Our deep thoughts for construction estimators are brought to us this week by Norm Foster in his book, first published in 1961, Construction Estimates from Take-off to Bid. In this helpful book, Mr. Foster reminds contractors that, “A good estimate is built around a good set of quantities and a proper feeling for cost, rather than being a by-product of statistics.” This is the nexus between the art and the science of construction estimating. If you want better outcomes from your construction estimates, focus on “a good set of quantities” This aligns with what we have termed “Thorough Data Capture” or TDC and “a proper feeling for cost” which mirrors what we have termed “Accurate Data Input” or ADI. Stick around as we discuss a simple formula for better construction estimates. How important is moisture documentation? It is the key to getting paid for disaster response and property restoration projects large or small. As we continue our discussion regarding Robert Jordan Construction (RJC) versus the Arlington Independent School District (AISD), it would appear a lack of documentation cost this contractor upwards of $1.2 million dollars. On a daily basis, intentional restorers are flooded (pun intended) with tidal waves of information. If a restoration contractor wants to learn and perform their duties in a manner that is in step with the best practices in their industry, they have to filter through a lot of misinformation (dare we say, BS). Founding Father, Cliff Zlotnik, shares his perspective on how modern restorers can get a clearer grasp on solid information so they can form and train stellar habits for serving their clients in need. In a video clip from The DYOJO Podcast Episode 96, Cliff says, “I think a lot about complication. People can be made to feel helpless. I think that's what happens with a lot of these products. They give you this really sophisticated sales pitch. There are all kinds of numbers with equations and math, and none of us are good at math. People figure that they don't understand it. Therefore, the person who invented it is smarter than them. But it's not necessarily true.” Cliff, who has heard it all in his decades of working in this industry, says that filtering through industry information begins with a simple question. He says, “Ask them to explain to you simply. How does it work? Imagine that I'm a six-year-old and explain it to me.” Mr. Zlotnik says if this test was good enough for Albert Einstein it should be good enough for our industry. He continues, “If these people cannot explain it to a six-year-old, they don't understand it themselves.” Tune in Thursday for the full discussion with Cliff and several others as we discuss the importance of job site documentation. Property restoration historian and watchdog, Pete Consigli, writes, "Lloyd [Weaver] introduced the first specialty designed Porta Dryer for on-location wet carpet drying. While that might not seem like much in today's sophisticated world, 35 years ago (written in 2007) Lloyd's methodology challenged the rug cleaning establishment and its in-plant wet carpet service." Lloyd Weaver is an icon of the water damage restoration industry, he is the man behind many of the core inventions of the modern age of property restoration as well as an early educator who trained many other industry contributors; as well as butted heads with a few others. This is an extended clip, with new content, from a prior conversation (Episode 87) with another industry Founding Father, Cliff Zlotnik. Writing for Cleaning and Restoration (C&R) Magazine in March 2007, Pete Consigli identified Martin "Marty" L. King, Lloyd Weaver, Cliff Zlotnik, and Claude Blackburn as the Four Faces on Mount Restoration. Industry icon and property restoration founding father Cliff Zlotnik can be heard weekly on the O.G.'s of industry podcasting, IAQ Radio. Among his many contributions to the professional practice of water and fire damage remediation, Cliff developed an anti-microbial product that was ubiquitous in the industry. There was a time when you would be hard pressed to find a carpet cleaning extraction van or water damage emergency response vehicle that didn't have at least one gallon of Microban on the shelf (or rattling around in the cabin). For this week's episodes of The DYOJO Podcast (#87) Cliff shares a few stories about this product, some historical figures, and a few other nuggets of wisdom that will be of great benefit to intentional restorers. Martin "Marty" L. King's vision was to, "See the business of insurance restoration and damage repair become a profession." In this video, which originally aired as part of The DYOJO Podcast Episode 85, we talk to John Pletcher. Mr. Pletcher was awarded the 2022 MLK Award at the Restoration Industry Association (RIA) Annual Convention. John shares his fond memories of being mentored by and working with Marty. In the mid-1980s the Association of Specialists in Cleaning and Restoration (ASCR), which would eventually be re-branded as RIA, recognized Marty with a lifetime achievement award for his pioneering work since the late 1960s to carve a restoration niche in the larger cleaning and restoration industry as a standalone discipline from remodeling and general contracting or carpet cleaners and janitorial companies who engaged in restoration work as a sideline business activity. In 1986, the lifetime achievement award was renamed the Martin L. King (MLK) Award given to an individual who has, over many years, made significant and conspicuous contributions to the restoration profession. The August 2015 issue of Cleaning and Restoration Magazine (C&R) featured property restoration industry icon Martin “Marty” L. King in remembrance of his passing earlier that year in May. The title of the video attached to this article, “Igniter of an industry,” is recognized as a concise summary of Marty's contributions to fulfilling his vision for the craft of property restoration. Those four words were penned by another industry founding father, Cliff Zlotnik. For those interested in the history of our industry, Pete Consigli wrote an article recognizing the four faces on Mount Restoration for the same publication (C&R) in March of 2007 which the reader would do well to study. In the 2015 issue previously mentioned, Pete stated, “Marty had a vision for a new and emerging industry he called “damage repair.” Marty's life's work was to see the business of damage repair evolve into a profession. Fifty years after Marty had that dream, the legacy of the restoration industry is in the hands of those he influenced and many of those people are preparing to pass on the stewardship of the industry to the next generation. It is the hope of many that the next generation will take the industry to a place never imagined by the industry's founders.” As part of our ongoing commitment to research and share elements of property restoration history, you can read more and contribute historical content to PropertyRestorationHistory.com As Mr. Consigli says, "Reflecting on Marty's passing, it is my hope that his teachings and wisdom will be remembered with reverence. In this way, the industry will honor those who paved the path for its success today. This is how we will evolve as succeeding generations seek greatness in the restoration profession.” Additional resources on this topic: March 2007 issue of Cleaning and Restoration (C&R) Founding Fathers of Restoration Appearance on IAQ Radio Episode 75 A Brief Walk Through Restoration History (R&R Magazine) Building A Bridge From Restoration's Founding Fathers To The Modern Restorer (Cleanfax Magazine)

