In this episode I sit down with "Rowdy" Rob Williford. Rob played guitar and wrote hits with Luke Combs since Luke got his start just up until last December when he retired to focus more on songwriting and his own project. We are going to dive into life on the road with Luke and talk about the stories behind the massive hits Rob wrote for Luke like "One Number Away," "Doin This," and "Nothin But You." So far Rob has written 8 songs that have been recorded by Luke Combs along with other incredible songs recorded by Wheeler Walker Jr. and Kameron Marlowe. Rob has also been nominated and won several awards: 2018 ASCAP Song of the Year for "One Number Away", 2019 ACM Song of the Year Nominee for "Beautiful Crazy", 2019 CMA Song of the Year Winner for "Beautiful Crazy", 2020 NSAI Multiplatinum Songwriter Award, 2021 Grammy Nomination (Best Country Solo Performance) for "Forever After All", 2021 CMA Song of the Year Nominee for "Forever After All", 2022 Music Row Song of the Year Nominee for "Doin' This" and his recent Grammy nomination for Best Country Song "Doin' This." Nicolle is the unicorn of the music business, she has it all. She's beautiful, oozing with passion and talent, fiercely committed to her family and friends, and oh yeah, happens to be one of the most successful songwriters in Country Music.  She's won ACM Song of the Year twice w Miranda Lambert's “Automatic” and Dan and Shay's “Tequila,” plus written multiple other #1 hits.  She's been on “The Voice,” and has an exhibit in The Country Music Hall of Fame.  But what I love most about Nicolle is her raw, honest heart. Yes her life appears perfect, but she's not scared to fail, or talk about her insecurities, struggles and the ups and downs of daily life. I love how she views fear and failure, and why she's not afraid to own her worth.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

You know his music, you just might not know you know his music. If you love Lainey Wilson's "Things a Man Oughta Know," you'll love this episode. Jason wrote that song and many other hits. He joined Gary in this week's episode to share stories behind his songs, stories from when he was growing up, and much more.In this episode:"Things a Man Oughta Know"The song idea that came up during the interviewHis new song Mary WannaPushing through fearJobs he had on the way upSleeping in his carWhat songs with minor chords doWhy he never looks at the chartsThe best kind of sad songAbout Jason:Born in Nashville and raised in South Mississippi, Jason Nix grew up on a blend of his musical father's Bluegrass and his mother's love of Motown while introducing his own passion for Classic Rock into the mix. It's no surprise then that his return to Music City just after high school led to the creation of a sound all his own, driven by his strengths as both a guitar player and a lyricist. 17 years later, having established himself as an award-winning, in-demand songwriter and earning cuts from artists ranging from Keb' Mo' to Lainey Wilson (including the recent ACM Song of the Year “Things A Man Oughta Know”), Nix now presents himself as a must-hear artist with brand-new release “Mary Wanna.” Written by Nix together with Driver Williams as the first in a series of concept songs coming soon, the song introduces the free-spirited character of Mary while also introducing Nix himself. “I had ‘Mary Wanna' written down as a title for a long time before I pitched it in a write, because I wanted to save it to write with Driver Williams,” notes Nix. “From the word ‘go,' or in this case, ‘Mary,' I never wanted the song to be about marijuana. I remember how fast the song fell out, and as I started working on the demo, I didn't want to stop. We wound up using most of the parts I recorded in that 12x12 guest bedroom on the actual record.”“‘Mary Wanna' is the song that got my wheels turning again on releasing music as a solo artist. I love the way it makes me feel,” he adds. “I've always wanted to a concept album and ‘Mary Wanna' paints a very clear picture of what Mary's role will be in this story. She's a rebel who feels trapped by her parents' idea of who she should be; she feels smothered by her community's expectations of how a young woman should act. She is desperately looking for the freedom to find out who she is, even if it means breaking some hearts along the way. This song is the cornerstone for a project I didn't realize I was starting at the time and was born from a personal experience that I never intended to write about. Mary gave me the opportunity to write about the things I've been holding onto for years.”https://www.jasonnixmusic.com

