teams of the 1990s. O’Dowd had grown up with an unprecedented glimpse into the inner working of Major League Baseball (MLB). As the son of Cleveland’s assistant general manager—and later, the Colorado Rockies’ general manager—he was even observing player assessment meetings by the time he was eight years old. That insider knowledge was vital to his later success playing in the minor leagues (including for Atlanta Braves affiliate, the Mississippi Braves), and on the Chicago White Sox, when he was eventually called up in 2017. But as the injuries piled up in his pro career, O’Dowd found it increasingly difficult to stay prepared for in-game action, especially as a hitter. There wasn’t a comparative substitute for seeing live pitching, which is vital to success at the plate. Over time, he realized this lack of preparation created an insurmountable problem, a predicament his father had just the answer for. In 2016, O’Dowd (who was still playing at the time) and his dad founded WIN Reality, a company that melds the pair’s baseball expertise with revolutionary virtual reality (VR) technology. Using information drawn from in-game film sessions detailing pitchers’ throwing motions, and the flight paths of their balls—data that every major league team now tracks—they created an immersive program that simulates what it’s like to hit in big league games. Before long, they’d built a system that accurately captured the individual characteristics of every MLB pitcher—from Justin Verlander’s slider to Corey Kluber’s sinker—to hone in on their core company mission: helping hitters recognize pitches and build strong mental habits at the plate. In this episode Chris and Sammy discuss: What it was like coming from a baseball family. Many people may have seen Chris' dad, Dan O'Dowd, on the MLB network or heard his name as a GM of an MLB organization, he played professionally as a catcher and now his brother is quite a college prospect. Chris' obsession with helping hitters see the baseball better. A lot of people seem to be against all this technology infiltrating the game today, how would he explain to them the need for WinReality? Some of the success stories of people and teams that have trained with WinReality. There are several different modes to train in WinReality, they discuss each mode and why we need each one, How important do you think it is going to be this off-season with the uncertainty that Covid brings. What it takes to start with using WinReality on their own, What is coming next for WinReality users? Can you share a baseball lesson that your dad taught you that still applies to baseball and business today? You can follow Chris and the WinReality team on Instagram and Twitter. There will be some big announcements coming from them before the end of the year. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/playballkid/message

Welcome to the Munsons at the Movies Podcast. We learned that films featuring O'Dowd tend to have a higher average Rotten Tomatoes score than most of the other actors we've covered so far. Does his career also rank high on the Munson Meter? Listen to find out.
Have you tried turning it off and on again? John, Erika, Jesse and Stewart agree: you can’t go wrong with the IT Crowd, a British comedy series starring Chris O’Dowd, Katherine Parkinson, and Richard Ayaode. John adopted it as the perfect palette cleanser for movies like Children of Men, this week’s movie pick by Erika’s husband, Mike. Featuring quite possibly Clive Owen’s best role, this movie is as bleak as it gets. In our era of pandemic reality, this one hits closer to home than it should. So much for the summer. There's no sun, the rain is down for the day, the hurling's gone boring. Thank God for the Ulster Championship, which served up another barnburner on Sunday between Armagh and Cavan. Keith Duggan was there and he's on the line to tell us about it and to look ahead to Tyrone v Donegal this Saturday. On Friday night, the feelgood factor around the Ireland soccer team will face its sternest test yet, with Mick McCarthy's side heading to Denmark for their latest Euro qualifier. Emmet Malone joins us from Abbottstown as we ponder the surprisingly golden late chapter in Glenn Whelan's career. All this plus watching the Champions League final in LA with Chris O'Dowd, coming atcha in your Tuesday Added Time, with Malachy Clerkin and Eamon Donoghue.
The penultimate episode, number 9 of 10, jumped out at many like a Blue Scorpion jumping out of the darkness into the light and making everyone who saw it jump during its airing this past Thursday. Season 1, Episode 9, “The Blue Scorpion" seems to be thought of by many as the best one yet. With the exception of everyone named Jeff, Darrell and Robert look down the barrel at the plot points and the heart wrenching, yet sometimes hilarious portrayal of Jeff, by Chris O’Dowd. The hippies movement is contrasted by a handgun that acts like it has a soul, or at least bad intentions. Or does it? Nothing in the Twilight Zone is as it appears, not even a fancy gun that has a bullet with your name on it.
It's been 60 years since The Twilight Zone first aired, with the voice and eventually the face of its creator, Rod Serling. Now, CBS All Access has brought the anthology series back in a new incarnation. This time, the host is Jordan Peele. He is also an executive producer, and the big cast includes Adam Scott, Kumail Nanjiani, Steven Yeun, Chris O'Dowd, Tracy Morgan, Sanaa Lathan, and a whole lot more.

