Today's Song of the Day is “Plant (feat. Mabe Fratti)” from Efterklang's album Things We Have In Common, out now.
Born in Guatemala but active in Mexico City's bustling music scene, cellist, electronic music producer, and singer Mabe Fratti has been making music for several years that could lean toward the experimental and the avant-garde on the one hand, and what seems to be a flair for pop melodies on the other. She writes songs that encompass chamber music, electronic music, soundscapes, and hard rock, -perhaps with jazz overtones- without ever settling into any one of them. Fratti and her collaborators have such talent for risk-taking, for playfulness with sound and its manipulation, and for endless riffs - whether cello (amplified and with pedals) or vocal processors, and artfully using feedback, field recordings, and loops. Her latest album is called Sentir que no Sabes, or Feel like you don't know. Mabe Fratti and her trio play some of these songs in-studio. - Caryn Havlik Set list: 1. Quieras o No 2. Kravitz 3. Oidos
On today's episode, I talk to musician Mabe Fratti. Originally from Guatemala, Mabe studied cello from a young age, but was on a path to become a journalist before a Goethe Institute residency took her to Mexico to work on her music. There she got involved in the Mexico City improvisational music scene. Mabe produced her first album Pies Sobre La Tierra in 2019, which was followed by Será Que Ahora Podremos Entendernos in 2021, Se Ve Desde Aquí in 2022, and her latest Sentir Que No Sabes was just released in June on Unheard of Hope, and folks, it's fantastic! This week we welcome, from The Branson Famous Baldknobbers, Kendall Parrett! In 1959, Mabe brothers Bob, Bill, Lyle, and Jim began performing twice a week in a converted roller skating rink on the Lake Taneycomo lakefront to entertain visiting fishermen at night. The brothers combined popular country tunes with Ozark Mountain music and threw in a dash of comedy to entertain audiences. Their instruments were simple like: the washtub bass, banjo, Dobro, and a mule's jawbone for rhythm. Little did they know in the late 1950's that they would become the founding fathers of Branson's music show industry. The brothers combined popular country tunes with Ozark Mountain music and threw in great, hillbilly comedy to entertain growing Branson audiences. In 1969, the Baldknobbers, as the brothers called themselves, built a theater on Highway 76, making their act the longest continuously running show in town. From their humble beginnings, they began growing in popularity and size, eventually converting an old skating rink into Branson's first live- entertainment theatre. Now 63 years later, the big-red curtain raises every night at 8pm to entertain Branson visitors. You can check out the Branson Famous Baldknobbers at their website: Balknobbers.com, or call their theatre at 417-231-4999.

"On the show this time, it's the avant songwriting of cellist Mabe Fratti. Mabe Fratti is a composer and cellist, born in Guatemala and now living in Mexico City. She is a rare bird - a cello player who also sings, who actually sings while playing the cello. Her music is harmonically complex, rhythmically intrepid, and doesn't shy away from dissonance. Against this backdrop she creates out of the ordinary melody - often surprisingly catchy. She creates honestly, and - very closely with her chosen family of musicians. She would say they work “softly” with lots of room for improvisation and the musical personality of each player, of each friend. Her latest “Se Ve Desde Aqui” is available on Unheard of Hope records."