As the writer of songs including Brooks and Dunn's “Believe” to Blake Shelton's “Boys ‘Round Here” to Morgan Wallen's “Chasin' You”, he has amassed over 350 cuts, 130 singles, and 29 #1's. After moving to Nashville in 1985 to pursue a career in songwriting, he received his first chart success after having co-written “The Only One” from Roy Orbison's album, Mystery Girl. In 1990, our guest signed his first publishing deal with Almo/Irving Music, and ten years later, he signed with BMG Music Publishing. In 2003, he opened his own publishing company, and within the first year of the independent company's operation, he experienced the first single of the catalog; “Live Like You Were Dying” by Tim McGraw not only peaked at the top of the charts for ten weeks, but it also was named NSAI Song of the Year, CMA Song of the Year, ACM Song of the Year and won the Grammy Award for Best Country Song. SUMMARY:Our guest on this episode of Songcraft is Natalie Hemby, a six-time Grammy nominee and two-time winner who has earned five CMA Song of the Year nominations and was named Music Row magazine's 2021 Female Songwriter of the Year. Her songs have been recorded by Kacey Musgraves, Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, Maren Morris, Ed Sheeran, Sheryl Crow, Dierks Bentley, Eli Young Band, Kelly Clarkson, Chris Isaak, Blake Shelton, Lee Ann Womack, and many others. We last spoke with Natalie in 2017, but we catch up with her today to find out more about her life as a behind the scenes songwriter, her work with supergroup The Highwomen, and her critically-acclaimed solo album Pins and Needles. PART ONE - 2:49Scott and Paul chat about Pearl Snap Studios and set the stage for this very special "old friends" episode.PART TWO - 6:02They guys welcome longtime friend and fellow music geek David Manning to argue about beloved songs that they actually hate. PART THREE - 39:20Our in-depth conversation with Natalie HembyABOUT NATALIE HEMBY:When we first spoke with Natalie Hemby in 2017 she'd already racked up three CMA Song of the Year nominations and written a half dozen #1 singles, including “Pontoon” and “Tornado” by Little Big Town, “Downtown” by Lady A, “You Look Like I Need a Drink” by Justin Moore, and Miranda Lambert's “White Liar” and “Automatic,” the latter of which was named ACM Song of the Year and snagged Natalie her first Grammy nomination for Best Country Song. In the five years since then, her songwriting star has continued to rise. She co-wrote three songs on Kacey Musgraves' Golden Hour, which won the Grammy for Album of the Year—across all categories—and earned Natalie a CMA Song of the Year nomination for “Rainbow.” Natalie co-wrote two songs with Lady Gaga for the soundtrack to A Star is Born, including Song of the Year Grammy nominee “Always Remember Us This Way” and the Grammy winner for Best Song Written for Visual Media, “I'll Never Love Again.” She has scored additional #1 hits with Jon Pardi's “Heartache Medication,” as well as Miranda Lambert's “Bluebird,” which was nominated for both CMA and ACM Song of the Year, and the Best Country Song Grammy. Natalie beat herself in that Grammy category when she won the Best Country Song honors for “Crowded Table,” which she wrote with Lori McKenna and Brandi Carlile. The song was recorded by the supergroup The Highwomen, of which Natalie is a member alongside Carlile, Marren Morris, and Amanda Shires. “Crowded Table” was also named Song of the Year by the Americana Music Association, while The Highwomen won Americana Album of the Year and Duo or Group of the Year. Recent pop cuts, including Kelly Clarkson's “I Dare You” and Ed Sheeran's “Love in Slow Motion,” illustrate Natalie's versatility and underscore why she was named Music Row magazine's 2021 Female Songwriter of the Year. In addition to her work with The Highwomen, Natalie's been flexing her considerable artist muscles recently with the release of her album Pins and Needles, which PopMatters calls “a phenomenal album from an artist coming into full possession of her gifts.”

