State of the Arts Episode 206 now available on Spotify! Back in October my husband composer/filmmaker Joe Grado and our dear friend filmmaker/producer Joe Hughes challenged ourselves to make a film within a 24 hour time frame. We merged our talents to create “Park Bench,” a light-hearted feel-good comedy with a valuable message.
Joe Hughes speaks to Eithne Dodd about his son Sean who died of sepsis in 2018 and Dr Diarmuid Quinlan, medical director of the Irish College of GPs, explains why its so important for GPs to recognise the signs of possible sepsis.
David Thetford and Gary Ashby are joined by former Texas Tech assistant baseball coach Joe Hughes to talk about his career with Tech and his consulting business. They are also joined by Dr. Mike Gustafson to talk about the MLB Playoffs and who they think could win it all.

With tax season coming to an end, it's a good moment to discuss the vital role that our tax system plays in our lives. At its best, the tax system makes the economy work better for everyone. At its worst, it deepens existing economic injustices. In this episode, we focus on two aspects of the tax system. First, we discuss Oregon's record-breaking kicker, which is sending massive tax rebates to the rich, while giving little or nothing to those struggling the most. OCPP's Daniel Hauser explains the policy and discusses how to make the kicker work better for Oregonians. In the second half of the show, we focus on the importance of having a well-funded Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Joe Hughes from the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy discusses the long-term erosion of the agency's budget, as well as recent efforts to turn things around.
The history of the printing industry in the United States was forever changed with the installation of a Linotype typesetting machine in June 1886 in the offices of the New York Tribune newspaper. Linotype produces lines of words as a single strip of metal, rather than hand setting type by individual letter. It streamlined the typesetting process making it faster to produce a page of type.
We sit down with Joe Hughes and John Jones from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania death, doom, noise act Caged to discuss their new album From Roving About the Earth, out now on Translation Loss Records. We discuss the band's journey and inspiration, the role that no-input mixers and turntables play in their music and the importance of innovation and experimentation in the underground scene. We also talk about Joe's other project Quiet Man and its debut album The Starving Lesson, whether fusion cuisine is a good idea, musical highlights of 2023 and much more. The Hughes family resides at the Jersey Shore, where they enjoy being active in sports, surfing, traveling, and hosting friends and family at their home.
