Today's episode marks an exciting milestone as we launch a brand new segment called The Sun Dial with the brilliant Rebecca Sun. An acclaimed journalist and cultural critic, she is a guiding light in media commentary, so we are lucky to have her on the show!  There will be MANY hot takes and sun puns, so prepare to bask in her insightful radiance. A sundial is often used metaphorically to represent time's passage, permanence contrasted with change, or natural rhythms versus human-made schedules.  So much of life, of success, is about the perfect balance of kairos meeting chronos; things happening when they are meant to instead of when we want them to. It's quite fitting as we are exploring the evolution of all things…from the show to the industry. A little bit of her impressive bio… Rebecca was the inaugural recipient of the Trailblazer Award at the Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment's salute to women and nonbinary people in Hollywood. Her reporting has won both National Arts & Entertainment and Southern California journalism awards from the Los Angeles Press Club as well as a GLAAD Media Award nomination.  She began her career as a writer and editor at Sports Illustrated, and her bylines have also appeared in The New York Times, Vanity Fair, Esquire China and New York. Most recently, she was the senior editor of diversity and inclusion at The Hollywood Reporter. Rebecca has graciously agreed to give us her hot takes on the top stories in our industry as they flood our inboxes, and, if it weren't obvious enough from that list of credits, there's no one better for the job. As I was setting up the round of interviews that would be our first Women In Comics Feature to celebrate Women's History Month on the podcast, I wanted to get a variety of voices included to represent different facets of the medium. That lead me to reaching out to Barbra Dillon, Editor-In-Chief of Fanbase Press, a GLAAD Winning and Eisner and Harvey Nominated publisher and geek culture website. Who better than Barbra to cover the angle from both the vantage point of a small indy comics publisher as well as comics journalism. Two birds, one stone and I've been meaning to catch up with her since last Fall when their anthology Ripple Effects was crowdfunding which was of considerable interest to me as its focus is to increase awareness of and highlight people with incurable non-visible diseases like myself.   I don't know of another comics journalism outlet that shares such a strongly aligned set of core values like Fanbase does so it was a pleasure to finally get a chance to catch up with her and chat about representation in the medium. Fanbase are celebrating their 15th Anniversary in 2025 and provide a range of unique and diverse programming to support creators in the medium. Please take a moment to check them out if you haven't already. Mission Statement Fanbase Press celebrates fandoms and creates new ones! As a GLAAD Media Award-winning and an Eisner and Harvey Awards-nominated comic book publisher and geek culture website, Fanbase Press produces new and distinctive works, as well as daily reviews, interviews, and podcasts, that span the pop culture spectrum and give voice to the themes, ideals, and people that make geekdom so exceptional. Fanbase Press believes that #StoriesMatter. Acknowledging the importance of stories and the impact of storytelling is at the core of the organization. Universal communication through stories allows us to examine the essentials of human existence, to understand ourselves better and to grow and/or heal, to pass on important values, knowledge, and lessons to the next generation, and to connect with one another through empathy and compassion. Fanbase Press holds a commitment to looking beyond the simple entertainment factor of pop culture storytelling in order to find the value that each story offers to us as individuals, our world, and/or the human condition. The company was founded in 2010 (originally under the name Fanboy Comics) rebranded to Fanbase Press in May 2016 by co-founders Barbra and Bryant Dillon. Fanbase Press' graphic novels, including the 2024 GLAAD Media Award-winning Four-Color Heroes, 2023 Eisner and Harvey Award-nominated Ripple Effects, 2018 Eisner Award-nominated Quince, the 2020 IPPY Award-winning Quince: The Definitive Bilingual Edition hardcover, the 2022 International Latino Book Award-winning Nuclear Power, the 2019 IPPY Award-winning A Geek's Guide to Cross-Stitch: Journeys in Space, the 2014 Bram Stoker Award-nominated Fearworms: Selected Poems, The Sequels, The Margins, The Gamma Gals, Something Animal, Identity Thief, The Arcs, and Penguins vs. Possums, are available online at www.fanbasepress.com. Her work at Marvel includes X-23, Black Widow, Han Solo, Dark Wolverine and Astonishing X-Men. Send us a textAs states across the nation continue to target transgender children, some families flee for safety and refuge.  Some families choose to be as invisible as possible for their safety, and we support and celebrate that.  