Tom Patri is back with me this week along with 3 Next on the Tee rookies, 1984 National Champion John Inman, 1986 Florida State Amateur Champion Barry Cheesman, and Robert Morris University Head Men's Golf Coach Steve Shingledecker. TP and I got into this past weekend's Wasted Management Open and if it has gone from being The People's Open to needing The People's Court? We also talk about the rash of 60 and sub-60 rounds we've seen recently, plus the resurrection of the Maxfli golf ball. John Inman won the 1984 National Championship while at the University of North Carolina. We hear about that victory, what it was like teaming with Davis Love III and Jack Nicklaus II to win the 1983/84 ACC Championship, getting the better of Rocco Mediate twice at the '84 Western Amateur and the Provident Classic, plus whether his brother Joe, a 4-time winner between the PGA & Champions Tours, would make a great next Commissioner of the PGA Tour. Barry Cheesman started out as a Minor League baseball player in the Cardinals farm system back in the 70s. He later turned his attention to golf and won the 1986 Florida State Amateur Championship. We hear that story plus about his 2 wins on the Ben Hogan Tour including at Quail Hollow outside of Cleveland. We also hear what it took to be a long driver out on Tour in the days of persimmon woods and balata golf balls. Steve Shingledecker is a great multi-sport athlete. He was an All-American baseball player at North Carolina State. He coached Franklin High School in the Pittsburgh area to the 2006 AAA PIAA basketball state championship, and he's now the Head Men's Golf Coach at Robert Morris. We started out talking about his high school friendship/rivalry with Top 100 Instructor and fellow Pittsburgh area native Eric Johnson during their Oil Creek Region days. Someone used the phrase "garbage athlete" to describe the other. While the other one used air quotes around "athlete" when describing his friend. We moved on to learn about his college baseball days at NC State where he was the ACC Tournament MVP in 1990. We got into his golf career and learned what it was like being in the mix at the 2002 Pennsylvania State Mid Amateur Championship. We went on the court to hear what it was like coaching Franklin High to that state championship. We rounded out our conversation getting into how he went about getting the Head Golf Coach position at Robert Morris and working with his players to build that golf program.

Utley, once known as a short game and putting guru, is now best known for repairing the Round Mound of Rebound's hitch, which has gained him all sorts of cred in the teaching pro streets. He's also worked with the likes of Jay Haas, Rocco Mediate, and Sergio Garcia, who Utley believes is a far better putter than he's been given credit for in his career. 6x PGA Tour winner Rocco Mediate joins us on this episode of Chasin' Birdies. At 59 years young, there's still plenty of gas left in his tank. We talk about his start on tour in 1986, the 2008 US Open, and what he's doing now on the Champions Tour. This episode will keep you listening and wanting more!Although there were bigger moment's in Rocco's career (like beating Tiger Woods or winning 6x on tour), arguably the most notable weekend of his career happened during the 2008 US Open. Against who? Yep, Tiger Woods. We sit down with Rocco and talk golf in this episode of Chasin' Birdies. The episode opens up with Rocco, while smoking a nice cigar, explaining the process for Tour eligibility in 1986. A collegiate golfer, he knew he had what it took to make it professionally as a golfer…or did he? He explains his early career and what it was like playing against greats like Arnold Palmer and Greg Norman. We fast forward a bit to 2008 and ask Rocco what he was thinking when he had to play in a playoff for the title against Tiger Woods on a Monday. His response is gold. After talking a bit about that certain day in 2008, we navigate over to his golf world now and what he does off the course when he's not studying his lie angles or degrees of bounce. We end the show with our standard Tap-In segment where Rocco is asked 4-5 questions that demand his quick reply. This week we skip the headlines and get straight to the good stuff: our 2021 preview of the US Open! This week we see golf's biggest tournament return to Torrey Pines in beautiful La Jolla, California. Last time the event was hosted at this venue, Tiger woods came out victorious completing his 3rd career grand slam, defeating Rocco Mediate in sudden death holes on a broken leg. Here's to hoping that something equally as historic will go down this week! In our standard preview format, we open up by talking about the course and some differences we may see from the USGA's setup vs. the PGA Tour