Wake up, it's a beautiful morning!It's the spring of 1995. That most eclectic of decades, the nineties if you will, was no longer the new kid on the millennial block. Pop culture has boxed up the eighties for another day, had shaken off baggy, was in the process of returning grunge back to the US and was now striding confidently onwards with a swagger all of its own. The country was beginning to look and sound different. The political landscape was shifting towards something ‘new' and felt more relatable, and pop shared this sense of renewed optimism that, actually, anything was possible. Which, of course (you know the script by now) was perfectly represented in the eclectic tracklist of the latest, legendary compilation NOW, That's What I call Music as it reached yet another milestone with volume 30. The cover was new, the graphics were new, and the variously compiled selections represented what the nation was tuning into across TV (possibly with Chris Evans), radio (possibly with Chris Evans) or carrying home from the local music shop (possibly with, eh, no, actually).Springtime was giving us blooming boybands, blossoming Britpop, some classic returning popstars, and a VERY large slice of dancefloor tuneage. In fact, a WHOLE CD of it! Blimey, we were all mad for it, indeed!And, joining me for this poptastic 1995 episode is radio presenter, actor and massive pop tart (his words) Grant Stott.Discover how Grant, alongside Zoe Ball, really did make a big splash in 1995, hosting the BBC network Saturday morning show Fully Booked, alongside plenty of the artists on NOW30 - yes, even Jimmy Nail!Along the way, also discover which pre-NOW compilations inspired Grant's listening (there are some crackers!), how he ended up drunk with the Spice Girls (and the Krankies, but not at the same time, sadly) and laugh as two middle-aged men try and remember Eurovision facts and generally recollect a rather hazy year indeed!Expect starring roles from (amongst others) Janet Jackson, Massive Attack, Pato Banton (on several occasions) Cannon and Ball (!) and a plethora of NOW1 throwback stars.And find out which tracks on NOW30 would make it on to (shameless plug!) Grant's Vinyl Collective show every Friday at 6pm on BBC Radio Scotland. (You're welcome!) Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Juliet and Terence on: Band Aid's latest reincarnation; Zoe Ball out, Scott MIlls in; the (ultimate?) decline of NME and Rolling Stone; toxic fandom; and farewell to Pete Sinfield. {Do collect £200 for Sgt Pepper}
After a very quick diversion round rats learning to drive this week's episode begins with a debate over farmers and inheritance tax – a tax dodge for the affluent or a hit to hard working farmers? Giles leans on his knowledge of the French Revolution and his own experience of tax ‘manoeuvring'. Zoe Ball is stepping down from the Radio 2 breakfast show. Is it really to spend more time with her family or is there more to it than meets the eye? Could the North Koreans be involved...? A possible tip for Apple Inc – admit you were wrong then make more money.And lastly, by eck! What a repertoire of accents. Sadly, not all are allowed past the censor. Hosted on Acast. The October Book of the Month is THE CHAMBER, written by Will Dean. Six experienced saturation divers are locked inside a hyperbaric chamber. Calm and professional, they know that rapid decompression would be fatal and so they work in shifts, breathing helium, and surviving in hot, close quarters. Then one of them is found dead in his bunk. Will Dean grew up in the East Midlands of the United Kingdom. After studying law at the London School of Economics and working in London, he settled in rural Sweden where he built a wooden house in a vast forest, and it's from this base that he compulsively reads and writes. His debut novel, DARK PINES, was selected for Zoe Ball's book club on ITV, shortlisted for the National Book Award (UK), The Guardian's Not the Booker prize, and was named a Telegraph book of the year. He is also the author of THE LAST ONE, FIRST BORN, THE LAST THING TO BURN, which was shortlisted for the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year, and THE CHAMBER. Norman Cook has been a fixture as superstar DJ Fat Boy Slim since the 90s. He started his musical career as part of the band the Housemartins but it was Fat Boy Slim that changed his life. In 1998, his second album "You've Come Along Way Baby" went to number 1, featuring the now classic dance tracks "Praise You”, "Right Here Right Now” and “Rockafeller Skank”. His legendary party Big Beach Boutique II, took place on Brighton beach 20 years ago and made the history books as the biggest outdoor party to have ever taken place in the UK. Sky recently released a documentary about it called “Right Here, Right Now”. Here, Norman talks about that day, his journey to success, family, getting sober and life now. Norman has two children with his ex wife, radio presenter Zoe Ball and still lives in Brighton, where he even served coffee during the pandemic. All hail, Norman Cook.Find out about gigs here: https://www.fatboyslim.net/Changes is a deaf friendly podcast, transcripts can be accessed here: https://www.anniemacmanus.com/changes Hosted on Acast. Johnny Ball is an English television personality, a populariser of mathematics and the father of BBC Radio 2 presenter Zoe Ball.Ball was a regular fixture on children's television from the mid-1970s to the 1980s, presenting several series of science and technology programmes intended for children (including Think of a Number; Think Again; Think Backwards; Think...This Way and Johnny Ball Reveals All). He was also one of the hosts of the preschool programme Play School beginning in 1967 and continuing throughout the 1970s and beyond. As well as appearing on screen Ball wrote jokes for some shows including Crackerjack. All these shows (except the ITV programme ...Reveals All) appeared on the BBC. Ball's shows were known for presenting scientific and technological principles in an entertaining and accessible