But other families are choosing to plant their feet and fight back. Today's In the Den guest is a mom from Texas who fought back when the state investigated her and her husband for child abuse for nothing more than supporting their trans child. Special Guest: Amber BriggleAmber Briggle (she/they) is a self-described “mama bear” of a transgender teen in Texas. Amber and her family were investigated by the Texas Department of Family Protective Services for “child abuse” in 2022 after TX Governor Greg Abbott directed the agency to open such cases against families like theirs. Consequently, Amber and her husband, Adam, sued Governor Abbott and are named as co-plaintiffs in PFLAG v Abbott, which seeks to permanently halt these types of investigations.Amber is a founding member and the former national co-chair of the Human Rights Campaign's “Parents for Transgender Equality Council”, and has previously been nominated by the Dallas Morning News as “Texan of the Year”. Along with her family, Amber starred in a nationwide PSA about trans-inclusive families that won a Telly Award and garnered over 300 million views, which she debuted onstage at the GLAAD Media Awards in Hollywood.Amber has written for the Washington Post, Daily Beast, and TIME Magazine, and has been featured in numerous outlets, including Nightline, NHK-Japan, MSNBC, Newsweek, Teen Vogue, The 19th, and People Magazine. She and her family star in Love to the Max, a documentary acquired by the New Yorker, which was released June 2024. Today, I'm chatting with Emmy Award winner Kevin Spirtas about the debut of season 3 of his 6-time Emmy Award-winning digital series, After Forever. The show stars Kevin as Brian and Mitchell Anderson (Doogie Howser, Party of Five) as Jason, a "50-ish" gay couple living in New York City who appear to have it all -- until Jason's untimely death from cancer forces Brian to think about his future and ultimately his mortality, without the love of his life. Season three finds Brian exploring therapy as a means to help him move through his grief while he also attempts to address the idea of dating again. I've known Kevin since our early days pursuing acting in New York City when he was featured in several Broadway productions, including A Chorus Line, Meet Me in St. Louis, and was the official standby for Hugh Jackman in The Boy From Oz. Along the way, daytime TV fans came to know Kevin through his long-running role on Days of Our Lives as “Dr. Craig Wesley.” In 2014, Kevin ran into former Days Of Our Lives writer Michael Slade in a New York gym. Eager to create their own opportunities, the two set out to create a series about gay men over 50. In 2019, After Forever—Season 1 made history by becoming the most Emmy-awarded LGBTQ-themed drama series on any platform. Kevin received an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Digital Drama, along with three additional Emmys that he shares with Michael Slade for Outstanding Digital Drama Series 2019 and Outstanding Writing Team for a Digital Drama in 2019 and 2020. The series was also honored with a special recognition award in 2021 by the GLAAD Media Awards. Season 3 of After Forever is available now on Vimeo. In THE PARROT AND THE IGLOO: Climate and the Science of Denial, now published in paperback, Lipsky explores how “anti-science” became virulent in American life—through the history of climate denial and its consequences. Climate change has become an unavoidable fact and ongoing catastrophe. The science was clear decades ago. How did so many Americans come to doubt evidence so widely accepted and compelling? It is the story of the inventors (Edison, Tesla, Westinghouse) who made our world; the scientists who bravely sounded the climate alarm; and then the hucksters, zealots, dreamers, and crackpots who lied about that science.Find David Lipsky and The Parrot and the Igloo online:The Parrot and the IglooFind me online:This Sustainable Life: Solve For Nature Podcast: https://shows.acast.com/solvefornatureBlog: https://verdantgrowth.blog/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/verdantgrowthTwitter: https://twitter.com/VerdantGrowthFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/realverdantgrowthInstagram: http://instagram.com/verdant.growth or http://instagram.com/verdantgrowthofficial Hosted on Acast. We had the pleasure of interviewing The Scarlet Opera over Zoom video!Soaring higher than ever, buzzing Los Angeles band The Scarlet Opera takes flight on their anticipated new Mirror, Mirror EP out today via SB Projects / Republic Records—listen HERE. Mirror, Mirror celebrates the band's dramatic vocals, magnetic melodies, and stadium-ready swagger. Among many highlights, new track “What Good Is Love” threads fret-burning guitar through otherworldly synths. Frontman Luka Bazulka's jaw-dropping delivery resounds as he wonders, “What good is love?” Then, there's new single “Slutty.” Over a bed of guitar and keys, the verses barely contain the track's flirty fire, as Luka belts, “You make me so slutty.” Cinematic piano sets the tone for “God Damned Beautiful.” It trumpets an essential personal mantra, “The facts are the facts that I'm god damn beautiful.”  