This week we welcome Ivan Turner, Steven LaVelle and Kent Riddle for a special show designed to help market your restoration company in tough times and beyond. The interview will focus on how to get through tough times and help ensure your marketing program brings results quickly. The team will discuss methods and techniques for marketing that can help any company but particularly restoration companies looking to survive and thrive during difficult times. The groups new e-book is called How to Successfully Market Your Restoration Business in 14 Days. Tune in for an Unprecedented Special Offer, only One recipient will be chosen Are you are experiencing a downturn in your restoration business due to a lack of jobs; an expert consulting team* seeks one candidate for free 14 day business turnaround. (*Kent "redneck millionaire" Riddle, Ivan "Showme marketing" Turner, and Steven "roving marketing reporter" LaVelle) In 100 words or less, tell the consulting team why they should select you for the free 14 day business turnaround. All entries will remain confidential. More details during the show. Ivan Turner has been in the restoration field for over 25 years. He created “Disaster Brigade” an organization that brings veterans into the restoration industry. And he is presently the CEO of ShowMe Marketing, a consulting firm that shows restoration companies how to get more work in just days. He was a featured author in the book, “How to Get More Water Damage Jobs” with a chapter that included insider secrets for getting free referrals from plumbers. Recently he said, “Drop me in any city in North America and I’ll go to any restoration company you name – then, in just 14 days I’ll have the owner, the sales team, or the newest technician bringing in more jobs.” Steven LaVelle has been researcher and writer for the restoration industry for more than 12 years. With half-a-dozen books to his credit including, “197 Ways To Persuade Adjusters, Agents, and Others To Give You The Job,” “The Restoration Book,” “How to Get More Water Damage Jobs” and “Get Paid!” which featured our own Cliff Zlotnik(the Z Man) who wrote the foreword. Steven says, “I ask the most insightful industry leaders for their best secrets, they tell them to me and I add a few ideas of my own, then write them down – that is how I create some of the best marketing books in restoration. In the final analysis I’m just a roving reporter and marketer who knows where to look and what questions to ask.” Kent Riddle is a story teller. Someone called him a “Red Neck Millionaire,” because he ran a successful franchise for many years that had an annual income in the millions of dollars and has a deep southern accent that rivals his friends in Nashville. Recently he sold his franchise for millions more, but he found retirement to be too much work! So he dove back in and created a consulting firm that helps other restoration companies become successful. He teaches with stories and he promised to share a couple today – like the one in which a group of contractors were waiting to make a presentation to the manager of a water damaged restaurant, when a competitor walked up and stole the job with just three sentences. Recently, he asked the owner and front line workers of a wildly successful franchise how they were doing during the COVID crisis – they told him, now he will tell us.
Good Day and welcome to Iaqradio+. This week we are going to replay one of our best panels from the HBS 2019. This panel was the PRACTICE to Research; Restoration Panel. Members of the panel were John Downey, Ralph Moon, PhD, Felicia Cianciarulo, PhD and Cliff Zlotnik. Each panel was asked to present research that most practitioners would not be aware of and that could be incorporated into their practice. Or they could promote and discuss topics that practitioners feel need more research. This panel did a great job on both counts. We had a great time at the summit and a fantastic group of speakers. Our thanks go out to all the attendees, speakers and exhibitors.