way for young people.In 2003, he appeared on The Terry and Gaby Show and answered viewers' questions. In July 2004, he was named in the Radio Times list of the top 40 most eccentric TV presenters. In July 2012, he presented a Horizon special on ageing on BBC Four. He has starred in ITV and Channel 4 television adverts and radio adverts for the Yorkshire-based firm Help-Link.In 2012, Ball participated in the Strictly Come Dancing TV show, where he was paired with Aliona Vilani. A training accident in the three-week interval resulted in torn ligaments for Vilani, causing her to retire temporarily from the show. She was replaced by Iveta Lukošiūtė who, with Ball, was eliminated in the first week. Vilani returned in the final group dance alongside Ball. In a TV interview in October 2017, Ball claimed Vilani faked the injury, with Vilani denying the allegation and saying she would take legal advice over Ball's comments. There are no reports that she subsequently took any form of legal action. He was 74 at the time of Strictly, and he is the oldest contestant in the show's history. Hosted on Acast. Nick and Angela welcome presenter and proud Northerner, Vernon Kay. Grimmy and Vernon first met when they presented T4 together back in their TV heydays, and later found themselves on back-to-back, on Saturday mornings on BBC Radio 1 - very challenging time slots for their active social lives. Vernon Kay is best known for iconic TV shows including All Star Family Fortunes, Just the Two of Us and Splash. In 2020 he appeared on I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!, and recently has been covering on This Morning alongside Rochelle Humes. He has switched early morning radio for a late-night show, Dance Sounds of the 90s on BBC Radio 2 and regularly covers Zoe Ball's breakfast show, where he interviewed Nick and Angela when they launched Dish back in June. He is a big red meat fan, so Angela prepares a rich and creamy steak stroganoff, with a mushroom and onion sauce. Nick pours the wine, a delicate Gaia Organic Malbec. In this episode, we hear about Vernon's glory days as a model, his pro tips for barbecuing with your mates, and how he managed to sneak a burner phone into I'm A Celeb! Just so you know, our podcast might contain the occasional mild swear word or adult theme. All recipes from this podcast can be found at waitrose.com/dishrecipes A transcript for this episode can be found at waitrose.com/dish We can't all have a Michelin star chef in the kitchen, but you can ask Angela for help. Send your questions to dish@waitrose.co.uk and she'll try to answer in a future episode. Dish is a Somethin:Else Creative Studio production for Waitrose & Partners.

Will Dean grew up in the East Midlands of the United Kingdom and lived in nine villages before the age of eighteen. After studying law at the London School of Economics and working in London, he settled in rural Sweden where he built a wooden house in a boggy clearing at the center of a vast elk forest, and it's from this base that he compulsively reads and writes. His debut novel, Dark Pines, was selected for Zoe Ball's book club on ITV, shortlisted for the National Book Awards (UK), The Guardian's Not the Booker prize, and was named a Telegraph book of the year. From the acclaimed author of The Last Thing to Burn, a psychological thriller about the dark secrets that emerge when a woman's twin sister is murdered, with his signature “intense, gripping, taut, terrifying, moving, and brilliant” (Lisa Jewell, #1 New York Times bestselling author) prose. Sisters. Soulmates. Strangers. Molly Raven lives a quiet, structured life in London, finding comfort in security and routine. Her identical twin Katie, living in New York, is the exact opposite: outgoing, spontaneous, and adventurous. But when Molly hears that Katie has died, possibly murdered, she is thrown into unfamiliar territory. As terrifying as it is, she knows she must travel across the ocean and find out what happened. But as she tracks her twin's final movements, cracks begin to emerge, and she slowly realizes her sister was not who she thought she was and there's a dangerous web of deceit surrounding the two of them.

On 17th December we had a lovely afternoon tea party for my mums 70th Birthday. All of her 70 something friends were there. We got talking about menopause (obviously) but one lady said "in my day we didn't talk about it, we just got on with it." I flinched but I was grateful for her comment (even though I could sense she thought I was being too open) because it made me realise how far we'd come. 2021 was the year that menopause went mainstream, thanks to celebrities like Davina Macoll, Liz Earl, Meg Matthews and Zoe Ball who are using their reach for something other than personal gain. As we come up to the final days of 2021, I wanted to reflect on what we'd learnt and what might change in 2022 in the menopause world.In this episode I offer you some of those reflections.We touch on:
The Culture Secretary Jeremy Wright MP, who today gave his ‘Value of Culture' speech, in which he set out the government's plans for a multi-million-pound investment in the arts and culture in the UK, discusses his plans to ‘unleash creativity across the nation'.This week the BBC radio schedules saw sweeping change with new presenters at the helm of two breakfast shows. Lauren Laverne takes over from Shaun Keaveny at 6 Music, and Zoe Ball fills the shoes of Chris Evans on the UK's largest breakfast show on Radio 2. Radio critic Susan Jeffreys reviews both shows, as well as BBC Sounds new true crime style drama podcast, The Case of Charles Dexter Ward. Nigerian author Chigozie Obioma has followed his Man Booker shortlisted novel, The Fisherman, with an epic story narrated by the central character's guardian spirit, or Chi. He tells Alex how he wanted An Orchestra of Minorities to explore the Igbo belief system in the way that Milton's Paradise Lost does for Christianity.Presenter: Alex Clark Producer: Sarah JohnsonMain image: Jeremy Wright MP Photo credit: Getty Images