From his early days of writing and drumming in Hattiesburg, Mississippi to being crowned Songwriter of the Century by ASCAP, he has indeed created for himself a monumental platform in the history of country music. As the writer of songs including Brooks and Dunn's “Believe” to Blake Shelton's “Boys ‘Round Here”, Wiseman has amassed over 350 cuts, 125 singles, and 27 #1's. After moving to Nashville in 1985 to pursue a career in songwriting, he received his first chart success after having co-written “The Only One” from Roy Orbison's album, Mystery Girl. In 1990, Wiseman signed his first publishing deal with Almo/Irving Music, and ten years later, he signed with BMG Music Publishing. In 2003, Wiseman opened his own publishing company, and within the first year of the independent company's operation, Wiseman experienced the first single of the catalog; “Live Like You Were Dying” by Tim McGraw not only peaked at the top of the charts for ten weeks, but it also was named NSAI Song of the Year, CMA Song of the Year, ACM Song of the Year and won the Grammy Award for Best Country Song. In 2012, Wiseman co-founded Big Loud's management division, the launchpad of Florida Georgia Line, followed by Big Loud Records in 2015. Wiseman's success has continued to escalate at exponential levels throughout the years. He was proclaimed ASCAP's “Songwriter of the Year” in 2003, 2005, and 2007 in addition to being named “Writer of the Year” by NSAI and Music Row in 1997. In 2009, he received the impressive honor of NSAI's “Songwriter of the Decade” and won the 2014 Heritage Award from ASCAP as the most performed country songwriter of the century. Following those years of success, hard work & accomplishments, Wiseman was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in October of 2015. In 2017, Wiseman was honored with a CMA Triple Play Award for FGL's “Anything Goes” & Blake Shelton's “Gonna” & “Came Here To Forget.” Although his accomplishments are nothing less than extraordinary, Wiseman's talents and endeavors extend far beyond the field of songwriting. As a complement to Tim McGraw's “Live Like You Were Dying”, Wiseman co-wrote a book with the same title, which topped the New York Times Best Seller list in 2004. Additionally, he co-wrote the book A Baby Changes Everything in 2008, in conjunction with Faith Hill's #1 single. The following year, Wiseman starred in a reality TV show, The Hitmen of Music Row, which aired on GAC. For the past 15 years, Wiseman has hosted The Stars of Second Harvest Show at the Ryman, showing his philanthropic heart and giving all proceeds to the Second Harvest Food Bank Of Middle Tennessee. To date, this musical event has raised more than $1.5 million for the food bank. Frenchie's then-frontman Shooter Jennings parents were gently stirring awake a house full of late-night partiers, and then Jessi made breakfast for their guests. “It was surreal,” recalls Frenchie, who describes posing for a photo while sitting on Buddy Holly's 1958 Ariel Cyclone motorcycle – a gift to Waylon from the Crickets on his 40th birthday. “Just two months earlier, I had been in L.A. with a backpack and $200, answering ads for ‘guitar player wanted.'” After a late-night jam session in L.A., Frenchie was approached by Shooter's drummer Lex Lipsitz, a native of Waco, Texas. Their hard-rock band Stargunn needed a guitarist just like him, Lex told him, so Frenchie went down to their rehearsal space at the corner of Hollywood and Vine to audition on the spot. “After about 15 minutes, Shooter asked me where I lived and I told him it was at a youth hostel a few blocks away. He said, ‘Nah, you're living with us at the band house from now on' and they took me down to get my stuff.” ✅ LONE STAR DRY GOODS (podcast partner info & links) A truly unique shopping experience geared towards men. Surviving the Music Industry

Most recently Randall released a collaborative project called The Marfa Tapes with Miranda Lambert and Jack Ingram. Marfa, Texas is a particularly special place for these writers, allowing them to decompress and write vulnerably together, a perfect example being their ACM Song of the Year “Tin Man.” This record is a collection of songs the trio wrote together over various trips to Marfa, encapsulated in raw and honest live recordings. In conversation, Randall shares what he thinks when attacking a project as a songwriter versus a producer. His challenges with the business as label deals that looked so good on paper have fallen through. Amazing, one-of-a-kind stories that include Emmylou Harris, Sam Bush, Jerry Rice, Guy Clark, Vince Gill, and so much more from his 4-decade career.

