Some of his other noteworthy roles include the pilled-up narcoleptic Prince Valium in the 1987 Mel Brooks movie Spaceballs, and the "not-quite-out-of-the-closet" character in a dating montage at the beginning of 2001's Kissing Jessica Stein. This week, we're heading down to the basement with no regard for our own well-being as an impromptu theme emerges from our weeks-long run of perfect pictures and Masterpiece Month continues with 2007's Zodiac, directed by David Fincher, written by James Vanderbilt, and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo, Robert Downey Jr., Anthony Edwards, Chloë Sevigny, Elias Koteas, John Carroll Lynch, Brian Cox, Philip Baker Hall, Dermot Mulroney, Donal Logue and Charles Fleischer. It's very much a movie about obsession, the irresistable pull of a puzzle, and has a compelling case as Fincher's best movie. Watching it now, it's almost an ill omen for the cultural obsession with true crime content and podcasts in the years since, but this one manages to explore its gruesome crimes in a way that doesn't feel gratuitous or exploitative -- a tough needle to thread. If you'd like to watch Zodiac before listening to our discussion, it is currently streaming on Paramount+. Other works discussed on this episode include Knives Out, Glass Onion, Mank, Citizen Kane, The Killer, Spy, The Heat, Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Identity Thief, A Simple Favor, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, The Accountant, Twilight, Saint Maud, Ren Faire, The Idea of You, Kissing Jessica Stein, Friends With Kids, Bad Boys, Bad Boys II, Everybody Wants Some!!, Dazed and Confused, Nope, Evil, The X-Files, the music of Maggie Rogers, Summer of Sam, Fight Club, Se7en, Alien3, The Social Network, Panic Room, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Spotlight, Prisoners, Hustle, Iron Man, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Oppenheimer, Succession, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Devs, Twister, Mr. Show, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, Boston Strangler, Cold Case Files, Forensic Files, I'll Be Gone In The Dark, and Accepted, among others. We'll be back next week to wrap up Masterpiece Month with the Wachowskis' magnum opus on what it means to create art under capitalism as we step behind the wheel with Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci and Matthew Fox in 2007's Speed Racer -- a movie that is sadly not available for streaming in Canada currently. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
Reviewing inane comments under Sunny's video "The Problem With Lesbian Romance" https://youtu.be/AkGbysZRB_w?si=Y9jqARsgJTQp6ZWJ & talking about how Renaissance's interpretation of the 2001 lesbian rom-com Kissing Jessica Stein is the one true understanding of the film. Happy pride month! The hot takes for this episode feature a very belated discussion on the Matty Healy x Taylor Swift controversy, our response to a listener's questioning of their own identity as a lesbian, and offering advice on reading difficult texts— basically how to read theory!!! We also discuss our perspectives as POC on the constant presence of white people's racism, with Renaissance's unique view as someone growing up surrounded by white family members. In response to another hot take, we discuss (in the vein of Taylor's dalliances with Matty Healy) the ethics of consuming problematic artists' art— especially as it relates pop music and the film industry and how much whose art you consume reflects your politics. When Woody Allen gets brought up, Sunny reads an excerpt from the novel Post-traumatic by Chantal V. Johnson that features a conversation at a dinner party about discourse surrounding consuming the art of known abusers and rapists. For the shared media analysis portion of this episode, we list and discuss every piece of media present in our queer American literature syllabi, ranging from Willa Cather to Carmen Maria Machado, while also discussing pieces of media such as Audre Lorde's essay collection Sister Outsider, the documentary on depicting transness in Hollywood called Disclosure, and much much more. Michael Bronski's A Queer History of the United States made up many of Sunny's assigned readings for class, and (spoiler alert!!!) very bad lectures and discussions were had in Renaissance's class. At the end of the episode, Renaissance recommends the early 2000s lesbian rom-com Kissing Jessica Stein (2001), and Sunny jointly recommends the film Daisies (1966) and the Jen Beagin novel Big Swiss. With a Broadway career spanning over 50 years, Tovah Feldshuh takes us through her journey as she shares her life as an actress, wife, and mother. While she loves politics, it's her love of people that motivates her to fight for what she believes in and help in every way that she can. Initially determined to go to Harvard Law School