event that takes place here every year. Brent also takes us through some challenging stretches and some ongoing themes and challenges that the course will present all week long. Then we break down some of the field and discuss who we'll be watching out for this week. John does a deep dive into some key statistics that will lead to success at Torrey and we debate which type of player should come out one top: someone who plays Torrey Pines well, or someone who plays well at the US Open. Finally, we wrap up the episode with some picks for who we think will take home the Championship Trophy and the largest payout of the year. Greg McLaughlin, President PGA TOUR Champions talks about the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai returning to the Big Island of Hawaii for the 22nd year. It's the season opening event for the PGA TOUR Champions with official event champions of the 2016 and 2017 seasons, winners of the majors from recent years and professionals by invitation with a minimum of five or more career victories, including one major. Played on the beautiful Hualalai Golf Course, designed by Jack Nicklaus at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka’upulehu, the Pro-Am is on Tuesday January 16 and Wednesday January 17 Thursday, Friday, and Saturday January 18-19-20 is the 54 hole stroke play event broadcast on NBC Golf Channel. It's a 1.8 million purse. Bernhard Langer defends. Advance tickets are available at pgatour.com/mec $20 One Day Pass / $40 Tournament Pass (purchase on website) or at the Gate tournament week for $25 Tournament Day and $ 45 Tournament Week Pass . I think one of the best aspects of this Mitsubishi Electric Championship is monies raised for our local charities. The Rotary Club of Kona organizes the 300+ volunteers with Kris Hazard and Larry Webb continuing as volunteer co-chairs and in return the tournament donates to the Rotary Club of Kona Community Foundation. Big Island Junior Golf and the Daniel R Sayre Foundation are also recipients. 2018 Eligible Player Field: Michael Allen, Stephen Ames, Woody Austin, Paul Broadhurst, Fred Couples, John Daly, Marco Dawson, Joe Durant, Carlos Franco, David Frost, Doug Garwood, Paul Goydos, Jay Haas, Kohki Idoki, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Brandt Jobe, Jerry Kelly, Bernhard Langer, Tom Lehman, Jeff Maggert, Scott McCarron, Rocco Mediate, Colin Montgomerie, Jesper Parnevik, Tom Pernice,Jr., Kenny Perry, Gene Sauers, Vijay Singh, Esteban Toledo, Kirk Triplett, Duffy Waldorf, Mark Wiebe Sponsor Exemptions: Olin Browne, Mark Calcavecchia, Fred Funk, Peter Jacobsen, Corey Pavin, Loren Roberts, Jeff Sluman, David Toms Hall of Fame Eligible: Hale Irwin, Tom Kite, Sandy Lyle, Larry Nelson, Mark O’Meara, Jose Maria Olazabal, Tom Watson, Ian Woosnam I think it is significant that Greg McLaughlin was involved with many of the current PGA TOUR Champions players as they were coming up and making strides on the PGA TOUR. Before he joined the PGA TOUR as Senior VP of PGA TOUR Championship Management, Greg was Tournament Director of the PGA Northern Trust Open (formerly Nissan Open), Honda classic, BMW Championship and Director of the Tiger Woods Foundation for 14 years. At the Nissan Open in 1992 at Rivera Country Club in LA Greg was responsible for providing Tiger Woods with his first exemption to compete in a PGA TOUR. Fred Couples won the Nissan Open that year. I was at that 1992 Nissan Open and it was the first time I met Greg McLaughlin and it was the first time I ever saw Tiger Woods. He was around 16 years old. I was just venturing to other venues to cover golf and I'll always remember how helpful and friendly Greg was to me when I got press credentials for the Nissan Open over several years. I appreciate having worked with and been very involved with the PGA TOUR Champions and Kelly Fliear, Tournament Manager for 22 years now. It's been fun to weave so many relationships in the world of golf in my hometown Detroit and Hawaii into my life. For instance Brian Goin. Brian had been Tournament Director of the Ford Seniors in Detroit for many years and then as Director of PGA Tour Championship Management we worked together on the Mitsubishic Electric Championship at Hualalai. We have mutual friends in the Detroit Media and handful of my friends from Detroiters have for years played in the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai Pro-AM and we have a few spots open for this year. Greg and I mention Warwick Hills in Grand Blanc, Michigan being the site in September 2018 for the PGA TOUR Champions Ally Challenge. Warwick Hills hosted the Buick Open for 45 years through 2009. As a junior golfer aspiring to play professional golf in the 1960's, attending the Buick Open was very special. So grateful for the game