We cried, we laughed and we told stories... this episode with guest Shanna Jackman is filled with emotion and information. Along her road performing music, Shanna has worn many hats including a reserve police officer and dispatcher for her local police department. Her dedication to public service is second to none! She even has a tribute song that she co-wrote that is dedicated to Public Safety Dispatchers (first responders) that has surpassed 3 Million views. Shanna, Lance Carpenter and Ayla Brown wrote "Answer The Call" to honor those that are calmly there when you need them during your most critical moments.   The emotional roller coaster that Shanna went through during our interview was hard for John and Mark to watch.  Shanna was very close to Paul Monti a Gold Star Father. Paul passed away at the age of 76 just days before we sat down. If you don't know the story, here you go... Massachusetts native, US Army Sergeant First Class Jared Monti, died while serving in Afghanistan in 2006. Jared was awarded the Medal of Honor in 2009. Jared's father, Paul, has driven Jared's truck since his death as a way to remember and feel connected to him. Paul's story inspired the 2013 #1 Country Song recorded by Lee Brice, “I Drive Your Truck” written by Jessi Alexander, Connie Harrington, and Jimmy Yeary. The truck, a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 V8 became a symbol of a father's love and a place would take friends for rides and tell the story of Jared's life. Shanna was fortunate to be able to spend time riding in the truck with Paul. Shanna and Paul became friends through their shared experiences supporting The Gold Star Families and all military memorial organizations.   Shanna Jackman, while known for her many performances of the National Anthem (for the Boston Bruins, Red Sox, Celtics, Revolution and many other numerous charity, Military and sporting events), is also a Nashville recording artist having released her first self titled EP in 2013. Shanna has had the opportunity to be featured with artists such as Ronnie Dunn, Blake Shelton, Sara Evans, Gretchen Wilson, Dierks Bentley, Alan Jackson, Darryl Worley, Lee Brice, Little Big Town, Collin Raye, Jo-Dee Messina, and Steve Azar. Check out "In My Truck" and hear a true story about her Ford F150 and how this girl left her ex in a cloud of dust!  Listen in to Episode 16 and hear some great stories from Shanna and hear some advice for aspiring artists.  Find more about Shanna at https://shannajackman.com/home. Montreal's Manny Blu is getting ready to release his new EP DEViL on August 20th. The project features five songs written by some of Nashville's best writers including Ryan Beaver, Jessi Alexander, JT Harding, Brinley Addington, Anthony Smith, Michael Hardy, Craig Wiseman, Aaron Eshuis, Joe Clemmons and Logan Wall. Featured on the album is the single "Valet" featuring fellow Montreal artist Brittany Kennel released in early July. “Valet” tells the story of a couple falling in love while experiencing some of the most cherished Nashville spots, romanticizing the place that Manny now calls home.   While definitely one of the most traditional country-sounding songs found on DEViL, Manny continues to push his punk-inspired mentality forward by embracing the fact that an acoustic country ballad is the perfect, unexpected addition to the EP tracklist. Being a former hockey player & MMA fighter, Manny knows that when the going gets tough, the tough get going. So when Covid derailed live shows, he launched his own live performance series Live & Turned Up on his Official YouTube page. The series "Live & Turned Up" finds Manny performing a mix of original songs, fan favourites, and unexpected covers. Manny describes the new EP as “an ensemble of songs that have a variety of skill sets and sides of me as an artist that I haven't shown before, and is probably the most complete project I've released to date. I think DEViL has elements that call back to what I've released before and what I have coming next.” With the EP's singles "Train" and "Valet already released, Manny just dropped a third single, the weekend party anthem "Circle Up" featuring singer-songwriter Blaine Holcomb lending his vocal talents to it.

Well, it’s CMA Fest week, and for the first time in my literal lifetime, it’s not happening. We all hate it; Nashville hates it; country fans hate it. But in spite of missing our favorite Broadway weekend of the year, we’ve got one of the city’s most genuine, successful, talented female singer/songwriters with us today to talk all things music, creativity, and, you guessed it, Enneagram. You may not know Jessi Alexander, but you absolutely know her music. Born in Jackson, TN to what she calls a “blue collar but richly creative family,” music, particularly country music, captivated Jessi as a West Tennessee kid. She’s since been in Nashville for 20 years and has been a Grammy nominee as well as a CMA & ACM song of the year award winner. She’s written with and for a countless number of top tier recording artists, a few of which you might recognize: Miley Cyrus, 2009, "The Climb"      In her early twenties, Jessi found herself at rock bottom, struggling to keep her contract as a songwriter all while being her mother’s primary care taker as she battled and eventually passed away from ovarian cancer. She gives us the miraculous inside scoop on how this chart-topping, cross-genre hit of her lament and hopelessness in almost giving up her career actually buoyed her back into the success she’s sustained for the past decade. “I still marvel at that song and feel so blessed to be a part of it,” she humbly admits. She even taught Miley how to play it on guitar. Blake Shelton, 2012/2013, "Drink on It" & "Mine Would Be You" She shares the depth of hers and Blake’s long-lasting working relationship, collaborations, as well as a testament to his rich humor and generous humanity that all of us hoped was true. Turns out, it is! Lee Brice, 2012, "I Drive Your Truck"         One of the pinnacle works of her career, “I Drive Your Truck” is an anthem to any who have lost loved ones. Though not first penned to honor her mother, Jessi says the great impact of the song came simply because its contents are “so the guts of me and of the other co-writers.” The hurt is real, and the story’s truth of how to love, remember, and connect with those who have passed in the beauty of the mundane speaks to any heart in, any phase of grief.  We celebrate how writing or being creative in any form is such a beautiful and crucial vehicle to process our hardships. “Even in this [pandemic] hardship, music can keep us steady. It’s a refuge.” We hit on the history and huge importance of gutsy, truthful storytelling in country music. We even talk through what the enneagram requires of us (at least for Jessi and I) as doers and storytellers and relational people living life as a 3 in quarantine.  Finally we want to remind ourselves of our responsibility as music lovers to support these committed songwriters and artists during very trying economic times. Go buy their music – not just for your own guaranteed pleasure, but to play your part in sustaining their careers and their families’ income. She's a hitmaker behind the scenes who rarely surfaces with her own heartfelt country music, but she sure does so on Decatur County Red, anchored in stories of her Tennessee coming-of-age. Jill Andrews is more urbane and silky in her sound, but the personal journey she shares on the album and book Thirties is full of challenges and the clarity that comes with time and triumph.
