Bacteriophages (“phages”), or bacterial viruses, are the most abundant biological entity on the planet, and the microbial world is shaped by these predators and parasites. The ability of bacteriophages to specifically target and kill their prey is being explored as an alternate therapy to antibiotics against various bacterial diseases. Dr. Graham Hatfull is a professor at the University of Pittsburgh who studies Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative agent of tuberculosis, and the phages that infect it. Hatfull directs the Science Education Alliance-Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science (SEA-PHAGES) program along with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Hatfull talks about how the SEA-PHAGES program has allowed entering students at more than 100 colleges and universities around the country to discover thousands of new phages, how phages isolated from the program were used to save the life of a patient infected with Mycobacterium, what the prospects are for phage therapy being used as treatment for other diseases, how bacterial resistance to phage infection impacts phage therapy, and how important research experience can be for students. microTalk was joined by Dr. Jimmy Ballard when this podcast was recorded at the ASM Microbe 2019 conference in San Francisco, CA. The microCase for listeners to solve is about Buck Shott, an aging Western movie stunt double who comes down with a potentially fatal infection after filming an action scene for “The Old, the Ancient, and the Geriatric”. Participants: Karl Klose, Ph.D. (UTSA) Graham Hatfull, Ph.D. (University of Pittsburgh) Jimmy Ballard, Ph.D. (University of Oklahoma) Janakiram Seshu, Ph.D. (UTSA) Mylea Echazarreta (UTSA)
Dr. Jimmy Ballard is professor and chairman of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. Dr. Ballard is an expert on Clostridia-related diseases, and specifically disease caused by C. difficile, or “Cdiff.” Cdiff infections result from heavy antibiotic usage, and can cause serious and even fatal disease. One of the most successful treatments for Cdiff infection is a fecal transplant, where fecal bacteria from a healthy donor are transplanted into the patient. Dr. Desh Sharma is a gastroenterologist who performs fecal transplants on his patients with Cdiff infections. Dr. Ballard discusses how Cdiff causes disease, Dr. Sharma discusses exactly how a fecal transplant is performed. The MicroCase for listeners to solve is about Guera Macarena, a zookeeper who comes down with a strange disease after holding races with some of her zoo animals. During Mike's Course - Billy's best friend from his younger years shares a story that happened while on his way to Mexico with a group of golfers!Kelvin Miyahira I started teaching golf over 26 years ago when video was not available for the average consumer. But then in 1985, when the first consumer VHS camcorder became available, I bought it. It was great to be able to view a golf swing for the first time with such clarity. Though shutter speeds were not quite fast enough to get a great stop action, it was the best that any consumer could buy. And I got some great videos of old stars like Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Payne Stewart, Fred Couples and more when they would visit the Hawaiian Open. Being in Hawaii, I always thought it would be so great if I could actually see the best teachers of my era. Luckily, I got to see Bob Toski, then took lessons from Jimmy Ballard and I was hooked on learning from the best. I knew that I would really be better at my craft if I learned from others vs. trying to learn it all myself. But these guys were simply not as technical nor precise with their teaching as I thought they should be so I kept my eye out for someone better. By the late 1980’s, Nick Faldo had begun to win. Denis Watson and Nick Price were also very good players. I thought, “wouldn’t it be great to learn from David Leadbetter?” So in 1990 I called their office and soon I was booked for his weekend retreat at Lake Nona. Spending two eight-hour days hitting golf balls, chipping and putting was a dream come true. I certainly learned a lot but after awhile I knew I just didn’t get it all. I didn’t get all the “secrets.” Kelvin Miyahira has worked with several collegiate strength coaches and athletes at the University of Hawaii, University of Louisville, University of Nebraska, HPU, and Mt. San Antonio College. He has trained 100's of athletes, including Olympic hopefuls, from as young as 6 years old to adults in all sports from baseball, golf, soccer, tennis, volleyball, track, etc. Kelvin has products being used by the David Leadbetter Junior Golf Academy in Florida as well as many other golf academies across the US. and in Mexico/South America. Frank Moore P.G.A has over 20 years of experience in golf instruction with an interesting teaching and playing background. Learning from many of today's golfing legends, Frank brings a unique blend of experience and perspective to the lesson tee. My first exposure to golf was in the early 70’s. I had a few lessons from the local pros. The first lesson, really sparked my interest in the golf swing. I improved quite a bit, and broke 80 that same year. Next, I took a few lessons from a pro that favored the Square to Square Method. I had a tough time with this, but I figured out a way to make it work. I went on to play college golf. I did fairly well, and made the All-Conference team one year. We had a good team, and won both the State Small College Tournament, and the District Tournament during my college years. I have now been in the golf business for over 20 years. I started as an assistant pro in Virginia. There I gave my first official golf lessons. The pro I was working for was interested in teaching, and seemed to like the Golf Digest instructors… Flick, Toski, etc.. I did the best I could to help the people, with what I knew. Later, I worked for a pro in North Carolina that favored Jimmy Ballard’s teaching methods. I learned a little about this type of teaching, and did use some of the ideas with my students. Next, I worked for a former tour player in Indiana. Here, we taught strictly according to the Jim Flick type