Guest: Todd Bermont     Guest Bio: Houston‐based, High Technology Sales and Business Development Leader with over 30 years of sales management, business development, and sales experience in Data Center Design/Build, IT, Mission‐Critical Power Infrastructure (UPS, PDU, and Solar), Professional Services, and SaaS. Recruited and hired six times by former colleagues. Sales management accomplishments include achieving record sales and profit each year for the first three full years as VP of Sales for Solarcraft and growing the OEM division of APC from $10 Million to over $100 million in four years. As Director of Business Development/Marketing for Lee Technologies, helped the company grow from $55 Million in sales to over $100 Million in two years. Having conducted business in over 20 countries, noted accomplishments include: winning several multi‐million‐dollar, new business clients, authoring numerous books, being featured on TV (CNN, FOX, & CBS) and in print (Fox Business, Forbes, and 7x24), and speaking at AFCOM Data Center World.   Key Points: Sales Success and Key Strategies: Team Composition: Hiring the right people is crucial. Todd emphasizes that success is built on a solid team and that turnover, while challenging, is part of finding the right fit. Focus on Leverage: Rather than pursuing small sales, the team focuses on targeting decision-makers who can purchase in larger volumes. This approach maximizes the return on each sales effort. Sales from Existing Customers: Todd highlights the importance of expanding within current accounts. Selling more to existing clients, especially those already approved as vendors, often leads to significantly higher revenue. Customized Compensation Plans: Salespeople's compensation plans are customized to what motivates them most, ensuring a higher level of ownership and motivation. Incentives, or "kickers," are tied to specific achievements like securing large deals or meeting quarterly revenue goals.   Hiring and Firing: Todd stresses the importance of not tolerating poor performance. He follows a principle similar to his day trading experience: when something isn't working, cut your losses quickly. Key indicators in hiring include assessing how candidates perform during the interview process (e.g., their sales skills and engagement). He has learned the importance of listening to his gut during interviews and avoiding the temptation to forgive red flags due to strong referrals. New hires are expected to produce meaningful sales activity (quotes, meetings) early on. Lack of activity often signals that someone isn't putting in the effort.   Sales Culture: Coaching and Continuous Improvement: Todd sees sales as a mental game, emphasizing the need for salespeople to believe in the product they are selling. His book, Cognitive Selling, focuses on how mental preparedness and belief in the product are key to success. Salespeople must be coachable and open to learning. Todd also emphasizes creating a strong sales strategy and requires new hires to submit a 90-day business plan to outline how they will succeed.   Key Insights: Sales growth at Solarcraft was driven by having the right people, focusing on large deals, and working to grow revenue within existing accounts. The importance of an effective, tailored compensation plan cannot be overstated—when salespeople have ownership over their earnings structure, their performance improves. Todd believes in leading by example and insists that salespeople who don't believe in what they're selling won't be successful.       About Salesology®: Conversations with Sales Leaders Download your free gift, The Salesology® Vault. The vault is packed full of free gifts from sales leaders, sales experts, marketing gurus and revenue generation experts.  Download your free gift, 81 Tools to Grow Your Sales & Your Business Faster, More Easily & More Profitably. They discuss driving next steps, deal closure, and deal acceleration along with building trust that gets to the goal line. Episode Highlights 01:38 – Tyler shares a little bit about his background. 03:06 – Sam enquires from Tyler about his sales background and origin story. 04:58 – Sam says sales wasn’t Tyler’s first call, he fell into it for lack of better terminology. 05:00 - Tyler had people skills and then he realized how does he got paid for those skills. 05:40 – What’s changed for the better and what's changed for the worse in sales from where Tyler started to where he is seeing now, asks Sam. 08:22 - What is the biggest missing component that you see in the process, enquires Sam. 10:40 – How do you think of the next steps? What's your thought process around the next steps? How do you approach those? Questions Sam. 12:49 – Tyler highlights, there's one of 14 combinations of how the sale process can play out. 14:34 – Sam asks, what does Tyler see as the main reasons next steps aren't established. 15:17 – Tyler shares, before every call he does a 20-minute prep with the BDR that sources the meeting, to understand exactly what they discovered and who did they talk to? 17:50 – We as efficient show that we understand our business and we've done our due diligence. It also allows us to be more concise with our time. 20:41 – Tyler shares, he can always move that 30-minute slot but he at least has the structure to not forget any of the details. 24:00 - If one has built the trust, resolved client needs, and given them all the resources, and then they won’t feel the need to go somewhere else, explains Tyler. 