I don't do that many interviews, but when Josh Fisher emailed me after the first VLIW video came out, I figured I had to take a shot and ask. And to my great pleasure, he agreed. Fisher is winner of the Eckert–Mauchly Award and a pioneer of VLIW architecture. I consider him a legend.

During World War II, football itself was at risk. The Steagles—a hybrid of the Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers—were a desperate wartime experiment. With rosters drained by the draft, the NFL turned to mostly players deemed unfit for military service. And it might be the only way the NFL can survive the war. Special thanks to Matthew Algeo! Phil and Josh Fisher discuss attribution theory, a concept in social psychology that explains how individuals interpret the causes of events and behaviors. They explore its relevance in adventure education, emphasizing the importance of understanding internal and external attributions, common missteps participants make, and strategies for educators to engage learners effectively. The conversation highlights the role of language in framing success and failure, the need for appropriate challenges for different skill levels, and the impact of past experiences on current perceptions. Ultimately, they stress the importance of fostering a culture where failure is seen as a learning opportunity. Attribution theory helps explain how we interpret success and failure. Common missteps include attributing success to luck and failure to external factors. Reframing language can enhance participant engagement and learning. Creating appropriate challenges is essential for skill development. Pre-attribution can influence how individuals approach new experiences. Educators play a crucial role in shaping attributions in their students. Failure is a necessary part of the learning process. Encouraging reflection can help participants understand their experiences better. It's important to focus on controllable factors in success and failure. Building a positive learning environment can mitigate learned helplessness. Contact Josh - jfisher@high5adventure.org Music and sound effects - epidemicsound.com
Janna discovered Jaime and Josh through their shared Instagram profile, @marriageishappening, and was so moved by their marriage story that she invited them to join her on the podcast.Married at 21 with four kids soon after, they initially adhered to traditional gender roles—Jaime stayed at home while Josh worked outside the house. Jaime, an extrovert, describes early parenthood as a time filled with "shock and horror." She found herself isolated in a basement suite with no help, limited adult interaction, and minimal support from her husband. She felt sad, lonely, and disconnected from both her mind and body. Meanwhile, Josh, an introvert, struggled in his demanding social work position and came home feeling drained, unsure how to support his wife and children in a meaningful way. After years of unfulfillment, Jaime reached a breaking point, contemplating self-harm, death, and even leaving her marriage. It wasn't until she realized she needed to focus on her own well-being and make changes that things began to shift. But when she embraced newfound joy and freedom, Josh struggled to adjust. His defensiveness and emotional immaturity made it hard for him to process the changes she was going through.Together, Jaime and Josh share how they've made progress in their marriage by redefining their roles and discovering a new way to be together.Janna's new Wanting It More Foundations self-paced course for women is open for registration. The next round of Doing It Together runs June/July 2025.