of golf and the relationships in my life through golf professionally and personally. The 2017 Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai will be Tuesday January 17-Saturday January 21. The final round being on Saturday means football fans who love golf too can stay home and watch football on Sunday!!!! Kelly Fliear, Tournament Manager and I have worked together on this tournament for 20 years. We share some stories about what a wonderful week it is in so many ways. Meanwhile here are specifics ... . It's a PGA TOUR Champions tournament with official event champions of the 2015 and 2016 seasons, winners of the majors since 2012 and ten professionals by invitation with a minimum of five or more career victories, including one major. It's a wonderful event for spectators on the beautiful Hualalai Golf Course, designed by Jack Nicklaus at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka’upulehu. The Pro-Am is on Tuesday January 17-Wednesday January 18 and for the 54 hole stroke play event broadcast with a 1.8 million purse will be broadcast on NBC Golf Channel Thursday, Friday and Saturday January 19-21. Duffy Waldorf will defend. Advance tickets are available at pgatour.com/mec Week. $20 One Day Pass / $40 Tournament Pass (purchase on website) or at the Gate $25 Tournament Day Pass $ 50 Tournament Pass . The PGA Champions Tour players who have qualified for this years tournament are: Michael Allen, Billy Andrade, Woody Austin, Paul Broadhurst, Olin Browne, Mark Calcavecchia, Roger Chapman, Fred Couples, Joe Daley, Marco Dawson, Joe Durant, Carlos Franco, David Frost, Doug Garwood, Paul Goydos, Jay Haas, Kohki Idoki, Lee Janzen, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Bernhard Langer, Tom Lehman, Jeff Maggert, Scott McCarron, Rocco Mediate, Colin Montgomerie, Jesper Parnevik, Kenny Perry, Gene Sauers, Jerry Smith, Esteban Toledo, Kirk Triplett, Duffy Waldorf, Mark Wiebe, Ian Woosnam. The 10 sponsor exemptions include John Daly, Fred Funk, Hale Irwin, Tom Kite, Davis Love III, Sandy Lyle, Larry Nelson, Mark O’Meara, Tom Pernice Jr., Loren Roberts, Vijay Singh, Jeff Sluman, Jerry Smith, David Toms, Tom Watson Kelly Fliear, Tournament Manager and Brian Goin, head of PGA Tour Championship Management, Dave Senko, Senior Manager Communications at the PGA Tour, Pete Rolfing, PCR Sports< M and so many others who return each year. While we get an opportunity to see up close, Champions Tour players and be inspired by their golf, I think one of the best aspects of this event for the last 20 years is the funds that have been raised for local charities. The Rotary Club of Kona organizes the volunteers with Kris Hazard and Larry Webb continuing as volunteer co-chairs and in return the tournament donates to the Rotary Club of Kona Community Foundation. Big Island Junior Golf is one of the charities as well. I always look forward to Saturday when the keiki from the Big Island Junior Golf in Hilo sponsored by Mitsubishi come to the tournament after they play their own tournament at Mauna Lani Resort. They are knowledgeable golf fans and so enthused when getting autographs. While players are good with the fans, they are especially attentive to the juniors. In the past Tom Watson and Hale Irwin each year have a special interaction with the keiki joking and interacting with them as they signs autographs. I have friends who were junior golfers when this event started 20 years ago on the Big Island and no question being around this quality golf inspired my friends to practice, get on their high school team, earn college scholarships and a handful are now professional golfers. The Daniel R Sayre Foundation is another one of the charities. The Foundation was created by Dr. Frank and Laura Sayre in memory of their son Daniel who lost his life in a hiking accident 20 years ago in Pololu Valley. Recognizing the need for rescue equipment, the Daniel R Sayre Foundation with tremendous community support has raised well over a million dollars in monies and equipment for our Hawaii County Fire Department and Rescue Teams. David Marr III, Mark Rolfing, and Jay Radzavicz all with NBC Golf Channel return each year to be part of the broadcasts and reports from the Mitsubishi Electric Championship and lend their support for an event at Nanea with some of the Champions Tour players raising funds for the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association. The PGA Tour, Brendan Moynahan, Director of Golf Hualalai Golf Club and his staff, Kahu Billy Mitchell, “Uncle” Earl Regidor Manager, Ka’upulehu Cultural Center, the Four Seasons Resort staff and the volunteers have year after year created a world class event with players that just might inspire you to work on your golf game a little more or volunteer next year.