While preparing for our tenth anniversary we have spent a great deal of time going back through the archives and discussing the fantastic guests we have had over the years. This week for the Ten Year Anniversary Show we plan to look at how much things have changed and/or stayed the same during ten years of IAQ Radio. We will also discuss what the future looks like and get the thoughts of some of our regular guests who will call in and give their perspective. We started ten years ago with the following description on the Talkshoe website. This is the place where the world discusses indoor air quality, the built environment and disaster restoration issues. Every Friday at noon ET the show is live. The shows host are Joe Hughes, President of IAQ Training Institute and Cliff Zlotnik, President Emeritus of Microban Systems. Every week we interview experts from the indoor air quality, building sciences and disaster restoration industry. As instructors for IAQ and disaster restoration training programs and active participants in industry associations we have the credibility and contacts necessary to bring top industry experts as guests on the show every week. The show is designed to help promote education and communication for industry professionals and consumers in need of assistance with IAQ, built environment and disaster restoration issues. We THANK our listeners and hope you all feel we have been true to that description for all these years!

The most recent edition of the IICRC Journal of Cleaning, Restoration & Inspection included two articles about the state of the water damage restoration industry. The article "Concerns over the State of the Water Damage Restoration Industry" by Cliff Zlotnik detailed the history of water damage restoration and provided a fascinating critique of the foundation behind the IICRC Applied Structural Drying certification and its subsequent incorporation into the IICRC S500 Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Water Damage Restoration. The article by Ken Larsen Unintended Consequences of In-Place Drying and the ANSI/IICRC S500 re-enforced and added to the critique by Zlotnik. These articles have got people thinking and have lead to a great deal of positive feedback to the authors and "The Journal's" editor John Downey. This week on IAQ Radio we have all the key players joining us along with a few people that commented on the articles. We also have frequent IAQ Radio contributor and The Global Restoration Industry Watchdog Pete Consigli. These articles question some of the foundation of a multi-billion dollar industry and a commonly used drying process.

Last week was the IAQ Training Institute, IAQ Radio and the The Restoration and Specialty Cleaners Association (TRSCA) got together to sponsor the Healthy Building Summit 2015. "The Summit" is a week long event that includes courses on mold, indoor environmental quality, water damage restoration plus this years main event the IEQ, Mold and Disaster Restoration Conference. The conference featured speakers such as Dr. Jeff Siegel, Dr. Joe Spurgeon, Kevin Kennedy, Carl Grimes, Dr. Patricia Cafaro, Eric Shapiro, Luke Gard, Richard Rue, Nate Adams, Dr. Eva King, Dr. Ralph Moon, Cliff Zlotnik, Pete Consigli, Ed Ranieri, Jim Pemberton, Marc Selvitelli and Dave Drinnard who arranged for a hands on demo of the Echo blaster. We also continued our tradition of doing research projects. This years projects were on how containments affect IEQ parameters and measurement of allergen load before and after specific response actions. This week on IAQ Radio Radio Joe, Pete Consigli, Ed Ranieri and Nate Adams will discuss what was learned and what practitioners, researchers and building owners need to know to keep buildings healthy and sustainable. Some of the information will surprise you. The Summit was a great success this year and the "Practice to Research" theme was a big hit. LEARN MORE this week on IAQ Radio!

