On a daily basis, intentional restorers are flooded (pun intended) with tidal waves of information. If a restoration contractor wants to learn and perform their duties in a manner that is in step with the best practices in their industry, they have to filter through a lot of misinformation (dare we say, BS). Founding Father, Cliff Zlotnik, shares his perspective on how modern restorers can get a clearer grasp on solid information so they can form and train stellar habits for serving their clients in need. In a video clip from The DYOJO Podcast Episode 96, Cliff says, “I think a lot about complication. People can be made to feel helpless. I think that's what happens with a lot of these products. They give you this really sophisticated sales pitch. There are all kinds of numbers with equations and math, and none of us are good at math. People figure that they don't understand it. Therefore, the person who invented it is smarter than them. But it's not necessarily true.” Cliff, who has heard it all in his decades of working in this industry, says that filtering through industry information begins with a simple question. He says, “Ask them to explain to you simply. How does it work? Imagine that I'm a six-year-old and explain it to me.” Mr. Zlotnik says if this test was good enough for Albert Einstein it should be good enough for our industry. He continues, “If these people cannot explain it to a six-year-old, they don't understand it themselves.” Tune in Thursday for the full discussion with Cliff and several others as we discuss the importance of job site documentation. This week on IAQradio we welcome an All Star cast for a frank discussion on the future of the restoration industry. Our guests were all speakers at last week's 71st International Restoration Convention and Industry Expo in Palm Springs, CA. They all gave important presentations or Keynotes at the Restoration Industry Association's (RIA) annual event. The Town Hall theme for this year's event was "The Future of the Water Damage Restoration Industry" and was facilitated by none other than IAQradio's Restoration Global Watchdog Pete Consigli! The Town Hall was the culmination of one of RIA's convention story line's that included a breakout session moderated by Ken Larsen on the Do's and Don'ts of Rebates, Referral Fees, Comps and Gratuities with Peter Crosa and well known IAQ attorney Michael Bowdoin. Ed Cross was the convention's Day 2 keynote speaker and addressed the RIA members on "The 6 New Legal Points Restorers must Understand to Survive in 2017". Crosa who is the sitting President for the National Association of Independent Insurance Adjusters (NAIIA) presented the Independent Adjusters viewpoint on the Town Hall Panel. Well known industry advocate Ed Cross aka "The Restoration Lawyer" made his case for industry unification through one voice and closed out his Town Hall panel presentation with a message to band together, "Band or Burn" was the reoccurring message! The RTPE program (Registered Third Party Evaluator) recently explained to RIA members at their annual convention in Palm Springs during their Town Hall meeting by Ken Larsen, CR, WLS, CMP may be a solution for contractors who are constantly challenged by TPA's on their scope of work and invoices. Longtime industry activist and RIA supporter Ken Larsen presented his vision for the RTPE program on the RIA Town Hall panel along with Peter Crosa, AIC, RPA and Ed Cross, Esq. Larsen has a 5 part series on the TPE concept that was previewed in the 2017 February issue of Cleaning and Restoration (C&R) magazine. A high point of the RIA annual banquet and awards ceremony was the presentation of C&R's Golden Quill award won this year by IAQradio's own, Cliff "The Z-man" Zlotnik for his article on "Concerns over the Water Restoration Industry". The culmination of the ceremony was the awarding of the association's most prestigious honor, the presentation of the Martin L. King award. The 32nd annual recipient of the Marty King award was Ken Larsen for his years of service and activism to RIA and the industry! Way to go Ken!!

The most recent edition of the IICRC Journal of Cleaning, Restoration & Inspection included two articles about the state of the water damage restoration industry. The article "Concerns over the State of the Water Damage Restoration Industry" by Cliff Zlotnik detailed the history of water damage restoration and provided a fascinating critique of the foundation behind the IICRC Applied Structural Drying certification and its subsequent incorporation into the IICRC S500 Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Water Damage Restoration. The article by Ken Larsen Unintended Consequences of In-Place Drying and the ANSI/IICRC S500 re-enforced and added to the critique by Zlotnik. These articles have got people thinking and have lead to a great deal of positive feedback to the authors and "The Journal's" editor John Downey. This week on IAQ Radio we have all the key players joining us along with a few people that commented on the articles. We also have frequent IAQ Radio contributor and The Global Restoration Industry Watchdog Pete Consigli. These articles question some of the foundation of a multi-billion dollar industry and a commonly used drying process.

This week Pete Consigli was in Pittsburgh and sat down with the Z-man and Radio Joe in Studio C for a retrospective conversation about the almost 4 decade relationship between these two restoration industry icons. This show could be characterized as ¢??Restoration Confidential¢??, it was personal, insightful, controversial at times but most of all came from the heart with a spirit of setting the record straight on many of the industry¢??s misnomers and folklore! Listen in as two of the industry¢??s most well known and colorful personalities sit down to reflect on their professional life together as they come to the realization that in their twilight years there is still much to be done and their ¢??work¢?? is still in progress! This was a tremendous show that gave us a peak into Consigli and Zlotnik¢??s Restoration Journey with a destination yet to be realized. We will finish the story with another special show following Summer Camp on August 7th at noon eastern. IAQ Radio listeners know Pete as a friend of the show and the Global Watchdog who helps recruit guests and support their interviews that address issues facing the restoration industry. The recent passing of industry icon Marty King who founded the original restoration industry trade group in 1971 leaves Pete and Cliff as the only remaining honorary members of RIA. Next year Pete and Cliff will celebrate 2 milestones with RIA¢??s 70th Anniversary Convention in March and the 20th anniversary of Summer Camp in August. As IAQ Radio listeners may know, this past March in Dallas IAQA inducted Pete into its Hall of Fame for his work with Joe Lsiburek¢??s legendary Building Science Symposium known as Summer Camp. What most listeners don¢??t know is that Cliff was there with Pete for the first Summer Camp in 1996 as the 2 invited representatives from the restoration industry! Pete and Cliff talk about the milestone events that helped shape the industry that you know today and give IAQ Radio listeners an insiders view on how, why and when things happened! During Parts 1 & 2 Pete, Cliff and Radio Joe sat down at the ¢??kitchen table¢?? and had a retrospective conversation providing the background on the most pressing issues the industry faces today. During Part 3 August 7th Radio Joe will press Pete and Cliff to finish the story and share their vision for the future of the industry with IAQ Radio listeners.