On the release of the EP, the band shares: “For better or for worse, this music ended up being a reflection of our trials and tribulations being a band the past few years—the complexities of falling sucker to industry hype men paralleled eerily well to the simultaneous love affairs happening behind the scenes. Mirror, Mirror will always be a poignant reminder for us to keep our circle tight, the romance in the ride and our joy protected, at all costs. More music, sooner.”The Scarlet Opera recently teased Mirror, Mirror with their single “Someone's Gotta Love ‘Em.” On “Someone's Gotta Love ‘Em,” epic guitars resound, cinematic strings soar, and Bazulka emanates the kind of starpower and charisma that comes along once in a generation. The catchy chorus proves instantly chantable as he sets the scene, “I met a bird last night she was drunk at a bar, she said let me introduce you to my friend he's a star.” Met with critical acclaim, Melodic Magazine hailed, “The single is articulate and theatrical with a splash of rock – a perfect way to welcome summer and an exciting and lively addition to the bands' setlist.”It followed the fiery “Catch Me If You Can,” which beyond picking up steam at DSPs, has earned widespread praise. Popdust dubbed it a “captivating, high energy track that kicks off their new era with a bang,” and The Honey Pop proclaimed, “It's your dose of rock-and-roll combined with a mixture of badass lyricism, an intoxicating chorus, and a whole lot of infectious melodies.”Not to mention, they recently wrapped their headlining Catch Me If You Can Tour. Speaking to their standout live performance, RIFF Magazine applauded, “A little bit Queen and a little bit Journey, the band had a cinematic sound with the flair of a Broadway show.” Pit Crew Media noted, “Between their iconic look, over-the-top stage-presence, and quality sound, The Scarlet Opera put on an incredible performance that left fans wanting more,” while The Concert Chronicles praised their live show as “a performance that was nothing short of electrifying.”Last year, the band released their empowering single “That Kind Of Woman” and beloved debut Comedy EP, which features breakout songs “The Place To Be,” “Big City Thing,” “Alive,” and “Riot.” Amassing millions of streams to date, Comedy landed acclaim courtesy of Rolling Stone, Flaunt, LADYGUNN, Jezebel, Just Jared, Queerty, and more, with HITS Daily Double proclaiming, “The Scarlet Opera blends classic arena pomp rock, neon-bright '80s pop and more than a dash of Broadway-style virtuosity into an infectious, gender-blending cocktail that its burgeoning fan base finds utterly intoxicating.” Not to mention, the band received a nomination for “Breakthrough Music Artist” at the 2024 GLAAD Media Awards.ABOUT THE SCARLET OPERA:Fusing the grandeur of the theatre with the raw energy of rock and roll, The Scarlet Opera – a five piece band hailing from Los Angeles – offers an escape into the throes of love, lust, glamour, and passion. Formed as ‘Perta' in 2016 and reborn in 2022, The Scarlet Opera is led by lyricist and frontman Luka Bazulka, whose authentic narrative and vocal prowess are matched only by the musical talents of band members Colin Kenrick [keyboard], Daniel Zuker [bass], Justin Siegal [drums], and Chance Taylor [guitar]. The band's origins are tied to one fateful night when Colin, upon witnessing Luka perform an inspiring solo vocal set, enlisted longtime friends and seasoned musicians Daniel, Chance, and Justin to provide a new dimension to what was already brimming with potential. Word of packed venues and a captivating live show soon drew the attention of SB Projects and Republic Records, who turned to hit songwriter and producer David Stewart [BTS, Jonas Brothers] to collaborate, inspire, and further ignite an already growing fire. During 2023, the group took flight with their debut Comedy EP uplifted to soaring heights by breakout singles “Alive” and “Riot.” In its wake, they made their late-night television debut on The Late Late Show with James Corden and launched a successful tour earmarked by one sold out gig after another, with Jezebel hailing their live show as “a spectacle of Queen-inspired proportions.” Along the way, they incited further critical praise from Rolling Stone, Flaunt, HITS Daily Double, Popdust, LADYGUNN, and The Honey Pop, who applauded them as “one of our favorite bands.” After receiving a nomination for “Breakthrough Music Artist” at the 2024 GLAAD Media Awards and headlining a tour across the country this past spring, The Scarlet Opera now level up again with the dramatic and dynamic Mirror, Mirror EP, including the singles “Catch Me If You Can” and “Someone's Gotta Love ‘Em.”We want to hear from you! When the adults in your life are this reckless and dangerous, what do you do? Today we meet Rex Ogle and we're talking about the book that saved his life: Running with Scissors by Augusten Burroughs.Rex Ogle is an award-winning author and the writer of nearly a hundred children's books, comics, graphic novels, and memoirs—most notably Free Lunch, which won the ALA/YALSA award for Excellence in Non-Fiction. He has written under several pseudonyms, including Trey King and Honest Lee, but is currently focused on reimagining classic literature as modern or fantastical graphic novels as REY TERCIERO, under which he penned bestselling Meg, Jo, Beth, & Amy, as well as Northranger, nominated for both a Harvey and GLAAD Media Award.Running with Scissors is the true story of a boy whose mother (a poet with delusions of Anne Sexton) gave him away to be raised by her psychiatrist, a dead-ringer for Santa and a lunatic in the