Our National Parks are important places, not just for their preservation of natural beauty and resources, but also for the economic impact they bring to gateway communities. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan's Upper Peninsula sees nearly a million visitors, year round. For the anchor cities of Munising and Grand Marais, hosting those folks has become their chief industry. With a population of less than 2,000, how do they do it? In this episode of the Lake Superior Podcast, Walt Lindala and Frida Waara talk with Kathy Reynolds, the CEO of the Greater Munising Bay Partnership as well as Director of the Alger County Chamber of Commerce to learn more.Key Takeaways:Munising, Michigan, has transformed into a premier tourism destination, with Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore playing a central role in attracting visitors.Tourism is now the leading industry in Alger County, supporting local businesses, entrepreneurs, and the community year-round.Despite Munising's small population of under 2,000 residents, the area welcomes nearly one million visitors annually, requiring careful planning and infrastructure management. The Michigan Ice Fest, the oldest ice climbing festival in North America, draws climbers from around the world and highlights Munising's appeal as a winter recreation destination.Even though Munising has a strong tourism sector, it also has a diverse economy that includes manufacturing and public services, making it more resilient to seasonal fluctuations.Notable Quotes:"I also tell people you should live where you want to vacation. Why just say, ‘Oh, I get to spend a week. Every once in a while I go someplace'? I wanted to live in a place that I wanted to vacation.""I would say, and maybe I'm a little biased, that it is probably one of, if the most beautiful places in the whole Midwest. It's easy to market the area and get people to come."“Winter season can be extremely beautiful, and this year we are living in a snow globe all over the area of Munising.”“Preservation of the park and our natural resources - that's why people come up to the Upper Peninsula. Protecting those and making sure they stay nice is critical to our economy.”"The people that come to Munising and visit our national park, they not only help us in our community, but they help all the communities outside of us in the U.P."Resources:Greater Munising Bay Partnership: munising.org – Learn more about Munising and its economic development initiatives.Alger County Chamber of Commerce: algercountychamber.com – Discover local businesses and visitor information.Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore: www.nps.gov/piro/index.htm – Explore the stunning landscapes and recreational opportunities in the park.Michigan Ice Fest: michiganicefest.com – Learn about the premier ice climbing event in Munising.Connect With Us:Website: nplsf.org/podcastFacebook: www.facebook.com/NationalParksOfLakeSuperiorFoundationLinkedIn: linkedin.com/company/national-parks-of-lake-superior-foundationSponsors:Cafe Imports: Supporting environmental sustainability in coffee-growing regions since 1993. Winter can be a sleepy time at the National Parks on Lake Superior, but at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore near Munising, Michigan, visitors come to snowmobile, mush dogs, snowshoe, fish and cross-country ski. But the biggest event to bring folks into the park is the Michigan Ice Fest. In this episode of the Lake Superior Podcast, Walt Lindala and Frida Waara talk with Ice Fest organizer Bill Thompson about the event and what makes Pictured Rocks such a Mecca for the sport. Key Takeaways:The Michigan Ice Fest has grown from a small gathering in 1991 to an internationally recognized event, drawing over 1,100 participants from 38 states and seven countries.Ice climbing at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore offers a one-of-a-kind experience, with ice formations over open water that can't be found anywhere else in the world.Ice Fest caters to all skill levels, from beginners as young as eight to seasoned climbers, with professional athletes providing instruction and inspiration at the event.Even in warmer winters with limited ice, the festival continues as an educational and community event, showcasing presentations and fostering camaraderie. The event's unique location, accessibility, and passionate community make it a cornerstone of adventure tourism in Munising, Michigan.Notable Quotes:“With the advent of social media and a few professional athletes spreading the word, there's nowhere in the world that you can go ice climbing over open water, with crashing waves and the beauty of Lake Superior.”“Ice climbing is a sport for anyone looking to go out, have an adventure, and try something new.”“Ice climbing takes you places that not a lot of people in this world can get to.”“Our safety system is really thought out. Instead of focusing on, ‘Oh man, I'm high,' I'm focusing on the ice in front of me. You have all of these interesting patterns of ice, you can hear the water trickling behind it, so the sounds are very unique. It's just really, really special."Resources:Michigan Ice Fest Website (michiganicefest.com) – Learn more about the event, clinics, and presentations.Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (www.nps.gov/piro/index.htm) – Explore the beauty of this unique park.Ice Climbing Safety and Equipment (michiganicefest.com/information/festival-planning/safety/) – Better nderstand the gear and precautions used at the festival.Connect With Us:Website: (nplsf.org/podcast)Facebook: (facebook.com/NPLSF)LinkedIn: (linkedin.com/company/national-parks-of-lake-superior-foundation)Sponsors:Cafe Imports: Supporting environmental sustainability in coffee-growing regions since 1993. Do you have a victim mentality or survivor mentality? The main difference between a victim mentality and a survivor mentality is that a victim mentality focuses on the past and a sense of powerlessness, while a survivor mentality focuses on the future and a sense of personal responsibility. It's been said that telling stories where you are the perpetual victim keeps you from healing and moving forward. The answer, then, is being radically honest with yourself and accepting responsibility for your healing. This past weekend we hosted our meet n greet in Shingleton, MI! Nearly a million visitors came to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan's Upper Peninsula in 2023, contributing over $45 million dollars to the nearby economies. For Alger County--with a population of less than nine thousand people—the park also supports 544 jobs. But hosting that many visitors and generating that much revenue does present unique challenges.  In this episode of the Lake Superior Podcast, Walt Lindala and Frida Waara talk with Hannah Bradburn, Visual Information Specialist at Pictured Rocks, to explore the park's delicate balance between conservation and recreation.Key Takeaways: Visitor Growth: Pictured Rocks sees nearly a million visitors annually, nearly double from a decade ago, showcasing its growing popularity as a travel destination. Invasive Species Management: Efforts to keep zebra mussels and other invasive species out of the park's waterways are ongoing, with education and prevention playing key roles. Seasonal Operations: The park operates year-round, with winter activities like skiing and ice climbing providing a draw for visitors, while summer months focus on hikes, kayaking, and camping. Local Economic Impact: Visitor spending contributes millions of dollars to nearby communities like Munising and Grand Marais, supporting local businesses and fostering economic growth. Historical and Cultural Preservation: Pictured Rocks plays a significant role in preserving both natural and historical landmarks, such as the Au Sable Light Station, offering visitors a chance to connect with the region's past.Quotes: "Pictured Rocks is one of those parks that is best experienced from the water if you're trying to see the cliff - either taking a Pictured Rocks cruise or getting on a kayak tour." “It's super important for folks who are transferring their boats or their gear from different bodies of water that they clean, drain, and dry their equipment to make sure that Pictured Rocks waterways stay pristine.” "If you're interested in working with the park service, reach out to a park, and there's probably room for your skill at a park, and many of us are more than happy to share our experiences."Resources: For more information on visiting or working at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, visit Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (NPS.gov/PIRO).  For more information about NPLSF, visit the National Parks of Lake Superior Foundation website (nplsf.org).Don't miss this insightful episode as Hannah Bradburn takes us behind the scenes of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, revealing how this beloved park balances growing visitation with vital conservation efforts. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is one of the nation's best “hidden” jewels. People venture here to paddle, hike and camp along its rugged, colorful coastline. It's the perfect destination, until it isn't. The lakeshore has seen its fair share of recorded deaths since its NPS designation in 1966. The park can be a risky place to be with notoriously rough coastal waters when weather turns, but it wasn't until 2006 when it saw its first fatal fall. Since then, what truly happened surrounding Juanita Richardson's death among the cliffs of Pictured rocks has been of fierce speculation. The event tore a family apart, and this story proves the most dangerous risk of all could be sitting right next to you all along. This summer marks a significant milestone for both Chris and I. 10 years ago we went on a camping trip to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. It's a beautiful spot on the Lake Superior shoreline . . . and a spot that activated a new pathway in our lives. At the time it was an amazing trip, it felt like something magical happened, but I'm pretty sure neither of us would have anticipated the ways that trip would shift the direction of our lives. I think each of us have such moments and experiences where suddenly we know ourselves differently or perhaps we see life differently. Sometimes we immediately recognize the shifts or changes they make in our lives. Other times it may take a decade to