This week we welcome back the Restoration Industry Global Watchdog Pete Consigli for Part Three of his stroll down restoration lane with the Z-man Cliff Zlotnik. Two weeks back Pete was in Pittsburgh to sit down with The Z-man and for a retrospective conversation about their longtime relationship that has spanned almost 4 decades. The show could be characterized as "Restoration Confidential". It was personal, insightful, controversial at times but most of all it came from the heart with a spirit of setting the record straight on many of the industry's misnomers and folklore! Two of the industry's most well known and colorful personalities sat down to reflect on their professional life together as they come to the realization that in their twilight years there is still much to be done and their "work" is still in progress! IAQ Radio listeners know Pete as a friend of the show and the Global Watchdog who helps recruit guests and support their interviews that address issues facing the restoration industry. The recent passing of industry icon Marty King who founded the original restoration industry trade group in 1971 leaves Pete and Cliff as the only remaining honorary members of RIA. Next year Pete and Cliff will celebrate 2 milestones with RIA's 70th Anniversary Convention in March and the 20th anniversary of Summer Camp in August. As IAQ Radio listeners may know, this past March in Dallas IAQA inducted Pete into its Hall of Fame for his work with Joe Lsiburek's legendary Building Science Symposium known as Summer Camp. What most listeners don't know is that Cliff was there with Pete for the first Summer Camp in 1996 as the 2 invited representatives from the restoration industry! All three of us are now back from this year's Summer Camp and we hope you will tune in this week as Pete and Cliff cap off their show about the milestone events that helped shape the industry that you know today. The will continue to give IAQ Radio listeners an insiders view on how, why and when things happened! This week Radio Joe will press Pete and Cliff to finish their retrospective and share their vision for the future of the industry with IAQ Radio listeners. LEARN MORE this week on IAQ Radio!

Steven LaVelle is a consultant and marketer for restoration companies. He co-authored "Insider Secrets for a Successful Restoration Business" and wrote the books, "197 Ways to Persuade Adjusters (and Others) to Give you the Job," and "The Restoration Book" which has strategies and tactics to get more restoration jobs." His new book, "Get Paid!" has 30 of the leading names in restoration -- including Cliff Zlotnik (the Z-man himself) writing the foreword -- telling how to get paid even when the insurance companies, mortgage companies and homeowners are holding your money back." When Steven was writing "Get Paid!" he gathered some of the superstars of restoration and the three top magazines in the restoration field -- from the RIA, Cleanfax and R & R, pulled stories from their vaults for the book. But then Steven reached outside the traditional restoration field and found authors like Diane Dennis. Diane has several websites where she gives away massive amounts of free information to help contractors and sub-contractors get paid. She has had over 100,000 orders for her contractors forms!

What is the Pittsburgh Protocol? Could it be helpful in cleaning up after Super Storm Sandy? Is it a one size fits all solution? Find the answers this week on IAQ Radio with the creator "The Z-Man" Cliff Zlotnik. This week on IAQ Radio the Creator of the Pittsburgh Protocol (who just happens to be our co-host on IAQ Radio) The Z-Man, Cliff Zlotnik will join us to discuss the Pittsburgh Protocol. The Pittsburgh protocol was developed following extensive flooding in the Pittsburgh area following Hurricane Ivan in 2004. A local client needed help cleaning up a large, badly contaminated basement. Previous efforts had been unsuccessful and may have even made things worse. It was time for some out-of-the-box thinking; someone had to come up with a cost effective, yet thorough alternative. Thus the Pittsburgh Protocol was born, LEARN MORE this week on IAQ Radio!

After several listner requests we ask co-host Cliff Zlotnik to discuss ceaning products and antimicrobials. Dr. Weyel and Radio Joe add to the discussion with questions for the owner of Microban Systems about this important and sometimes conroversial industry issue. Bottom line these products are an another tool in the toolbox for remediaton contractors and consumers but not a miracle potion.