Having already immersed themselves in Irish culture, the ladies of Sex & Studio City felt the need to go all out for St. Patrick’s Day. They discuss the importance of a ‘mid-game’ during a St. Paddy’s day drink sesh, during recovery they watched the very Irish film ‘The Wind that Shakes the Barley,’ and as if that wasn’t enough Irish, Kayley interviewed Irish actor Chris O’Dowd from ‘Bridesmaids.’ Jenny attended a posh, LA event at a boujee home in the hills of Bel Air where she begrudgingly took photos with three hot men wearing only banana hammocks. The girls top off this episode with the dating topic of having specific rules when you first start dating, and end with the classic game, F*CK/MARRY/KILL. With Fever Pitch, About a Boy and High Fidelity, Nick Hornby created a niche penning romantic comedies from the male perspective and launching the crush worthy careers of Hugh Grant, Colin Firth and Jon Cusack on both sides of the pond. Then he went on to prove that he can deftly embody a female lens with the box office hits Wild and Brooklyn and the critically acclaimed Education. Now, Hornby has teamed up with Stephen Frears to tackle marriage from both male and female perspective in their new TV series State of the Union, which stars Rosamund Pike and Chris O’Dowd. In the interview, Hornby discusses the new project, whether philanthropy is harder to pull off in the US than in England, and how Brexit will be the end of everything. He also talks about what he gets out of doing philanthropy and why it is easier to get honest feedback in the film industry than publishing books.

Ken and Kendra give their final synopsis on the holiday known as Thanksgiving and rate their favorite holidays (including the pagan ones). Ken watched the Firm which shockingly features Tom Cruise along with Gene Hackman, Holly Hunter, Ed Harris, and David Strathairn. Kendra gives The Lonely Guy with Steve Martin a quick plug. Kendra reveals the folly of Ken saying golly instead of jolly. She also really tears into a movie on Amazon Prime called One Small Hitch. Ken watched Juliet, Naked and extols the virtues of Ethan Hawke playing a likable screw up and Rose Byrne just doing anything because the woman is an exemplar of talent and spirit. Kendra likes Chris O'Dowd despite Ken not wanting to mention him. And our connection to Peri Gilpin... Rose Byrne was in Juliet, Naked which we talked about. She was also in Neighbors (2014) and Neighbors 2 (2016) with the wonderful Hannibal Buress. Hannibal Buress was in Flock of Dudes (2015) with Peri Gilpin which we have now vowed to watch. We are back this week with only a few things to talk about... but hang on for our picks of scary movies just in time for Halloween! We start off discussing the new standup special from Adam Sandler called 100% Fresh. We gush a little too much about this special as we both loved it so much. Next, Dhani talks about a small movie called Juliet, Naked starring Ethan Hawke, Chris O'Dowd, and Rose Byrne. She enjoyed the story but knows that these types of movies aren't for most people. Then we both revisit Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again because John has been able to watch it now. Since Dhani was so crazy about this movie, she was disappointed that John didn't fall in love so quickly... though he tries to convince her that he did enjoy it. Moving on to TV, Dhani only chose to discuss the BBC and Netflix series Bodyguard. She talks about the twists and turns in unfolding the story. Finally, we decide not to do our usual Actors' Corner this week and instead use the same format to discuss our favorite scary movies. These are the films WE love, like, hate, or haven't seen and not necessarily the scariest or best movies. And since John actually doesn't enjoy horror films, this could get interesting. Adam Sandler: 100% Fresh (1:90) Dhani ★★★★★ John ★★★★★ Juliet, Naked (12:08) ★★★1/2 Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again (19:10) Dhani ★★★★3/4 John ★★★★ Bodyguard (23:40) Scary Movies (31:19)
CHAPTER 8 – When the film world seemed inhabitable, back from grave comes Guest and mockumentary format – this time taking to TV. While some might say this breaks the “Film By Film” mission statement, the 8 episode half hour comedy FAMILY TREE might really just be a long film without an editor. Piling new faces like Chris O’Dowd and Tom Bennett into the Guest-iverse, this wild shaggy dog road trip film sees Guest abroad and home again with heart and GREAT NAMES. Missing in action are Levy, O’Hara, Shearer and more – but can this next generation of faces fill the void? The Christopher Guest List is hosted by Vic Shuttee (@VicShuttee) and Mike Bloom (@AMikeBloomType).
