Directorial Debut Month continues with a look at the first feature film from one of modern cinema's most exciting filmmakers: Damien Chazelle's Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench.Made on a shoestring budget and bursting with youthful ambition, this black-and-white musical tells the story of love, heartbreak, and second chances through the rhythms of jazz and the streets of Boston. Long before Whiplash and La La Land earned Chazelle Academy Awards and worldwide acclaim, this debut showcased many of the themes and stylistic flourishes that would become his trademark. We discuss the film's intimate storytelling, inventive musical sequences, and how it serves as a blueprint for the career that followed. Does this modest indie musical reveal the future Oscar-winning director in full, or is it a hidden gem that deserves recognition on its own terms?Heartfelt, energetic, and deeply personal, this is the first note in Damien Chazelle's cinematic symphony.#WatchTowerFilmPodcast #DirectorialDebutMonth #GuyAndMadelineOnAParkBench #DamienChazelle #IndependentFilm #MusicalCinema #FilmPodcast #DirectorialDebut #CinemaHistory #CinephileTalk
This episode features the most scorching NDHT (Nicholas Dostal Hot Take™) in the history of the pod. Few modern directors have been as impactful as Damien Chazelle. Alex and Nick have a blast diving into Chazelle's small but remarkable filmography. Stray topics include Justin Hurwitz's score in “Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench,” the “Whiplash” short film, the lasting magic of “La La Land,” the sound in “First Man,” the cultural reclamation of “Babylon,” and much more.Visit our brand new website waywpodcast.comBuy WAYW MerchJoin WAYW Bonus Features on Patreon
There's a cannon in most towns. Next to a plaque nobody reads. Families take photos there during the day. Men cruise there at night, cars idling, windows fogged, child seats in the back. That gap is exactly what legacy does.In this episode, Gavin Stephens looks at legacy as a cultural technology — not a tribute, but a selection mechanism. Monuments don't remember everyone. They decide who counts. And once you see that, you can't unsee it in vision boards, retirement plans, factory jobs, productivity apps, and the White House.Topics include: Camus and absurdism, the myth of meritocracy, why retirement is backwards, the self-help industry as hierarchy maintenance, and why making a podcast about not needing to be remembered is not ironic — it's just honest.Park Bench Ontology is hosted by Juno-nominated comedian and Canadian Screen Award-winning writer Gavin Stephens. Equal parts philosophy, stand-up, and cultural diagnosis.Welcome to the Collapse.

June 4, 2019. Fairview Park, Ohio. 40-year old Carnell Sledge and his 33-year old friend, Kate Brown, agree to meet up at the Rocky River Reservation in the Cleveland Metroparks and they each drive there in their respective vehicles. Within 15 minutes of their arrival, Carnell and Kate are both fatally shot in the head near a park bench and the perpetrator manages to flee the scene without anyone seeing or hearing anything. Investigators look into the backgrounds of both victims to see if anyone had a motive to harm them, but are unable to turn up any evidence to implicate anyone and the crime remains unsolved. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a baffling double homicide known as the “Park Bench Murders”. One man's completely ordinary sick day on this date would go on to cost tens of millions of people their lives. A school full of children goes up in flames. Two people were found poisoned on a park bench. Something was launched into orbit from a US military space shuttle and we still don't know what it was. A film was screened for the first time on this date that gave the world its first vampire. In this episode, I delve into the tragic case of Natalie Shotter, a 37-year-old NHS worker and mother of three from west London. On 17 July 2021, after an evening out, Natalie was found deceased on a park bench in Southall Park. The investigation revealed that she had been repeatedly assaulted by Mohamed Iidow, a 35-year-old man who targeted her while she was unconscious. The brutal attack led to Natalie suffering a fatal heart attack. Iidow was subsequently arrested, found guilty of rape and manslaughter, and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 10 years and 8 months. Join me as I explore the events leading up to this horrific crime, the investigation that brought Iidow to justice, and the profound impact on Natalie's family and community.

If you ask an outsider what they think of Christians, they're likely to say, “They're judgmental and think they're better than everyone else.” And there's a good chance their answer is based on personal experience. Some won't set foot inside a church because they're convinced all eyes will be on them, staring them down as if they don't belong. They're convinced the only way to fit in is to fix everything about themselves first. Interestingly, this isn't the experience people had with Jesus at all. The most notorious sinners felt comfortable sitting, eating, talking, and laughing with Jesus. And many of these people made radical changes to their lives without being called out, condemned, or shamed for their sin.