Todd talks about Will playing at Wofford College and being on the tour for a long time and was eventually able to win. Todd said that Will had not played well at Jack's place before. He beat a stout field and some great golfers chasing him down. Todd spoke with Rory McIlroy Monday night. Rory said he was in his jet on the tarmac in Ohio ready to leave after he was in the clubhouse with a 13-under par, was ready to leave but waited about 90 minutes before he flew off ... he left when someone posted a better score. Holly and Todd talk about Rickie Fowler who has not played well for the past several events and is trying to make the Olympic team as well as heading into the heart of the PGA season. Todd and Holly talk about Dustin Johnson as well as Matt Kuchar and Phil Mickelson's play of late. Todd mentions that the Golf Channel is covering the first two rounds of the U.S. Open, They will be on the grounds broadcasting Monday. On Wednesday The Golf Channel is showing an in-depth interview with Rory McIlroy on the 5 year anniversary of his win at the U.S. Open Vartan Kupelian, long time writer for Detroit News and writer for the Champions Tour, calls in from the Senior Players Championship to talk about the Champions Tour' next major Championship which is in Philadelphia.  Vartan shares that the Champions Tour plays all of these great historic courses that some of the other tours do not play on and he is so grateful that he gets to cover the events. Holly asks Vartan about the Champions Tour players like Colin Montgomerie, Bernhard Langer, and others who are so successful. Vartan comments that these guys all work their tails off and always have. He also said that some of them are so much better than 20 years ago when they played on the PGA Tour now that they have the growth and have less pressures than before when they were trying to have a career and support their families. Holly asks Vartan about Rocco Mediate's recent win. Vartan says it's always a pleasure to interview someone like Rocco. When you are done and look over your notes you can write about 9 different stories.  Steve Eubanks, Global Golf Post calls in from the Seattle Washington area, the site of the second LPGA major of the season to talk with Holly and Will. Steve said that this is one of the most narrowest golf courses that he has ever seen. It's littered with pine trees. It's beautiful but tighter than a bowling alley and going to be a shot makers paradise this week. Anna Nordqvist won the latest event on the LPGA defending her ShopRite LPG Championship title.  Holly asks Steve about who are the favorites to win this week. Players like Lydia Ko and Ariya Jutanugarn. Steve says that Ariya is playing on another level right now and likens what she can do on the golf course to how Tiger used to be making shots that others couldn't even dream of making. Holly and Steve talk about Inbee Park looking to win her fourth consecutive Women's PGA Championship title, a feat no one has accomplished. Steve said that unfortunately Inbee's thumb injury will probably prevent her from doing that. The trio also talk about Inbee being eligible for the Hall of Fame at the ripe age of 27 after she completes one round this week. She will have met the requirements.   Brentley Romine, Golfweek, calls in to wrap up the show. Brentley talks to Holly and Will about the Oregon Ducks winning the individual and team titles. Oregon beat Texas in extra holes 3-2 to win. People were counting out Texas without Beau Hossler, who missed his final match after suffering a shoulder injury the day before.  Will asks about home field advantage. Brentley talks about the advantages and disadvantages of playing in front of home fans.  Holly asks Brentley about a possible rules change letting substitutions play for injured players. He said that it will be something that will probably happen in the near future. A substitution would have helped out Texas who lost Hossler and Oregon had a player who was sick.  Brentley talks about some of the women and men who are going to come out of college and turn pro now that the college season has ended.

Holly opens the show talking about her recent participation, along with Will's, at the 2016 International Network of Golf Spring Conference in Heber Valley, Utah. A quick look at the headlines, Jordan Spieth won the DEAN and DELUCA Invitational at Colonial which earned him the plaid jacket and his first PGA Tour win in Texas. Rocco Mediate beat Colin Montgomerie to win his first major on the Champions Tour and Ariya Jutanugarn posts her third consecutive win on the LPGA Tour.   Bob Harig, ESPN.com, checks in from Muirfield Village, and talks with Holly about Bob's article on ESPN.com covering the PGA Tour's announcement that it is moving the Doral event at Trump National to Mexico City. The PGA Tour has not been able to find a sponsor for the event since Cadillac announced that it would no longer be the sponsor. Bob said that the event has a $9.5 million purse and a group in Mexico stepped up to be the title sponsor for the World Golf Championship event.  Now there will only be three events in the "Florida Swing" as compared to four from before.  Kevin asks Bob if he thinks that the event didn't get a sponsor because of  Donald Trump's political views? For more than 50 years they have managed to get a sponsor even when it became a WGC event. There are a lot of positives for it to stay in Doral and there will be a lot of consequences for the tournament not being there economically. Holly asks Bob about the Memorial this week and having three of the top players in the field in Jason Day, Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth all coming off recent wins competing against one another. Jack Nicklaus talked about the "big three" in the press tournament as compared to the Big Three of the past.  