In the 1970s, Hubbard wrote “Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother,” first made famous by Jerry Jeff Walker's 1973 recording.  In 1976, he signed with Warner Bros. Not to mention his years as a sheet metal worker by day and playing Honkey Tonks at night in and around his hometown of San Antonio, Texas.  In the mid-seventies when the country pop Kenny Rogers, John Denver and the outlaw sound of Waylon and Willie was the rage, along came the traditionalist Moe Bandy. The Texas singer with twin fiddles and steel guitar in the band kept Texas-style Honkey Tonk music alive, but it wasn't easy. In 1972 Moe met record producer Ray Baker on a hunting trip and convinced him to listen to some demo tapes he had made. Baker agreed to produce Moe if he was willing to pay for recording session. Moe agreed and out of that session came Moe's first hit song "I just Started Hatin Cheatin' Songs Today".  GRC records picked up the song and released it nationally where it became a top 20 hit and that was just the beginning. Moe followed up with "It Was Always So Easy (To Find An Unhappy Woman)" and his first #1 hit "Bandy The Rodeo Clown". His songs never strayed far from the traditionally Honky Tonk fare. Loving, cheating, drinking and patriotic songs formed the core of his music.Moe continues to perform to packed houses all over the world.  More than anything else Moe loves to perform for his countless fans.  Be sure to check out Moe's website MoeBandy.com because he just might be coming to a town near you!  Also, make sure you get a copy of his autobiography, "Moe Bandy - Lucky Me".  "When I look back on my life, 'Lucky Me' really sums it all up.  I am lucky to have had all the success that I've enjoyed.  And I am lucky to still be here.  After you read my life story, you'll agree that I am very lucky!  I am very blessed", said Moe.For Moe's complete tour schedule visit MoeBandy.com or MoeBandyBook.com.

Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee Rodney Crowell joins Scott to chat about a remarkable career that has yielded classic songs such as “Til I Gain Control Again,” “I Ain’t Living Long Like This,” “Ashes By Now,” “After All This Time,” and “Shame on the Moon.” EPISODE DETAILS: PART ONE  Scott and Paul chat about their friends at Pearl Snap Studios, Paul's recent ASCAP award, the Ken Burns Country Music documentary, a sad loss in the songwriting community, and how an encounter with Rodney Crowell made an impression on Paul when he was in fifth grade.  PART TWO - 12:03 mark Scott gets together with Rodney Crowell to hear why Townes Van Zandt stealing his girlfriend led to his first cut as a songwriter; how he went from making $7 a night and living in his car to landing a publishing deal; why he told his wife to take her time bailing him out of jail so he could write one of his now-classic songs; how getting rejected by Anne Murray led to getting discovered by Emmylou Harris; the song he realized he inadvertently ripped off when writing “Ashes By Now;” the reason he decided to re-write one of his most classic songs years after it had become a hit; the song he and Rosanne Cash wrote that he still wishes she’d record; how he co-wrote a song with Roy Orbison from beyond the grave; why he now regrets speaking out about covers of his songs he didn’t particularly like; which of his recent compositions he calls one of the best songs he’s ever written; and why he feels like he didn’t find his voice and become a real recording artist until his tenth album.   ABOUT RODNEY CROWELL Emmylou Harris—who once employed Rodney Crowell as the guitarist, harmony singer, and arranger in her legendary Hot Band—introduced many listeners to Crowell’s songs, which then went on to become hits for other artists. “Til I Gain Control Again” was covered by Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Bobby Bare before Crystal Gaye took it to the top of the country charts. “Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight” and “I Ain’t Living Long Like This” became number one hits for The Oak Ridge Boys and Waylon Jennings, respectively. “Even Cowgirls Get the Blues” went on to become a hit for both Lynn Anderson and the duo of Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings, while “Ashes By Now” became a Top 5 single for Lee Ann Womack before going on to be covered by Etta James.     