Science Faction Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 6, 2026 66:10

The latest episode of The Science Faction spirals from Star Wars spoilers and obsolete gaming hardware to AI-powered paper interfaces, billionaire airline schemes, and a surprisingly heartfelt sci-fi short story discussion. Also: Devon's mom makes a guest appearance. Real Life Steven kicks things off with the finale of Maul: Shadow Lord, which somehow managed to exceed expectations and leave him wanting even more animated Star Wars content. That naturally led into random Star Wars news, toy leaks, and the growing suspicion that The Mandalorian and Grogu may already be accidentally spoiling itself through merchandise. Nothing says "carefully guarded cinematic surprise" like a plastic action figure showing up six months early. Ben dives deep into the glory of the New Steam Controller — the strange, awkward, beloved device whos first version maybe arrived too early for the world to appreciate. Thumbpads, gyroscopes, weird ergonomics, customization rabbit holes… the gang discusses why the controller still has devoted fans years later, and why scalpers continue to treat new tech like buried treasure. That somehow mutates into a discussion about AI infrastructure and whether we're entering a full-blown "Rampocalypse." Is AI consuming all available RAM on Earth? Why do hardware prices keep fluctuating like cursed crypto charts? Nobody has all the answers, but everyone agrees the future smells faintly of overheated GPUs. Ben also brings up the world of HFY ("Humans Eff Yeah") sci-fi stories — tales where humanity survives, thrives, or weaponizes sheer stubbornness against impossible odds. If you've ever wanted science fiction powered by caffeine, duct tape, and irrational confidence, HFY may be your genre. Meanwhile, Devon's mom came to visit. Hi mom! Steven also revisits Cyberpunk: Combat Zone from Monster Fight Club: https://monsterfightclub.com/collections/cyberpunk-red-combat-zone The crew talks miniatures, skirmish combat, and the appeal of tactical cyberpunk warfare. This naturally evolves into a completely different question: how does Hackers still have such a low Rotten Tomatoes score? Some crimes cannot be forgiven. Future or Now  Steven and Devon discover the incredible website: https://letsbuyspiritair.com/  The dream? Take ownership away from billionaires and let the people run an airline. The concerns? Literally everything else. Devon immediately begins asking practical questions like: "What happens if people pledge money and then don't pay?" This turns into an unexpectedly entertaining conversation about collective ownership, internet chaos, and the terrifying logistics of buying an airline like it's a Kickstarter for a board game. Ben brings in a fascinating essay by James Somers: https://jsomers.net/blog/the-paper-computer  Somers proposes the idea of a "paper computer," where AI bridges the gap between tactile physical objects and digital systems. Instead of staring at glowing rectangles all day, users could interact with notebooks, index cards, sketches, and handwritten notes while AI quietly handles transcription, synchronization, and organization in the background. The discussion drifts into concepts similar to Dynamicland — a future where computing becomes ambient, physical, and less psychologically exhausting. Less clicking. More touching grass. Possibly literally. Book Club (~20 min) This Week: Saint Zero of the Hollows and the Eagle Knight by V. M. Ayala https://www.lightspeedmagazine.com/fiction/saint-zero-of-the-hollows-and-the-eagle-knight/ "The only sound Zero heard in their helmet was their own hyperventilating and the gentle pings from their pegasus." The crew unanimously loved this one. The story blends sci-fi, mysticism, military imagery, and desperate emotional momentum into something that strongly reminded everyone of Red Rising. Giant-scale emotional stakes, rigid systems, brutal conflict, and characters struggling under impossible expectations — it hit a lot of the same notes in the best way. That comparison leads naturally into discussion of The Will of the Many, which Devon recently listened to during a road trip. The gang talks about recurring themes in modern science fiction: empire, hierarchy, sacrifice, rebellion, and the terrifying pressure of being "special" in worlds designed to consume people. This week's story earned a rare unanimous recommendation from the hosts. Next Week: Update on Rules for the Spatiotemporal Use of Campus Spaces by Andrea Kriz https://www.lightspeedmagazine.com/fiction/update-on-rules-for-the-spatiotemporal-use-of-campus-spaces/ "Dear Members of the Community, As we begin yet another fall semester in the throes of the rogue timestream unleashed on our campus…" Time distortions. Academic bureaucracy. Campus memos. Reality collapsing under administrative language. This already feels extremely promising.   Whether it's crowdfunded airlines, AI-powered paper notebooks, ancient Sith conspiracies, or sci-fi knights hyperventilating on robotic pegasi, this episode somehow manages to connect all of it into one giant conversation about technology, humanity, and the weird systems we build around ourselves. It's one of those episodes where the tangents get dangerously powerful, the recommendations stack up fast, and everyone leaves wanting to immediately consume more science fiction. The storm for the most of the North Island was a fizzer. The TV news struggled to find pictures of anything actually happening other than a few trees down and reporters breathlessly doing pieces to camera in the wind. In Auckland where I live most shops were closed and they didn't need to be. There is a risk of the boy who cried wolf. But I also don't think need to have an existential national conversation about whether this was over-hyped. The forecasters do their thing. They tell you what is coming. Or their best guess of what's coming. Then it's up to us to make our own decisions based on the information, our own experience and personal judgement. The businesses who decided to close yesterday before anything had actually happened lost a day's trade. The one's who didn't, didn't. Maybe next time they'll make a different call. After all, Auckland was only under an orange watch. The media coverage was over the top. It always is. Remember they make money off events like this. Eyeballs on screens. I noticed before every video on the stuff site yesterday showing ocean lapping at sand dune, there was an ad for Tower Insurance playing. They do what they do. But you can't tell MetService to not to report the weather. They're damned if they do and damned if they don't. We're all responsible for our own lives. Ultimately we can decide if we're safe enough to stay home or go to get a flat white from the local Robert Harris. And if you want to go out kite-surfing or surfin in their storm, all power to ya. You might die, or you might have an awesome Sunday, wither way it'll be your informed choice to do so.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