Lance Ringler, Golfweek, calls in from the 2016 Men's NCAA Championship in Oregon. Beau Hossler, Texas player, injured his shoulder during Tuesday's round and was able to hold on to win and put Texas in the finals against Oregon. Unfortunately Hossler had to concede his match today so Oregon only needs to win two more to become national champs. Kevin talks to Lance about Aaron Wise winning the individual national championship.  Holly asks Lance about the women's national championship which was recently won by the Washington Huskies . The event the past two years since switching to match play has been great golf to watch and some feel is doing a lot for women in golf. It was theatrical, dramatic and the atmosphere was electric and was the same thing last year at The Concession Golf Club with Stanford and Baylor. Women were holing shots to extend matches and to win matches. Holly talks about Duke's Virginia Carta winning the individual title in impressive fashion as a freshman. It was her first collegiate victory.  Steve Eubanks, Global Golf Post calls in to wrap up the show. Steve co-authored the book, "Mr Hogan The Man I Knew, with former LPGA player Kris Tschetter. Holly also asks Steve about Ariya Jutanugarn's domination on the LPGA winning three of the last three events. Steve said that Ariya did something that no other ladies player has done, followed her first win on the LPGA with two more consecutive wins.  Holly asks Steve about Ariya's background. She was supposed to be Lydia Ko before Lydia Ko. She is so long and straight off the tee. It's a high-launch, low-spin rocket off the tee. Not many women can hit a 9 iron more than 160 yards like she can. Steve said that Ariya was injured clowning around at Rochester, which was a huge set back for her both physically and emotionally. No she has her confidence back and she is performing like she can. Holly asks Steve about Michelle Wie and her status of late since her injury. Steve is wondering if its the end of Michelle's career on the LPGA?  Holly asks Steve about Tiger's return to the tour. Steve says Tiger may return next year, may win again, but probably won't win another major. Steve and Holly talk about Rocco Mediate's win on the Champions Tour over Bernhard Langer ad Colin Montgomerie.

Jimmy Ballard, Pioneer of Connection. No instructor in the game of golf has ever resurrected more champion golf swings than Jimmy Ballard. Residing a the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, Florida, the founding "Pioneer of Connection in the golf swing, Jimmy Ballard continues as one of the top golf instructors in the world. In 1988 alone, Ballard's "connection" method stimulated victories in four major international tournaments with the U.S. Open Winner Curtis Strange, (who would add another Open title in '89); Masters Champion Sandy Lyle; British Open victor Seve Ballesteros, and British Amateur champion, Sweden's Christian Harden. A teachers' "Grand Slam" if there ever was one. From top money winners, to PGA / LPGA / SR.PGA champions and record breaking accuracy merits, Ballard has been praised for their successes. Named by Golf Magazine, the '80's "Teacher of the Decade", Ballard began setting his sights to the future. In '86, he was invited to join the telecast of the British Open at Turnberry for ESPN, returning to television after regular appearances from his highly popular home video instructional series, "The Jimmy Ballard Golf Connection". A demand for further directional videotapes was met with the '89 release of "The Fundamental Golf Swing."During these early years, Ballard created a dictionary of golf terminology sufficient in it's scope to assist the beginner as well as the professional. His famous "Seven Common Denominators" and "Misleading Terms" swept golf magazine headlines nationwide, reaching international recognition by the late 1970's. His 1981 book, "How To Perfect Your Golf Swing," outlined the golf swing in sequential detail, specifying inaccuracies in teaching golf over the years due to his discovery of a "deceptive feel" as opposed to actuality, and clarifying the "identifiable essential movements present in great ball strikers "…. Dave is a playing and teaching professional in Orange County California. He has obsessively been studying the golf swings of the games greatest players and the teachings of what are considered to be the world's best teachers for the past 30 years. As Dave's teaching philosophy developed he realized that the “true” secret of the golf swing is the clubface and the ability of the golfer to control it throughout the entire golf swing. The majority of golfers in the world do not have a good understanding of the clubface position throughout the swing. Dave made the clubface position throughout the entire golf swing the center piece of his professional instruction, which resulted in his students achieving greater success much more quickly.www.clubfacegolf.comAvila Beach Golf Resort - www.avilabeachresort.com Blacklake Golf Resort - www.blacklake.comInn at Avila Beach - www.avilabeachca.comAvila LaFonda Hotel - www.avilalafondahotel.comGolfland Warehouse - www.golflandwarehouse.comSlickstix - www.slickstix.comFor more information on Golf Talk Radio with Mike & Billy visit www.golftalkradio.com and visit www.centralcoasttoday.com for Golf Talk TV with Mike & Billy.