27:40 – Tyler points out, we have to go a little rogue and say, “if what other people on my team are doing doesn't work, then I'm going to do things my way.” 31:34 – Tyler mentions that sometimes it is like getting them out of their comfort zone and giving them to trust us. 32:26 – Sam says, his rule of thumb has always been under-promise, and over-deliver. 35:12 – We need to over-communicate, or find a way to get the deliverable there by that time. 37:00 – Tyler says, they need to go talk to 15 people and get to that level where they can find time for us, so, we better do all that stuff that makes it compelling to them to do that. Three Key Points We can understand what the customer truly needs, and then match our solution. We got to make sure that we're doing the right thing and it's a win for both parties. But understanding what their need is and then crafting the story to coincide with it and draw on those opportunities. All the studies are saying deals are taking longer to close complex sales deals. For the average deal, the close rates have gone down; all the things that you don't want to go down are not going in the right direction. We need to reach; we can add that additional personalized touch that even says like a handwritten note or a gift card or something that has value to them. If we don't have a gifting platform, there are ways to do that through our communication. Tweetable Quotes “I built out at the Westin in downtown Phoenix, an upsell environment that they didn't understand at the time and I'm like, I brought you guys $400,000 in revenue. I think I'm supposed to be selling things.” – Tyler “I don't have much for the worse,

The value that we bring as sales people to our organizations is really that ability, that courage to deal with chaos. Know that when you’re out there you’re not always going to have a linear response such as “I have done this, this, this and therefore, I will get that, that, that.” Be able to deal with chaos and take it head on. And, in fact, use it to your advantage.” Raza Latif serves as the President of NuAxis Innovations, an information technology services firm that supports a variety of major federal government clients. With over 20 years of experience in the ever changing IT industry, he leads NuAxis’s Business Development and Service Delivery Teams maintaining a sharp focus on creating and delivering IT solutions for the Federal Government that maximize alignment of IT and mission objective. As season two of Evolution Hospitality's podcast is launched, organizational restructuring, rapid growth, and personnel change have created the perfect storm.  Evo's Chief Wellness Officer & host, Dr. Romie Mushtaq interviews Chief Operating Officer, Will Loughran to discuss how to lead and manage stress during times of change. In this episode, we cover: Evo is a company built on a culture of practicing servant leadership, and the priority is making sure everyone reaches their full potential.  What steps leaders can take to combat the stress, anxiety, and fear that are natural during times of organizational change? Will's advice is to come back to our guiding principles including "giving each other the benefit of the doubt" and "listen."   In addition, we discuss managing emotions along with managing expectations.  Bringing that "Evo swagger" can help the company to continue to grow and create multiple verticles of inspired leadership. Evolution Hospitality is a third-party hospitality management company with corporate headquarters in San Clemente, CA.  For more information visit www.evolutionhospitality.com Show Notes: [04:12] There is so much going on in the company right now. [04:36] After our merger, we became the largest hotel company in the country. [04:49] John Murphy is moving into an advisory role. Matt Raine our Business Development Leader is going to work with our biggest partner. [05:20] Our leader of talent acquisition is also going to join John Murphy in his new venture. [05:33] All of this has created a large amount of change. [06:28] People involved in integration and working with the other teams are coming back very inspired. They are excited about new resources and strategic initiatives. [07:39] There is also a level of anxiety from other people who feel a level of uncertainty. [08:32] Dr. Romie could energetically feel the pause and the grief when the email was sent out. [09:09] We don't want to be just the biggest company, we want to be a truly excellent company. Will wants people to be confident and have that "Evo Swagger." [10:28] We want to have an incredible culture, but we are also very focused on results. [12:30] We need change management and training. We introduce a new process or integration every year. [13:31] The three programs that have helped us is our mindfulness program called The Power of Pause, emotional intelligence training, and are crucial conversations. [16:18] Guiding principles include giving the benefit of the doubt and listening. Being present is also critically important. [19:43] At Evo, we care for each other as a company. You are safe, and you are cared for. [22:04] Bring your team together and make it better than it was before. [23:58] Think about how to make the broader company better. It's not us versus the parent company. [27:15] We need to maximize performance in all verticals.  [28:46] Will takes a pause by riding his bike, meditation, and music. He loves Rock 'n' Roll. [30:50] Take the time to slow down and spend one-on-one time with people.  [32:00] Giving and accepting feedback openly is a main guiding principle for Will.  [33:01] He wants to lead everyone into making an incredible company in an inspired way. Historically, Business to Business (B2B) marketing has lived up to the stereotype of being stale and dry. While often lacking the creativity that is often found in Business to Consumer (B2C) marketing, a new era has arrived across all industries of B2B. With a disruptive mindset, and a focus on engaging prospects and audiences with information, educational, inspiring stories, marketers today are removing the stereotype that once existed. From creative storytelling in video, to the prominent use of infographics and podcast shows, marketing is rapidly changing in B2B. In this Careers Podcast with MarketScale's VP of Business Development, Tim Maitland, we dive into our open role of Business Development Director. This full-time, Dallas-based role is fit for a forward-thinking, growth-minded individual looking to sell through creative problem-solving and leadership. Having the best workholding system is just as key as having the best tools! Jim Carr and Jason Zenger know the importance of keeping up with the game as manufacturing leaders. Growing up working the shop floor, guest speaker, Alvin Goellner, is the Business Development Leader of North America at Amrok Workholding. In this episode of MakingChips, he shares the latest trends in workholding systems and why you need to implement them for optimal efficiency and quality performance in your manufacturing business. Connect with us:www.MakingChips.com/contact Optimizing your workholding process is vital to overall success The workholding process is all about how rigid you can make your setup - creating a solid foundation that will hold your material for optimal performance. Without a steady and rigid workholding system, your process will be riddled with chatter, less tolerance, and damaging vibration. While it is less of an investment to just keep upgrading your cutting and milling tools, it is still key to keep your workholding system up-to-date. The way your tool and materials are being held is vital to the outcome of the end-product. The workholding system must be rigid, robust, and competent at holding your material and efficient at resizing and holding different projects. Alvin explains that you can own the best cutting tools in the world, but without a competent workholding system, your product will not be the best on the market. The grid system evolution Alvin explains that over the years, he visited different manufacturing shops and studied the varying methods and machining solutions to the workholding process. He then went back to his own company - Amrok - and built the workholding systems that solved the problems he had found in his travels. The result was the 2-inch grid system, which has become an industry standard. While there used to be odd-sized grid systems with varying sized plates, Alvin found that most products can fit into the 2-inch grid plate. An incredibly efficient system, the hardened bushing, lock-tightened, slip fitted grid retains center distance tolerance because of its minimal clearance. 2-inch sub-plates are the common sub-plate, which allows for efficient adjustment of the numbers for varying projects. To learn more about the efficient and customizable applications of the 2-inch grid system, listen to the entire episode! Vise system optimization When projects become large a TRIAG modular vise system is the most efficient. With modular clamps that can fit almost any shape, the system boasts serrated base rails that mount on a standard, 2-inch grid and locate with dowel screws. This system enables the spindle to keep moving, thereby creating a more efficient process. The modular components can be loosened in seconds, and you don’t have to spend time indicating because of the dowel screw location. Listen to the full episode for more information on how the TRIAG modular vise system works and why it improves overall performance. What to implement now for immediate impact With so many options available on the current market, Alvin supplies three workholding systems that will instantly improve efficiency in the shop. First, optimize your foundation. Implementing a 2-inch grid system enables you to work with a lot of different system types, tools, and materials. Second, hydraulic, dedicated fixtures that automatically fit the part with a flip of the switch will save you time and energy. Third, introducing a low mix, high volume TRIAG system to your shop floor will prove invaluable. Center-less vises that mount on a rail are lighter and more efficient. Alvin explains that if you need to move from one sized part to another, the application is easy and fast, allowing you to produce more chips and earn more money. Here’s The Good Stuff! Manufacturing news: manufacturing jobs are steadily growing! Alvin Goellner: Business Development Leader at Amrok. The birth of Amrok created out of the need for a solid foundation. The versatility of a 2-inch grid system. Why optimizing the workholding process is just as important as upgrading your tools. How’s your vise grip? European vs. American workholding systems. The three most impactful workholding systems that you can implement today.