With over 15 years in marketing and leadership roles, Shamir has worked with major brands like Southwest Airlines, The Walt Disney Company, and NBC Universal. Previously the Senior Director in digital strategy and services for Marriott International’s Vacation Club Division, Shamir co-founded Smart Panda Labs to harness his expertise in both marketing and technical spheres, aiming to improve the post-click experience for consumers. Episode Summary: In this engaging episode of The Chris Voss Show, Chris welcomes digital marketing expert Shamir Duverseau to discuss the intricacies of technical marketing and the importance of the post-click experience. As the managing director of Smart Panda Labs, Shamir delves into how his company helps B2C enterprises optimize user experience on websites to convert traffic into loyal customers. The conversation spans topics from post-click psychology to technological marketing adaptations, highlighting the necessity of understanding customer behavior and simplifying complex shopping experiences online. The duo explore the vast potential that lies in improving the ‘post-click experience’, underscoring how businesses can unlock conversion opportunities by making their digital customer interactions seamless and intuitive. In discussing the common pitfalls in digital marketing strategies and MarTech stacks, Shamir explains how Smart Panda Labs assesses and addresses gaps in client operations to create robust sales experiences and strategy roadmaps. With insights into optimizing advertising spend and improving ROI through savvy digital experiences, Shamir shares practical advice while drawing from his vast experience in working with significant industry players. Key Takeaways: Post-Click Psychology: Engaging customers effectively after they click on an ad is crucial to converting them into buyers, primarily by minimizing friction and simplifying interactions. Importance of Seamless User Experience: Simplifying the complexities of online shopping can lead to better conversions and repeated business. Leveraging MarTech Stacks: Many companies underutilize their marketing technologies, running at just 20% of their capacity, leaving room for significant improvements. Tailored Strategy Roadmaps: Building a customized roadmap helps companies maximize their digital potential by outlining clear paths and methodologies for enhanced customer experience. Focus on Customer Satisfaction: Excellent customer service and experience can significantly impact repeat business, as seen with brands employing thoughtful, personalized touchpoints. Notable Quotes: “The internet brings an interesting mix of the creativity of marketing, the technical aspects of IT, and the product aspects of what you’re selling.” “If something has to be complicated, let’s not make the things that don’t have to be complicated, complicated.” “On the corporate side, I found that marketing people tend to be very creative, which is great. But they also tend to shy away from anything that’s technical.” “If you’ve got, if you spent the money to get someone to the site, it only makes sense to spend money where people are spending the majority of their time.” “When those two things collided. So was born Smart Panda Labs.”

Happy new year everyone! The boys are back and making plans for fun events this year. Marijn hates the fact that Steve is now higher up the CommunityDays speaker board list than Marijn. They reminisce about past events and eventually get on topic: AI doesn't care if your sites are pretty. So how much work do you need to put in to make SharePoint "pretty" for AI (AKA readable)? So what is the ratio for human eyeballs vs AI? The boys finish off with a superb Danish whisky, Skippers Glow, kindly donated by friend-of-the-podcast Kasper Larsen. It all started with this post from Daniel Anderson:https://www.linkedin.com/posts/danielando_sharepoint-in-2026-activity-7410921384069017600-m52B/

