In Part 1 of Episode 32 I'm joined by Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Famer & 1997 Assistant Ryder Cup Captain Dennis Satyshur and renowned Sports Psychologist Dr. Bob Winters. Dennis Satyshur is from Erie, Pennsylvania. He won the high school state golf championship in 1968. He went to Duke on a football scholarship and captained the football team plus lettered 3 years on the golf team. He began his career in golf working at Pinehurst. He later moved to Columbia Country Club where he worked for Bill Strausbaugh for 3 years. Several years later he won the Bill Strausbaugh Award for his commitment to mentoring others. Later on he became the first Director of Golf at Caves Valley Golf Club, one of the premier courses in the country. Dennis shares stories from his time at Duke, the day he met Tom Kite, Jim Simons, and Andy North when they were all college players, how he stalked Kite to learn from him, and their friendship which led to Kite asking him to be an Assistant Captain on the 1997 Ryder Cup team. You'll also hear about his years at Caves Valley, playing alongside members like Augusta National Chairman Fred Ridley, and the culture he created there. Dr. Bob Winters makes his monthly visit to the show this week. Doc addresses what to do if we have a blow-up hole like Nelly Korda did at the Women's US Open. He also gives insights into what sets his Asian players apart from his American players.

In this week episode I interview my good friend legendary golf instructor Jim McLean, who is one of the most prolific golf instructors of the last 30 years. He is known for coining the phrase “X-Factor”, observing that the greater the differential between the hips and shoulders at the top of the swing, the more power the golfer can create. He pioneered the use of video for golf instruction and was one of the first adopters of radar technology used in swing analysis tools like TrackMan. He is also authored and sold over 15 different books and videos, and taught some of the greatest golfers of our generation. Including, Sergio Garcia, Curtis Strange, Gary Player, Bernard Langer, Al Geiberger, US Open champions Liselotte Neumann, Jane Geddes, Lauri Merten, Ben Crenshaw, Tom Kite, Webb Simpson, and Hal Sutton to just name a few. Hello again fellow Golfists,I was happy to be able to see some golf from Pebble Beach on Groundhog Day weekend 2023.  The PGA Tour decided to do away with amateur play on Sunday at Pebble and stick with what sells; professionals playing golf.  I was delighted to see this change of format because it allowed at least the pros to play the front nine on Sunday after the tournament was halted Saturday because of high winds at Monterey Peninsula Golf Club.  Tom Kite won the US Open at Pebble Beach in gale force winds and nobody halted any play that day in June 1992.  Once the play was over on CBS I got to see the continuing coverage on Peacock that also allowed me to see a gorgeous sunset from the Pebble Beach Golf Links.  Play was then suspended due to darkness to resume tomorrow at 8am pacific time.  I also enjoyed watching golf on this day with very little commercial interruption as well.  I hope that Justin Rose can hold on to win tomorrow at Pebble Beach. Thanks again for listening and visit The Knackered Golfist on YouTube to see my most recent music video.  Special shout out to Yooto'pea Golf for their wonderful Timeless Gatsby hat that I recieved recently.  #theknackeredgolfistpodcast #theknackeredgolfist#acushnetbullseyewideblade#yootopeagolf#thundervalleygolfresortatwhitneyoaks

Sometimes we manage to accomplish them, sometimes we struggle a bit, but every time we fail, no exception, we look for someone to blame for our failure. We blame our phone because it won't stop going off, or some noise outside, perhaps some breaking news that got our attention - it can be anything. The truth is we should blame ourselves; we trick ourselves into looking for distractions, and a good distraction is something no one can resist. In this episode, we will talk about the distractions we find and keep us far from achieving our goals, our vision. When we commit to a task that'll help us get where we want to be, we are focused, we think with clarity, and we know that is the best choice for us. The hard part is maintaining that level of focus and commitment; after some time, we don't think as clear as the moment we decided to follow that action plan. In the middle of the way, we start distracting ourselves to look somewhere else, like magicians do in their acts of distraction. In This Episode, You Will Learn:Goals and commitment is a matter of perspective (4:49)Who is to blame for our distractions? This episode's guest, Dennis Satyshur, is a legendary club professional and the director of golf at Caves Valley golf club outside of Baltimore, Maryland. Dennis was born and raised in Erie, Pennsylvania, where he learned the game of golf through caddying for his dad at an early age. Eventually he won the Pennsylvania high school state title before heading to Duke University as a dual athlete playing on the varsity golf team and as the quarterback of the football team. For those of you who know Dennis, his nickname “Football” comes to mind. He came to know one of his now longest friends, Tom Kite, during a short stint as a playing professional after college. Dennis then went on to serve under some renowned head professionals around the country at clubs such as Pinehurst, Pine Tree, and Baltimore Country Club, but the most impactful mentor he encountered was Bill Strausbaugh at Columbia Country Club. Dennis became the head pro and director of golf at Caves Valley in 1991 when it opened - during his 30 year tenure there, he's developed 25 assistant professionals on his staff to become head professionals at other clubs, served as an assistant captain on the 1997 Ryder Cup team, and has overseen many prestigious events at Caves Valley including next year's FedEx Cup playoff event the BMW Championship. Dennis' attention to detail has cultivated a culture of excellent service and experience that has helped create the brand of Caves Valley - we talk about his upbringing, fostering that culture as a team player, and how he's approaching his final year at Caves Valley before retiring after the BMW Championship next season.