to stay close to her father, her brother encouraged her to apply for the McKnight Fellowship in acting and was eventually chosen as one of the four to attend the fellowship. This trajectory change was the beginning of Tovah's pursuit of becoming an actor, which to her is "so much cheaper than therapy". Tovah talks about her role as Mrs. Brice in "Funny Girl" and bringing a level of humanity and relatability to her character, and her memoir, “Lilyville: Mother, Daughter, and Other Roles I've Played” which explores mother-daughter relationships, and her complex relationship with her mother. Married for 46 years, she shares what makes their marriage work. Tovah intends to keep acting for as long as she can, mainly motivated by her love of people and making connections. Tovah Feldshuh is an actress, singer, and playwright who's been a Broadway star for more than four decades now, which earned her Tony Award nominations and two Emmy Award nominations. She made her Broadway debut in the 1973 musical "Cyrrano". Her other stage credits include "Saravá", "Lend Me a Tenor", "Golda's Balcony", “Dreyfus in Rehearsal”, “Lend Me a Tenor”, “Golda's Balcony”, "Irena's Vow", "Pippin", and "Yentl". She made her cabaret debut with her act, "Tovah: Crossovah! From Broadway to Cabaret", followed by "Tovah: Out of Her Mind!" and was selected as Best Cabaret Artist of 2000 by the Boston Globe. Tovah has also appeared in numerous tv shows, including "Ryan's Hope", "Holocaust", "Mariah", "As the World Turns", "Law & Order", "Flesh and Bone", "The Walking Dead", "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend", and "Star Wars Resistance". Her film credits include "Kissing Jessica Stein", "Just My Luck", "She's Funny That Way", and "Armageddon Time". Tovah is currently playing Mrs. Brice in the Broadway revival of "Funny Girl", and is the author of the memoir, “Lilyville: Mother, Daughter, and Other Roles I've Played”. “I started Women in Media in 2010 as a sort of community group. We talked about women above and below the line because there weren't any organizations or conversations really happening about women in the below the line positions, meaning women in the crew who are in the camera, art, grip and electronics departments. There were only conversations happening about more women directors and, being a scenic artist and production designer, I knew that there are so many women in the crew and there's only one director. So if we only aimed for one, we would never get to parity and there would never be room like myself who wanted to advance from these crew positions.”Tema Staig is the Executive Director of Women in Media, a non-profit organization that promotes gender equality in the film and TV industry. What happens when an uptight perfectionist starts to explore her sexuality and the myths rom coms have taught her? Could such a rom com hold up? Join us to unpack the early 2000s classic Kissing Jessica Stein. “Kissing Jessica Stein” is a Classic of Queer Jewish Anxiety by Drew Gregory is the article we reference in our conversation.
NOTE: We had a buffering issue while watching the movie. It’s more likely to cause issues to try and cut around it, so you’ll just have to play along when we say our movie stopped. At last, the callback to the movie after which we named our podcast. Join us as we talk over the namesake of our podcast, the 2001 queer romcom Kissing Jessica Stein (on Starz at the time of recording), starring Jennifer Westfeldt and Heather Juergensen. Despite being from the early 2000s, it really holds up and is utterly delightful in every way. It’s also rated R for some reason we cannot divine. Rental Determination: It is absolutely worth a five dollar rental or a ten dollar purchase. Be advised, there may or may not be some extraneous noises such as mouth sounds, mouth pops, breathing, chair creaking, and the noise you get when you move the mic cable. You’ve been warned. There’s much to marinate on in “Kissing Jessica Stein,” the 2001 bi-curious gem of a romantic comedy that gave us “sexy ugly,” an early Jon Hamm in a small role (to say nothing of Idina Menzel!), Scott Cohen’s great hair and questionable donut eating, a radical Jackie Hoffman nearly stealing the show as best friend Joan, and strong feelings about Jennifer Westfeldt. But most importantly, we get The Bench Scene and Tovah Feldshuh’s oy’ing and kibitzing Judy Stein, a noodge of a mother with a wealth of acting choices and one perfect pause that we can’t stop kvelling over. This one is so bad Dorothy and Vrai couldn't ask anyone else to be involved. It would've been cruel. Yes, marvel at the go-to example of the lesbian phase movie, complete with the myth of "lesbian bed death." It's a real shame this isn't the podcast with the booze. For bonus points, this is quite the snapshot of a pre-9/11 America (oh yes, you bet this is a "New York is the center of the universe' movie).
