Once again, Moonlight Tim returns to the course with Sam Meuret. This time they head west for the Mid-Amateur Qualifier. Like our previous episodes with Sam, this pod was recorded in two parts. Part one of the interview is Tim and Sam on the road to Shadow Ridge, and part two is the road home. The relationship between the caddie and the golfer is like the pitching coach and the ace or the quarterback and the offensive coordinator. Though Tim and Sam took a long break between podcasts and tournaments, they go together like a round of golf and an ice-cold 6-pack.   The road trip to Nebraska includes topics ranging from NIL deals to what it would take to get Sam into the LIV tour. The team talks about it all as they get ready for Sam's next shot. The design of a tournament like the Mid Amateur Qualifier is to give post-collegiate golfers (ages 25 and over) a shot at qualifying for the US Open or a US Senior Open. This qualifier takes Sam back to Omaha as he and Tim prepare to play Shadow Ridge Country Club.    In an effort to win an amateur title, Sam called Tim out of the bullpen. Tim went back to the exact outfit he wore the first time he caddied for Sam. However, the outfit didn't bring any extra luck, as Sam played well but not well enough. This was an 18-hole qualifier, so Tim and Sam had one day and one round to make it happen. Despite 15 solid holes, three scores added about seven strokes to his total and kept him from taking home the medal.   The drive home gives Tim and Sam a chance to break down the day. They go through everything from their flag-tattooed partners, an opponent withdrawing, figuring out where Tim can push as a caddie and where they can grow as a team. By the time these guys pull into Des Moines, they sound like they are ready to hit the range and get ready for the next qualifier.

The PGA Tour stayed in New England for the Travelers Championship, where Xander kept it together to notch a victory in Connecticut. Hosts Alex Lauzon and Michael Russell look at his win, Theegala's 72nd hole collapse, and an amateur's surprisingly good week (1:49). The LIV Tour heats up again this week in Portland, and that dirty oil money keeps buying golfers to jump ship, including Brooks Koepka, but also forces the PGA Tour to change up their own schedule (5:02). The KPMG US Women's PGA Championship electrified the DC area this weekend at Congressional, where a surging Lexi Thompson wasn't able to overcome her own short game to beat In Gee Chun (11:47).  Across the country at LA Country Club, Irishman Padraig Harrington won the US Senior Open in his first attempt, becoming the third golfer in a row to win in their debut at the major championship (13:46). This week's John Deere Classic event is a bit of a snooze-fest ahead of the Open Championship, but you can always watch the Scottish Open instead on a major US network all weekend (15:26). The CoL Book Club continues with Alan Shipnick's "Phil," and the guys are knee deep in the emotional story of Phil's 2010 Master's victory, and Phil's growing gambling problems on and off the course (17:07). In Tuned In, the guys head to the movies and give us their reviews. Alex finally caught the new Tom Cruise blockbuster "Top Gun 2," while Michael got to see The King in "Elvis" (27:11). This week's guest is a professional golfer from Australia, known best in the states for beating Tiger Woods twice in the annual match play tournament, Nick O'Hern. Nick chats with Alex about growing up "down-under," beating Tiger, his new book "Tour Mentality," and being a part of the new D3 Golf App (31:28). It's almost July, and Alex's Red Sox are surprisingly surging in the AL East, but they still have a long way to go to catch Michael's Yankees (1:00:37). The Stanley Cup was finally given out, and included on the Colorado Avalanche is a fellow Quinnipiac alum, Devon Toews (1:01:38). As the guys #AlwaysEndWithFood, Alex is getting all greasy with his favorite hangover food, while Michael is making babka with Oreos (1:02:29).

In this episode, my guests are Champions Tour Pro Scott Verplank, the Golf Channel's Damon Hack, Top Junior Player Avery Zweig, and an amateur golfer that I truly envy Wayne Talsky. Scott Verplank starts off hearing memories from his amazing college golf career at Oklahoma State. Scott talks about why a Texas boy crossed rival state lines to play at OSU. We also hear about the National Championship they won in 1983, how he won the individual title in 1986, and how he doubled down and won the US Amateur that year as well. Scott also takes us inside what it was like being a part of the winning 1985 US Walker Cup team, being a part of two US Ryder Cup teams, and winning the 1985 Western Open on the PGA Tour as an Amateur. Damon Hack joins me fresh off covering the Ryder Cup. He talks about what it was like being on the grounds of Whistling Straits and immersed in that fandom. He also shares his insights on how Captain Stricker molded this group into a team, whether Patrick Reed will ever be a part of a US team again, and overreaction Monday to the European team's loss. Avery Zweig is one of the top US junior players in the country. She's currently 4th in the AJGA Girl's rankings and #1 for the class of 2025. At 14 she's won just about every junior title out there including the Annika Invitational earlier this year. She was a member of the US Jr. Solheim Cup team and qualified as the 1st alternate for this year's Women's US Open. We hear all those stories and more. Wayne Talsky is a wonderful long-time listener and supporter of the show. He is also a fantastic amateur player who has played courses that are on all of our bucket lists. He shares his experience going through trying to qualify for the US Senior Open earlier this year at The Bear's Club. He took his Next on the Tee hat on a fantastic golf adventure this summer to New York and he played some of the courses we'd all like to get on like National Golf Links, Hudson National, and the Golf Club at Southhampton. Wayne talks about that trip plus his time at Augusta National as well.

Hello Fellow Golfists,Max Homa won at Riviera today and it was great to see him win his 2nd tournament on the PGA Tour.  I was again sad to see that Tony Finau could not seal his 2nd win on tour.  But Max Homa is from Burbank California.  I used to work at DeBell Golf Course in Burbank which means that Max Homa very likely played at DeBell GC back when he was young.  I enjoyed remembering my time at The Greens at Valencia which was very near the 14th tee at Valencia Country Club the site of the 1998 Nissan Open.  It was the only time in the modern era that the Nissan / Los Angeles Open was held at a different venue other than Riviera CC, because the US Senior Open was held at Riviera CC in 1998.  I had a great time chatting with Jesse Parra from Phoenix Arizona.  Please check out Ep 34 of The Knackered Golfist Podcast too.  Thank you for listening to The Knackered Golfist Podcast.