This Friday episode features our SGS Spotlight for the week and the subject is Ben Crenshaw. As usual for these Spotlights, it’s long, but take it in at your own plumb-bob pace. We get into Crenshaw’s outrageous amateur career, including his three consecutive NCAA titles, intra-UT rivalry with Tom Kite, and the “Ben’s Wrens” that followed him. We go long on some of these NCAA moments and early pro days that had writers calling him the next Jack Nicklaus with Arnold Palmer’s charisma. His repeated majors close calls that followed are put in context before his major breakthrough at the 1984 Masters. His struggles in the 80s, both with his swing thoughts and health, are considered against the monumental hype that followed him from his earliest days as a pro. The emotional 1995 Masters win and the stirring 1999 Ryder Cup are given the treatment. We consider his contributions as an architect, one of the game’s greatest putters, and one of its great historians, when discussing his legacy at the end of the episode.

Today’s guest is world renown golf sports psychologist and author of the best selling book, Golf is Not A Game of Perfect, Dr. Bob Rotella. Rotella’s clients have included Tom Kite, Jack Nicklaus and 100s of other golf, NBA, MLB and NFL - in particular kickers, punters and snappers. The parallels between the psychology of great golf and kicking have always been uncanny, and it was a truly humbling experience to discuss this with one of my early heroes. Dr’s book saved my college football career as a kicker - as a nervous young specialist who couldn’t get out of his own ways struggled to believe in himself and stuck inside his own head, Rotella’s work not only helped me, but 1,000s of other athletes from all walks of lives get out of their own way and believe in themselves. Ray Billows was one of golf’s greatest players of his generation. But, instead of trying to make a living as a professional, Billows decided to remain an amateur and compete as such. Of course, this was at a time when amateur golf was considered a bigger game than professional golf and when the U.S. Amateur was much larger in stature than it is today. In fact, over the years some of the game’s most legendary names have won the U.S. Amateur, guys like Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. Guys on the losing side of the final match are also quite historic: Ben Crenshaw, Tom Kite and John Cook. Making it to the finals of the U.S. Amateur is an accomplishment in itself. After days of surviving 36-hole stroke-play rounds and 36-holes of match play rounds, the last two men standing tee it up for a final day of 36-holes of match play. Ray Billows, who won 74% of all the U.S. Amateur match-play events he played, made it to the finals three times. Unfortunately, however, Billows never came out on top and is the only man in history to lose the U.S. Amateur three times. How good was Billows? Byron Nelson said Ray Billows was best the long-iron player in the world. Bobby Jones said Ray executed certain shots better than anyone in the world. He played on two Walker Cup teams. Billows, who played in the Masters a few times, recorded a hole-in-one on No. 16. In fact, Billows was so well thought of, and so respected, that the USGA Museum in Far Hills, NJ created an exhibition honoring Billows. But never winning the U.S. Amateur was the biggest disappointment in Ray’s career. Tom Buggy, who played golf with Ray in the early 1970s, wrote a book about Ray, “Ray Billows, The Cinderella Kid,” and joins Sports’ Forgotten Heroes for a wonderful conversation about a golfer who dominated the amateur ranks everywhere he went, but could never win the game’s biggest event. It's the season opening event for the PGA TOUR Champions with official event champions of the 2016 and 2017 seasons, winners of the majors from recent years and professionals by invitation with a minimum of five or more career victories, including one major. Played on the beautiful Hualalai Golf Course, designed by Jack Nicklaus at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka’upulehu, the Pro-Am is on Tuesday January 16 and Wednesday January 17 Thursday, Friday, and Saturday January 18-19-20 is the 54 hole stroke play event broadcast on NBC Golf Channel. It's a 1.8 million purse. Bernhard Langer defends. Advance tickets are available at pgatour.com/mec $20 One Day Pass / $40 Tournament Pass (purchase on website) or at the Gate tournament week for $25 Tournament Day and $ 45 Tournament Week Pass . I think one of the best aspects of this Mitsubishi Electric Championship is monies raised for our local charities. The Rotary Club of Kona organizes the 300+ volunteers with Kris Hazard and Larry Webb continuing as volunteer co-chairs and in return the tournament donates to the Rotary Club of Kona Community Foundation. Big Island Junior Golf and the Daniel R Sayre Foundation are also recipients. 