While it was Harris who first shone the spotlight on Crowell, he soon established his own successful artist career, becoming the first country singer to earn five number-one hits from a single album. His biggest self-penned singles as an artist include “It’s Such a Small World,” “She’s Crazy for Leaving,” “Many a Long and Lonesome Highway,” “If Looks Could Kill,” “Lovin’ All Night,” “What Kind of Love,” “I Couldn’t Leave You If I Tried,” which was nominated for a Best Country Song Grammy, and “After All This Time,” which was nominated for both CMA and ACM Song of the Year and won a Grammy for Best Country Song. Crowell songs that have become number one hits for other artists include Bob Seger’s recording of “Shame on the Moon,” The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s “Long Hard Road (The Sharecropper’s Dream),” “Somewhere Tonight” by Highway 101, Tim McGraw’s recording of “Please Remember Me” and Keith Urban’s cover of “Making Memories of Us.” Additional highlights of his catalog include Vince Gill’s Top 10 recording of “Oklahoma Borderline”; “Stars on the Water,” which has been recorded by Jimmy Buffett and George Strait; “Voila an American Dream,” which has been recorded by Guy Clark and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band; and “Song for the Life,” which was recorded by Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kathy Mattea, and Alison Krauss before becoming a Top 10 hit for Alan Jackson. As a producer, Crowell was behind a string of hits for then-wife Rosanne Cash, including “Seven Year Ache,” “Ain’t No Money,” which he wrote, and “I Don’t Know Why You Don’t Want Me,” which he and Rosanne co-wrote and which earned him his first of sixteen Grammy nominations. Crowell has since been honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award in Songwriting from the Americana Music Association, the prestigious ASCAP Founder’s Award, the Academy of Country Music’s Poet’s Award, and induction into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame   In recent years Crowell has become an Americana darling with critically-acclaimed albums such as The Houston Kid, Fate’s Right Hand, The Outsider, Sex and Gasoline, and a pair of duet albums with Emmylou Harris, Old Yellow Moon and The Traveling Kind. His latest album is called Texas.

PART TWO - 3:47 mark Paul shares a recent eye-opening musical experience. PART THREE - 8:47 mark Scott calls up Buddy Cannon to learn about how he went from growing up in a family so poor they didn't have a car to becoming a legendary Nashville songwriter and record producer; how he started writing songs out of boredom, the circumstances of getting his first four cuts in two days (all by the CMA's Entertainer of the Year); how his first charting single became a #1 hit; the experience of writing his first song after getting sober; why he had to tell Kenny Chesney he couldn't produce his early albums; the real-life conversation that became his biggest hit; the time he freaked out when his musical hero called him on the phone; and how he and Willie Nelson only co-write via text message. ABOUT BUDDY CANNON Though widely recognized as a respected Nashville record producer, Buddy Cannon initially made his mark in the music business as a songwriter. His first charting single came with Mel Tillis’ recording of “I Believe in You,” which reached #1 on the Billboard country rankings in 1978. He went on to write several Vern Gosdin hits, including the #1 singles “Set ‘Em Up Joe” and “I’m Still Crazy.” George Straight took his “I’ve Come to Expect it from You” to #1, but his greatest success with Straight came in 2006 when “Give It Away” hit the top spot on the charts and went on to be named Song of the Year by both the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music. Additionally, Buddy’s songs have been recorded by Hank Snow, Loretta Lynn, David Allan Coe, Billy Ray Cyrus, George Jones, Gene Watson, Alabama, Bill Anderson, Don Williams, Tracy Byrd, and others. As a producer he’s worked on projects for Sammy Kershaw, Sara Evans, Chely Wright, Craig Morgan, John Michael Montgomery, Reba McEntire, Joe Diffie, Joe Nichols, Jamey Johnson, Randy Travis, Lionel Richie, Eric Clapton, Rhonda Vincent, Dolly Parton, and Merle Haggard. A multiple Grammy winner, Cannon has also won a CMA and three ACM awards for his production work, including the ACM’s Producer of the Year honor in 2005.

Nicolle is the unicorn of the music business, she has it all. Yes her life appears perfect, but she’s not scared to fail, or talk about her insecurities, struggles and the ups and downs of daily life. I love how she views fear and failure, and why she’s not afraid to own her worth. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://news.iheart.com/podcast-advertisers