recognize the full ripple ;-) The ripple from that trip has been profound. This summer I have found myself being called to reflect upon many experiences from that summer. A lot happened. Life changed direction. Small steps = Big leaps. I made small changes that year. I see now how those small changes created space for some pretty cool things. Milestones and Soul Anniversaries are important to honor and celebrate. Chris and I have been doing this a lot this summer. It's been fun, magical, and soul nourishing. In today's episode of the Meet Me in Sacred Space Podcast I dive deeper into this conversation sharing more about milestones, how to recognize and track them, as well as how to celebrate and honor them. But they're especially pictured in more ways than one. First, they have mineral stains covering their face, due to the huge amount of metal in the ground up here. Camping Newbies cause massive damage to National Parks [2021 Update]

Hundreds of thousands of camping newbies are flocking to our federal lands, with many of them ignorantly - but sometimes intentionally - causing damage to National Parks. It is a nationwide problem, unprecedented in scope, brought about by COVID travel restrictions and the need for people to get away. And the flood of new campers and RVers shows no signs of abating. posing great threats to the sustainability of our national parks, already hamstrung by bare-bones budgets and hiring freezes. That's the topic of our interview of the week on the RV Podcast as we talk to the superintendent of one of our most pristine hunks of federal wilderness, the beautiful Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore along Lake Superior in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. You can listen to the podcast in the player below or scroll down this page for shownotes and a transcript of the interview, plus links and resources about all the things we talk about. The interview can be heard about 26:20 in. About the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and the stress caused by Camping Newbies  Some of the Lake Superior Cliffs of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore... photo from  National Parks Service Our guest is David Horne, the Superintendent of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, which hugs the south shore of Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. It's known for the dramatic multicolored Pictured Rocks cliffs and its unusual sandstone formations like Miners Castle and Chapel Rock. It covers the south shore of Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and has pristine beaches, rugged hardwood forests, abundant wildlife, and little development. BONUS: Click Here for our blog post on seven special attractions in Michigan's Upper Peninsula Size of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore It covers 73,236 acres (114 square miles), roughly between the towns of Munising on the West and Grand Marais on the east. Hiking trails crisscross the lakeshore, with the most popular being a 42-mile section of the North Country Trail that traverses the hilly lakeshore.  There are three rustic, but small, campgrounds. Backcountry camping is available by permit through the lakeshore. Normally, the park gets around half a million visitors every year. But this past year was anything but normal. The number of Camping Newbies exploded last year Here is a video we shot last fall that shows parts of the Lakeshore which even in the fall, saw every campground filled: Over a  million people flocked to the lakeshore in 2020, shattering the 2019 record of 859,000, which itself broke the previous year’s record of 815,000. The growth started about 2015 when the park averaged around a half million visitors a year. The result has been more than troublesome. The visitors and camping newbies have damaged trails. Made their own trails where they shouldn't. They have so congested some of the two-lane roads in and around the park that many places had traffic jams, with hundreds of cars competing for a few dozen parking spots. Trash, human waste, littering, illegal camping, and a massive strain on the park's infrastructure and staff have reached a point of crisis. Again, this is not happening just at the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. It is all across the country. But in looking at the problem through the lens of what the invasion of the camping newbies and other new visitors have brought to just one park, perhaps we can better understand what is happening everywhere.  So we can figure out what to do about it. Yes, I said "we." For those parks are our parks. And they, and the dedicated staff that works so hard to protect them for us, need all our help. 12 Mile Beach on the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore - photo from National Parks Service Interview with David Horne, Superintendent of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore David is a 26 year veteran of the National Parks Service and took over running the lakeshore in 2018.

Our top story is: Kayakers on a tour of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in northern Michigan narrowly escaped injury when a large section of cliff collapsed near them into Lake Superior.