2018 Eligible Player Field: Michael Allen, Stephen Ames, Woody Austin, Paul Broadhurst, Fred Couples, John Daly, Marco Dawson, Joe Durant, Carlos Franco, David Frost, Doug Garwood, Paul Goydos, Jay Haas, Kohki Idoki, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Brandt Jobe, Jerry Kelly, Bernhard Langer, Tom Lehman, Jeff Maggert, Scott McCarron, Rocco Mediate, Colin Montgomerie, Jesper Parnevik, Tom Pernice,Jr., Kenny Perry, Gene Sauers, Vijay Singh, Esteban Toledo, Kirk Triplett, Duffy Waldorf, Mark Wiebe Sponsor Exemptions: Olin Browne, Mark Calcavecchia, Fred Funk, Peter Jacobsen, Corey Pavin, Loren Roberts, Jeff Sluman, David Toms Hall of Fame Eligible: Hale Irwin, Tom Kite, Sandy Lyle, Larry Nelson, Mark O’Meara, Jose Maria Olazabal, Tom Watson, Ian Woosnam I think it is significant that Greg McLaughlin was involved with many of the current PGA TOUR Champions players as they were coming up and making strides on the PGA TOUR. Before he joined the PGA TOUR as Senior VP of PGA TOUR Championship Management, Greg was Tournament Director of the PGA Northern Trust Open (formerly Nissan Open), Honda classic, BMW Championship and Director of the Tiger Woods Foundation for 14 years. At the Nissan Open in 1992 at Rivera Country Club in LA Greg was responsible for providing Tiger Woods with his first exemption to compete in a PGA TOUR. Fred Couples won the Nissan Open that year. I was at that 1992 Nissan Open and it was the first time I met Greg McLaughlin and it was the first time I ever saw Tiger Woods. He was around 16 years old. I was just venturing to other venues to cover golf and I'll always remember how helpful and friendly Greg was to me when I got press credentials for the Nissan Open over several years. I appreciate having worked with and been very involved with the PGA TOUR Champions and Kelly Fliear, Tournament Manager for 22 years now. It's been fun to weave so many relationships in the world of golf in my hometown Detroit and Hawaii into my life. For instance Brian Goin. Brian had been Tournament Director of the Ford Seniors in Detroit for many years and then as Director of PGA Tour Championship Management we worked together on the Mitsubishic Electric Championship at Hualalai. We have mutual friends in the Detroit Media and handful of my friends from Detroiters have for years played in the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai Pro-AM and we have a few spots open for this year. Greg and I mention Warwick Hills in Grand Blanc, Michigan being the site in September 2018 for the PGA TOUR Champions Ally Challenge. Warwick Hills hosted the Buick Open for 45 years through 2009. As a junior golfer aspiring to play professional golf in the 1960's, attending the Buick Open was very special. So grateful for the game of golf and the relationships in my life through golf professionally and personally. Kelly Fliear, Tournament Manager and I have worked together on this tournament for 20 years. We share some stories about what a wonderful week it is in so many ways. It's a PGA TOUR Champions tournament with official event champions of the 2015 and 2016 seasons, winners of the majors since 2012 and ten professionals by invitation with a minimum of five or more career victories, including one major. It's a wonderful event for spectators on the beautiful Hualalai Golf Course, designed by Jack Nicklaus at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka’upulehu. The PGA Champions Tour players who have qualified for this years tournament are: Michael Allen, Billy Andrade, Woody Austin, Paul Broadhurst, Olin Browne, Mark Calcavecchia, Roger Chapman, Fred Couples, Joe Daley, Marco Dawson, Joe Durant, Carlos Franco, David Frost, Doug Garwood, Paul Goydos, Jay Haas, Kohki Idoki, Lee Janzen, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Bernhard Langer, Tom Lehman, Jeff Maggert, Scott McCarron, Rocco Mediate, Colin Montgomerie, Jesper Parnevik, Kenny Perry, Gene Sauers, Jerry Smith, Esteban Toledo, Kirk Triplett, Duffy Waldorf, Mark Wiebe, Ian Woosnam. The 