bargain. Suddenly, at age twelve, Augusten Burroughs found himself living in a dilapidated Victorian in perfect squalor. The doctor's bizarre family, a few patients, and a pedophile living in the backyard shed completed the tableau. Here, there were no rules, there was no school. The Christmas tree stayed up until summer, and Valium was eaten like Pez. And when things got dull, there was always the vintage electroshock therapy machine under the stairs.Connect with Rexwebsite: rexogle.cominstagram: @thirdrexsubstack: substack.com/@thirdrexOur BookshopVisit our Bookshop for  new releases, current bestsellers, banned books, critically acclaimed LGBTQ books, or peruse the books featured on our podcasts: bookshop.org/shop/thisqueerbookTo purchase Running With Scissors visit: https://bookshop.org/a/82376/9780312422271To purchase Free Lunch visit: https://bookshop.org/a/82376/9781324016946Become an Associate Producer!Become an Associate Producer of our podcast through a $20/month sponsorship on Patreon! Balazs was born in Hungary and now lives in Scotland and I was fascinated to learn about his journey in comics as well as why he loves to combine the supernatural and music. Wolfpitch is published by Top Shelf Productions an imprint of IDW publishing. You can find it at your local comic shop on June 12th. I'm always interested in learning how creators got to where they are today and what has influenced them to make the comics they do. I found Balazs to be open and friendly and funny and I can't wait to read more of his comics.   Here is a synopsis of Wolfpitch: All's fair in love and music when this supernatural all-girl rock band must beat the odds and become the best band in town! Izzy's a bass-playing werewolf. Geraldine's the ghost of an amazing jazz pianist. Delilah's the meanest drummer in town. They'd be the perfect trio to win the Battle of Bands... except Geraldine can't play a solo since she passed away, and Izzy and Delilah are at each other's throats at every opportunity. Can they work through their problems to win the competition, or will they be defeated by Delilah's ex-band and their villainous frontman, Dylan? Just a few hours before George Floyd was murdered, Christian Cooper was birdwatching in Central Park when he was the victim of a white woman who attempted to weaponize race and policing against him. The video of the event went viral, and luckily Christian was able to leave the area before police arrived, and is here with us today. His new book, Better Living Through Birding: Notes from a Black Man in the Natural World, is now available to order. “Christian Cooper's book is every bit as wondrous and captivating as the birds he so adores—a joyous tour across subcultures and continents, and a masterful account of a life full of song, full of heart, and fully lived.”—Ed Yong, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of An Immense World “An uplifting and inspiring read. Christian Cooper is a national treasure.”—Van Jones, New York Times bestselling author and host of The Van Jones Show “Utterly captivating, a marvel of storytelling . . . Christian Cooper's memoir is tender, honest, funny, wise, poignant, piercing, and infused with brilliant observations on the nature of birds, humans, and his own extraordinary personal journey.”—Jennifer Ackerman, New York Times bestselling author of The Genius of Birds “I cannot think of a better guide to teach us all to slow down, look, listen, and grab our binoculars than Cooper, a self-described Black queer nerd, who delivers the best nature bath ever, in lyrical, lush, relatable prose.”—Brittney Cooper, PhD, New York Times bestselling author of Eloquent Rage “Funny, brave, kind, and eagle-eyed, Cooper brings into focus not only the spectacular winged creatures he loves, but also the glorious messiness, prejudice, courage, and passion of our own species—and how birding can show us all how to lead better lives.”—Sy Montgomery, author of How to Be a Good Creature “Read this book if you want to discover the joys, struggles, and magic of birding, but even more because it's a book about the joys, struggles, and magic of life. Christian Cooper is a brilliant storyteller who manages to pack history, science, and sociology—with just the right amount of laugh-out-loud sass—into his powerful memoir. This book soars!”—Juli Berwald, author of Spineless “Christian Cooper writes with passion and honesty—even about that Central Park run-in and media storm, which he handled with aplomb. Birders are fortunate to have Mr. Cooper as a spokesperson for the modern age.”—Noah Strycker, author of Birding Without Borders “In addressing the Central Park incident, [Cooper] elegantly frames it within both his own bird-focused narrative and a broader conversation about racism and police brutality. . . . This rewarding memoir adds heft and heart to the headlines.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review) About the Author Christian Cooper is a science and comics writer and editor and the host and consulting producer of Extraordinary Birder on National Geographic. One of Marvel's first openly gay writers and editors, Cooper introduced the first gay male character in Star Trek, in the Starfleet Academy series, which was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award.