I hope you enjoy this audio journal. You can find a video that provides a slightly different glimpse of the trip here. Lower Tahquamenon Falls. Even though it is cloudy you will always be impressed when you come here. --May 23 2019 at 15:25. Paradise, MI, United States     Tahquamenon Falls. The Upper Falls are shown pouring themselves over the drop. While bugs can sometimes drive you nuts at this state park (not today) it is definitely a place worth visiting. --May 23 2019 at 17:11. Newberry, MI, United States     This is Clark’s first backpacking trip. We are a couple hours in to our first day having our first lunch on the trail at a spot we like. --May 24 2019 at 14:09. Munising, MI, United States       Our first day on the Lakeshore Trail. Joni looks happy and ready to tackle the world. --May 24 2019 at 15:27. Munising, MI, United States I wish I could recall what this car looked like when I first saw it some 20 years ago. It’s been sitting here far longer than that. The place is an odd spot for an abandoned car as it isn’t really by any roads but maybe that is why it’s here. Photo by Andy --May 25 2019 at 18:00. Munising, MI, United States       Pine Bluffs is about a half mile from Trappers Lake. We had to hustle to get here for the sunset but it was worth it. The photo doesn’t really capture the quality of the sunset colors though it does a better job with Lake Suerior which has grown rougher since the afternoon. --May 25 2019 at 21:37. Munising, MI, United States       Lake Superior waves lap at the shore of this cove which is one of several. Andy is shown here and you can tell it must be a lovely day - he is down to his base layer. --May 26 2019 at 11:50. Munising, MI, United States       It takes a bit of work to gett down (more to climb back up) to this cove but it sure is a pretty spot I am standing in. Phto by Clark --May 26 2019 at 11:56. Munising, MI, United States       Grand Portal Arch. This year we walked through frequent mud spots that threatened to soak your feet. A prelude to what we would find the next day. --May 26 2019 at 17:07. Munising, MI, United States       Not much of a castle anymore but still worth looking at even, or perhaps especially, on an overcast day such as this day. --May 27 2019 at 13:07. This episode comes to you from Elkhart, Indiana, the RV Capital of the world. We talk about what we’re seeing here this week at RV Open House, recorded on location at the RV Hall of Fame in Elkhart and featuring a comnveration with Darryl Searer, the president of this awesome museum and exhibit center. Also, in our interview of the week, we talk about some innovative new technology being shown by Roadtrek and the Erwin Hymer Group of North America. Jim Hammill comes by to tell us what the new WATT Fuel Cell technology will mean to RVers. Plus your questions, comments and much more. RV NEWS OF THE WEEK JENNIFER California woman falls to death taking selfie at Michigan's Pictured Rocks Another sad story of someone dying at a national landmark while taking a selfie made the news last week. This time the location was Michigan's Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The victim? A California woman who paused to take a selfie on a 200 foot cliff overlooking Lake Superior. The woman apparently slipped, fell into the lake, and died. So sad.    MIKE Vail, Colorado, setting aside local tax dollars to pay for federal workers to monitor U.S. campgrounds, trails We have been writing for some time about the maintenance backlog in our national parks because of shortages in the federal budget. But a story I saw last week was the first I've read of towns near popular tourist destinations taking local tax dollars that would normally fund roads, police or fire, and instead giving it to the federal government to pay for federal land expenses. The story focused on Vail, Colorado, setting aside $120,000 to pay U.S. Forest Service employees to monitor federal trails and campgrounds, and discussed several other cities throughout the country also taking their local taxpayer money to pay for federal land care. JENNIFER Airstream Hotel is coming to Yosemite A California start-up called AutoCamp has teamed up with Airstream to create a “glamping” experience for visitors to   Yosemite National Park who can book accommodations in 80 Airstream trailers. The company promises luxury camping with the same amenities found in many boutique hotels. Besides all those Airstream trailers, the development features a 4,000-square-foot clubhouse with meeting space, fire pits, and a marketplace for food options. Other amenities will include a rooftop deck and an outdoor swimming pool. The Airstream hotel is just outside of the park and will have shuttles running back and forth all day. I warn you, when it opens next ear it won’t be cheap: Nightly rates start at $225 MIKE This camper trailer folds into a box that fits inside a sprinter van - and comes out when it is time to camp A story about a new kind of camper that fits into the back of a van caught our eye last week. The camper is a modular box, with extensions, that fits in the back of a sprinter van. Only unlike a Class B, the van is still a van - the camper fits inside of it, and comes out at a campground, with several slides until it has the shape of the letter "L". It is then a normal camper trailer, complete with beds, a kitchen, TV, storage and more. To read more about the unusual European made ioCamper, click here. JENNIFER Man walks up to Old Faithful, looks inside and urinates into it Yellowstone National Park sure has had its share of stories recently of people doing foolish things. This week the park was in the news when a man went off trail and walked up to Old Faithful, appeared to urinate into the geyser, and then appeared to lay down and looked into a cone. The whole thing was captured on video. Later he apparently led police on a chase in town for driving recklessly. The man is now facing many charges. This part of the program is brought to you by AllStays Pro, the best tool for RVers looking for places to camp; Harvest Hosts, a unique membership service that allows members to stay free overnight in wineries, farms and attractions across North America; and Ov...