10 sponsor exemptions include John Daly, Fred Funk, Hale Irwin, Tom Kite, Davis Love III, Sandy Lyle, Larry Nelson, Mark O’Meara, Tom Pernice Jr., Loren Roberts, Vijay Singh, Jeff Sluman, Jerry Smith, David Toms, Tom Watson Kelly Fliear, Tournament Manager and Brian Goin, head of PGA Tour Championship Management, Dave Senko, Senior Manager Communications at the PGA Tour, Pete Rolfing, PCR Sports< M and so many others who return each year. While we get an opportunity to see up close, Champions Tour players and be inspired by their golf, I think one of the best aspects of this event for the last 20 years is the funds that have been raised for local charities. The Rotary Club of Kona organizes the volunteers with Kris Hazard and Larry Webb continuing as volunteer co-chairs and in return the tournament donates to the Rotary Club of Kona Community Foundation. Big Island Junior Golf is one of the charities as well. I always look forward to Saturday when the keiki from the Big Island Junior Golf in Hilo sponsored by Mitsubishi come to the tournament after they play their own tournament at Mauna Lani Resort. They are knowledgeable golf fans and so enthused when getting autographs. While players are good with the fans, they are especially attentive to the juniors. In the past Tom Watson and Hale Irwin each year have a special interaction with the keiki joking and interacting with them as they signs autographs. I have friends who were junior golfers when this event started 20 years ago on the Big Island and no question being around this quality golf inspired my friends to practice, get on their high school team, earn college scholarships and a handful are now professional golfers. The Daniel R Sayre Foundation is another one of the charities. The Foundation was created by Dr. Frank and Laura Sayre in memory of their son Daniel who lost his life in a hiking accident 20 years ago in Pololu Valley. Recognizing the need for rescue equipment, the Daniel R Sayre Foundation with tremendous community support has raised well over a million dollars in monies and equipment for our Hawaii County Fire Department and Rescue Teams. David Marr III, Mark Rolfing, and Jay Radzavicz all with NBC Golf Channel return each year to be part of the broadcasts and reports from the Mitsubishi Electric Championship and lend their support for an event at Nanea with some of the Champions Tour players raising funds for the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association. The PGA Tour, Brendan Moynahan, Director of Golf Hualalai Golf Club and his staff, Kahu Billy Mitchell, “Uncle” Earl Regidor Manager, Ka’upulehu Cultural Center, the Four Seasons Resort staff and the volunteers have year after year created a world class event with players that just might inspire you to work on your golf game a little more or volunteer next year.

Affectionately known as the "Little Pro," Eddie Merrins has long been revered as a golf guru. For nearly 40 years Eddie has lived and breathed the game and the way of life of golf as Head Professional at the Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles. At the Bel-Air Country Club the locker nameplates read like an Oscar party guest list; Tom Cruise, Dennis Quaid, James Woods, Richard Crenna, Jack Wagner and James Garner, are just a few.The Little Pro has instructed some of the biggest names in entertainment, as well as some of the highest-level professional golfers. Merrins has amassed almost 60 years of knowledge, from his years as a junior, amateur and college golfer to his career as a professional tour player, instructor, head professional and NCAA coach.Teaching means more to me than any tournament because I've helped that person to help himself or herself," Merrins said. "Playing is for personal satisfaction, but teaching is a labor of love."While beginning his teaching career, Merrins also had the insight that would lead him to develop his "swing the handle" philosophy that became his most lasting contribution to golf instruction.Asked to explain how exactly "swing the handle" works, Merrins told a story about the 1978 British Open at St. Andrews. He was on the practice tee with Tom Kite, and Jack Nicklaus approached. They exchanged pleasantries and then Jack got right to the point. He looked at me and said, 'You believe in swing the handle, don't you? Explain it to me,'" Merrins remembered. "Out of the blue, a mental image came to me. I said, 'Jack, you're a tennis player.
