Few people in any industry can claim to have altered the direction of that industry, but David Leadbetter is one. When a playing career eluded him in the 1980s, he turned his mind and energies to coaching and from humble beginnings, has built one of the most recognisable golf instruction "brands" in the world. But along the way, Leadbetter's profile - and that of his successful clients - helped reshape the way golfers think about taking lessons, a change remaining in effect to this day. John Huggan sits down with Leadbetter to talk everything from his transformation of Nick Faldo's swing, to the one player he never got to work with but wanted to.
The numbers are impressive, and they tell much of the amazing story of David Leadbetter. He has coached elite players such as Nick Faldo, Nick Price, Greg Norman, and Ernie Els to more than 20 major championship titles and more than 100 individual worldwide tournament victories. Yet, the full tale of Leadbetter lies in his passion for getting to know his players and helping them maximize their abilities. What an instructor and what an interview!

How ‘Socratic' questioning could help transform your game Today we have on the show internationally renowned coach Nick Bradley who has written a fantastic new book called ‘The 50 secrets to GREAT GOLF you don't know about YET!' Download Mind Caddie for hundreds of short audio lessons and exercises produced by Karl and start improving your mental game the same way as six major champions: https://mindcaddie.onelink.me/7xjx/znldwgbi One of the secrets really stood out to me Socratic questioning and how being prepared to ‘go into' the problem you have with your game could actually help find a solution What would you ‘need' to do to slice the ball? Can you actually experience what you would need to do to deliberately create the ‘mistake'? This area of enquiry was just one of the fascinating topics that we managed to cover in a really wide ranging conversation: Why trying to get rid of the ‘ego' is the ultimate ego trip Playing to your strengths as a coach The uses and misuses of technology Becoming more of a SHOT coach Giving our shots a ‘name' The problem with ‘Method Coaching' and why this is perhaps the least effective coaching model The dangers of relying on our memory Nick has had a very long and distinguished coaching career, studying with some of the world's best coaches like David Leadbetter and then going on to coach top players such as Justin Rose He is a deep thinker about the game and is refreshingly honest and forthright in his opinions of what we need to do to get the best from our game To find out more about Nick go to https://www.bradleygolf.com/ Get a copy of his latest book ‘The 50 Secrets to Great Golf you don't know about YET' Are you going to take ACTION and become a Certified Mind Factor coach? We got him! David Leadbetter is a tough man to pin down, but alas, Hally and James caught up with the man they call “dad.” David has a new book called “Fix it Yourself” which, if you are one to get most of your instruction from random people on the internet, this book could be your new range buddy. (Note that David is careful to point out that there are a lot of good tips on the world wide web, but one must not apply everything that comes across their feed.) Anyways, lots of laughs with dad, a recap of the U.S. Women's Open and Hally went on an art retreat that she won't shut up about. Enjoy!
"It was a simulator venue that had six bays with lessons and it was going out of business. In the building I worked in there was a space for lease on the ground level. We ended up buying the business and moved it there for five years. An Indoor Golf Centre with 10 bays, an indoor bunker, massive putting green, a bar and a cafe. It did okay but the rent we were paying was huge so in the end we have to get out of there." "Shortly after that I had an idea to pivot. 24-hour gyms were really booming in Australia at the time. Why don't we have a 24-hour golf simulator place where you can go and practice anytime? We built two bays and it did well. Then I opened a second venue and that one nosedived and just blew up. I closed it down, lost a lot of money with the four simulators that I had there. I put them on Facebook Marketplace and they sold in a week. I'm like "hmm, this is interesting." So I bought five more simulators to sell. Why am I busting my chops with these venues when I can just bring them in, sell them, make my money and never hear from the customer again? It was great. I pivoted the business. Ended up closing down my second venue and just went completely e-commerce." ... Igor Vainshtein https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/1/1ea879c1-a4a2-4e10-bea4-e5d8368a3c7a/DIjA69TO.jpg (https://www.youtube.com/@modgolfpodcast/videos) "At the time it is horrendous. It feels horrible to lose a ton of money. I lost my money, I lost my parents money, which I borrowed from them and they had to bail me out again. It was embarrassing and as you are going through that pain, it's very difficult to see how you will come out of it. But if you're a true entrepreneur, perseverance and grit, you may not know how you're going to get there. But you've got to believe that you will get there. That's part of the job as an entrepreneur to find the "how". But if you don't believe that you'll get the you will never get there." Moments where I thought there's no way I'm coming back from this. But if I look back now, I wouldn't change a thing because all those little "sliding doors moments" is why I'm here today. And I didn't go through the pain, maybe I wouldn't be able to appreciate the things and I would take things for granted and I wouldn't have the fun and the joy that I get out of life these days. For anyone who's experiencing that who's in that pain right now, I would say "You just don't know". There's a phrase "that it's gonna be alright in the end and if it's not alright, it's not the end." Calling all golf entrepreneurs! Do you have a golf venture our product that you need help getting to the next level? Even if you're at the idea stage, our guest Carolin Pinegger is looking for you to join them for the next Golf Pitch Challenge and Mastermind event (https://golfpitchchallenge.com) May 22 and 23 in Orlando Florida. On this fast-paced, engaging episode we learn about Carolin's not-so-straight-line in golf and business to arrive at the place she is along her entrepreneurial journey. "I wanted to pivot, to change and people that are too planned will have a hard time succeeding because you have to fail fast and you have fail forward and you have to pivot and you have to change and sometimes you even have to change before we really see the reason why you have to change. I felt like I was treading water and it most certainly wasn't because I was working hard enough. I was doing my very best and I wasn't getting where I wanted to be. And then I said "I need a change!" ... I have collaborated on projects and ventures with STI for over 10 years through my Sport Entertainment company, so I have seen first hand how innovative, passionate, and creative they are. If you are considering an artificial landscaped grass lawn, a putting green, golf tee lines and hitting mats, a synthetic sports field, playground turf or a dog park, then I highly recommend STI for your next project. And all of STI's grass products are crafted completely in-house and proudly made in America. "My dad was a serial offender in entrepreneurship. He has the right amount of crazy in him. Every entrepreneur needs that. To be misunderstood much more than anybody else who isn't an entrepreneur can tolerate. That's something that a lot of entrepreneurs need to hear. If you want to make it big, if you want to be an entrepreneur, you have to be ready to be criticized. You have to be ready to be misunderstood much much more than the general public because they don't want to put themselves in that situation. That's why they will never be entrepreneurs. It's just not up their alley and that is fine. There are different requirements for entrepreneurs than for somebody who isn't." Was macht den All-Season Ultra so besonders? Ich freu mich einfach sehr drauf sie bald zum Einsatz zu bringen. https://www.siegergolf.com/offers/BaAEYBog/checkoutRobin and David talk golf with analysis and discussion on what makes the 'greats' stand out from the others. What we can learn from them, whilst dispelling a few myths along the way. David began his career in golf on the European and South African Tours. He soon realized his interest was in the technique, mechanics, and intricacies of the game, which eventually led him to spend more time teaching than playing. Soon after David's retirement from playing, he began to incorporate his methods and philosophies into a stringent, holistic training program for qualified instructors that remains unmatched even today. David has coached players to over 25 Major Championship titles and over 150 individual worldwide tournament victories. Four of those players have even held first place in the Official World Golf Ranking. With a desire to bring that same world-class instruction to players of all ages and abilities, and in addition to the numerous articles written for publications like Golf Digest and Golf International over the past three decades, David has authored seven books on the topic.