If you’re anything like me you probably started your business because you love making videos. Being creative might come naturally to you, but authentically selling your value to clients may not be your biggest strength. Sometimes we might put on a persona that isn’t true to ourselves, or we show up unprepared. It’s often a deal breaker, but all too common. My longtime friend, Jason McCullough is an expert communicator. He started +1 because he wants people to find clarity in what they do. Through his articles, courses, and coaching he helps people communicate better so that they can maintain the best client relationships that they can. He joins me in the studio today so we can discuss how creative entrepreneurs can communicate more effectively. We share some stories of when we’ve struggled to communicate well with our customers. If you are a person that needs to be able to sell better and more authentically, if you ever have a problem critiquing something or receiving criticism, or have ever been in an argument, you’re going to love this conversation. Did you do your “homework” and identify the problem that you are trying to solve that is central to your goals? Let me know in the comments on the episode page!   In this episode: How to respond to customers when they are unhappy with your work What can go wrong as a result of miscommunication and the best form of damage control Why being your authentic self is perhaps the most important thing to do in order to communicate effectively Why preparedness is the best way to avoid verbal diarrhea The importance of having a structure to the way you communicate with your clients so that they will buy your product over and over again The benefits of picking only the problems that you want to solve   Quotes: “There’s an art and a skill to communicating. A time and a place; the method by which you communicate to somebody or you respond to somebody. There’s no hard and fast rule. And I think that skill in today’s day and age is lost.”[14:32] “When you’re not yourself, people can sense that. When you’re trying to communicate something that isn’t authentic, it just doesn’t work, I don’t care who you are.” [18:13] “Focus on the things that you really really care about, and figure out all the rest of the stuff some other way. Somebody else can do it, or don’t do it at all.”  [34:17]   Links: Build A Better Video Business With Our Exclusive Studio Sherpa Community Become +1 Follow Jason on Twitter Ascend Method The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore   Check out the full show notes page Stay up to date with everything we're doing at Studio Sherpas Tune into our weekly Facebook Lives Follow Studio Sherpas on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram   If you haven't already, we'd love it if you would take 1 minute to leave us a review on iTunes!

I do not know how many times I have backpacked the Lakeshore Trail in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore over the past couple of decades. I have gone in both directions many times. This year, with 13 other people many with little to no backpacking experience, I would travel the trail once again from Sand Point to Sable Falls. This is something of an annual trip over Memorial Day Weekend though I do not always get to attend.  The trip would turn out to be a very fine one even with some trials and tribulations thrown in. We lucked out with the weather and everyone had a good time. The audio you are listening too will give you a sense of what we experienced.  You can find more photos in these photo albums which have the same photos but display differently (Google, Apple). There is also a video you can enjoy here on YouTube.

Over Memorial Day Weekend (May 24-27, 2013) the Western Michigan Chapter of the North Country Trail Association runs a trip to backpack the Lakeshore Trail in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. this year 5 of us did the trip. This year we hiked the trail from west to east, Munising to Grand Marais, the opposite of what we normally do. The trip would treat us to exceptional weather never getting overly warm and though nighttime low temperatures dipped to around freezing we were all prepared for that degree of chill. Of even greater importance to us was the near utter lack of bugs to pester us. That was a real special treat since sometimes when we have done this trip the bugs have been exceptionally voracious. We also got a couple surprises along the way not the least of which would be our chance, after years of merely seeing the light station from the ground, to tour Au Sable Lighthouse on our third day. Trip photos can be found here. A quick video glimpse of our hike can be watched here on Vimeo.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore sits on the southern shore of Lake Superior in Alger County, Michigan. For the last several years a trip loosely organized by the Western Michigan chapter of the North Country Trail Association has gone to hike the full length of the Lakeshore Trail over the Memorial Day Weekend. The Lakeshore Trail runs for 42 miles. It is an easy hiking trail as these things go with just a smattering of small ups and downs sprinkled about. The trail spends a great deal of time within easy sight of Lake Superior. This means walkers often have wonderful views of the lake in all its moods. When you don't have fine views of the lake you may have the pleasure of looking at huge stretches of wildflowers and richly endowed forests.