Hollywood, we need to talk. If one more movie shows an eyeball dangling from someone's cheek, I might start mailing anatomy textbooks to Los Angeles. And while we're at it, can we please stop calling every wandering eye a “lazy eye”? After a quick rant about my personal ophthalmology pet peeves, I dive into one of the strangest mystery cases I've ever seen: a 47-year-old with sudden, complete ophthalmoplegia and normal imaging. Negative myasthenia testing, normal pupils, normal MRI, nothing made sense until one very specific antibody came back positive. Takeaways: Why “lazy eye” rarely means what people think it means and what the term actually refers to. The Hollywood eyeball trope that needs to be banned forever (optical nerves are short, folks). How a patient with zero eye movement and a normal MRI sent us searching for rare neuro clues. Why myasthenia gravis seemed like the obvious answer until every serology test came back negative. The surprising role a GI infection can play in triggering Miller Fisher syndrome, the rare Guillain-Barré variant that ultimately cracked the case. This week talk about Her Blue Sky. We started clearing up some misconceptions that Rick had “13 years ago vs. 13-year-old” confusion and then we dove into the misconceptions about the guitar and why it was still weirdly brand new. From there, we talked about the main hook, the younger and older versions of Shinnosuke existing as separate people, with the younger one absolutely tearing into his older self later in the story, which led us into talking about growing up, losing your spark, and how life can jade you without fully killing the dream you started with. We also talked about the “eyeball star” birthmark idea, what it's supposed to mean, and why it initially threw us off and finally rounding it off with us swinging back to the music. One of us expected it to be way better, the other expected total garbage and was surprised it was handled tastefully. Overall, we did agree that it's a straightforward, linear story that avoids the “wait, what is happening?” problem, dodges the awkward story directions it could've taken, and lands on a message that hit us. Say what you need to say, don't let “good reasons” turn into lifelong regret, and recognize the quiet sacrifices people make.About the anime:Her Blue Sky follows Aoi, a high school bassist living in a quiet mountain town, who is itching to head to Tokyo and chase music, lives with her older sister Akane who once gave up her own dream of moving to Tokyo with her boyfriend Shinnosuke after their parents died so she could raise Aoi, and is focused on a life that was built on sacrifice and what-ifs but never regretting it or forsaking. But then everything gets shaken up when adult Shinnosuke returns to town for a local music festival and, at the same time, his teenage self suddenly appears before Aoi, like a living spirit from thirteen years ago. Now caught between past and present, the sisters and the two Shinnosukes are forced to confront old regrets, unspoken feelings, and the weight of promises that were never kept, that's all wrapped in a story about music, growing up, and figuring out how to move forward without forgetting the people who got you there.Next Week's Pick: “Lady Death”Have you had the chance to watch Her Blue Sky or any of our previous selections? We kick things off with rapid-fire questions that reveal way too much about all of us (as usual), then dive into stories about eating local foods, navigating intense-but-amazing Holy Land tours, and trying not to cry at biblical sites… but failing spectacularly. We also chat about safety (because, you know… travel), swap stories about leading tour groups without losing people, and dream about future adventures — including a Northern England and Scotland tour that we are absolutely inviting ourselves on. On this episode of P Is for Punk, we dive headfirst into the return of one of Chicago's darkest and most influential punk bands: Alkaline Trio. After a six-year gap, the Trio dropped Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs, an album that's equal parts urgent, melodic, and unapologetically bleak in the best way. We break down the band's history, the era that led to this record, and why this album marks both the end of one chapter and the rebirth of another. Spin Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs wherever you get music.  I'll figure out the format eventually..

The inevitable decline of civilization takes center stage as the show kicks off with the miserable results of the FACEBOOK SETTLEMENT, confirming Brian's $4.01 payout, followed by a discussion of the SPORTS BETTING SCANDAL, where MLB players are rigging games over prop bets, confirming that gambling is now actively killing sports; moving to the news, the guys celebrate the DENMARK SOCIAL MEDIA BAN and SCHOOL PHONE BANS, which are already proving that teenagers need mandatory digital detoxes, prompting comparisons to Footloose and the revelation that teens are now passing handwritten notes and taking Polaroids. Naturally, things aren't going well for the hyper-rich, as evidenced by the TESLA EXECUTIVE EXODUS and the launch of WAYMO FREEWAYS, which will surely bring chaos to LA, and the ongoing saga of massive capital destruction via OPENAI LOSSES and META AI FAILURES, prompting Mark Zuckerberg to announce his desperate bid to CURE ALL DISEASES with AI, a feat less audacious than the fraud of AI startup FIREFLY AI TRANSCRIPT, which admitted its original "AI" was just human transcriptionists. They then hit a laundry list of digital woes, including the dubious convenience of APPLE PASSPORTS, the creeping dread of Sam Altman's failing WORLDCOIN EYEBALL SCANS, the ridiculous crypto fraud DEFI OFFICE SPACE that literally copied a movie plot, and Coinbase's inexplicable decision to bring back high-risk ICOs; the absurdity continued with the OPENAI LAWSUIT over a suicidal chatbot that suggested the user "Rest easy, King," and the political maneuvering of the REPUBLICAN BROADBAND REDIRECT, which will gut internet access for the underserved to fund the Treasury, but the real threat to humanity remains the clandestine PREVENTATIVE GENE HACKING startup funded by tech billionaires aiming to create modified babies offshore. In Media Candy, they share reviews of the excellent DIPLOMAT, ZOOTOPIA, and the just-released LUSH DOCUMENTARY, confirming our combined Gen-X fragility, before celebrating two definitive wins for reality: the fact that physicists have finally CRUSHED THE SIMULATION THEORY, and the literary brilliance of Joyce Carol Oates' tweet, which expertly called out Elon Musk as uneducated and uncultured. All this and more on this episode of Grumpy Old GeeksSponsors:CleanMyMac - clnmy.com/OLDGEEKS - Use code OLDGEEKS for 20% off.Private Internet Access - Go to GOG.Show/vpn and sign up today.