format. We gave many, many group lessons, and did junior golf camps. The next several years I was back in North Carolina working as an assistant pro. I became a PGA Member during this time. I continued teaching, doing the best I could with the knowledge I had. I took a few lessons from an up and comming pro named David Leadbetter during this time. During these years I met a pro that was winning many local pro tournaments in the area. He actually played in the P.G.A. Championship, and made the cut. I found out he adhered to a method that had something to do with a machine concept. We met a few times. He gave me a few pointers, but later referred me to a teacher in South Carolina. I attended my first Golfing Machine School in 1988. The GSED was Tom Tomasello. I saw here a clear way to teach and learn the physics and geometry of a golf stroke. My teaching, and playing started to improve, as a result of my new knowledge. A year or so later, I attended the Advanced School that Tom offered. In attendance was Clarence Moore, 2 time U.S. Senior Amateur Champion. He gave a demonstration of his pattern. He was very impressive. He could Hit, or Swing equally well, at least it appeared that way to me. I picked up more useful information at this school, especially relating to the short game. I continued to work with Tom up to his death. I also worked some with Alex Sloan, GSED I gained more insight from Alex, although his methods were quite different from Tom’s. Later, I taught for 3 years with GSED George Kelnhofer. There, I was exposed to many tour caliber players, and good amateur players. David Duval, Larry Mize, Charley Rymer, Stuart Cink, Craig Perks, and Charles Howell were the many players that came through there. During the next several years I taught in Atlanta. During this time I knew, and worked periodically with Tom Ness, GSEM I learned a great deal from Tom, especially about the short game. I also knew, and worked some with Chuck Evans, GSED. I developed back problems later in my career. During this time I contacted David Lee, because I heard he had a method of swinging that was back friendly. I found that David had quite a knowledge of physics, as it pertains to golf. I taught briefly in his indoor facility, Gravity Golf, in Atlanta. A year or so later I met Lynn Blake, GSEM. Lynn has a unique level of understanding of The Golfing Machine, due to his personal involvement with the author, Homer Kelley. Through my involvement with Lynn, along with Ted Fort and Steve Ferguson, I gained an even greater insight into The Golfing Machine. I am currently the Director of Instruction at The Frank Moore Golf Academy at Dunes West Golf and River Club, in Mount Pleasant, SC. Jimmy Ballard, Pioneer of Connection. No instructor in the game of golf has ever resurrected more champion golf swings than Jimmy Ballard. Residing a the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, Florida, the founding "Pioneer of Connection in the golf swing, Jimmy Ballard continues as one of the top golf instructors in the world. In 1988 alone, Ballard's "connection" method stimulated victories in four major international tournaments with the U.S. Open Winner Curtis Strange, (who would add another Open title in '89); Masters Champion Sandy Lyle; British Open victor Seve Ballesteros, and British Amateur champion, Sweden's Christian Harden. A teachers' "Grand Slam" if there ever was one. From top money winners, to PGA / LPGA / SR.PGA champions and record breaking accuracy merits, Ballard has been praised for their successes. Named by Golf Magazine, the '80's "Teacher of the Decade", Ballard began setting his sights to the future. In '86, he was invited to join the telecast of the British Open at Turnberry for ESPN, returning to television after regular appearances from his highly popular home video instructional series, "The Jimmy Ballard Golf Connection". A demand for further directional videotapes was met with the '89 release of "The Fundamental Golf Swing."During these early years, Ballard created a dictionary of golf terminology sufficient in it's scope to assist the beginner as well as the professional. His famous "Seven Common Denominators" and "Misleading Terms" swept golf magazine headlines nationwide, reaching international recognition by the late 1970's. His 1981 book, "How To Perfect Your Golf Swing," outlined the golf swing in sequential detail, specifying inaccuracies in teaching golf over the years due to his discovery of a "deceptive feel" as opposed to actuality, and clarifying the "identifiable essential movements present in great ball strikers "…. Stressing that "great ball strikers" have not been singular to one sport or activity. Arthur Ashe used them in tennis, Joe DiMaggio perfected them in baseball, and Ben Hogan mastered them in golf and Jimmy named it "Connection"Ballard, in spreading his gospel, has spoken to most of the PGA Sections around the country. In December of 1996, he was selected as one of the top 4 teachers in the world, to make his presentation to the contingent of PGA members gathered from the United States as well as 23 other countries. He is credited with making the 1996 Tommy Armour PGA Teaching & Coaching Summit a major success.Swedish superstar Jesper Parnevik, has had continued success after first coming to Ballard with Sweden's national Golf Team in the mid 80's. He credits Jimmy with "teaching him all there is to know!"The 1997 Junior Champion was Jason Allred, who started working with Jimmy at 15. European Ryder Cup captain, Tony Jacklin improved after seeing Ballard. In late 2004, Rocco Mediate came to give it one last chance. His back could not go on without making changes. "The guy is brilliant, just genius."In March 2008 Rocco brought US Ryder Cup Captain Paul Azinger to see Jimmy. The list goes on… www.jimmyballardgolf.comAvila Beach Golf Resort - www.avilabeachresort.com Blacklake Golf Resort - www.blacklake.comInn at Avila Beach - www.avilabeachca.comAvila LaFonda Hotel - www.avilalafondahotel.comGolfland Warehouse - www.golflandwarehouse.comSlickstix - www.slickstix.comFor more information on Golf Talk Radio with Mike & Billy visit www.golftalkradio.com and visit www.centralcoasttoday.com for Golf Talk TV with Mike & Billy.
